It is always amazing how quickly a year can seem to pass but when you look back on the fantastic achievements of our students and our staff it is just incredible. I would like to as always to acknowledge the outstanding commitment and diligence of our staff who work in so many different ways to provide opportunities both in and out of their classrooms to engage and interest our students. This is what makes our school such a vibrant and exciting place and really keeps our focus on being innovative, excellent, connected to the educational community as a well as a fun learning environment! A big congratulations to our 2020 P&C Executive! We are so fortunate to have such a committed and friendly P&C Executive who are very connected and supportive of our school and its community. So much of their work and participation in our planning and decision making goes unseen and I thank everyone for their work. A big yee ha to Natalie Kitchin, continuing on her role as President! A big welcome to the executive to Jacqui Pickett who will be taking on the Treasurer role and our new Vice Presidents Jo Auld and Kelly Wilkinson. The position of Secretary is vacant at this stage and we will be looking to fill this position at our first P&C meeting in February. I strongly urge you to consider helping out and putting yourself forward for this role. What an amazing Teddy Bears Picnic did we enjoy to welcome our Kindergartens for 2020. It was a lovely day and great to be able to mingle and chat with the students and their parents. It was exciting to see the various special friends that our new students brought along and we enjoyed picking out a few of these for their different attributes like most cuddly and most fluffy. Our Kindergarten numbers for 2020 are 74 enrolments at this stage which is perfect for four lovely classes. I would like to re-enforce with our parents the need to monitor and support our children with safe and appropriate use of the internet. Last week we invited Constable Jack, the Police Youth Liaison Officer out to work with our Stage 3 students on cyber-safety. Many of our students continue to be utilising inappropriate social media platforms and don’t display the level of understanding or maturity to make wise decisions around their participation in online conversations. I have spoken to our students today and reminded them of the need to call out their friends or peers who are utilising these platforms inappropriately but also to reinforce the need to not be part of these conversations. It is not acceptable to be in a group chat and not take responsibility for what is being said. It is essential that we teach our children to exit any group conversation they feel is inappropriate and also to report these to their support network be that their parents or their teachers. I also reiterated to our students the need to block people or friends who are mean in their conversations online. We are also aware that a number of our students have been passing on messages on behalf of other students when they have been blocked. This is highly unacceptable. As a school we have high expectations of our students to being kind and respectful to each other but it seems that our students sometimes see social media platforms as exempt from this. Please monitor and be proactive with your children with this. Thanks for your help on this matter. What an uplifting day we all had showing our gratitude tothose who have helped and supported us in 2019. Our annualThanksgiving celebration is a wonderful opportunity to showour appreciation to each other for all the work we do. A bigthank you to Mrs Wright and Miss Barbagallo for their workin organising such a beautiful assembly although the assemblyitem may have needed a little bit more practise. Mrs Antonelliwas very confident on the microphone and Mr Attard equallyskilled on the guitar. A big thank you to our students whoshared their gratitude with their teachers and staff members. Iwas very touched by the beautiful letters I received. Thank youto everyone!

You will have noticed a great deal of maintenance happeningaround the school. We have had some air conditionersreplaced, new interactive whiteboards, roofing replacementsand now the work has commenced on the refurbishment ofthe area between the demountables as well as the area nearMrs Smith’s room to transform these in to great areas for ourstudents. It will be exciting to see the finished work after theholidays.

Our celebration of our PLPs for our Aboriginal and Torres StraitIslander students was a very enjoyable afternoon for ourAboriginal and Torres Strait Islander community and our staff. It was fantastic to see the achievements of our students andto see how proudly they presented this to our parents. Weenjoyed a self- choreographed dance by some of our studentswhich was excellent and we really did enjoy a lovely afternoontea. A big thank you to Ms Bates, Ms Harding and Mrs McCoyfor all the effort they put in to create such a successful event!

ATTENDANCEIn a recent newsletter, Mr Wynn wrote about the importanceof students attending school every day possible and attendingon time. “Be in line by ten past nine” is a great way to havestudents quickly settled into class routines, and takingadvantage of the learning that happens at the beginning of eachday.

The target for school attendance in New South Wales is now90%. That means if you have more than 5 days off in a term, you have missed that target. Of course, if a student is ill, it isimportant that they remain home, but we want to see themback at school as soon as possible.

This year, by the end of November, 352 students, including 44Aboriginal or Torres Strait Islander students, achieved the targetof 90%. It was particularly great to see that 217 students havean attendance rate over 95%, with some students not havinga day off at all this year. Great work to those students, andthank you to their parents for ensuring that school is a priorityfor them.

Stage 3 Excursion to Bathurst and DubboIn week 6 the Stage 3 students packed their bags and travelledto Bathurst and Dubbo for four action packed days full oflearning and fun. Ryder Ashby’s Stage 3 Excursion Recount

On Monday 18th of November Stage 3 met up to go on a veryexciting camp and said their last goodbye to their parents forfour days. Stage 3 went to Dubbo zoo, Wellington caves andHill End.

The first thing we did was go to Dubbo zoo. We went for a long2 hour walk behind the scenes of the zoo. Stage 3 saw reallycool animals but it’s really sad to hear that half of the animals wesaw are going extinct. After we went behind the scenes Stage3 ate breakfast then all of Stage 3 Cambridge Gardens went onbuses driving around the zoo.

After Dubbo zoo, we went to Wellington caves. When we wentin the cave it became colder. The tour guide told us that allthe walls were made out of limestone. They found a kangaroobone and they believe it was about as tall as a student on topof a regular size human. After that we went to this place in thecave called the Thunder Dome, so whenever you were to patyour chest really hard like King Kong it would sound like thunderechoing loudly through the cave.

Later that day we went to Hill End mine shaft as we went inwe had to put on a helmet. When we went in it also got colderlike Wellington cave. The tour guide showed us the differenttools they used to find gold nuggets. We went 80m into themine. Stage 3 then had to go up a 30m ladder it was a verytight space but very fun experience. As it was getting dark weheaded home all of Stage 3 got ready to listen to some colonialmusic it was supposed to be a camp fire but due to the firesevery where there was a fire ban.

Overall this has been my favourite camp so far and I’llremember this camp in high school.

Stage 3 Camp recount by Claire Williams

On Monday 18th of November students from stage 3 cameto school all packed up to say goodbye to their parent beforethe students got on the bus for their long trip ahead of them. While the students were on their trip they did an adventurewalk at Dubbo Zoo, went gold panning at Hill End and drove toBathurst Goldfields.

4

On Tuesday the 19th of November all Stage 3 students wentbehind the scenes on an adventure walk. The zoo keeperswalked the students around the zoo in 3 different groups. 4 ofthe main animals I saw were the ring tailed lemurs, the blackrhinos, the giraffes and the hippos all of them were so cute myfavourite part was when we saw the mum and baby lemur inthe cleaning cage… it was so cute!

On Wednesday the 20th of November we went to Hill End togold pan. When we got to the lake we were gold panning andthe gold panners showed us what to do. The first step was getdirt in the pan and then put the dirt into the water then youwould tip some dirt out until a little bit of dirt is left. After that thegold panners will put your gold in a jar and you could keep, itwas so cool!

On Thursday the 21st of November we stayed at BathurstGoldfields for the whole day. After we ate breakfast we went tosee colonial people who taught us about what they did duringthe gold rush. We made damper, mud bricks and played tuga war and toss the rings and then at the end 99.9% of peoplefound gold.

Camp was so fun I wish I could go again next year.

My Time at School During the Stage 3 Excursionby Dustin Clark

On Monday 18th of November the kids going on camp startedtheir journey but I didn’t go I stayed at school counting snail trailmoney, doing art and partaking in challenges.

On Monday all the Year 6 kids that stayed back from camp wewere counting snail trail money and it came to a total of over$2400 dollars.

On Tuesday we used a hot glue gun and made wooden starsfor a kindy class, then we stuck sticks to a paddle pop stick inthe shape of a tree. We also did the Weetbix challenge wereyou have to eat a piece of Weetbix without any liquid within aminute. The aim is to stick your tongue out at the end as it madeyour mouth really dry. Alearah beat all the boys.

On Wednesday we did art again in the morning. In the middlesession we had more challenges. One of the challenges wereto see who could fit the most the most chips in their mouth.Felicity got like 39 and Brandyn got at least 40, then we gotMinties and we had to tear the rapper to make it as long aspossible… we got to eat them afterwards.

On Thursday we did art for Nurture and in the middle sessionwe did a challenge where we had three sticks and fivemarshmallows and had to make the tallest tower. Kyran won!We then all went and sat at the same table and did the chubbybunny challenge. I had a lot in my mouth but I lost count of howmany, I ended up eating the marshmallows it was yum.

That’s about it for what I did I had a lot of fun at school whilstcamp was on.

Camp by Maea Laudenbach

On Monday morning, the 18th of November, students fromStage 3, woke up early and packed their bags ready to go onschool camp. On the first day, Stage 3 went to Mount PiperPower Station, we went to Dubbo Zoo and did a behind thescenes tour, and then we did activities at Bathurst goldfields onthe last day.

On the first day of camp, we went to Mount Piper PowerStation. It took around 2 hours to get to Mount Piper PowerStation. Stage 3 had lunch for a break from the long trip, andthen we set off inside Mount Piper Power Station to watcha short film on how electricity works. After the video, we gotour hairnets, hardhats, and glasses for safety. Stage 3 got towalk around the bottom floor of the building and look at all ofthe information. The instructor/tour guide told us to keep ourhairnets, hardhats, and glasses on while we explore. Stage 3got to go outside and look at all of the buildings that help makeelectricity. Our tour guide/ instructor told Stage 3 heaps of funfacts and information about electricity and Mount Piper PowerStation. Then stage 3 got back on the bus ready to go to wherewe were staying for the night.

On Tuesday morning the 19th of November, Stage 3 woke upat around 5:00-5:30am, so we could pack their bags readyto go to Dubbo Zoo. We hopped on the bus, ready to go toDubbo Zoo. It only took 10 minutes from our accommodationto Dubbo Zoo. When we got to Dubbo Zoo, we met ourtour guides that were showing us all of the animals behindthe scenes. Stage 3 were walking around for 2 hours,(7:00-9:00am). Stage 3 saw animals they’ve never seen before. We also learnt some cool facts about the animals!! After thebehind the scenes tour, stage 3 had some delicious breakfast. We got toast and juice for breakfast. Stage 3 really enjoyed thefood they prepared for us. When we all finished eating, Stage3 took turns buying from the giftshop at Dubbo Zoo. In the giftshop were so many cool things! After the gift shop, stage 3went back onto the buses to do a tour around the front of thezoo together. We saw meerkats, tigers, elephants, black rhinos, and spider monkeys. My favourite were the meerkats becausethey were so cute. Stage 3 learnt so many fun facts about theanimals! We were all so amazed. After the zoo, we went back towhere we were staying the night. We had meat pies and chipsfor dinner. Then we all went into our rooms/cabins to go to bed.

The next morning, on the last day, stage 3 packed their bagsready to load onto the buses. We put them onto the bussesand walked over to the other side of Mount Panorama forsome activities. At first, we split into 2 groups. We walked overone of our tour guides. We then walked over to his housewhere we met his wife. They were really nice. They did a miniquiz and I got most of the answers right. Then, we got towalk through their house and it was actually really small. Wedid some activities and I did the mudbricks first. Making themudbricks is harder than it looks. After we made the mudbrickswe played games. There was the tug-of-war that I couldn’t do,sadly. There also was were you had to roll a heavy ball to a treestump and whoever rolled it the closest was the winner. And wealso had to throw a horse shoe onto a ring. All of the activitieswere heaps of fun, well, the ones I could do. After that, we gotto make DAMPER!!!!!! That was my favourite part of the day. We

5

got the dough, then put it on a stick, put it in the fire and waittill it was a golden brown. We then took it off the stick and outgolden syrup in the damper and it tasted SO GOOOOOOOD!! IfI had to eat it every day, I wouldn’t complain. When we finishedmaking damper, we did more activities around the place. Wedid gold panning, I found 4 specks of gold that is worth $2. Ialso found a cool rock that you could see through but it was agold colour as well. So, I decided to put it in my little jar. Wewere all very tired at the end of the day.

After gold panning, we got on the bus to go home. It was along trip, but I slept through most of it. We did a few stops sothat we could get food and go to the bathroom. We arrived atschool at about 5:30. Stage 3 were really exhausted and readyto go home to bed! I know I wanted to. We had so much fun oncamp, and I will never forget how much fun I had!!

Newsletter Piece for Return and EarnThis week Cambridge Gardens Public School adopted oursecond orangutan from the Orangutan Project. We haveadopted ‘Happi’ who is a three year old orangutan who wasorphaned in the Borneo jungles due to deforestation. We wereable to adopt Happi because we had fundraised enough moneyfrom our Return and Earn recycling scheme at school. This yearwe have fundraised $258.10, as we have recycled 2581 cans, bottles and containers.

Currently we have adopted Popi and Happi and we are hopingnext year to continue adopting them and raise enough moneythrough the Return and Earn scheme to adopt a thirdorangutan. Congratulations to all of the students, teachers andmembers of the community who are recycling their cans, bottles and containers at school and contributing to thisfantastic cause!

RoboticsThroughout the year a few of our students from Stage 3 havehad the opportunity to take part in our Robotics program. The program provided challenging and highly engaging learningopportunities utilising LEGO Mindstorm EV3 robots. TheRobotics program allowed students to work cooperatively withtheir peers, problem-solve, innovate, create and investigatewith technologies.

The students programmed their robots to undergo a seriesof instructions to complete real world tasks, such as movingthrough mazes and avoiding obstacles. With the addition of thenew 3D printer, the students were also asked to replicate a fewmissing parts along the way which was very challenging.

Overall the robotics program was a great success and we arelooking forward to more challenges in 2020.

Recycling Success! In March this year, Cambridge Gardens School was fortunateenough to win a major prize in the Colgate Community GardenChallenge. In this recycling program, students, staff and theirfamilies had collected old toothbrushes, toothpaste tubes, dental floss containers and associated packaging. Everythingwe collected was sent away to Terracycle to be recycled.

Our prize included two personalized garden benches, threegarden beds and some garden signs, all made from recycledmaterials. We also won $500 to spend on our garden suppliesat Bunnings.

The garden benches proudly display our school’s name, as wellas some beautiful artwork by Porschea Renata.

This is our second recycling program with Terracycle – we alsocollected old toothbrushes, toothpaste tubes, floss containersand their packaging. Earlier this year we won the beautifulgarden seats and gardens beside Wisdom room for ourrecycling efforts. These items are made of recycled plastic.

Bread tags can be placed in the labelled box outside Loyaltyclassroom each Monday, Tuesday or Wednesday.
