No one was injured, but damage from a house fire on South Murphy St. Friday morning is extensive.
And a community effort is build-ing to help the tenants of the burned house, Trevor and Natalie MacLeod and their two children, aged three and seven.
“At 10:38 am on Friday, Jan. 9, Campbell River Fire Crews responded to a call about a possible chimney fire at a single family resi-dence at 97 South Murphy St. When crews arrived there was heavy smoke coming from all sides of the struc-ture,” say Deputy Fire Chief Thomas Doherty. “We requested help from additional crews to respond from both fire stations, and when fire fighters went into the house to try to extinguish the flames, they dis-covered extreme fire conditions, and an area of the floor had collapsed. Crews quickly withdrew from inside the house and began fighting the fire from the exterior of the building to knock down the flames and prevent the fire from spreading to neigh-bouring buildings.”
No one was home at the time of the fire, and the cause of the fire is under investigation. The home was insured but the MacLeods have lost all their belongings.
Anyone wishing to help the MacLeods can make a cash dona-tion at either branch of the Coastal Community Credit Union. Apply it to “MacLeod Family in trust.”
You can also go to the Campbell River Mirror’s website and access the BlackPress 4Good fundraising site. Click on the 4Good button at the top of www.campbellrivermir-ror.com and search for “Help the MacLeod Family.” (https://fundrazr.com/campaigns/8vUtb)

Campbell River Crime Stoppers is celebrating its most successful year in its history thanks to the use of social media.
Pat Patterson, the coordinator and only paid member of Crime Stop-pers, told the Strathcona Regional District that the number of tips and phone calls received and the level of engagement on platforms such as Facebook and Twitter were all up in 2014.
“I stood here last year and said that in 2013 Campbell River Crime Stoppers had their best year in their 24-year history,” Patterson said dur-ing a presentation to the regional district board at its Jan. 7 meeting. “I’m going to stand here now and tell you that 2014 is our best year in our history. We’ve blown the stats out of the water from last year.”
Crime Stoppers took 66 more calls in 2014 over the previous year, increased its Facebook page views by 61,258, or 25 per cent, received 66 more tips, helped provide informa-tion that led to 35 more arrests, and helped the RCMP to clear 58 more cases than in 2013.
Patterson said while it’s not a com-petition, year over year, the num-bers for 2014 are an indication that people care about their community

and are willing to get involved. Patterson also acknowledged the use of social media and the Internet, which provides Crime Stoppers with a broader reach.
When a body was found last summer in the Oyster River, pho-tos posted by Crime Stoppers of the victim’s T-shirt generated valu-able tips for police.
“The RCMP had the file for over 30 days, couldn’t I.D. who the person was,” Patterson said. “Crime Stoppers posted the photo and within 22 hours we had a name.”
And af ter human remains from Cortes Island were given to a Campbell River thrift store in a box, Crime Stoppers posted photos of the woman at the store and Patterson said that in less than 24 hours, Crime Stoppers received three tips with the name of the lady who brought
the bones in.Patterson said because
Crime Stoppers allows those with knowledge of a crime to anonymously report what they know without fear of reprisal, it often encourages those who may be too close to the criminal to come for-ward.
Patterson said Crime Stoppers deals with a lot of those types of cases – people not inclined to go to police but under the cloak of anonymity, feel comfortable approaching Crime Stoppers.
As coordinator, Pat-terson is responsible for taking all of those tips and works closely with the RCMP. Patterson works out of the police detachment and is paid by the City of Campbell River to work 30 hours a week.
Patterson told the regional district last week that because he’s paid by the city, it makes it difficult for him to travel to outlying areas
to follow up on tips and subsequent criminal investigations.
Patterson and Crime Stoppers director Rob Harris asked the regional district to consider pro-viding some seed money to get a program going within the regional dis-trict.
Harris said the money would go towards put-ting up signs in the smaller communities within the district, such as Gold River, Sayward, and Zeballos, to let peo-ple know the organiza-tion is available, as well as to expand Facebook advertising and provide mail-outs to the commu-nities. Harris said Crime Stoppers would also like to get a tip fund going for other communities. He said that since funds for tips are all raised locally, tip money stays in Campbell River.
The board chose to defer a decision on fund-ing to 015 budget plan-ning.

An 87-year-old Comox man is one of the peo-ple owed money by an auction house in Black Creek.
Karl Ploeger is wait-ing to collect his fee for a lifetime’s worth of tools and some furniture he handed over last summer to Black Creek Auction Mart. However, the land-lord has shut the doors at 857B Reinhold Rd. because the rent hasn’t been paid.
“I didn’t get a penny,” said Ploeger, whose plan-ers, grinders and other tools filled several truck-loads. “We’re looking at a fair amount of money. A lot of things to sell is dif-ficult, I realize that.’’
Sid Nielsen, a partner at the auction, which was managed by Jody Patten, said auctions have come to a halt because of a dis-pute with the landlord.
“We were supposed to have an auction on the 22nd (of November) and there was some sort of dispute with the land-lord (Tom Haglund),” said Nielsen, who mostly works out of town and has a Campbell River phone number, as does Patten.
He said Haglund had either discarded or given away items.
“I don’t know what’s
going on,” Nielsen said. “I had a bunch of trailers there myself. I’ve never drawn a wage from the place.”
Haglund closed the doors mid-November due to “lack of payment” from the tenants.
“I think there was six or seven things they didn’t do. One was to keep the building heated,” Haglund said, adding that he knows of at least two other people owed money from the pro-ceeds of auctions held by the company. Haglund added that there was a “constant stream of peo-ple, but I wasn’t inter-ested in getting involved in that. Anything of any value that was in that building is gone.”
The auction’s con-signment form uses let-terhead from Klass A Auctions in Saskatoon. Certain information on the Black Creek Auction
website duplicates that of the Saskatchewan com-pany.
“There’s no connection to us,” said Tracy Ver-ishine, owner of Klass A Auctions. “We’re the only Klass A, there is no sister or brother com-pany. There’s definitely some miscommunica-tion. Honestly, I don’t appreciate that. That has left a very bad taste
in my mouth. I hope he (Patten) gets it together. I’m not involved in this, and I feel for these people greatly.”
Verishine said Patten trained at an auctioneer school, from where stu-dents were often sent to Klass A to practise.
“That’s how we came to know Jody. He hung out here quite a bit. We kind of mentored him.”
Patten moved to B.C. where he intended to open an auction house called Klass A, which Verishine said he could not do.
“He did open it up as Klass A,” said Verishine, who had obtained an auctioneer’s licence for Patten in March, 2013. She is now in the process of having it revoked.
“I will not change my name because of him,” she said. “I will not allow
him to auction in Sas-katchewan under our registration.”
In a series of voice mails, Patten says the “issues and concerns” are being addressed. In one voice mail, he told the Comox Valley Record that he would be available for an interview Mon-day morning, but then
revoked that offer on the advice of company law-yers.
Ploeger had hoped to make at least $10,000 from his tools. He says he spoke to police, but Comox Valley RCMP did not receive a formal complaint. Police did, however, field two other complaints about Black
Creek Auction Mart.“But it’s not a police
matter because they entered into a contract with the guy,” Const. Don Sinclair said. “They should have put down a price for what they wanted for their stuff. There’s not a lot we can do once they’ve entered into that.”

Terrorism is on the minds of many people these days, given last week’s events in France. Canada is not immune from the challenges posed by terrorists, with ISIS specifically naming Canada as a target last week.
The organization, which holds parts of Iraq and Syria and continues to engage in brutal attacks on innocent people, is under attack by Canada and many other allied nations. It has been threatening Canada for months, with at least one Canadian, John Magu-ire, appearing in ISIS videos and calling for attacks on his countrymen.
Many Canadians felt immune from terrorism until the attacks on Canadian Forces members in Ottawa and Quebec last fall. While the people involved in both of those cases apparently acted on their own, and at least one was suffering from mental illness, the attacks shook many Canadians. An attack on a soldier standing guard at the National War Memorial, and
the lone shooter then get-ting into the Parliament Buildings, was a brazen and chilling moment.
The federal govern-ment is ready and willing to boost surveillance of
potential “radicalized” individuals, and its moves in this area will be supported by a large majority of citi-zens. They want to get back to the “peace and order” that usually characterizes Canada.
Unfortunately, there is no way to guarantee that. The world is a much smaller place, with air travel to almost any place easily available, and social media used extensively to shape and change peoples’ atti-tudes.
Some people suggest that all terrorists are Muslims and feel that the root of the problem is that particular religion. This is a very narrow-minded and wrong-headed approach to take.
The fact is that there are people of many differ-ent ethnic and religious backgrounds who feel they need to take their grievances and explode them on the world stage. Any way that they can be identified early and stopped is useful.

Our View
We say: There is no going back to the old days of peace and order
The battle for Kennewick ManMy Christmas reading
included a fascinating new book called Kennewick Man, a study of skeletal remains dis-covered in 1996 on the bank of the Columbia River in eastern Washington.
He was an ancient hunter buried just south of B.C. almost 9,000 years ago, in the Early Holocene period following the last Ice Age. Among the old-est humans found along the West Coast of North America, he sparked an unprecedented battle by the Smithsonian Insti-tution to examine the skeleton and publish the book late last year.
The most controversial evi-dence came from the skull. It doesn’t match the classic Mongoloid profile of modern aboriginal people, key to the theory that the earliest humans reached North America by land bridge from Siberia to Alaska as glaciers receded.
Smithsonian scientists con-firmed initial reports that Ken-newick Man is a closer match with early Polynesians, and
the Ainu people who remain in Japan today. He lived until about age 40, surviving for years with a stone spear point stuck in his hip.
The authors conclude from chemical analysis that “Kenne-wick Man could not have been a long-time resident of the area where he was found, but instead lived most of his adult life somewhere along the Northwest and North Pacific coast where marine mammals were read-ily available.”
T h i s s u g g e s t s migration by sea, perhaps from a great distance.
The U.S. Army seized the skeleton. The scientists sued and eventually won the right to a brief examination. The court case exposed brutal and illegal actions of the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers and federal departments to destroy the site and intimidate the scientists.
U.S. law demanded all
remains from before European settlement be repatriated for burial by local tribes, without examination.
Umatilla tribe spokesman Armand Minthorn wrote in 1996: “We view this practice
as desecration of the body and a violation of our most deeply-held religious beliefs.
“From our oral histories, we know that our people have been part of this land since the begin-ning of time. We do not believe that our people migrated here from another conti-
nent, as the scientists do.”The head of the Society for
American Archaeology tried to get the researchers to drop their lawsuit, fearing it would interfere with fragile relation-ships with area tribes.
The U.S. Justice Department warned the Smithsonian that lead scientist Douglas Owsley and others might be in criminal conflict of interest as federal
employees suing the govern-ment. Even the White House weighed in against them.
Meanwhile the skeleton was mishandled and later stored in substandard conditions at a Seattle museum, where it remains today. Parts of both femurs were lost, and scientists were falsely accused of taking them. They had been removed by tribal representatives and secretly buried.
Kennewick Man was found as the army was in tense nego-tiations with tribes on salmon fishing rights on the Colum-bia, their demand for removal of dams, and the $100 billion cleanup of the Hanford nuclear site.
The scientists finally won their case in 2004, with a rul-ing that the skeleton is so old there isn’t enough evidence to show it is related to the cur-rent tribes. The judge found the army repeatedly misled the court, and assessed the govern-ment $2.4 million in costs.
The U.S. Army still controls
Every weekend since before Christmas the First Responders have been extremely busy on Saturday and Sunday morning due to drunkenness and bar fights.
Sirens blaze up and down Dogwood from Mid-night 6 am. Sure, there are a few car accidents, fires and heart attacks in those weeks but for the most part, they’re just related to alcohol.
Our First Responders are drained with non-stop calls on the weekends and overworked on top of it. If this continues maybe the new mayor should step up his pledge for a safer Campbell River and hire new firemen/women and paramedics.
If not, when those extra waiting long minutes for a heart attack or serious medical emergency is really needed, someone may die instead of a drunk getting to bed.

How do you feel about having beach access at Ostler Park?
With sections of rip rap along the shore of Ostler Park damaged and col-lapsing because of con-stant wave action and recent major storms, the City is asking whether the community prefers replacing the riprap or establishing a beach stretching nearly 200 metres along part of the park.
Costs for either option would be about the same, and could be fully funded through the Community Works Fund (Federal Gas Tax), rather than through property taxation.
The City is seeking public input through an open house on Jan. 22 and a survey.
The survey will be available online and on paper from Jan. 22 through Jan. 31. Go to w w w.c ampb el l r iver.ca (under What’s New) to complete the survey online. Paper copies will be available at City Hall, the Community Centre and the Sportsplex.
“While either option offers long-term protec-tion from erosion, a nat-ural beach slope would do a better job of man-aging wave energy and minimize the amount of damage and debris clean-up from storms,” says Ross Milnthorp, the City’s general manager of parks, recreation and
culture. Other benefits from
establishing a pocket beach include:n More usable park

One final irony. Anal-ysis shows Kennewick Man ate mostly salmon in his later years, around 6300 BCE. These are the salmon runs wiped out by dams built by U.S. Army engineers before the signing of the Columbia River Treaty with B.C.

When Lorie and Walter bought their home in Port Alberni 13 years ago they slowly began renovating the unfinished basement to accommodate Walter’s changing needs as his muscular dystrophy advanced.
“The basement was a black hole when we moved in,” recalled Walter. “After 12 years of skimping and saving, we made the downstairs completely wheelchair accessible, except for the bathroom. It was way too small. I could only stand for about a minute and a half without collapsing in the shower stall and I could no longer pull myself out of the tub in the upstairs’ bathroom, even with Lorie’s help.”
Through funding from BC Housing’s Home Adaptations for Independence (HAFI) program, Walter and Lorie were able to work with a contractor to transform the space. A wall was removed to make room for a wheel-in shower with benches, grab bars were installed, and the vanity and fixtures were relocated.
I just slide into the shower now,” said Walter. “I feel safer and no longer dread trying to wash myself. What was previously a dangerous chore for me is now a welcome treat.”
Walter and Lorie hope to spend the rest of their lives in their home.
The HAFI program provides financial assistance to help eligible low-income seniors and people with disabilities adapt their homes so they can continue to live independently.

T h e S t r a t h c o n a Regional District is undergoing an audit of its financial statements.
MNP (Meyers Nor-ris Penny) is perform-ing the annual audit – a process expected to last through the next couple of months.
B r a d P i e r c y, a n accountant with MNP, made a presentation to the board at its Jan. 7 meeting to introduce the audit service plan.
“This is basically an outline of the audit responsibilities, your roles as directors and staff,” Piercy said. “We haven’t done the year-end audit yet.”
The audit, which is costing the regional district $29,000 plus administrative fees, dis-bursements and taxes, covers the fiscal year ending Dec. 31, 2014.
Piercy told the regional district board that in the past there haven’t been any issues with the regional district’s audits, but he did say that changes are coming.
The biggest change is in reporting future
accounting.Piercy said for 2015,
the audit will have to take into account any con-taminated sites that may be within the regional district’s borders.
“It is identifying any public lands that the regional district has that might have contamina-tion and whether you will actually be fiscally responsible for cleaning up that contamination,” Piercy said.
“Any (contaminated) property that the Strath-cona Regional District has, there’s going to be some financial payout in the future that is going to be your responsibil-ity – not the province’s, not the federal govern-ment’s, not the city’s.”
Piercy added that other than dealing with liability for contami-nated sites, there have been no other changes affecting the consoli-dated financial state-ments for 2014.
MNP is scheduled to present its audit findings to the board of directors in late April or early May to meet the regional dis-trict’s May deadline for final consolidated finan-cial statements.
Audit begins

It is the heaviest material and so can be the most dif cult to install, but if installed properly and protected from shattering, glass will outlast any other plastic option in terms of useful life. We now have available for purchase the popular Halls Greenhouse. We also provide service and support to set up your house. Halls Greenhouse comes in four ranges, available in many sizes. Whether you’re an absolute beginner, enthusiastic amateur or professional, you are able to extend your growing season, trapping the warmth of the sun and heat to give your seedlings and less hardy plants the best possible protection. For more information look up www.HallsGreenhousesBC.com and please drop in to see our model and catalogue.

It’s only the second week of January, and I’m already slacking off on my New Year’s resolutions. Is there anything I can do, or should I just give up?
Over fty percent of people give up on their New Year’s resolutions in the rst month! That doesn’t mean New Year’s resolutions are bad – just that the goal might need to be rede ned. Perhaps it was too general, or overly optimistic. Goals that are clear and speci c, manageable in terms of time and energy, and are deeply meaningful are more likely to be achieved. At the same time, new behaviors are hard to maintain until they’ve been hardwired in the brain. Don’t let a sense of failure or procrastination get in the way of achieving your dreams. Never, ever give up!Need some help de ning your goals, and achieving them? Registered Clinical Counsellors can help.

Can cold sores caused by the herplex simplex virus be passed on to another person once you are infected?
Yes. To keep from spreading the virus:• Do not have skin-to-skin contact
with young children and people who are immunocompromised.
• Do not share forks, spoons, drinking containers, razors, or towels.
• Wash hands with soap and water.
Take care of a cold sore by:• Keep the cold core clean by gently washing with mild soap
and water.• Putting an ointment on the cold sore should help from
cracking.

Dizziness and FallsFalls and dizziness are common for people over 65 years of age, but falling should not be thought of as a normal thing that happens as we age.
A physical therapist is trained to look at problems with walking and balance and conduct a fall-risk assessment.
Sometimes the problem is an easily treated problem in the inner ear, such as positional vertigo, which comes on with changing head positions. Often there is more than one reason for the symptoms and falls.
A physical therapy consultation will identify the problem areas and develop a personalized treatment plan. Call our Quinsam of ce to arrange for a balance and dizziness assessment and start on the path to better balance today.

Why are some pieces of my scrap gold worth more than others?
That’s an easy one. Gold is measured by karats and weight. 24 karat being pure gold, 18 karat is 18 parts gold and 6 parts alloy, such as copper, nickel, silver or zinc. The bottom of the scale is 9 karat which is 9 parts gold and 15 parts alloy.
The other interesting fact is gold and silver have more grams per ounce than other materials. Gold and silver 31.1g, others 28.3g. That is why we test every piece for karat value and weigh it to determine true value, there is no guessing or “low balling”.
August is always happy to have you stop in to answer any questions or share a shing story.

What can I do to make nancial fresh start in 2015?There is no time like the present for a full nancial review. Ask your Financial Advisor to complete a thorough insurance needs analysis for income replacement due to death, serious injury or illness. Request a comprehensive cash ow analysis, and net worth assessment. These services should be free of charge and available from a dual-licensed Financial Advisor (to avoid con icting concepts), and result in a personal plan to eradicate any debt without increasing your mortgage or adding any “consolidation loans”. Get to know exactly where you are now, how to protect your family’s lifestyle, and get enroute to a solid nancial footing.

Having been a Registered Nurse for many years, it is obvious to the eye, the elderly need good personal care, but with caregivers that really care enough to be there. Come out for an evening full of music and love
in support of Sunday Dennis at the Quadra Island Community Cen-tre on Sunday, Jan. 18 from 6:30-9 p.m.
It will be a lively, energetic, music-filled evening for Sunday and her family - Jason, True, Cyrus and Ishan. Performances will be by Noelle Maffin and friends; Zach Dennison; Smooth Edge, Willow-ishes; and Casey Ryder.
There will be a con-cession with delicious, home made savory and sweet items as well as beverages.
A silent auction will take place during the evening of music. There will also be a noisy
live auction. There is a need of donations for the auctions. If you would like to contribute something, contact Mia Frishholz email [email protected]
The door and conces-sion will be by donation. All proceeds will be going to Sunday Dennis.
Dennis has been diagnosed with a very aggressive brain tumor requiring immediate medical attention and surgery. Based on test results there is a high probability that she has a high grade Gleoma, a fast growing, aggressive form of brain cancer otherwise known as Gleoblastoma.
There are very limited resources in Canada for treating such tumors.
However, she and her family have been pre-sented with an incred-ible opportunity to have treatment in the U.S. and be part of a funded cancer treatment trial at UCLA that offers her the best hope for a posi-tive outcome.
However, in order to access this free trial opportunity she will also need to have her surgery in the U.S. The costs are significant.
“We are asking for everyone and anyones help to get us to UCLA. We need to raise funds to help pay for the cost of surgery, anesthesi-ologist, pre and post op care and hospital fees,” her husband Jason says. “Because of the kind of tumor, the size and the
location, we don’t have time to waste, we have to act quickly. As of today (Monday, January 5th) we have $100,000 and we are now work-ing on getting enrolled and down to UCLA by the end of this next week. But this is just the beginning of the expenses we will be fac-ing. If you have money or anyone that you know has money I am asking for substantial donations to be made for Sundays care.
“This is my wife’s life and the momma or our three children, so I am not afraid to ask. Please help us in any way that you can.
“Know that any con-tributions made will help save Sundays life.”
Former neighbours rally for woman with brain tumour
Sandy Dennis is an active former Quadra Island resident who has been-diagnosed with an aggressive brain tumour requiring immediate medial attention and surgery. A fundraising evening has been organized for Sunday at the Quadra Island Community Centre.

The Campbell River Atom Gladiators, led by head coach Shawn Ericson, and assistant coaches Joe Knight and Trevor Aarts brought home gold from Port McNeill this weekend.
The weekend started off with a late Friday night win of 15-0 win for the Gladiators, that gave spectators a chance see how teamwork and great passing really pays off. Just about everyone on the team had a chance to score a goal in this game.
Saturday morning the Gladiators continued to dominate, with a 5-1 win against Port Hardy. The first period started with a goal from Camp-bell River center, Wyatt Murray.
Next Wyatt Aarts knocked it in off a beau-tiful assist from Landon McLeod. The second period saw right winger Gethin Mayo rush in off a pass from Wyatt Mur-ray to score the third goal of the game. Port Hardy rallied back at the start of the third period, but not for long, as for-ward Landon MacLeod received an assist from Nathan Handyside to bring the score to 4-1. Defenseman Nathan Handyside wrapped the game up with a 5th goal to see the Gladiators to their second win of the tournament.
Next in the Gladiators’ sights was Port Alice, who fought hard, but couldn’t hang on in a 13-3 win for the Gladi-ators. The Gladiators stormed out of the gate in the first period with
a series of goals by their flying forwards. Wyatt Murray scored two goals , Wyatt Aarts ham-mered out a hat-trick and Landon MacLeod tucked two goals in the net. Matthew San-chez opened the second period with an early goal. This was answered back by a quick goal from Port Alice’s Dawson Twamley. With skillful passes from speedy forwards Joel Idiens and Riley Kilpat-rick , Wyatt Murray got one back for the Gladi-ators, followed by goals by Sanchez, Handyside
and two more from Mur-ray! And it was off to the Finals against Nanaimo.
The final game against Nanaimo cal led on thestrong skills of the Gladiator’s defensive line, as defensemen Colton Knight, Ryder Ericson, Jonus Reid, and Nathan Handyside had to bring their “A” game, as Nanaimo put up a good fight. Thanks to the amazing work of the defense and the impenetrable Gladia-tor goalie, Andrew Bil-lard, our forwards could concentrate on the task
at hand. Wyatt Murray started things up with a goal early in the first. Nanaimo answered back with one goal scored by Nate Hughes.
Gladiators had to fight hard through the first period, but Mur-ray sent a message with one minute left, bring-ing the score to 2-1. The second period saw some of the closest and most exciting action of the tournament, with the Gladiators’ Murray scor-ing two more goals, and Nanaimo’s Reid Scott with one, bringing the
score at the end of the second to 4-2. Nanaimo opened the third period with an early goal by Nate Hughes, answered back a minute later by a goal by Gladiator Mat-thew Sanchez, assisted by teammate Murray. Wyatt Murray wrapped the game up with a final goal, as the Gladiators won gold in the 6-3 final.
Goalie Andrew Billard played an exceptional tournament and his teammates made sure he knew it as they rushed to give him pats and cel-ebrate their win.

Award-winning singer-song-writer Fred
Eaglesmith fuses rock ‘n’ roll edge and stand-up comic wit into per-formances he likes to characterize as “Johnny Carson meets the Roll-ing Stones.”
And now, he’s bring-ing his well-honed show to theatres across North America, includ-ing Campbell River’s Tidemark Theatre on Feb. 25.
Eaglesmith, it should be noted, is equally adept at provoking laughter and tears, which speaks to his skill at conveying the complexities of human experience. Though he’s a rocker as much as a singer-songwriter, don’t let his playing chops fool you. He’s about crafting songs — songs that get to the heart of any matter, and can resonate with both fel-low songwriters and the barstool-perching legionnaires at the far-flung posts he’s also taken to playing.
Tom Waits singled out an Eaglesmith song, “Your Sister Cried,” when asked to recall the last time a piece of music had moved him to tears. (“It just tore me up,” Waits said of the song’s lyrics.)
Eaglesmith has always been an independent explorer, seeking new ways to challenge himself and engage fans, musically and otherwise. Trundling his band from stage to stage in a vegetable-
oil-powered converted school bus, he recently broke new ground with his “Legions of Legions” tour of Canadian legion halls. Expanding into theatres is another new direction for this club and festival favourite.
From his mid-show pie auctions to fund Operation Smile surger-ies for children to his Annual Fred Eaglesmith Charity Picnic, which has grown into a three-day, family-friendly event benefiting a dif-ferent cause each year, he’s certainly proven that he knows how to entertain. In fact, an entire theatrical pro-
duction, “Dear Johnny Deere,” was crafted from Eaglesmith’s songs; the musical debuted in 2012 to critical acclaim which included a four out of four star review in the Toronto Star which called the production a “winner.”
Eaglesmith’s genre-spanning songs have been recorded by art-ists including Miranda Lambert, Cowboy Junkies, Todd Snider, Alan Jackson and Toby Keith (in 2003, several others contributed to The Songs of Fred Eaglesmith: A Tribute). Tambourine and his other recent releases, 6
Volt and Cha Cha Cha, are filled with songs that also stick with listeners long after the last note, sometimes grooving and haunting simulta-neously. Inspired by the era when cars had five-button AM radios and
stations played Blonde on Blonde tracks next to “96 Tears,” Tambourine’s tremoloed guitar licks and sha-la-la harmonies evoke rock’s golden age while remaining true to Eaglesmith’s timeless muse — the same muse that drives him to paint, and to use those paint-ings to fund his albums.
Yeah, some people might just try to relax between their 200 gigs a year, or at least let somebody else do the bus driving and repair work. Not Fred Eagle-smith, whose creativity and dedication refuse to go on vacation. But one thing’s sure; he’ll never die of boredom. And neither will his fans.
The Tidemark Theatre and Vancouver Island MusicFest proudly pres-ent Fred Eaglesmith at the Tidemark Theatre on Feb. 25. Tickets are $32 plus applicable taxes & fees and can be pur-chased at the Tidemark Box Office from Tues-day – Saturday between 12 and 4 p.m. Tickets are also available online from www.islandmu-sicfest.com and www.tidemarktheatre.com.
