MOVERS 'N SHAKERS - James Davies Executive Director at Bublr Bikes

What attracts you to your work with BublrBikes?Initially, it was the bikes. I started at Bublr as aBike Technician five years ago; I love working onbikes. As I learned more about bikeshare, moreand more things attracted me to Bublr. From atheoretical perspective, I'm attracted to the wayBublr can connect the Milwaukee area. Youexperience a city differently depending on howyou move through it, and I think a bicycle is justabout the best way. I'm also attracted to Bublr asa means of reducing the greenhouse gasemissions of the transportation sector. On themore day-to-day side of things, I love the peopleI work with. Bublr's staff and board are allphenomenal, dedicated people who want to seeBublr be a sustainable, excellent bikesharesystem for all.

In your new role as Executive Director, arethere any particular initiatives you lookforward to implementing?I'm excited to work more with the other bikeorganizations in Milwaukee. The Wisconsin BikeFederation does phenomenal advocacy work thatbenefits all bicyclists. Additionally, through theirSafe and Healthy Streets program they workedwith other organizations, like Path to Platinum,to get Milwaukee's Complete Streets ordinancepassed, which requires that bicycles and

EVENT SPOTLIGHT -Join us for BID-NID Week!Milwaukee Downtown, BID #21 to host events

during city-wide BID-NID Week, Sept. 9 - 14

The City of Milwaukee is hosting its first BID-NIDWeek to celebrate the exceptional work thatBusiness and Neighborhood Improvement Districtsdo to promote the commercial corridors in the City.BID-NID Week will also provide an opportunity torecognize the commitment these organizationsmake to the City of Milwaukee and ourneighborhoods.

The week will celebrate BIDs-NIDs with variousactivities that highlight the work of theorganizations, encourage people to explore andexperience these Milwaukee neighborhoodsfirsthand, and bring awareness to the added valuethey bring to the City.

Milwaukee Downtown, BID #21 is sponsoring severalevents, including a pop-up concert at Postman'sPorch, a curated Sculpture Milwaukee walking tourhighlighting this year's installation, and a ribbon-cutting celebration for Canary Coffee Bar--downtown's newest locally-owned coffee shop.

This event is being organized by the Department ofCity Development Commercial Corridor Team,Business Improvement Districts (BIDs) andNeighborhood Improvement Districts (NIDs). Visitmilwaukee.gov/BIDNIDWeek for more informationand a list of events open to the public.

pedestrians be considered in city planning andprojects. Bike Benefits and Bike 100 Days aretwo other fantastic groups focused on gettingmore people on bikes. Bublr isn't an advocacynonprofit, but I'd like to work more closely withthese types of organizations. I think we share alot of the same vision and have our own littlepieces to work on.

How does Bublr Bikes play into Milwaukee'sdevelopment landscape and largertransportation system? Bublr is an important part of solving thefirst/last mile problem in Milwaukee's publictransit network. Over 80% of our stations are co-located with a Milwaukee County Transit Stop;60% of the Hop streetcar stops are collocatedwith Bublr stations; and Bublr has a station atthe Intermodal Station, connecting folks withregional bus and rail.

How do you see Bublr Bikes and the newaddition of electric scooters working together?I think that depends on a lot of external factors. If we look at cities across the country, we'veseen this story play out several times with theintroduction of dockless e-assist equipment intoa city that has a traditional docked bikesharesystem. In some cities, the introduction resultedin an "all boats rise" situation where thetraditional bikeshare system saw their usageincrease. In other cities, that was not the case.Every city is different, but I think it sayssomething really good about the cities thatcreated space for multiple non-car options toflourish. I hope that Bublr can both--be part ofunderstanding what made micro-mobility reallyflourish in some places; and then also be part ofimplementing those strategies in Milwaukee.

What other project or initiative do you feel ismost important to keeping the positivemomentum throughout the City?I think the Milwaukee City-County JointTaskforce on Climate and Economic Equity, andtheir eventual recommendations, will be veryimportant in continuing the positive momentumcurrently flowing through the city.

When you are not working, what are some ofyour favorite things to do? Well, since I'm not working on bikes at Bublr toomuch these days, when I'm not working, I like toeither work on, or ride my own bicycles. Justrecently, I did a fantastic 85-mile loop aroundthe Oak Leaf Trail.
