“It’s a kick to the gut with a steel-toed boot.”

That’s how business owner Connie Cawley

describes a letter she recently received from the city.

She and her husband Dwaine have been served notice that a sign adver-tising their business, D

& T Rebuilders, must be taken down and non-compliance may result in fines and/or impound-ment of their sign.

The sign is one of four along Highway 19 near the corner of Barge Ter-minal Road, across from Duncan Bay Road.

Cawley said her sign, as well as signs for ABC Recycling, Flurer Smokery and Schnitzer Steel Corporation serve as guides to direct cus-tomers to their facilities which are located off the highway.

Kelly Flurer, who owns Flurer Smokery with her husband Brian, said they have the misfortune of being on a street called Menzies Way, which cus-tomers often mistake for Menzies Bay.

“Everybody goes to Menzies Bay and they can’t find it and they say ‘to heck with it and they leave.’ There’s no cell phone reception up here so they can’t call us. We’ve lost a lot of busi-ness because of it,” Flurer says. “People need to be able to find us.”

Dave Miller, the gen-eral manager of ABC Recycling which is located at the bottom of

Barge Terminal Road, has the same problem with customers passing by the street.

“We need to have sig-nage to operate our busi-ness,” Miller says.

But now the city wants the signs removed. City Clerk Peter Wipper says the reason is two-fold.

“We received a com-plaint about the signs and we followed up and found none of the signs have permits from the Ministry of Transporta-tion and Infrastructure,” Wipper says. “Con-

nie had a permit but it expired.”

The Ministry of Trans-portation and Infrastruc-ture did not respond to a request for comment before the Mirror went to press.

“But the main reason is, you can’t have a sign advertising your business off your property and certainly you can’t have a sign with an arrow point up the street to your property,” Wipper says.

The city’s sign bylaw specifically prohibits off-premise signs which are

defined in the bylaw as “a sign that directs attention to a business, commod-ity, service, entertain-ment or thing not related to or located on the par-cel on which the sign is located.”

There is an exemption in the bylaw that allows for off premise signs and that is if they are direc-tional signs. But Wipper said a directional sign does not mean a sign with an arrow pointing towards a business.

A directional sign is defined by the city as sig-

nage that gives instruc-tions. Wipper gave the example of a drive-thru sign which directs traffic towards the order board.

But Cawley disagrees and doesn’t understand why the city is picking on these businesses after all these years.

“Our sign has been there for 20 years,” Caw-ley says. “It’s just the weirdest thing. Suddenly after this many years there’s an issue in having the sign there.”

Cawley also figures it’s the province who should have jurisdiction over the signs since it’s on a high-way right of way.

“The city is just playing big bully on the block. It’s become a bullying issue,” Cawley says. “There’s no reason why those signs need to come down, it’s a heavy industrial area miles out of town.”

But Wipper says the city has a right to ask that the signs be taken down because they’re not legal – they don’t have a per-mit and as off premise signs they are prohibited signs in the city of Camp-bell River.

Cawley, and the other four businesses, have until July 18 to remove their signs but they won’t go down that easily.

Cawley plans to pres-ent her case at the July 8 council meeting, sup-ported by the other busi-nesses.

A group of art enthu-siasts has a vision of brightening up Campbell River hospital.

Ken Blackburn, a pro-

gram co-ordinator at the museum, told council that a newly formed art group is looking at add-ing artwork to the hospi-tal entrances, the waiting area, the hallways, eleva-tors and stairwells.

Blackburn said adding colour to the hospital’s plain walls sends a mes-sage of healing and sup-port.

“S e ve r a l h o s pi t a l departments are on board with the proposal

as well as the site direc-tor for the hospital,” Blackburn said during a presentation at the June 24 city council meeting. “As far as subject matter, it affects everybody in the community and it’s a

subject we can all relate to.”

Blackburn said the hospital art group is con-sidering framed art and decal art to wrap around the walls about a quarter of the way up from the

ground.“The level takes into

account people in wheel-chairs or on gurneys,” Blackburn said. “It’s bet-ter to have the art down at the level of the bed.”

Ross Milnthorp, the

city’s general manager of parks, recreation and culture, said the city’s Community Services, Recreation and Culture Commission supports the initiative.

“ The commiss ion believes that the instal-lation of art in medi-cal facilities such as the Campbell River hospi-tal has a positive thera-peutic value, will make a positive contribution to staff morale and will significantly improve the hospital environment for patients, visitors and staff,” Milnthorp wrote in a report to council.

City council also sup-ports the idea and voted to forward the hospi-tal art proposal to the new public art commit-tee to consider once the committee is formed within the next couple of months.

If approved, Black-burn said the hospital art group wants to begin putting art in the existing hospital as a trial run.

“One of the reasons we are wanting to get on this now is that so when the new hospital is com-ing online we’ve already got a set of experiments and know what works and what doesn’t,” Black-burn said. “We’ll need to experiment with it. It’s not something you’ll get right the first time.”

Blackburn said the group also plans to use colour schemes as a way of identifying the differ-ent wards and hospital departments.

The RCMP will no lon-ger handle calls made to 911 as the North Island 911 Corporation has opted to go with a new service provider.

The move will save more than $1 million over the next few years.

North Island 911 chose to not renew its contract with the RCMP for call answering services after the Mounties increased their costs by more than $250,000 per year.

Coun. Larry Samson announced at the Strath-cona Regional District table Thursday that 911 Corporation has hired E-Comm to handle emergency calls in order to save on costs.

“We feel that it is a good contract,” Samson said. “It gives us state-of-the-art technology and at the same time saves North Island 911 Corpo-ration $1.7 million over five years.”

While a new provider

will answer 911 calls and then direct them to either fire, police, or ambulance, emergency calls for fire-related emergencies will still be dispatched by the Camp-bell River Fire Depart-ment which works as the fire dispatcher for 49 dif-ferent fire departments across the Island in six regional districts.

North Is land 911 Corporation followed advice from consulting firm Pomax in selecting a new dispatch model after the RCMP advised that emergency call ser-vices are not a part of the force’s core service and as a result, the price would be going up.

Jon Ambler, president of North Island 911, said the board did not take the decision lightly and ultimately decided it was incumbent upon the organization to take the opportunity to save taxpayers money without compromising service.

“This is probably the most profound deci-

sion this board will ever make,” Ambler said in a news release. “This is an operational busi-ness and in some cases the operations involve life or death. E-Comm has proven strength in primary call answer-ing service for 911, and Campbell River fire department has proven strength in fire dispatch. Both organizations are operationally ready, right now, to provide these vital services for our citi-zens and visitors.”

The cost of the new 911 answering service will be $2 million over five years. Samson said E-Comm is expected to take over on October 21, but that date is dependent on Telus.

“If Telus can’t provide by that time, it will be early in the new year,” Samson said.

The agreement with E-Comm is good for five years and will cover ser-vice in the Comox Valley, Strathcona (Campbell River area), Mt. Wad-dington (North Island),

and Alberni-Clayoquot regional districts, as well as a portion of the Nanaimo Regional Dis-trict and the Powell River Regional District.

E-Comm currently provides 911 service to the Metro Vancou-ver region, Sunshine Coast Regional District, Whistler, Squamish, and the south portion of the Squamish-Lillooet Regional District.

E-Comm’s standard is to answer at least 95 per cent of calls within five seconds of the call being received at the call answer centre.

Canada Day is the perfect opportunity to consider all the good reasons why living in Canada and being a Canadian is so terrifi c. One you may not have considered is that Canada is a great place to retire! A comfortable retirement is something we too often take for granted but when you look at the benefi ts available to Canadian retirees – benefi ts not available to retirees in other countries – it’s clear that Canada rocks retirement, here’s some reasons why:• All wage earning and self-employed Canadians are eligible to receive either Canada Pension Plan or the Québec Pension Plan (CPP/QPP) retirement benefi ts, which are indexed for infl ation. A couple can choose to share CPP/QPP benefi ts for tax purposes.• Those who have lived in Canada for at least 40 years after age 18 will receive the full monthly Old Age Security (OAS) benefi t, which is indexed for infl ation. Canadian residents who have lived in Canada for at least 10 years after age 18

will receive a prorated OAS monthly payment.• Seniors with a lower income may be eligible for the Guaranteed Income Supplement (GIS), a tax-free monthly payment, which is indexed for infl ation.• Every tax-eligible Canadian gets the Basic Personal Tax Credit and those over age 65 also receive an Age Credit. Other tax credits that can benefi t retirees include the Medical Expense Credit, the Dependent Credit, the Disability Credit, and the Caregivers Credit. There are also generous tax credits for those making charitable donations.• Canadians can take advantage of the tax-deferred, compound growth benefi ts of investments in Registered Retirement Savings Plans (RRSPs). • Any Canadian resident who receives periodic payments from a registered pension plan can potentially reduce their taxes by splitting pension income with a spouse/common-law partner. • Those over age 65 who receive Registered Retirement Income Fund (RRIF) income are also

eligible for the federal and provincial Pension Income Credit and can allocate up to 50% of their RRIF income to a spouse for tax purposes.• Canadians can invest in Tax-free Savings Accounts (TFSAs) that generate tax-free investment income that does not affect income-tested federal benefi ts.• And, of course, Canadian retirees have access to a wide range of health care services at little or no direct cost. Canada is a great place to retire! But to make your retirement all it can be, you need a plan that includes retirement income from other sources such as your company or personal pension plan and your own investments. Your professional advisor can help make sure you have everything in place for a great retirement in a great country.

Council needs more information before mak-ing a decision on leasing land for a sobering centre for the homeless.

Campbell River Fam-ily Services wants to open a sobering assess-ment and drop-in centre on the same lot recently vacated by the temporary extreme weather shelter.

Paul Mason, a program co-ordinator with Family Services, said the idea for the centre was prompted by the success of the

former shelter, but the sobering centre will be a different venue.

“A sobering centre is completely different from a shelter,” Mason said. “It’s not a shelter where they stay over-night. They are assessed, put in to an interim bed until they’re fit to go into the shelter at Evergreen. This facility will be open 24/7, 365 days a year and provide a valuable link between the homeless and community service providers. We will have a nurse on staff to work with clients.”

Mason said the cen-tre will likely have six to eight beds to accom-modate clients who are brought in in the middle of their addiction.

The centre will serve as a place for the clients to sober up and receive treatment before being transferred by centre staff to the Salvation Army’s Evergreen Shelter which requires clients to be clean and sober.

While council was sup-portive of the project, councillors wanted more information on specific details such as building

codes, water and sewer hook-up and electricity generation.

“I’m absolutely 100 per cent in favour of a sober-ing centre,” Coun. Claire Moglove said. “It’s a key component of the crime reduction strategy, but before I feel comfortable as a councillor I need to hear from staff before going ahead. I really want to be careful.”

Council voted to refer the project to city staff for a report on logistics and other possible loca-tions for the sobering centre.

Family Services’ first choice is the lot on Dogwood Street next to the downtown fire hall where the extreme weather shelter had suc-cess while in operation November 1-April 30.

Coun. Ryan Mennie praised Mason for his efforts in getting the winter shelter off the ground, but questioned whether the neighbour-hood would embrace a more permanent facility.

“I want to congratu-late you on your work,” Mennie said via Skype from his new home in

Alberta. “The (extreme weather shelter) was an overnight thing. It didn’t have any impact on the neighbourhood. Can you say how a 24/7 operation won’t have any impact on the neighbourhood?”

Mason doesn’t foresee there being problems.

“What we have will be enclosed,” Mason said. “I think a facility like this, available to the homeless – they will use it respect-fully as they showed with the extreme weather shelter. They take care of it when there’s a sense of ownership.”

The sobering centre is expected to have a First Nations healing room, a quiet room, a place for counselling and an area for the clients to socialize and have a cup of coffee.

School District 72 has offered an unused porta-ble to serve as the sober-ing centre, which will be enclosed and landscaped to make it aesthetically pleasing. Mason is look-ing for the city to approve a three- to five-year lease for the sobering centre.

City staff is expected to report back to council later this month.

Few can argue that mental illness touches everyone. There are, of course, those with the diagnosis. Then

there are their children, siblings, parents, friends and co-workers.

Even complete strangers are often hit with the ripples, as society is forced to bear the burden of missed work days, medical visits, inadequate treatment options, etc.

It doesn’t matter that research has led to many strategies and treatments that,

when adhered to, can help sufferers live productive, even normal, lives.

Perhaps if it felt easier to talk openly about mental illness, things would be different.

For those directly affected, it can feel simpler to try to ignore the reality – to keep the door closed and the windows shuttered, so to speak. Not the healthiest approach, really, but common nonetheless.

And while time has led to strides in the realm of mental illness, it has done less for society’s acceptance of it as a disease.

Many worthwhile stories do not get told in these pages because of the stigma attached to mental illness; the fear people have of being branded by going public with their struggle.

Mental illness are still two words that, despite so-called progress, few afflicted with the likes of depression or schizophrenia or paranoia dare to mutter outside – sometimes even inside – their immediate family.

Many of these individuals are parents, siblings, friends or colleagues of those living with a mental illness.

A few are those individuals themselves, who have taken that brave step into the spotlight.

No one should feel the need to hide something they cannot control.

The reality is, many of us share the blame for the fact so many people do.

We say: No-one should fear coming forward for help

I am so fed up with our provincial government’s unrea-sonable stance with respect to the B.C. teachers’ strike.  I wish that the government could step back and see what’s at stake here: our children, our country’s most precious resource.

Last night, I attended our grandson’s Grade 12 gradua-tion. I cannot tell you how much I appreciate the devotion and care he’s received from teachers at his school, Carihi, in Campbell River. His teachers have struggled to give him and every other student they teach the kind of education chil-dren deserve. They struggle because they are overworked and underpaid.

Education is in crisis. Teachers are expected to do more every year with less and less resources, and with less and less security.

In this province, every teacher has to deal on a daily basis with children who come to them from broken homes, with learning disabilities, and a whole range of I.Q.’s. Throw in some special needs kids into the mix, and you have bedlam.

In a classroom of twenty-five and more, if even one child is having a bad day, he can disrupt the learning experi-ence of all. And yet, we expect the teacher to manage

Life after Supreme Court’s Tsilhqot’in decisionThe Supreme Court of Canada’s land-

mark decision on aboriginal title held by the Tsilhqot’in Nation leaves many ques-tions to be answered.

Perhaps the biggest is this: Will Brit-ish Columbia exist as we know it today by the end of this century? Or will it devolve into dozens of semi-autono-mous regions, through treaties or simi-lar court actions, as the only Canadian province that never completed historic treaties?

The Tsilhqot’in decision appears to uphold the key finding of the 2007 trial, that 1,700 square kilometres of the Nemiah Valley west of Williams Lake are essentially owned by the people who occupied it hundreds if not thousands of years ago.

It’s not quite ownership. Federal and

provincial jurisdiction still applies, and their authority varies with the strength of the aboriginal title claim.

Chief Justice Beverley McLachlin ruled that the province overstepped its authority by issuing logging permits in the valley in 1983. McLachlin noted that lawyers for B.C. first argued that the logging was to control mountain pine beetle, then dropped that argument in its first appeal. She also upheld the deci-sion of the trial judge, one-time NDP leadership contender David Vickers, who rejected B.C.’s position that the eco-nomic value of the timber to the prov-ince overrode the then-vaguely defined aboriginal title.

Here’s McLachlin’s definition:“The nature of aboriginal title is that

it confers on the group that holds it the

exclusive right to decide how land is used and the right to benefit from those uses, subject to the restriction that the uses must be consistent with the group nature of the interest and the enjoyment of the land by future generations.”

That’s not land ownership in the fee-simple sense of the term. It locks in com-munal ownership, which I and many others have argued is at the root of the poverty seen in many aboriginal com-munities.

Another big question: Is there any future for B.C.’s 20-year-old treaty pro-cess, or will this precedent-setting case send more First Nations to court, or to the barricades as the Tsilhqot’in did on a logging road in 1983?

One of the unique advantages that have emerged from the handful of mod-

ern treaties in B.C. is that aboriginal communities have more options in land ownership. By voluntary agreement, they can convert land to fee-simple own-ership, making it available for mortgage or sale. Modern treaty holders also get out from under the federal Indian Act, which remains in force despite this lat-est decision.

One of the big questions asked in the days after the Tsilhqot’in decision was this: Is the Northern Gateway pipeline project dead?

None of the aboriginal communities along the pipeline route has this kind of declared aboriginal title. Few if any would have a similar strength of claim as the Tsilhqot’in, who fought a small war to defend their territory from a wave of

gold seekers in the 1860s.One that does is the Haida Nation, whose occupa-

tion of a beautiful group of islands was long defended militarily, and never challenged by any other aborigi-nal group.

Among others, the Haida Nation was represented in the Tsilhqot’in case as interveners. Council of the Haida Nation president Peter Lantin said after the decision that his team is preparing its own aboriginal title case for trial.

Few doubt that this assertion of title will be success-ful, either by negotiation or court ruling. But there is a unique aspect to the Haida claim that would set another precedent.

They claim title to the ocean around Haida Gwaii, a challenge to anyone wishing to sail tankers through.

without adequate sup-port through teaching assistants and other sup-portive personnel. At the end of the day, we have a teacher who is stressed to the max and students who don’t get the educa-tion they deserve.

Some of the public is swayed by government arguments that teachers are being greedy in ask-

ing for more salary and steady contracts. Teach-ers earn every penny. Ask any mother of even just two, how she copes for the day. It’s not easy. And yet we ask teachers to handle twenty-five and more individuals with unique needs every day and teach them something as well.

And contrary to some popular belief, teach-

ers do not work regu-lar hours and have long vacations. They often put in long hours after the children have gone home marking papers, prepar-ing for class instruction, or providing extracur-ricular support for their students.

When they are off on some well-earned vaca-tion time, they also use this time to take more

courses, and plan for the upcoming year.

The other bone of con-tention for teachers is classroom size. Teachers are asked to handle class-rooms of 24 children in the early primary grades and after that, there is no limit. Can you believe it, no limit? If Christie Clark sat in on one of these classrooms, she’d be whistling a different

tune. As far as I’m con-

cerned, teachers are saints. They are deal-ing with our most pre-cious resource and they deserve to be well-paid, well-supported with teaching assistants, and respected for what they do. Without them, we have a sorry tomorrow.

With Saturday’s amal-gamation and sewer ref-erendum now over, the Area D Residents and Ratepayers’ Association is moving on.

Rod Nugent, presi-dent of the association, said the vote closes the door on a decade of uncertainty over sewers in the northern region

of Area D. Nugent said the ratepayers’ group chose to stay impartial throughout the process in order to provide vot-ers with the information they needed to make an informed decision.

“ADRRA’s sole role has been to separate the facts from the politics so that each affected person

can make a clear choice based on true informa-tion,” Nugent said. “I am looking forward to a time when Area D resi-dents can work together in harmony and unite in the common cause of making our community a better place to live.”

T h e a s s o c i at i on’s next general meeting is

tomorrow at 7 p.m. at Oyster Bay Resort (4357 S. Island Highway).

At the top of the list of issues for discussion is member feedback from two opinion surveys recently circulated to its members, said ratepay-ers’ association chair Bob Solc.

Nugent said the associ-

ation recently discovered that Area D water rates are calculated differently from most other munici-palities and electoral areas.

“The Area D water sys-tem (is) calculated based on your house value rather than how much water you use,” Nugent said.

That wasn’t a student picket line in front of Sandowne Elementary School on Thursday afternoon.

The students were holding a large sign, but it wasn’t about the teachers’ strike.

Rather, they were happy celebrating with a big $5,000 cheque.

“I’ve never seen so much money before,” said a wide-eyed stu-dent.

Sandowne students and Rob Hatfield, a vice-principal and teacher at the school, were one of 16 winners across the country of of the Inspired Minds Learn-ing Project sponsored by the Canadian Scholar-ship Trust Foundation.

“This is great for the kids,” said Hatfield who

accepted the cheque on behalf of the school.

The national competi-tion challenged commu-nities and organizations to submit new and inno-vative ideas that help advance the growth and development of children up to age 10.

Hatfield’s idea was to take literacy to the next level by teaching students how to publish their stories digitally.

Using a green screen along with a couple of iPads, the students film themselves reading or acting out stories in front of the screens.

With the $5,000 prize money, Hatfield will be able to purchase iPads, additional green screens and other equipment to help the students to express themselves

creatively and continue fuelling their develop-ment.

“Your Green Screen for Learning submis-sion had 1,757 votes in the final voting round and it was clear that whole community was involved in build-ing awareness for the project,” said Heather Zapotoczny, who pre-sented the cheque on behalf of the Canadian

Scholarship Trust Plan. “We were extremely impressed by your idea and can’t wait to see how these funds enhance the literacy program at San-downe.”

The Canadian Schol-arship Trust Foundation is a non-profit orga-nization that has been helping families save for post-secondary educa-tion for more than 50 years.

City to share resources with Comox Valley

The City of Campbell

River Fire Department has signed onto an agreement to share resources with the Comox Valley and support the air force base in Comox in the event of an emergency.

Members of the 19 Wing Fire Hall hosted several civic leaders and fire department representatives May 26 for a signing ceremony to seal an agreement for reciprocal fire and rescue services within

the Comox Valley and Campbell River regions.

Eleven fire departments are part of the regional agreement to provide emergency services by pooling common and specialized emergency resources when needed.

“Through this agreement, fire departments within our region aim to share skills and specialized equipment as we work together to improve emergency services that save lives, protect property and preserve the environment,” says Fire Chief Ian Baikie.

PATTERSON,MICHAEL WALKER

1971-2014With great sadness we announce the sudden passing of our beloved Mike - son, husband, father, brother and friend. Mike was much loved by many and known for his soft heart, kind acts and wicked sense of humour.

He is mourned by his wife Tricia, son Dylan, parents Dick and Dianne Patterson, grandmother Virginia Patterson, brother Chris (Christel), and sisters Barbara and Casey. Mike is also mourned by his parents-in-law George and Wendy Banning, brothers-

in-law Wade (Kathy) and Mark; many nieces, nephews, uncles, aunts, cousins and a host of special friends.

Born in Prince George, Mike spent his early years in Kingston, Ontario before the family moved to Campbell River where he attended school. He graduated from Brentwood College, Mill Bay.

Mike worked in the Aquaculture industry for many years. This is where he met and married the love of his life Tricia in 1998. Their precious son, Dylan was born in 2003.

Mike was a respected journeyman plumber and an avid Tyee Fisherman. He will be remembered most of all for his desire to help others. We will miss you, dear Michael “FISH ON”.

A memorial service of celebration and thankfulness of Mike’s life will take place on Saturday, July 5th at 2:00pm at Trinity Presbyterian Church, 145 Simms Road, Campbell River.

In lieu of flowers, please do a kind act for someone and hug your loved ones.

Clara passed away peacefully June 25, 2014 at the Campbell River Hospital. Predeceased by her husband John Boby, her parents John and Jenny Parkins from Ottawa, Ontario, her brother John Parkins and sister Joan Henderson from Ottawa.

She is survived by her sister Jenny Anderson from Reno, Nevada, by her 5 children; John, David, Peter (Heather), Nancy (Ken), and Wendy (Wade), seven grandchildren; Aaron, Jennifer, Darcy,

Carissa, Kelsie, Melissa and Clinton, and 4 great-grandchildren; Ryder, Coen, Jayden and Keegan.

Clara had very fond memories of her childhood in Ottawa and their “Air Force days.” She and John retired from the RCAF to Campbell River in 1964, where they raised their five children.

Mom loved her family deeply. She loved to sing, shop and work in her garden.

The family would like to express their gratitude to the caring staff at Golden Grove, where Mom spent the last 4 years – not only for their exceptional care, but for their friendship.

We would also like to thank the nurses on 3rd floor N for their compassion and care this past month. You were all amazing…especially “John and Natale” – thanks so much.

We will be having a Celebration of Life for Mom on Saturday, July 5th at 2pm. A “Tea in the Garden” at Nancy’s house, 1868 Carlyle Crescent.

C a mp b e l l R i v e r ’s chief referee of hockey thought she was just going to another annual general meeting to hear what’s new.

Instead, Jacqui Har-rison got a big surprise when BC Hockey hon-oured her work in help-ing develop young ref-erees at the 95th annual awards banquet.

“It was a surprise…I was very humbled and excited,” said Harrison.

The 33-year-old will also celebrate her 20th season of officiating this fall when she returns as the referee in chief – her fourth year – for the Campbell River Minor Hockey Association.

According to B C Hockey, Harrison is respected for her “fair and honest approach” as well as her dedication

and work ethic in men-toring young officials. In presenting the Develop-ment Award, BC Hockey wrote:

“What sets (Harrison) apart from many other volunteers is her selfless dedication to the offi-ciating side of the sport of hockey. She works

extremely hard to ensure all referees are mentored throughout the season and she is always there to answer questions or solve problems.”

Harrison has referred at numerous levels and at tournaments, and was an official at the 2013 Women’s Esso Cup.

The BC Hockey AGM was held in Penticton June 21 and Harrison goes each year to attend the referees’ seminar to learn what’s new and to bring that knowledge back to her fellow offi-cials.

This year BC Hockey made sure she was coming because they had something special planned. Harrison didn’t know about the award until, “The cat was let out of the bag at the ref ’s seminar!” she said with a laugh.

In her speech at the b a n qu e t , Ha r r i s on thanked the Campbell River hockey associa-tion, the many refs who mentored her and the officials now under her charge.

In addition to her duties as chief ref, Har-rison is the mom to two kids, Dylan and Shelby, who both play hockey.

Kaiya McPay made an extraordinary showing at the BC Powerlifting Association’s competi-tion in Vancouver, bring-ing home the gold medal and smashing records along the way.

McPay trains and coaches out of Campbell River’s Crossfit O’Twelve gym. Powerlifting is an intense sport testing both physical and psychologi-cal strength.

While there are  obvi-ous requirements of great strength, precision and technique, it is the over-all ironwill  and  correct tactical decisions which are necessary in order to mount the winners’ podium.

T h e r e a r e t h r e e attempts in each of the disciplines, the best lift in each discipline is added together to arrive at a lifter’s total for the com-petition, they are then ranked.

McPay hit two of the three back squats suc-cessfully.

“I missed depth on my second lift due to a slight wardrobe malfunction, but went into the back and with the support of my coach, Phil Howe, got my head back in the meet,” she said. “After sorting out my singlet, I went back in, squat-ting full depth and then some!”

McPay came in just five

kilograms short of a pro-vincial record, finishing with 115 kilos.

McPay crushed the pre-vious bench press record of 72.5 kilos,  lifting 86 kilos.

She cont inued to smash records by beat-ing the old deadlift stan-dard by 17 kilos, lifting 142.5 kilos. In the final count,  her total weight raised was 343.5 kilos, beating the old provin-cial record of 305 kilos.

McPay is looking for-ward to training for the next meet, and has some serious goals in sight which include qualifying for the National Power-lifting Competition in the spring of 2015.

BC Hockey honours head ref

Campbell River’s chief ref of hockey, Jacqui Harrison (centre), is congratulated for her dedi-cation to mentoring young officials.

Records smashed as powerlifter hoists gold

Kaiya McPay’s hard work pays off at the provincials as she survived a “wardrobe malfunction” and then came back to successfully lift two of three squats.

This year’s event features 14 Campbell River gardens, including six that are new to the event.

Visitors will be able to see artists at work in the gardens on tour days.

The tour is a unique opportunity to explore a diverse mix of gardens, including several with unique artistic features and another with pil-lows made of flowers: a mingling of fresh creations and mature designs.

There will also be an opportunity to chat and exchange tips with the gardeners, while observ-ing artists hard at work.

The Campbell River Garden and Art Tour is sponsored by Royal LePage Advance Realty Campbell River and raises funds for chil-dren’s art programs.

The tour takes place from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. on Saturday, July 5 and Sunday, July 6.

Tickets are $16 and are available at the Camp-bell River Art Gallery, the Visitor Information Centre, the Willows Farm Market & Garden Centre, and the Comox Valley Art Gallery.

This ticket includes garden descriptions, a map, and lunch dis-counts of 15 per cent at the Royal Coachman Pub and Boston Pizza.

If you’d like a ride to the gardens, join the City’s Parks, Recreation and Culture Department van tour.

Call the Community Centre at 250-286-1161 to find out more. Van tour tickets are available at the Community Cen-tre only.

For more information, visit the Campbell River Art Gallery at 1235 Shoppers Row (across from the Tidemark The-atre) or call 250-287-2261.

Art and gardening merge this weekend Cross your fingers kids and hope for a nice eve-ning next Wednesday.

That’s when the Sunset Cinema returns to Camp-bell River for a movie under the stars, sponsored by the Coastal Community Credit Union.

There won’t be a bad seat in the house at Willow Point Park on July 9 as the computer animated hit

The Lego Movie will be shown on a massive, three-storey-high inflatable screen.

Showtime is at dark, and moviegoers are encour-aged to bring a blanket or lawn chair and claim a spot early.

The movies are free to attend, but if you happen to indulge at Sunset Cinema’s concession stand, your money will help support Coastal Commu-nity’s Young Entrepreneur Program.

Young Entrepreneurs is an educational, school-based program designed to help students explore the world of business, while developing valuable life and financial skills.

Also making an appearance at all five events are the Nanaimo Science and Sustainability Society’s interactive science activities – think science experi-ments using building blocks and dry ice.

There’s also the chance to win prizes through Coastal Community’s social media sites during Sunset Cinema.

Helping to ensure that Sunset Cinema runs smoothly is a team of dedicated Coastal Commu-nity employee volunteers.

Tilli Kimler from the Comox branch has been volunteering at Sunset Cinema since it started five years ago. Jack Oja’s waterfront garden is always a highlight of the annual Campbell River Art Gallery Gar-

den and Art Tour.

We live in the same town. We brave the same storms, worry about the same trees and thought our washing machine would be okay while we were out. We know the place you live in and the people you share it with, so we’ll make sure you’ll always be looked after.

We know you because we’ve been there too.
