Introduction!

• The scientific name for camel is Camelus Dromedarius

• There are two different kinds of camels: – Bactrian camel– Dromedary camel

What A Domedary Camel Looks Like!!!

Domedary Camels have:•Brown/beige, curly, fuzzy hair all over their body•Stand more than 7 feet tall•They are 7-11 feet long•From the ground to their hump is 6 to 7 ½ feet•They weigh between 600 to 1,500 pounds•Two toed feet on each leg

What They Look Like Continued:• Domedary camels have one hump on their back even though other camels

have two humps• Large eyes with double layers of long eye lashes• Big eyebrow ridge…like a uni-brow• Skinny legs with thick callouses on their knees and chest• Long rope like tail• Sharp teeth and a split upper lip• They have a long snout and their mouth always looks like they are smiling• Two small ears sit on the top, back part of their head

Living!Endangered• Dromedary Camels are

not endangered but the Bactrian Camel (two humps) is at critical risk!!

Lifespan• They live up to 50-40

years

Habitat!• They live in deserts!• Dromedary Camels live in Northern Africa!• They live in hot and dry places like Asia and

Australia!• They live in sandy places!

Climate!

• They have hot dry days!• They only get very little rain!• They get sand storms!• All of their days are very sunny!

Landforms!• Deserts can be very hilly!• Also they can be very flat!• But deserts will always have sand!

Food They Eat!

• Camels are omnivores!• They eat plants and meat they eat almost anything!• They eat any seeds and plants that they can find!• They also eat fish!• If they live in the wild they find their own food!

Hunting!PREY!

• Dromedary Camels are domesticated working animals!

• They do not have prey because they are pets for working!

PREATDOR!• Dromedary Camels are not

predators because they are working pets!

• Their only predator are some people eat camel!

Behavior!• They are working animals like

horses!• They provide milk , food , and

transportation for people!• Camels are very smart animals!• They have very good hearing and

eye sight!• They are patient and calm when

treated nicely! • They also grunt and groan!

Reproduction!• The mother gives

birth to one calf!• The baby drinks the

mothers milk for 1-2 years!

• The mother is pregnant for 12-14 months!

• And the baby weighs 80 pounds!

What It Looks Like And How It Helps Them Adapt To Their Environment!

• They have long eye lashes to keep the sand out of their eyes!

• Camels nostrils can open and close so no sand gets up their noses!

• Split lip so they can split thorns without cutting their lip!

• They have pads on their chest, knees, and feet so they don’t get burned when they lie down in the hot sand!

• The shape of their feet helps them stay on top of the sand!

• They have a eye lid that still lets light in but keeps the sand out!

How They Act and How That Helps Them Adapt to Their Environment

• A camel can go a week or more without water!• And several months without food• They can drink up to 32 gallons of water in one drinking

session!• When a camel eats they only eat a few leafs of a tree at a time

so they don’t wipe out all of the food all at one time!

How Their Insides Help Them Adapt to Their Environment

• Camels have oval shaped red blood cells this helps them when they have not had water in a little while!

• The kidneys are very good at retaining water!

• Camels store fat inside their humps not water!

• Unlike other mammals a camels body temperature changes throughout the day as the temperature gets hotter and cooler!

Fun Facts About Camels

• Camels are sometimes pets for working!

• Their poop is so dry that it can be used for fire starters!

• When a camel spits it is really throwing up!
