It was the end of an era at CDA

in October when our familiar

but elderly signs were replaced.

Deaf Trustee Godfrey Palmer,

a retired sign writer, made the

signs and put them up in the

1990's. He came back on a

bright Tuesday morning in

October, nearly 20 years later,

to take them down again. Didn't

they do well?

Here's Godfrey with the new

sign which shows off some of

what today's CDA offers to the

community.

Mr Palmer has been a trustee

of CDA for over 10 years and is

current vice-chairperson.

Cambridgeshire County Council want you to be more involved in the consultations and decisions that they make. They have produced some new guidance called ‘Working Together with Cambridgeshire County Council’ to let people know what they can expect when they are looking to change a service or hold a consultation.

Working with CDA, the Council have produced this video which is a translation of the ‘Working Together’ document which explains how the Council will take into account the views of people who live in the area. The Council commit to providing information in a range of languages, including BSL. You can watch the video on our website. In the video is Charlene Spires from Peterborough who is also a

sign language tutor for CDA’s Sign Language Academy. All the work for the video was done in-house using equipment from the new studio room being developed at Hope Hall. If you want to make your content accessible visit cambsdeaf.org/cda-media for more information and to get in touch.

We’ve been featured on BSL Zone (TV Channel for deaf people) after featuring their Who Cares? Documentary in our deaf awareness training to the Manor Care Home recently. The documentary looks at elderly care provision for Deaf people and was used to support training at a care home with a deaf resident. The training was delivered by CDA’s Andy Palmer and Ruth Godden for staff at the Manor Care Home which is run by Leonard Cheshire Disability. Andy said:"The film had a big impact. Who Cares really helps to illustrate the different needs of Deaf people in care. The

impact of poor communication with Deaf residents isn’t always at the front of people’s minds in the Care Sector but watching Who Cares? and then discussing it changes that." He added: "The delegates were moved to tears which showed the emotional impact of the documentary. Many of the

delegates said that the film helped them understand what deaf people may feel like in care if communication isn't there." Get in touch if you’d like ground-breaking deaf awareness training in your organisation

Cambridgeshire County Council are reviewing the way that they provide advocacy. At the moment, the council works with 7 different providers so that residents in the county can access advocacy services Since the Care Act came into force, local authorities have been required by law to provide certain types of advocacy. This has led to local authorities providing one contract for advocacy, wither to one provider, or to a partnership of different advocacy organisations.

CDA holds one of the contracts for advocacy and is looking to continue to provide advocacy services in Cambridgeshire. CDA Advocate Ruth Godden and Managing Director Andy Palmer have been attending meetings to make sure that sign language users retain the use of deaf advocacy in the future. Two meetings have also been held with deaf people at drop-in sessions where deaf people gave their views on advocacy provision in the county. There

were over 20 people present at each meeting. Andy said: “I think its positive that the Council have committed to making sure we have advocates that can use BSL in Cambridgeshire. I want to thank all the people who came along to the meetings to let the council know what their

Deaf Health Charity, Sign Health, have won a contract from Cambridgeshire and Peterborough NCHS to provide counselling services in BSL. They’ll be came to Peterborough and Cambridge to talk about what is available and how to access it CDA works to ensure deaf people have a say in their healthcare. We’ve held consultations on mental health and a forum with the NHS. It’s great news that Sign Health will be delivering BSL services in our area.

Cambridgeshire and Peterborough are experiencing an explosion of people wanting to learn British Sign Language. Over 70 students have begun courses with Sign Language Academy this month and

that’s in addition to the 55 students we have already taught this year so far!

All together Sign Language Academy has delivered sign language courses to 125 students since January. Enrollment has already opened for courses beginning in January 2016 in Cambridge. Jamie Billam, Sign Language Academy’s senior tutor will be teaching new level 1 and level 2 students in the new year. You can enrol for those courses here or register your interest for other up coming BSL courses Courses are often over subscribed so potential learners are advised to enrol as quickly as possible to avoid disappointment.

UK members of audio enthusiasts forum Head-Fi have donated money the Cambridgeshire Deaf Association for the second time.

A spokesperson for the group said: “On Saturday 25th April 2015 a group of audio enthusiasts held their annual meeting in Bar Hill Village Hall.

“We are members of an online forum (www.head-fi.org) that concentrates on personal audio, so equipment like headphones, amplifiers and digital audio players. The forum rationale is very much about

supporting each other and offering help and advice to new members.

“Every year we hold a national event and attendees bring their gear for fellow members to audition and try out. This years charity raffle raised £1,300 and we would like to donate this sum to the Cambridgeshire Deaf Association.

“Our reason for choosing to support the CDA is simple, as an organisation it provides invaluable assistance to deaf people enabling them to live independent lives, which is crucial to a persons sense of

well being and personal fulfilment”

Andy Palmer, Managing Director of CDA said: “The generosity of Head-Fi members in the UK is something we really appreciate. Their support means we can work on important projects supporting the independence of deaf people in Cambridgeshire.

“Without the support of the people in Head-Fi UK we wouldn’t be able to do all the things we do. Thank you!”

Members of Cambridgeshire Deaf Church

held a fantastic Harvest Festival Celebra-

tion at Hope Hall. Plenty of food was do-

nated that was given to Jimmy’s Night

Shelter, which is a place for homeless

people to take refuge.

Over 60 deaf people were at

the Fenland Drop-in in April

when Norwich Deaf Cub paid a

visit.

Organiser Christine Pape said

the day was a great success.

Everyone was fed with bangers

and mash and there followed a

raffle and bingo with some big

prizes on offer.

Every two-years, Fenland Drop

-in invites deaf people from

around the UK to visit.

Former trustee Steve Curry

was re-elected to the board of

trustees at the AGM. Steve,

who has extensive experience

in running clubs and

associations for deaf people,

was unanimously voted on to

the board.

Steve has been serving on the

board of trustees since January

when he was invited to join by

the current members.

The Freedom Programme is a course that educates women

about recognising the signs of domestic abuse, that they’re not

to blame and why it is happening.

It was Bingo night at Cambridge Deaf Club on Saturday 21st. Here’s the winners Julie Garner, Colin Garner, Rodney Hopkins and Helen Perry!

Skywatch News David Kettle and I arrived at Thorney Toll Village Hall to meet the caretaker of the hall. He was very nice & stayed while we were there and was able to serve us drinks. This was a new venue for our Skywatch club on Saturday 17

th October. The hall was very nice & clean and had plenty

of room for parking and a large field, great for astronomy on a clear night. Nine people came & we all enjoyed the evening. David and I spoke about the sky & the use of computers etc. (See photo) Next meeting will be held on Saturday 23

rd January 2016 at Thorney Toll Village Hall – 7pm till

10pm.

We are delighted to welcome

our new Caseworker, Kayleigh

Wilson. Kayleigh, who lives in

Godmanchester, has previously

worked for RAD in Essex

supporting deaf people and

joins us from her role at

Cambridgeshire County

Council where she works for

the Social Care Team providing

specialist equipment for deaf

people.

Kayleigh will begin work on

10th November.

Welcome to the team!

A new monthly event for deaf people in Cambridge took place in October in the heart of one of the city’s most popular shopping centres. BHS and CDA have teamed up to create Cambridge Deaf Coffee Morning which will be

on every second Wednesday of the month at the popular BHS Cafe. The first session went well with 11 people there to enjoy the facilities, fare and company. Julie Garner from Cherry Hinton, pictured with Charlene Spires, will be running the event and it was her idea to create the event for the local deaf community. Thanks Julie and thanks to Paul and the team at BHS for

their support!

Page 15: Cambridgeshire Deaf News Autumn Winter 2015

The CDA would like to thank David Fairey for all his work with the charity's IT systems. We have been fortunate that David has been volunteering for CDA for a number of years and in that time set up the office network system, maintained staff computers and set up the Wifi sys-tem in the hall and bar. After more than two years hard work, David decided to stand down from his roles in October and he leaves the charity’s IT systems in a far better state than he found them in. Thanks again, David! CDA is now looking for a new professional IT services provider.

A team of runners from CDA’s Peterborough Deaf

Drop in took part in the Great Eastern fun run on

Sunday 11th October.

Ky Dai and daughter Zara, Antony Haywood, Duc

Dai and Truyen Dai completed the 5km course with

thousands of other runners. They were raising

money for Living Sport, the county sports

partnership that are working with UK Deaf Sport and

CDA in the county to provide more sporting

opportunities for deaf people.

Leicester City Women’s deaf England football

star came to join in with the training at Posh

Deaf on Monday 19th October. Rebecca Kemp

joined in with the team as they trained and

prepare for their first games soon.

Peterborough United’s deaf

football were defeated by a late

Barnet goal in the English Deaf

League Southern Division on

Saturday 10th October.

The Posh had got themselves

back into the game after going

two-nil down. Qadeer Hussain

from Peterborough scored both

but then local lad Matthew

Wheeler, who is from Chatteris

but plays for Barnet, lobbed the

keeper in the dying minutes to

win the game.

Peterborough Manager, Steve Long, who is learning sign language with CDA’s Sign Language Academy, said he was disappointed with the

result but thought that there were positives. Peterborough’s next game is away to Charlton on 25

th

October at 2pm. The good news was that Peterborough won their first ever deaf league match at home against Brighton and won the match 4-1 with Qadeer Hussain, Michael Bedford and Stephen Sear getting the goals. More information can be found at www.poshdeaf.com
