The Art of Leadership On April 5th, 16 lucky Cambie students traveled to the Vancouver Convention Center to be part of "The Art of Leadership for Women" Conference. Richmond School District was the only district invited to attend and the district team of 180 students were respectful and engaged. Our library now has a copy of each book that is penned by each of the five speakers: Emily Chang, Tiffani Bova, Laura Gassner Otting, Dr. Tasha Eurich, and Malala Yousafzai! Our student group is now preparing to complete the 2nd and 3rd parts of the 3-part series, which involves working together to create a small-scale social action project. What a great day of inspiration. Richmond School District is truly the best place to learn and lead.

For the second straight year, girl’s soccer at Cambie is back! With a short turnaround and mad rush, a wonderful group of enthusiastic young ladies (& Mr. Nashlund & Ms. Fensom) are competing in the RSSAA soccer league again. Despite only having a small number of girls who have prior experience playing soccer, the team is showing great attitude and improvement so far in its season. Games are Tuesdays and Thursdays at 3:30, and they also practice on Wednesdays. The team is composed of: Sonika Barha, Mya Deol, Sukvir Dosnajh, Aaliyah Egharevba, Rut Pasquier, Kendralyn Kwan, Diya Mann, Amany Azzam, Aima Saqib, Kylie Langelaan, Ynna Lopez, Saniya Mann, Jaza Khan, Roop Sohal, Ashley Escobar, and Brianna Langelaan. The team is also helped by manager Hannah Raymond. Good luck, girls!

On March 11th, Cambie Secondary welcomed over 20 guests to the school to participate in our very own Human Library Event. The premise of the event was to allow mainly grade 9 students (and some grade 11s!) to engage with a number of adults who have a range of jobs and life experience. Some of our “books on loan” included a professional swim coach, a motion graphics designer, a fire fighter, an engineer, an event planner and a contemporary dancer. This event was also documented in the Richmond News as Alan Campbell, a reporter from the Richmond News was also “on loan” for the day. Take a look at Alan’s take on the day, as shared in the Richmond News. https://www.richmond-news.com/community/hoping-i-wasn-t-a-boring-human-book-to-richmond-students-1.23667165 Ms. Paukov, Ms. Sanders and the rest of the team responsible for the Human Library look forward to next year’s event!

Cambie’s Reading Riot continues to be strong, and it is great to see so many first-time students participating this year. The contest runs until the end of the month, with prize draws held every Friday. We now have several Reading Riot titles available on the shelf and ready to be taken out.

This is a reminder to all students that most materials are loaned out for two weeks. If a student needs a book for a longer period of time, he/she can renew it. We also carry many popular magazine titles as well as newspapers, and are constantly updating our fiction and non-fiction books. There is definitely something for everyone in the Cambie library.

We look forward to seeing and working with you in the library. Happy Spring!

Home-Ec News What happens when the students are given the challenge of reworking and revamping any recipe they have previously made in class? Well, with a lot of creative thinking, (and a very busy Food classroom with 12 different things being made at the same time!), and some tough decisions having to be made on the new direction that students wanted to take the recipes (do you simplify? make more complex? create a fusion? add a new twist?). Foods 9/10 students present to you the following…

Short-Term Homestays Needed!

Richmond International Education is looking for local families to host international students for 3-week programs in July and August. If you’d like to learn more, please go to the homestay information session on Tuesday, May 14th at the School Board Office, 7811 Granville Ave, from 6:00 to 7:00pm or contact Richmond International Education at: [email protected]

Did you see the Richmond Library Booktalks? If you missed them, come into the Cambie Branch and we can tell you all about the great books and comics that we presented for you at the school. IF they aren’t available, it’s because your classmates beat you to them! But don’t worry, we can still place requests on them. Here are a couple of highlights (with help from my colleagues at the Brighouse Branch) That’s Not What Happened – Kody Keplinger Three years ago, someone walked into Virgil County High School and pulled out a gun and killed 9 people. The main character is named Lee and when the shooting started 3 years ago, she hid in a stall in the girls’ washroom with her best friend Sarah. The shooter walked into the washroom and Sarah was killed. Everyone thinks that Sarah stood up to the shooter and died proclaiming her faith. But Lee knows that that isn’t what happened. Lee decides to come forward with the truth three years later, because people have turned Sarah into a martyr and now a book is about to be released all about Sarah and her faith, and Lee believes it her last chance to set the record straight. Freaking Out!: Real Life Stories about Anxiety We can all experience anxiety from time to time, but what do you do when anxiety becomes so bad that it takes over your life? Freaking out, is a compilation of 13 stories from teens who have experienced anxiety from situations ranging from getting into college, the loss of a parent or day to day social interactions. It also provides strategies for how these teens dealt with anxiety, what worked and what didn’t. -- Remember to check the teen section on our website for upcoming volunteer opportunities. There are events at all of our locations and we can always use a hand. Remember, there is an interview process and Criminal Record Check. It’s good practice for when you need to go out and interview for jobs. Look here: http://rpl.yourlibrary.ca/volunteering Sign up now to get ready for any volunteer opportunities that will be coming up for the summer.
