Garden stepsWinter weather is still upon us and you‘re already obsessed with the thought of transforming your garden into a haven of peace for reading and for romantic suppers. But there is one problem: your backyard slopes. What can be done? Why not create different levels by designing a series of steps?

Adding steps in a backyard which slopes either up or down will not only make it easier to move around in, but will improve its appearance, its safety and it will probably get a lot more use. However, step building has to follow certain rules, especially where safety is concerned. This is why the materials used as well as the dimensions are so important in guaranteeing stability.

Depending on the slope of the land, the height

of each step should not exceed 15 cm. And if you think you will need more than eight steps, it would be advisable to create some kind of platform halfway up. Where materials are concerned you have lots of choice: natural stone, logs, treated wood, concrete...

However, reconstituted stone is gaining in popularity as its appearance is so very close to that of natural stone. These steps are easy to install because preassembled, reconstituted stone step modules are available on the market. All that will remain to be done is the application of a waterproof coating which protects the stone, avoiding the development of moss in shady areas and facilitating the removal of stains caused by daily use. Planting flowers, ferns or shrubs around your steps will enhance their beauty, so be sure to leave plenty of room for this landscaping work.

Talk of colour usually means paint; but not just any colour, anyhow, a n y w h e r e . Deciding on a colour is more than choosing between lime green or apple green. It’s more than favouring beige over pink. The atmosphere of a room, of a home, depends on the choice of colours and their juxtaposition. Time is needed to visit decorating shops, to read and to consult the experts.

There are two types of paint on the market: oil (alkyd) and water (latex).

Oil paints are more resistant than water-based paints but any splashes and accessories, such as brushes and rollers, must be cleaned with a solvent. Water-based paints contain fewer VOCs (volatile organic compounds) and can be cleaned with water. For kitchens and bathrooms it is preferable to use oil-based paints.

These two types of paint are available in four main finishes: glossy, semi-gloss, satin and matte. Glossy paints are the most resistant and are ideal for protecting baseboards. Matte paints are best for low-traffic areas and bestow a p e a c e f u l atmosphere to any room.

Whatever your choice of paint, you should never compromise on its quality. The better

the quality, the easier it is to apply and the longer it will retain its original colour.
