GENERAL INFORMATION

Welcome to Camp Piuta. We trust you will thoroughly enjoy this beautiful camp.

Camp Piuta is located in the Soapstone Basin of the Wasatch National Forest, about 20 miles east

of Kamas, Utah. Its location in the Uintah Mountains among a stand of mature pine trees at an

elevation of 8,900 feet makes it a delightful site during the summer months. The Camp is used

for about 10 weeks each summer, primarily as a camp for young women.

Camp Piuta is used under a special use permit issued by the Forest Service to 9 LDS Stakes in

the South Davis County area. Because it is located within a National Forest, all visitors must

observe Forest Service rules that serve to preserve this pristine land and enhance the experience

of everyone who visits the area.

Structures within the Camp include a lodge, 14 cabins, three bathhouses, an amphitheater, and a

caretaker cabin. The Camp is supplied with good drinking water from a nearby spring, provided

through an underground system to the lodge, bathhouses, and faucets near the cabins. Propane

water heaters provide hot water to the lodge and bathhouses.

The Piuta web-site contains wonderful information and photographs, which will help you

become acquainted with this beautiful and sacred facility. It will also provide valuable

information as you prepare for your experience at camp.

Caretakers

A couple serves as Camp Caretakers who ensure the Camp is used as it should be so it can be

enjoyed for many years. Groups may only use Camp Piuta when the Caretakers are present. The

Caretakers are there to help all campers have a great experience. Each camper is responsible to

understand and follow Camp rules including any rules not in this manual, but conveyed by the

Caretakers. Group leaders must ensure that all individuals in their group respect the Camp

Caretakers.

Lodge

The lodge includes a large furnished kitchen, a large common area with a fireplace and tables,

two bathrooms, three bedrooms and a loft. See page 6 and 7 of this manual for details. Electricity

is supplied to the lodge by a propane generator which typically is operated a few hours each day.

Bath Houses

Three frame bath houses are located close to the cabins. Each contains four toilets partitioned by

plywood walls along with plastic curtains for privacy, four showers separated by plastic curtains,

and two sinks.

Cabins

The 14 wood frame cabins each have cement floors, windows, and a locking door. Each cabin

contains seven wood bunk beds, each bunk sleeping two. There are no mattresses on the wood

bunk frames. A fire pit, water faucet and at least one picnic table are located near each cabin.

Tent Sites

Camp Piuta is built on a slope, so level tent sites are scarce. There are three-to-four excellent

sites, and several others on slopes. The area surrounding the Camp includes many possible tent

sites.

Generator

The generator is to be operated only by the Camp Manager and Caretakers. It is the responsibility

of the stakes and the Camp Caretakers to coordinate the use of the generator each day. To ensure

the longest life possible for the generator and economize on fuel usage the generator is on at

limited times during the day in order to keep freezers cold. Generator is turned off by 10:00 p.m.

Emergency Megaphone / Horn

In the event of an emergency, a Camp Emergency Megaphone / Horn is located on the wall of the

lodge. This Megaphone / Horn is for Emergency Use Only! No other use is permitted.

Satellite Phone

The camp satellite phone is used by the Camp Manager and Caretakers exclusively. The phone is

used for emergency calls out of camp. Be aware that due to the difficulty of reception, incoming

calls are not reliable, and there is no voice mail service.

Groups should designate one individual at home as a contact person for relaying emergency

messages to Camp. Parents should call this contact person with any emergency message. Only

the designated contact shall have the number of the Camp satellite phone and be authorized to

contact camp caretakers. Due to reception difficulties, it is likely that the phone call will not be

received. Parents should not be given the Camp satellite phone number. The satellite phone

number is:

Bears

Camp Piuta is in Black Bear territory, but a sighting or encounter would be rare. During the

summer of 2001, one bear came to Piuta and was ultimately killed by a Utah Division of Wildlife

Resources officer because he felt the bear would not leave. Following this event, the Camp was

asked to only cook indoors for the remainder of the summer.

It is critical that all Piuta campers obey the following DWR suggestions to keep wild bears away

from the Camp, and to keep all campers safe:

• Keep a clean campsite. Store all coolers, food and utensils in your vehicle (cabin or lodge

also OK). Store your food in a secure location such as the trunk of your car, a bear proof

container or hang food items in a tree at least ten feet from the ground and five feet from

the trunk of the tree. Never leave food or trash on the ground.

• Food scraps and fat drippings should be placed in a sealed, airtight container, not in the

campfire.

• Do not cook in your tent or near your sleeping area. Your sleeping area should be at least

100 yards from the cooking and eating areas.

• Do not sleep in the clothing you cooked in.

If You Encounter a Bear

• STAY CALM!

• Do not make direct eye contact. Bears perceive eye contact as aggressive behavior.

• Make noise, yell, clap your hands, bang pots or throw rocks to scare it away.

• NEVER approach a bear or let it approach you. If it does approach you, retreat slowly.

• If you are attacked and cannot get away, fight back, kick, scream and yell! Be aggressive.

Fire

In the event of fire in or around Camp Piuta, all persons will evacuate to the parking lot. A

warning signal will sound from the emergency megaphone located at the lodge. Instructions will

be given by the person in charge at the camp at the time. If necessary and possible, all persons

will be evacuated by vehicle out of the area.

High Winds

In the event of high winds or strong winds all persons will go to the lodge and remain there until

the winds have calmed to a safe condition. The concern is trees falling on persons, structures,

and/or vehicles. The leader in charge at the time will determine when it is safe to leave the lodge

and continue normal activity.

REQUIRED and SUGGESTED SUPPLIES

Required Supplies: (to be furnished by Stake & Wards during their stays at Piuta) 1. Dish towels and hot pads to use in the lodge kitchen. The kitchen is equipped with pots,

pans and other cooking items.

2. Toilet paper for: 2 lodge bathrooms

3 bathhouses (4 stalls in each)

3. Paper towels. Same locations

4. Garbage can liners:

5 large (39 gal) cans in the lodge - heavy duty or enough to double bag

5 small cans in lodge - kitchen size

14 large cans inside cabins, 14 small cans inside cabins

3 bathhouses with 4 small (22" x 24") cans and one large can each

For the small cans you may use plastic grocery bags. You will need enough to

change several times a day.

Heavy duty garbage bags for disposal of cooled ashes.

Disposable tampon bags to be kept in each toilet stall.

5. Table covers. (Paper so it can be burned, or plastic to be washed and reused.)

6. Plates and cups. (Heavy duty paper plates and cups work better than plastic which can't

be burned.)

7. Knives, forks and spoons. (Lodge only has enough for small groups.)

8. Cleaning supplies for the lodge kitchen. (Some cleaning supplies for the lodge kitchen,

restrooms and bathhouses are furnished by the Camp.) Hand soap, air fresheners, hand

sanitizers, etc. to be furnished by campers

9. Foam pads or air mattresses for those sleeping in the cabins and the lodge loft. There are

wood frame bunks in the cabins and 20 steel bed frames in the lodge loft. Older girls who

may use the loft must use Bathhouse #1.

10. First-aid supplies to meet the needs of your group.

11. Shovel for maintaining fires and fire pits.

Suggested Supplies:

1. Dining flys or plastic covers for Camp areas/firewood in case of rain. 2. Volleyball, if wanted. (Camp has stands and nets)

3. Archery arrows – with target tips only, if wanted. (Camp has bows)

4. Firewood availability inside the Camp area varies from year to year. Firewood can be

gathered and hauled in from areas outside the Camp.

ORIENTATION

It is best to go over these rules at the beginning of camp with all campers.

1. U.S. Forest Service rules, which all campers must follow, include:

No propane or gas lanterns in cabins, bathhouses or lodge. Battery powered OK.

Fires must be supervised and only in designated, established fire bowls. No large fires.

(The Forest Service may prohibit all open flames, even in designated fire pits)

Put fires dead-out when unattended.

Do not pick the wild flowers.

No firearms or ammunition of any kind

No weapons of any kind.

No fireworks of any kind.

No vehicles off-road, including within the Camp.

Only two camper vehicles allowed in Camp area at any time during loading and

unloading of equipment.

Do not damage, nail or screw into, carve or mark on trees or rocks.

Structures must be free-standing, without disturbing nature.

2. Do not litter. Pick up any trash you see. Please help keep Piuta beautiful.

3. Stay on marked paths and trails.

4. Always hold down toilet handles until all water flushes.

5. Flush nothing but toilet paper (no tampons, wrappers, paper towels, etc.).

6. Those who are destructive to the Camp or others will be sent home.

7. Do not write or carve on or in cabins, picnic tables, or anywhere on or in the lodge or

bathhouses.

8. Do not place hot items on picnic tables – this melts and burns the table tops.

9. No candles in cabins, lodge or bathhouses.

10. No pets allowed in Camp area.

11. No ATVs, RVs, motorcycles, etc., or horses allowed in the Camp area. The Camp

Caretaker’s ATV “mule” is the only ATV permitted. This ATV is not for camper use, but

may provide access and transportation for campers with special needs. This use should

be scheduled with and under direction of the Caretakers. Caretakers are the only

operators of the ATV.

12. For a list of suggested Forest Service or Camp Service Projects contact the Camp

Caretakers.

CAMP EQUIPMENT and GUIDELINES

Lodge: One large 8’x10’ walk-in (restaurant style) propane refrigerator. To maintain proper

temperature keep door closed and avoid frequent opening of door.

Two propane refrigerators (with small freezers). Check pilot light frequently to ensure it is lit.

Two electric freezers (generator powered). These keep most frozen items frozen except ice

cream which requires dry ice. Ensure that freezer doors are kept closed.

Four propane ovens with large grill or burner surfaces. Check pilot light frequently to ensure it

is lit.

Water heater. Check pilot light frequently to ensure it is lit. Conserve water; hot water is

limited.

22 folding tables with benches and three tables with benches in front cement area.

300 can be served if eating times are staggered. No writing on tables. Please cover tables for

crafts.

Fireplace and two amphitheater pits. Do not burn cans, glass bottles, plastic, Styrofoam, or

aluminum foil. Clean fireplace and pits when needed; make sure smoldering ashes are doused

completely before putting into the red ash cans.

Outside spot lights. Turn on at breaker panel by kitchen / back door of lodge. Lights out by

10:00 p.m.

Brooms, dust pans, and mops are provided.

Two bathrooms with toilets and showers. DO NOT put sanitary napkins, tampons or tampon

holders, paper towels, or anything except toilet paper in toilets. Take quick showers; hot water is

limited.

Three bedrooms with 15 beds (mostly bunks). Beds have old mattresses, but no bedding.

Loft with 20 steel bed frames. No mattresses.

Food area. All food must be kept inside the lodge (no tents). (Bear country precautions.) Dutch

oven cooking works well in outside area behind lodge. Do NOT Dutch oven cook in lodge.

Garbage handling. No garbage is to be left outside. Burn as much garbage as possible. All

garbage that can't be burned must be taken out of camp daily by Priesthood brothern.

(Do not burn cans, plastic, glass bottles, Styrofoam, or aluminum foil.) Do not leave food or

trash on the ground. (Bear country precautions.)

Cabins:

DO NOT write on cabins. Those that do so will be responsible for repainting before they leave

camp. Leaders should periodically inspect cabins to ensure that no vulgar writing exists.

Immediately paint over any offensive graffiti.

Seven wood bunk frames (no mattresses). Each bunk sleeps two for approximately 14 beds

per cabin.

Camp tables outside each cabin. No writing on tables. Please cover tables for crafts.

Food storage. All food must be kept inside the cabins. (Bear country precautions.)

Keep doors shut to discourage rodents. Be gentle opening and closing windows and doors.

Lanterns and stoves. Gasoline (propane, etc.) lanterns and stoves must not be used inside

cabins. Use only battery powered flashlights and lanterns inside cabins.

Broom, dust pan, waste basket, inside garbage can and fire extinguisher are provided for

each cabin. Keep cabins clean at all times. No garbage is to be left outside. (Bear country

precaution.)

Fire pits and red ash cans. Do not burn cans, plastic, glass bottles, Styrofoam, or aluminum

foil. Clean out pits when needed; make sure smoldering ashes are doused completely before

putting into the red ash cans.

Water Faucet. A water faucet is available near each cabin. Faucets provide a supply of

drinking or cooking water. Hand washing is permitted, but washing dishes or other items is

prohibited.

Bathhouses:

Leaders are to check bathhouses at least once a day.

Toilets. Always hold down handle until all water flushes. Flush nothing but toilet paper. DO

NOT put paper towels, sanitary napkins, tampons, or tampon holders in toilets.

Conserve water. Hot water is extremely limited. Take quick showers.

Hose, broom, four waste baskets, and garbage can are located in each bathhouse. Keep

bathhouses clean at all times.

Keep doors shut to discourage rodents. Be gentle opening and closing windows and doors.

Gate, Parking and Vehicles:

Park vehicles outside gate in parking lot. Keep vehicles locked at all times.

Gate. Caretakers control the gate. The Gate will only be left unlocked during loading and

unloading. Only two vehicles are allowed past the gate at any one time for loading and unloading

of equipment. Campers are required to keep one vehicle in Camp at all times for emergency

purposes. (A maximum of one vehicle is allowed.) The Caretakers are allowed to park inside the

gate by the lodge.

No ATVs, motorcycles or RVs are allowed in camp at anytime.

ARRIVAL

Check in Time. Check in time is no earlier than 10:00 a.m. Groups should not all arrive at the

same time. Staggering arrival times by 30 minutes makes a dramatic difference.

Initial Inspection. A leader and the Caretakers will make an initial inspection of all camp

facilities.

Cabin Assignment. Assign cabins before leaving parking area; this will allow smoother

unloading.

Unloading. Only vehicles loaded with heavy camp equipment and/or food will be allowed into

the camp area for unloading. A maximum of two vehicles are allowed past the gate at any one

time. Drivers should remain with the vehicle while in camp. Vehicles must return to parking lot

immediately upon unloading. Campers (including youth) must carry personal items, sleeping

bags, clothes, etc., from parking area to cabins. (Special provisions will be made for physically

handicapped persons.)

Ash Disposal. After unloading, empty red ash cans from prior group into heavy garbage bags or

other containers. The first adult to leave camp should take ashes for disposal to home facilities.

Vehicles. One vehicle may be parked at the lodge for emergency purposes and to ferry heavy

items from the parking area to Camp areas. All other vehicles must stay in the parking area and

should be kept locked at all times.

CLEAN UP and DEPARTURE

General:

Check Out Time. Check out time is to be completed no later than 12:00 noon, unless special

arrangements have been made with the Caretakers.

Loading. Only vehicles to be loaded with heavy camp equipment and/or food will be allowed

into the camp area for loading. A maximum of two vehicles are allowed past the gate at any one

time. Drivers should remain with the vehicle while in camp. Vehicles must return to parking lot

immediately upon loading. Campers will carry their personal items, sleeping bags, clothes etc.

from cabins to parking area for loading.

Garbage. All garbage must be hauled out by campers, including garbage from lodge and

bathhouses.

Fire pits. Clean out fire pits and put ashes in red cans (leave partially burned logs in pits). Place

the cans by road for pickup and disposal by next camp group when the ashes have cooled. Fire

pits should not have any cans, bottles or foil left in them. Take ashes off premises. Place clean

black garbage bag liner in red can.

Final Inspection. Do not leave Camp until all facilities have been checked and clearance

received for departure from the Caretakers.

Lodge:

Kitchen.

Clean inside of walk-in refrigerator, standard refrigerators and freezers. Remove all food

and supplies. Grill cleaned and lightly oiled

Ovens cleaned and foil wiped or replaced with new

Grease holders emptied and cleaned

All equipment properly placed

Cupboards clean

Replace garbage can liners

Sweep and mop floors

Mop the kitchen floor, hanging mops outside to dry

Hall, Bedrooms and Loft. Sweep floors and mop up any spills

Cabins:

Check under bunks, on top of bunks, overhead boards, and in windows for belongings

Clean any garbage or dirt out of bunks

Leave broom and dust pan in each cabin and fill fire extinguisher

Empty garbage, leave a clean liner in garbage can

Area around the cabin should be free of all trash

Check for writing on inside or outside of cabin, removing or painting over any found

Sweep and mop up any spills

Close windows and door

Inform Caretakers of any needed repairs at the time of departure inspection

Inspection by Caretakers along with a leader and two youth prior to departure

Bath Houses:

Cleaning equipment and supplies are located in each bathhouse.

Spray boards with disinfectant

Clean toilets and spray with disinfectant

Clean wash basins with disinfectant

Empty all garbage, replace all garbage can liners

Leave one roll of toilet paper in each stall

Leave the broom, dust pan, and mop in place

Make sure fire extinguisher is full and in place

Insure all curtains in shower and toilet area are properly hung

Clean floors: lift up shower floorboards and prop against walls, hose entire floor except under

water heater. Sweep out water and mop if needed

Outside area should be free of all trash

Check for writing on inside or outside of bath house, removing or painting over any found

Inform Caretakers of any needed repairs at the time of departure inspection

Inspection by Caretakers along with a leader and two youth prior to departure

Rainstorms are common place in the Uintas. Remember to keep things in cabins and firewood

covered in case of showers.

June

June is still cool at this elevation in the Uintas and several storms may occur during the first two

weeks. There is usually one snowstorm sometime during early June.

The nights are cold; blankets and warm sleeping bags are a must. Many mornings have frost, so

bring warm clothing, too. The end of June is usually great.

July

July at Piuta is like May in Davis County. Afternoon temperatures are pleasant, but the nights are

nearly always chilly. Winds are usually light except near thundershowers.

The mornings may start off clear, but almost every afternoon has clouds with showers over the

mountain peaks. Several hard showers usually reach Piuta during July.

HOW TO GET TO CAMP PlUTA

Go to Kamas. Turn right at the main intersection (start counting miles).

Go south toward Francis.

At the Francis intersection, go left (east) toward Woodland on Highway 35 East.

Stay on Highway 35 to the Soapstone Pass turnoff (left). It is 18.2 miles from

the Kamas intersection to the Soapstone Pass turn-off and is paved all the way.

The turn is just past mile marker 16.

Stay on the main dirt road going north -Highway 037. Turn left at Piuta sign.

It is about 2.5 miles from the Soapstone Pass turn-off to Camp Piuta.

You can also get to Camp Piuta traveling along the Mirror Lake Highway,

turning off (right) at the Soapstone Basin road, Highway 037, 15 miles out

of Kamas. Travel along 5 miles of unpaved road to Piuta (stay right at all

the intersections).
