CAMBRIAN HALL
Lives of great men all remind usWe can make our lives sublime,And, departing, leave behind usFootprints on the sands of time. H.W. Longfellow
The OriginsThe history of Cambrian Hall began with the late Maharaja Judha Shumshere
J.B. Rana ex-Prime Minister of Nepal. After giving up his Prime Ministership
(1948) to his first nephew he moved to India upon the invitation of the Indian
Prime Minister Pt. Jawahar Lal Nehru and Home Minister, Sardar Vallabh Bhai
Patel. He settled down in Dehradun at 13, Young Road Dehradun Cantt.
Following the demise of the Maharaja Juddha Shumshere in 1952 and
Maharani Gambhir Kumari in 1955, their youngest son Col. Shashi Shumsher
JB Rana in consultations with his two older brothers, Santa and Rabi
Shumshere JB Rana, converted the Maharajas home into a residential school
for the children of the South Asia region. The elaborate infrastructure and
the historic buildings spread over 35 bigas of land at 13 Young Road now
serve as part of the campus of Cambrian Hall.
The late Col. Shashi Shumsher JB Rana, a veteran
politician and an educationist was a firm believer of the
importance of excellence and innovation in education
to promote social change and development. In 1954, he
approached Ms. Maude Mainwaring, regarded as one
of the finest teacher in the town and to assist him in
opening a school and thus began an Odyssey. With only 5 students and Ms. Mainwaring
as the only teacher coupled with the strong vision, firm commitment and the dream and
hard work of Col. Shashi Shumsher JB Rana Cambrian Hall made a modest beginning. Today cambrian hall is a
leading school in the town with over 1400 students from varied backgrounds and outstanding alumni in all
walks of life spread across the world over,
Cambrian Hall, one of the most respected and trusted school in Dehradun, has excelled in academics as well
as co curricular activities over the years. Dr. SC Biala is the current Principal of the school.

Young Shashi Shumshere J.B. Rana
I have been involved with Cambrian Hall since its very inception, following the vision of my late husband
and founding president of the school and taking his mission forward. This has provided me with a life time
opportunity to serve the school and the youth of this country. I often recall the late President's firm belief,
conviction, and hard work in transforming Cambrian Hall into a premier education institution in
Dehradun. I feel proud that we have been able to carry forward that legacy since 1989.
True to the values of the late president and Founder, Cambrian Hall has promoted a secular and
democratic ethos with focus on values of integrity and honesty and care for those less privileged. Today, it
is one of the most affordable private school in the country providing quality education at par with the best
schools. The outstanding academic results, distinguished alumni and numerous medals won by the
children of the school are testimony to this.
For me Cambrian Hall is far more than its infrastructure and buildings. We are community of parents,
teachers and students who are working together to become educated, informed and responsible citizens
this country and world. Under the guidance of a very able board comprising of distinguished members and
the support of the Principal, Cambrian Hall is providing quality education that is not only modern in its
approach but also based on the ideals and rich culture of this country and the
region.
What makes Cambrian Hall truly special is the quality of the staff and students
Message from the President
Rani Chandra Raj Laxmi Rana
Vision Cambrian Hall aims at providing equal, affordable and quality education to youth with
a view to produce caring and responsible citizens and leaders of the future.
CAMBRIAN HALL
Message from the PrincipalCambrian Hall aims not only to produce quality education but also to produce citizens with all-round
personality, fully equipped to march out into the world, ready to scale new heights and explore new
vistas in life. The emphasis is on imparting education aimed at forming a character based on discipline,
self-reliance and moral integrity. We encourage our students to inculcate the qualities of perseverance
and intellectual curiosity and blend them with innovation in the pursuit of knowledge and education
that will help them to be self- dependent.
In today's highly competitive world, I believe that it is not only important to be academically on track
but also the co-curricular activities are needed for children to realize their inner potentials. The school
helps the students identify, develop and perfect their hidden talents in various fields, such as- quizzing,
dramatics, computers, elocution, painting, music, yoga etc. There are various inter house and inter
school competition held at regular intervals and students are encouraged to participate in
competitions held in other schools.
Our committed and professional teachers motivate and guide the children and draw out the best in
them. Classrooms are technology enabled and equipped with computers, as well as laboratories. Due
emphasis is also laid on practical and hands on learning and this provides an ideal atmosphere for the
students to excel at academics. Marks are created in the classroom but memories and personalities are
created on the playing fields. It is here that children experienced a myriad of emotions like euphoria,
humility, defeat, resolute defiance of the scoreboard to rise against all odds to be a winner.
MissionAt Cambrian Hall our mission is to inspire students to learn and become caring and sensitive individuals able to keep pace and lead in a rapidly changing environment. The school adopts a flexible approach to learning incorporating local and global perspectives. Our mission is to promote academic excellence, a balanced life and responsible citizens of the country and the world. The school's motto 'to Greater Heights ' drives every child in the school to pursue the values of excellence and innovation, service to humanity and unity in diversity.
