The Grinch for Advent?

That’s right, our Advent Study time will begin on

Wednesday, November 17 at 5:30pm. We’ll be talking

about the Grinch and his famous small heart.

We’ll be using the series from Matt Rawle; “The Heart That Grew Three Sizes” Matt writes: “We don’t know

why the Grinch hated Christmas. We just know he did. This series explores the faith themes in the Christmas

classic story How the Grinch Stole Christmas. How did Christmas save the Grinch? Could it be that the very

thing we think we hate is the one thing that changes our lives?”

Join us as we look at this story through the lens of faith and see how Christ speaks to us through our culture.

Please speak with Pastor Diane if you have any questions.

Glorious God, how curious and what a confession that we set aside one day a year

and call it Thanksgiving. I smile at the presumption and hope you smile too. But

the truth is, Holy Friend, that my words can’t carry all the praise I want them to, or

that they should, no matter how may trips they make.

Ted Loder, Guerrillas Of Grace

Well, here we are again. It doesn’t seem possible, does it? We’re right in the mid-

dle of autumn and the Thanksgiving holiday is just around the corner. Never mind

that Christmas is quickly approaching one more time.

Anyway, I came across this prayer from Ted Loder about Thanksgiving and I think

he’s on to something. Why is it we take one day a year and call it Thanksgiving.

Yes, I know it’s about remembering our Pilgrim ancestors and the story about the

first Thanksgiving a few hundred years ago. But Ted is right. Why are we so caught

up in calling one day a year Thanksgiving? Shouldn’t all our days be celebrations of

all sorts of “Thanksgivings?”

After all we certainly should be thanking our creator God every day and every mo-

ment of our lives. We have been given all sorts of gifts, too many to count. Yet, all

too often we find ourselves complaining about what we think we are missing, or

what we think we need and don’t have.

The other day I heard someone remarking and complaining that there may be a

shortage of turkey this year for our Thanksgiving celebrations, and that we should

be ordering our turkeys from the grocer now, so we won’t miss out. It’s as if we

can’t have Thanksgiving without our traditional meal. Really?

Anyway, this is just a reminder to take a few minutes every day and give

thanks to God.

Ted goes on to write: “O Glorious One, for this curious day for the impulses

that have designated it, for the gifts that grace it, for the gladness that accom-

panies it, for my life, for those whom I came to be, for friends through whom I

hear and see greater worlds than otherwise I would, for all the doors of words

and music and worship through which I pass to larger worlds and for the One

who brought a kingdom to me, I pause to praise and thank you with this one

more trip of word which leaves too much uncarried, but not unfelt. Thank

you!”

Blessings and Peace, Happy Thanksgiving! Pastor Diane

Thanksgiving Thoughts

Have you thought about Thanksgiving

And all that it means?

For once it’s a holiday without the

whole shopping scene

It’s about family and friends and our

faith that we share

At Calvary it’s all about people who

care.

It’s a time to reflect on our blessings

and more

To think about things that don’t come

from a store.

At Calvary we’re thankful for many

things:

Pastor Diane and the message she

brings

By Faye Toy

For Karen and Delores who lead us in

song

With these two in charge it’s hard to go

wrong.

The building and grounds are surpassed

by no one

Without any praise, it’s quietly done.

Deb in the office works late in the day

As so many help in various ways

Our church is like a small family for sure

There for each other to help and endure

We’re thankful to God for all of these

things

His love and grace and all that He brings.

COUNT YOUR BLESSINGS THIS

THANKSGIVING!!

Advent Season

Advent is a very special time of year that sometimes get lost

in the bright light of the Christmas season it precedes. The first day

of a new Liturgical (or church) calendar and begins a four week peri-

od of preparation in anticipation of the nativity of Jesus at Christmas.

The Advent Season is all about reflecting on how we can pre-

pare our hearts and homes for Christ’s birth in the world as it is to-

day. It is a time for faith communities and families to remember,

through prayer, reflections, special music, and good deeds what the

true meaning of Jesus’ birth is. There are many different traditions

associated with the four weeks of Advent.

The Advent season invites us to step away from what can be

a frenzied time of parties and shopping to consider how we com-

memorate the birth of Jesus, one of the holiest times in Christian

faith. It is also a time to reflect on the triumphant return of Jesus at

the second coming.

This year, Advent Season will start on Sunday, November

28th and run all the way to Friday, Dec. 24th.
