Gymanfa Ganu Revived in Iowa
OnJuly10,2016,theFirstWelshCongregationalChurchonOldMan’sCreekwillholdagymanfaandWelshtea.Theeventmarks170yearssincethefoundingofthechurchin1846!Althoughthechurchmembershipanditsgymanfahavesurgedandwanedovertheyears,the“LittleWelshChurchontheHill”anditsadjacentWelshPioneerCemeteryhavebeenlovedandcaredforbydescendantsofthefirstmembers.Nowthedescendentshavedecidedtoresurrectitsgymanfaandhopefullycontinueitinthecomingyears.OnJuly10ththerewillbetheusualchurchserviceat10:00a.m.followedbyatraditionalWelshTeawithWelshcakes.Thegymanfawillstartat1:00.AnumberofWelsh-themeditemswillbeforsaleduringtheday,includingreprintsoftheoriginalStanHaringpicturedoneforDorothy(Tudor)Carranmanyyearsago.Formoreinformation,contactConni(Tudor)Lynch(319)631-0171orKelliRozinek(319)321-7924.SharonCenterRd.offHwy.1!

Another Successful
“Welsh Weekend for Everyone”
HowsplendidwasourweekendWelsheventatChristUnitedMethodistChurchinWatertowninMay!JohnGood,musician,story-teller,andcymanfadirector,gaveawonderfulconcertFridaynighttoagoodcrowd,whichincludedmembersofthechurchandpeoplefromWatertown.OnSaturdaythelargefleamarketinthevestibulegreetedus:thebooks,music,andWelshitemsgotpickedoveralldaylong.Theworkshopsandpresentationswereinformativeandentertaining:“DisappearingofOwainGlyndwr,”theWelshflagandkite-making;the1904WelshRevival;Patagonia;andWelshfolktales.Inthelateafternoon,afterTea,weenjoyedtheusualvariedandtalentedNosonLawen,withMr.Goodpresiding.Theawardsforpoetryandproseweremade,withthethemethisyearbeingEnfys/Rainbow.Thewinningessaywas“PenielChapel’sRainbow”byCaroleeSchultz,excerptedbelow.WeretiredtoLyonsIrishPubindowntownWatertown,andenjoyedagoodmealandagoodsingalong,joinedbyafewoftheotherpatrons.SomehowJohnGoodstillhadsomegasinthetank,andledafinegymanfaganuonSundayafternoon.Upwardsof200peoplefilledthesanctuary,andwesurprisedMr.GoodwithourabilitytosingsowellynGymraeg.Llongyfarchiadau,pawb!
PENIELCHAPEL’SRAINBOWby“Hope”God’scovenantwithNoahdidnotstopinthattimeandplaceofhistory.ItwasGod’spromiseforallhumanityforalltime,evenPenielChapelin2013.InGenesis9:11-17;Godsaid, “I establish my covenant with you: Never again will all life be destroyed by the waters of a flood; never again will there be a flood to destroy the earth.” And God said. “This is the sign of the covenant I am making between me and you and every living creature with you, a covenant for all generations to come: I have set my rainbow in the clouds, and it will be the sign of the covenant between me and the earth. Whenever I bring clouds over the earth and the rainbow appears in the clouds, I will remember my covenant between me and you and all living creatures of every kind....
TheWelshimmigrantshadastrongsenseofGod’scovenant,andweremostlikelyremindedofthatwhentheytoosawtherainbows….(they)wereseekingGod’spromiseoffreedomtoworshipHimintheirfaith,aswellasthehopeofworkintheminesandfertilecropland….IntheareaoftheOshkoshWelshSettlement,PenielChapelisatthesouthernedge,builtin1856,nodoubtbyfamiliesrelyingonGod’spromises.Eventhoughthechurchclosedin1977forregularworship,thePenielGymanfaGanuAssociationkeptthetraditionofmusicalivewiththeannualGymanfaGanu.TheyalsoreliedonGod’spromisetocarefortheoldstructureforgenerationstocome.In2011,prayersandsupportledtothedecisiontorenovatethebuilding….Monieswereavailableforpaintingandlightmaintenance,butwherewasittocomefromin2013whenanewsteelshakeroofwasneededtoreplacetheleakingroof?AsinNoah’stime,Penielsupporters’prayerswereheardbyGod,howeverfewpeoplewouldtrulybelieve.Theamountneededin2013foranewroofwasunfathomableforachurchwithoutregularincome.Evenmoreunbelievablewashowlittletimewasavailabletoraisethemoney.Aweddingwaswithin3monthsandtheareaoftheleak,theceilingofthediningroom/kitchen,hadtoberemovedbyvolunteersandanewceilinginstalledbyprofessionals.Also,theconsultantsaidanewroofontheentirestructurehadtobeinstalledbeforewinter.Onefaithfulvolunteerevenasked,“Howisthatgoingtohappen?”GodcanmakeanythinghappenandHedid.Heremindedfourvolunteerswhowereawestruckaftertearingdownthatceiling.Astheywerecleaningup,theywentoutsidetoseeGOD’SRAINBOWintheeast!ThistrulywasassurancethatGodindeedhadHishandinthePenielproject.GodcontinuestoremindusofHiscovenant,evenwhenarainbowisnotpresent.TheWelshinWisconsincontinuethetraditionswhichGodgiftedtothosebeforetheirancestorsleftWales.HeblessesPenielinmiraculouswaysandentruststhevolunteerswithcarryingonHispromisesforthefutureofPenielandtheWelshintheOshkoshWelshSettlement.MayGod’spromisesthroughHisSonJesusChristneverbeforgotten,andmaywealwaysrelyonHimwhenourlivesseeminsurmountable.Allinall,ourweekendwasthoroughlyenjoyableweekendandcauseforencouragement.

Welsh Film Dark Horse Is a Winner
ThanksareduetocroonerMegSkinnerfromtheCambrianSingerswhoreportedbackfromtheSundanceCinemasinMadisonaboutthenewWelshfilmDarkHorse(showingthroughJuly7).
2015SundanceFilmFestivalwinner(AudienceAward:WorldCinemaDocumentary),thisisthetruestoryofadreamcometrueinSouthWales.AcleanerandbarmaidfromtheslagheapsofCefnForresthadadreamtobreedandraceherownthoroughbred,thoughneverhavingbeeninastableinherlife.Enlistingthehelpof25friendsinthevillage,thefoal(namedDreamAlliance)grewuptoraceanddefeatthefinestintheland.AstheWelshreviewKathrynWilliamsquipped,“Reviewafilmabouthorseracing,‘uh,really’wasmyfirstthought.Onehourand25minuteslaterIwastryingtoconcealtheblubbingatmydeskandsuppressthatsoaringfeelingoffist-pumpingprideandchuffednessthatDarkHorseproduced.”
Long-time Member Betty Timm Dies
ElizabethA."Betty"Timm,age87ofMonroe,diedThursday,May26,2016atSt.ClareFriedensheimfollowingacourageousbattlewithcancer. BettywasbornDecember2,1928inMonroe,thedaughterofWalterandThelma(Kundert)Timm.ShegraduatedfromMonroeHighSchoolin1946andattendedGreenCountyNormalSchool.BettyearnedaBachelorsdegreeandMastersdegreeinelementaryeducationfromU.W.Platteville.ShetaughtruralschoolbeforeteachingelementaryschoolinBrodheaduntilretirement.BettywasanavidWisconsinBadgerfanattendingmanysportingeventsandwasabigboosterofMonroeCheesemakerathletics.Sheenjoyedtravelingwithherfriends,JanetMorganandRuthPeterson.ShewasamemberofSt.John’sUnitedChurchofChrist,St.John’schoir,MonroeBoosterClub,RetiredTeachersAssociation,SweetAdelinesofAlpineValley,WelshGymanfaGanuAssociationofWisconsin,theCambrianHeritageSocietyofMadison,SymphonyoftheHills,NationalHistoricCheesemakingCenter,andRudyBurkhalter’sAccordianBand.Sheissurvivedbyhersister-in-law,BarbTimm;niecesandnephews,Dennis(Lori)Timm,Beth(Jack)Schramm,Donna(Brian)Geissbuhler,Brad(Cathy)Timm,Dudley(Henri)Timm,David(Lori)Miller,Rodney(Ann)Miller,Nancy(Barry)Boone,Jim(Audrey)Miller,Paul(Chris)Burtner;severalgrandniecesandnephews;andherfriends,JanetMorganandRuthPeterson.Shewasprecededindeathbyherparents;abrother,DonTimm;andasister,MaryMillerBurtner.FuneralserviceswereheldonTuesday,May31,2016atSt.John’sUnitedChurchofChrist,Monroe.MemorialsaresuggestedinBetty’snametotheWelshGymanfaGanuAssociationofWisconsinc/oDickMyers,9140NSycamoreCt.,Bayside,WI53217.

RUGBY NEWS FROM WALES ThisspringandsummerhasbeendisappointingforWelshrugby.ContinuingtobeplaguedbyinjuriestokeyplayersinthestartingXV,Wales‘nationalteamfellshortinitsbidtotakebacktophonorsinthe6Nationstournament.ItstriptoNewZealandinJuneledtomoredashedhopes.InFebruaryWalestiedIreland16-16,alostopportunityagainstateaminrebuildingmode,andimpressednooneinscrapingbyScotlandandFrance(27-23and19-10).ThewinnerofEnglandv.WalesatTwickenhamonMarch12wasbilledasarematchoftheWorldCup,andinareversalEnglandedgedtheRedDragons25-21.Walesreboundedwithaspectacularsecondhalfinits67-14routofItaly,buttoolate.Englandendedupundefeated(aGrandSlam),withWalesrunner-up.SummerTours
WithAlunWynJones,DanBiggar,JonathanDavies,andLiamWilliamsonthemend,hopesrevivedthattheteamcouldfinallytakeawinfromtheAllBlacks,whohavenotlosttoWalessince1953.WithDanCarter,RichieMcCawandothershavingretired,thiswasseenasavulnerableAll-Blackteamthatwasintransition.Walescompetedstronglyinthefirsttwotestmatches,butwereleftinthedustthefinal10or20minutesastheAll-Blacksbenchstrengthprovedtoomuch.ThethirdtestmatchwasawashoutforatiredWelshsquad.Scores:39-21,36-22,46-6.EnglandtouredAustraliaandwhitewashedtheAussies3-0inanupsetthatturnedheads.IrelandstunnedSouthAfricawithafirsttestvictory,butlosttwocloselycontestedgamestolosetheseries.Inothertours,ScotlandprevailedagainstJapan;FrancesplitwithArgentina;andinNorthAmerica,ItalywasedgedbyArgentinabutwonagainstCanadaandtheU.S.

TheWelshsoccerteamhascapturedtheattentionoffansthissummerwithitsadvancementtothequarterfinalsoftheEuro2016inacompetitionthathasbeenfullofsurprises,mostrecentlythedefeatofEnglandtolowly-rankedIceland.GarethBalescored3goalsinthefirst3gamesandkickedtheballthatresultedinanown-goalinthe1-0winoverNorthernIrelandintheRoundof16.WelshfansarereceivingwarmreactionsfromtheFrenchfortheirconductawayfromthestadium,andscenesofeuphoriaandcelebrationhaveeruptedinpublicTVcoverageofthematches.WalesplaysBelgiumJuly1,televisedonESPN.
