New Jersey State Funeral Directors Association; Garden State Funeral Directors Association; Delta Upsilon Chapter of Omega Psi Phi Fraternity, Inc.; American Legion Mitchell A. Davis Post #182; Pride of Trenton #1118; and King David Lodge #15 F.&A.M.-P.H.A. John proudly served on the Mercer County Community College Advisory Board for Funeral Service. He was also a long-time member of Friendship Baptist Church in Trenton, N.J.

John knew, better than most, how important it is to enjoy life. In his down time, he could be found doing just that in one of his three favorite places: Sam’s Club, Whole Foods, or Dunkin’ Donuts—proudly donning the green and white of the Philadelphia Eagles, if it was football season. John loved spending time with his family, from road trips with his wife and children to visiting with his mother and uncles. John’s life was evidence of his love for the sport of boxing: He kept his feet rmly planted, and he had an incredible reach.

John was preceded in death by his father, Loyd Campbell; his sisters, Sarah Campbell and Barbara Stephens; and brothers, Loyd and Elton Campbell.

He leaves to cherish fond memories: his loving and devoted wife of 45 years, Elouise "Dee" Finch- Campbell; mother, Leola Campbell of Norlina, N.C.; daughters, Candance Campbell of Pine Hill, N.J., Sheree Campbell of Trenton, N.J., and Priscilla Brim (Vernon) of Burlington, N.J.; sons, Donnie Jones ( Joanne) of Newark, N.J., Dennis Campbell of Reading, Pa., Bobbie Jones (Shelly) of Trenton, N.J.; sisters, Shirley Townes of Richmond, Va., Patricia Spruill (Howard) of Willingboro, N.J., Dorothy Brewer ( John) of Virginia Beach, Va.; brothers, Burnice Campbell of Milton, Fla., James Campbell of Trenton, N.J., William Campbell of Spain, Darnell Shabazz (Vernell) of Trenton, N.J.; half-sister, Delmar Mason of Baltimore, Md.; uncles, James Earl Campbell and George Campbell (Deborah), both of Norlina, N.C.; sisters-in-law, Norma Jean ompson of Dayton, Ohio, Charlene Greene ( James) of Columbus, Ohio, Vivian Courts (Keith) of Dayton, Ohio, Justine Bush ( James) of Marietta, Ga., Annie Hughes ( James) of Charlotte, N.C.; brother-in-law, Charles Finch (Debbie) of Browns Mills, N.J.; trust-ed colleague, Deborah Vereen of Ewing Township, N.J.; and a host of other relatives and friends.

Mr. John Thurman CampbellJohn urman Campbell, a mighty spirit who helped usher souls to their nal resting place for more than 40 years, passed away surrounded by family. He was 73 years old.

Born in Norlina, N.C., John was educated in the Warren County Public School System. As a teenager, he hung around doing odd jobs for the Norlina funeral home, which rst fostered his interest in funeral service. At 16 years old, John moved to New Jersey and completed his secondary education in Trenton public schools. He then served in the United States Armed Forces from 1965 to 1967 and was honorably discharged from the Army Reserves in 1971.

John continued to learn and grow, earning associate degrees in Applied Science (Mercer County Community College, 1974) and Funeral Science (American Academy McAllister Institute, 1975), and a Bachelor of Science in Finance (Kean College of New Jersey, 1976). Armed with the knowledge of his industry, an entrepreneurial spirit, and a desire to serve others, John began his career in funeral service. He earned his rst internship with James Funeral Home in Perth Amboy, N.J., and completed his apprenticeship with Perry’s Funeral Home in Newark, N.J. John became a licensed funeral director in the State of New Jersey in 1976. Later, in 1991, he would also become licensed in Pennsylvania.

For a time, John worked as a long-haul trucker, driving for a variety of companies, including: AAA Trucking, Needham Trucking, Becker Trucking, and Anchor Trucking Services. But he was called to be a steward, not a shipper. So on May 23, 1982, John fullled his dream and committed to his calling; with the help of his loyal wife Elouise, John opened the doors of Campbell Funeral Chapel in Trenton, N.J. He served as Executive Director for 35 years and had the immense honor of serving so many remarkable families.

When he wasn’t bringing comfort to families, John was contributing to his community as an active member of the following organizations: National Funeral Directors Association;
