Mayor Walter Jakeway served noticed at Tuesday’s council meeting that a group of citizens may legally challenge Coun. Ryan Mennie fin-ishing out his council term from Alberta.

Jakeway said a group of concerned residents may be advancing the chal-lenge.

“There may be a legal challenge for the whole arrangement of the remote situation that we have tonight as we’re heading into the future,” Jake-way said. “Everybody should be on notice we may have a legal challenge in the future.”

Mennie participated in Tuesday’s council meeting via Skype. Mennie said he Skyped with his iPad and fol-lowed along with the live broadcast of the meeting on the city’s website using his laptop.

“The Skype session worked very well for me,” Mennie said. “Other than my larger than life presence on the screen, it was like I was in the room and had no problem hearing or participating in the discussion.”

He said that following the regular council meeting, he also participated in the in-camera session of the meet-ing by phone in the committee room.


Area D residents will finally head to the polls tomor-row.

A total of 535 property owners will be asked whether or not they wish to join the city of Campbell River in order to receive city sewer service.

The issue has been ongoing for two years, since the city first proposed amalgamation with northern Area

D in order to get those properties off septic systems.Brenda Leigh, Strathcona Regional District direc-

tor for Area D, said she is expecting a good number of people will turn out to vote.

“By all reports, the two advance polls have been well-run and I trust we can look forward to a big turnout on Saturday, June 28 at Ocean Grove School,” Leigh said. “I have the utmost respect for the intelligence of the people in Area D and I trust that they will take this vote

During the council meeting, Mennie’s image was projected on coun-cil’s overhead screen. During presentations from the public, Mennie’s profile was shrunken to a small square at the bot-tom right corner of the screen. Realizing it may be distracting, Men-nie said he shut off his iPad during the presen-tations, which resulted in people in council chambers seeing a black screen. Despite the black out, Mennie said he was still listening to the live streaming.

But not ever yone agrees with what Mennie is doing.

Several residents have

signed a petition in pro-test.

The petition states that the residents believe “Councillor Mennie is abusing a provision in a city bylaw, to remain as a paid member of the Campbell River city council and represent the desire of these same citizens (and) to have Councillor Ryan Mennie resign his seat as a mem-ber of council, in the best interest of Campbell River taxpayers.”

The Community Char-ter states that “a member of council or a council committee who is unable to attend a council meet-ing or a council commit-tee meeting, as appli-cable, may participate in

the meeting by means of electronic or other com-munication facilities.”

But the residents who have signed the petition say they believe that sec-tion is set aside for coun-cil members who still reside in the community but are unable to attend meetings due to illness, work or other circum-stances beyond their control.

R e s i d e nt D ar ly ne Shane is concerned Men-nie is violating another section of the Com-munity Charter as well. One that states, “a per-son elected or appointed to office on a council is disqualified from hold-

ing that office if any of the following applies: b) the person is absent from council meetings for a period of 60 con-secutive days or 4 con-secutive regularly sched-uled council meetings, whichever is the longer time period, unless the absence is because of ill-ness or injury or is with the leave of council.”

City Clerk Peter Wip-per, in an e-mailed response to Shane, said that while it is true coun-cillors can be disqualified for missing four consecu-tive meetings, a section of the Community Char-ter clarifies that members are deemed to be present

if they are participating electronically.

While Mennie has vowed to attend the remaining council meet-ings between now and November’s municipal election, he has stepped down from the Strath-cona Regional District board and the city’s Advisory Planning and Environment Commis-sion.

Mennie said he will be back in Campbell River this weekend to cut the ribbon for the grand opening of Centennial Park’s new natural play-scape on Saturday and will be speaking as act-ing mayor.

The referendum ques-tion, with a ‘yes’ or ‘no’ option, reads: “Are you in favour of a boundary extension to include a portion of Electoral Area D within the boundaries of the City of Campbell River for the purpose of

connecting to the City of Campbell River sanitary sewer service?”

The city also needs to get approval from Camp-bell River taxpayers and will use the Alternate Approval Process, which gives the city the green light to move forward with the project unless more than 10 per cent of registered voters send a

signed opposition form to city hall. Electors will have until July 21 by 4 p.m. to object.

If the project goes ahead, it will cost Camp-bell River taxpayers an extra $24 a year in user fees for the next 20 years, in order to pay off a $3.9 million project debt.

Area D res idents would be expected to pay $9,300, either in one lump sum or over the course of 20 years, likely starting in 2015. They would have five years to connect to the city’s sewer system and pay an additional $1,800 connection fee. A third cost would be to connect their home to the sewer line, an amount that would vary from home to home.

Tomorrow’s vote brings to an end months of frus-tration from many Area D residents who have repeatedly asked the city to leave them alone, have shown no interest in joining the city and have

protested the city’s pro-posal by putting up signs in Area D that encourage residents to vote ‘no’.

Leigh said everyone is ready to see it come to an end.

“All of our Area D community is looking forward to this process concluding. Once this is over, I am hopeful that we can move on to enjoying our beautiful rural sum-mer in gorgeous Area D,” Leigh said. “I would like to express the grati-tude of my community to Minister Coralee Oakes, who was determined to offer a democratic vote to our rural citizens. I would also like to thank her for appointing Lynn Ketch as Chief Electoral Officer. Ms. Ketch and her team offered my Area residents a people-friendly, professionally-conducted opportunity to vote.”

Salmon Festival orga-nizers got a nice surprise recently.

TSN crews will return to Campbel l River sooner than expected to film the festival’s Logger Sports competition.

While it was welcome news, it was also unex-pected.

“Since we were filmed

in 2011 and 2012, we did not expect another film-ing opportunity from them this soon, as their normal cycle is, film two consecutive years then film other competitions for three or four years before returning,” wrote organizers Philip Hicks, Dave MacLeod, and Jim Lilburn. “Given this, we did not budget for the required filming crew costs that the festival

must cover to be filmed.”Those costs include

return airfare from Toronto to Campbell River, local transpor-tation and accommo-dation. The festival already had donations totalling $3,600 but it wasn’t enough to cover the $5,000 flight from Toronto to Vancouver and return.

That opened the door for the city to step in.

Council, at its meeting June 10, decided to give the festival the remaining $5,000 it was looking for.

Coun. Andy Adams said the money is more than worth the exposure the city will get in return.

Each of the three epi-sodes will air this fall, once on TSN and twice on TSN2, and then again in the spring of 2015, again once on TSN and twice on TSN2.

The city will vary its blasting bylaw to allow construction 24 hours a day, seven days a week as part of the John Hart G enerat ing St at ion upgrade project.

Aecon SNC-Lavalin – under contract by BC Hydro – needs to blast day and night in order to complete a new tunnel to the new underground generating station.

Project manager Scott Marshall said the blasts will not affect residents who live in the vicinity.

“As the majority of work is underground and also over two kilo-metres from the nearest dwelling, noise from our blasting operation will not be a problem,” Mar-shall said.

“BC Hydro has placed very stringent vibra-tion criteria on adjacent structures closer to the blast area than the exist-ing city of Campbell River infrastructure. Seismographs will be

set up for each blast to measure and ensure the vibration levels will not be exceeded.”

City clerk Peter Wip-per said staff do not have a problem with amending the blasting bylaw to accommodate round the clock blasting because, other than the entrance and exit to the tunnel, all blasting will occur underground and shouldn’t be heard.

The city will also alter its construction noise regulations, which per-mit construction noise from 7 a.m.-10 p.m. Monday to Saturday and from 8 a.m.-10 p.m. on Sundays and statutory holidays.

Excavated material from the underground tunnel will need to be loaded and removed from the site 24/7, so Marshall has requested the variance from coun-cil at Tuesday’s council meeting.

“Rock will be hauled both dayshift and night-shift,” Marshall said. “It is anticipated that there

will be between six to eight trucks per hour on both shifts that will leave the general site.”

The trucks will leave from the city’s water treatment facility off Hwy. 28 and will use Hwy. 19 and Hwy. 28 to access two material drop-off sites, one north at Middle Point and the other – a gravel pit off of Willis Road.

Wipper said heavy equipment and dump trucks being loaded will generate noise but the impact will be limited.

“This noise will con-tinue 24/7 and although this noise will impact the city’s water treat-ment facility there will

be no impact on residen-tial areas,” Wipper said. “There are residential properties situated along Highway 28, staff con-ducted an assessment of existing night-time traf-fic along that road. Rep-resentatives of (the) mine at Myra Falls reported that their operation gen-erates approximately 40 vehicle trips between 10 p.m. and 7 a.m. Staff do not believe that the dump trucks hauling will generate higher lev-els of noise so long as the drivers do not use engine brakes.”

Blasting and hauling is expected to take place between July 15 and Oct. 1.

Bears are just doing what comes naturally when they wander out of the woods and into a residential neighbourhood.

The entire region is their native habitat and they don’t worry about town limits signs.

So when they are in a yard and come across garbage cans, they are going to do what comes naturally — chow down.

Bears are always hungry, especially in the spring as they come out of hibernation, and in the fall when they are building up fat levels for hibernation.

It doesn’t take long for a bear to realize that garbage is an easy source of food.

And it is that addiction that brings bears into potential conflict with the human residents of those neighbourhoods. Ultimately, it is the bears who lose because they are destroyed.

But given that bears act purely on instinct, the only solution is for B.C. residents to change their habits.

Keep your garbage can in a secure location, and while you are at it, pull down the bird feeders because the birds don’t need the food in the summer and the seed draws bears. Clean up fruit as it begins to ripen and monitor

your compost.It’s been suggested several times that bears creating a

possible conflict be trapped and relocated to the woods. However, biologists will tell you that once the animal is addicted to garbage, they will walk for several kilometres to the nearest neighbourhood so they can indulge.

Eating garbage is ultimately a death sentence for bears.With bear complaints rising in some areas, now is the

time for residents to become more aware of their natural surroundings and how to live with their four-legged neighbours.

Few things rival the World Cup for shenanigans

We say: We all have to learn to live with bears in this province

Just when I feel a little embarrassed by the shenanigans of hockey players, the craziness of the NHL and our obsession with pro hockey, along comes the world of soccer – sorry, football – to put us in our place.

Yes, The Beautiful Game makes the National Hockey League look like the small potatoes it is.

With the World Cup currently under-way on television screens around the globe, even North Americans get wrapped up in the spectacle that is the biggest sporting event on the planet – yes, it’s even bigger than the Olympics, which is no amateur when it comes to staging a head-shaking spectacle of whining, cheating and generally embar-rassing behaviour in the name of sport. North America is the last holdout in

football’s sporting hegemony. Now that North America has taken the ball and run with it – sorry, I couldn’t resist an ironic metaphor for the North American version of “football” – soccer has indeed conquered the world.

The game has been popular in the U.S. and Canada for a long time and more kids play soccer in Canada than play hockey.

Soccer has always been a part of my life, being an immigrant from the coun-try where partisanship is so ingrained that it sends three teams to contest the great football prize, even though none of them appear in any danger of win-ning it. Of course, now being Canadian, it doesn’t appear as if we’ll be attending the big dance any time soon either. This is supposed to feel significant for some

reason. But such is the World Cup that it stirs

national pride and exhorts people to unite and sing the glory of their team at the top of their lungs in a stadium far, far away. And if you can’t be at the stadium, you can always put on your national team’s colours and plunk yourself down on your living room couch and watch it on the telly. Or, if you’re feeling tribal – and such behavior is encouraged – head down to a local pub with others whose grandparents came from some country somewhere else and cheer on a team whose players’ names you can barely pronounce.

Ah, the World Cup where diving, act-ing, whining and, yes, biting, are all part of the spectacle. And that’s just at the FIFA meetings. Okay, sorry, that last one

was a joke. I don’t know if those things happen in a FIFA meeting but I do know that FIFA is the only organization that can teach the International Olympic Committee a thing or two about politi-cal intrigue. Yes, FIFA is the organization that decided hosting a World Cup in the middle of summer in the one of the hot-test deserts in the world is a good idea.

But despite all the craziness, one thing that transcends it all is the simple beauty of the game and the passion of the fans who suspend belief for a month every four years and celebrate pure athleticism and cunning strategy.

Like all sports, at the heart of it all is a child’s game that still elevates the human spirit to a level of shared joy. Unfortu-nately, childish behaviour surfaces a little too often.

Last week, when walking with my dog along the Beaver Lodge main trail, coming out onto Trask Road, what did I see but a black bear ambling up the road toward us.

I stood and waited for a few moments hoping the bear would decide to hop up to the underbrush and take another route to wherever she/he was going. It didn’t.

There is one house there that has two dogs and I walked into their yard, hoping that either someone was home, or maybe the dogs would bark and scare off the bear. Predict-ably, the dogs barked.

They did their job – well done.Just then a group of ladies walked by, also leaving the trails,

so I told them of the bear and we all looked up the road – no bear, so apparently it had left.

Many thanks to Margo who very kindly gave myself and my dog a ride up to McPhedran. Nature is beautiful, but bears are best viewed from a distance!

The Campbell River Environmental Coun-cil wants to see more studies before approval is given for a proposed contaminated soil treat-ment facility near McIvor Lake.

Upland Excavating wants to build an 18,100 square foot facility that would be housed under a dome in order to reme-diate “dirty dirt,” up to 50,000 cubic metres. The company says there’s a there’s a need for such a facility due to limited locations on Vancou-

ver Island to remediate hydrocarbon contami-nated soil.

But f i rs t Upland requires approval from the Ministry of Envi-ronment and has filed a 64-page technical report prepared by consultants Terrawest Environmen-tal Inc. The report was issued June 6 and pro-vides the public with 30 days to make comments to the ministry.

That’s not enough time, according to the local environmental council, which wants to first see detailed hydrology and geotechnical studies.

“My question is, where does the groundwater go?” council president Leona Adams told the Mirror. “People who are wells and the people of Campbell River need to know about this – this is their drinking water.”

In a letter from the

council to the City of Campbell River, Adams further outlined their concerns for the facility proposed for 7311 Gold River Hwy.:

“These lands and the entire contaminated soil remediation activities are situated on top of a large aquifer which is on the south, east and north shore of McIvor Lake. McIvor lake is part of Lower Campbell Lake and connects to John Hart Lake, which is the source of Campbell River’s drinking water…(we are) concerned over the potentially severe impact of the proposed contaminated storage and treatment facility on the quality of our drink-ing water.”

According to the Ter-rawest technical report, “The design, construc-tion and operation of the facility meet or

exceed the requirements detailed with the Minis-try of Environment pro-tocol.”

The report outlines how Upland intends to capture any runoff waters at the lowest point using one sump pump. But Adams wonders if that will be good enough, pointing out that the Quinsam Coal mine uses two sump pumps at its site and that’s sometimes not quite enough to col-lect all the runoff.

“And where will the effluent be treated?” she asked. Adams is hopeful the period for public response can be extended at least until further studies are avail-able. As it stands, the deadline is July 5.

“The deadline should be extended,” said city councillor Larry Samson. “I don’t even know if the residents living around

McIvor Lake have been consulted or are even aware about this.”

Samson said the issue was raised at a recent committee of the whole meeting and he’s further spoken to Environment Ministry representa-tives about the concerns raised by the local envi-ronmental council. He also wanted to clarify whether Upland has the proper zoning to be build a contaminated soil treatment facility.

“City staff indicate they do have the proper zon-ing – but it’s not clear,” he said. “There are ques-tions to be asked about the amount of soil to be treated, where is it com-ing from, and the prox-imity to our watershed and the Quinsam River?”

Upland manager Mike Stuart was not available for comment at press time.

BraveHearts and River Spirit dragon boat teams want to thank all Relay for Life organizers, volunteers and supporters for their hard work and determination in making this year’s event a success.

The two teams also invite everyone to their fourth annual Race the River dragon boat regatta on Satur-day at Dick Murphy Park on the Tyee Spit.

Races begin at 8:30 a.m. and the day will be full of food, fun and entertainment.

With 19 teams participating this year, the racing will be fast and furious. Marine Harvest will provide delicious barbecued salmon burgers for lunch with all funds raised going to the Campbell River Hospice.

There will also be local entertainers, Serious Folk, Cat & Kalvin, Heartland and Ron Tilley. There will be a carnation ceremony at noon recognizing cancer sur-vivors, those who are fighting the disease and those who have lost their battle. To avoid parking problems, a free shuttle, provided by Pacific Western Transit, will run between the parking lot behind SuperStore to the site and back throughout the day.

Natural playground opens Saturday with free events

A natural play space is very different from your average playground – it’s not just swings and a tee-ter totter.

It is “a space intention-ally designed or desig-nated to integrate natu-ral components into a

place for structured and unstructured play and learning.”

Nature-based play encourages active play ( jumping, running, cl imbing) and cre-ative play (art making, make-believe and build-ing) leads to hours of unstructured fun.

This type of play sup-ports children’s physi-cal, intellectual and socio-emotional devel-opment. It also provides

an important early con-nection for children with nature and creates future environmental stewards.

On Saturday, the city is hosting an event that will give community mem-bers the opportunity to enjoy the newly designed Centennial Park.

L ast Tuesday the Campbell River Track and Field Club hosted its first Hershey’s Track Meet. This free commu-nity event was attended by more than 35 children aged 9-14 years.

Each child competed in up to three track and field events including a standing long jump, soft-ball throw, 100m dash, and 600-1200m distance run.

The Comets coaches organized and ran the meet, with many of the senior Comets athletes volunteering to measure

and/or time the events. These athletes, includ-

ing former Comet Bren-dan Hoff, were more than happy to give point-

ers and encouragement to the younger competi-tors.

Attendance was made even sweeter as every

participant also received a delicious Hershey’s treat.

These fun meets are held throughout North America to help promote physical fitness, partici-pation and sportsman-ship, while introducing children to the basics of track and field…the RUN, JUMP and THROW principles.

Sponsored by Her-shey’s, the track meets have been held for more than 36 years, with regional finalists eligi-ble to attend the North American Finals Meet in

Hershey, Pennsylvania, U.S.A. later in August.

Every second year, Powell River plays host to some of the finest choirs from around the world at the International Choral Kathaumixw.

One of the happy ben-efits for Campbell River music lovers is that we’re able to enjoy a concert by one of the visiting choirs before they return to their homeland.

This year we have the good fortune to hear the Tachov Children’s Choir from the Czech Republic.

Under the direction of founding director Josef Brabanec, the Tachov Children’s Choir has won numerous international awards.

The group has per-formed in 16 European countries, South Africa,

Brazil, Argentina and China before coming to Canada.

With 60 voices in their principal choir, they per-form a wide variety of folk, secular and sacred music.

Hot spots:Green Can and The Hump If you looked across Discovery Passage towards Cape Mudge and south of the lighthouse last weekend you would have seen close to a hundred boats � shing just south of Quadra Island. The salmon � shing was great with most anglers getting their limit, including Dallas Currie who went out for the � rst time. Lots of hatchery-clipped coho are being caught as well as springs, mainly around The Hump, but the Green Can seems to be the spot where � shermen are headed. Feeder springs are averaging 14-19 pounds and lots of sizes are in the high 20s. A few Tyee have come in with the largest being 34 pounds. Fishing slowed down a bit

last Sunday as the whales went through, but all

in all, the � shing is off to a great start

in Campbell River.

Women’s Derby The 22nd annual women’s salmon derby wrapped up on Sunday at Painter’s Lodge with Lois McRae from Gibbons, Alberta being the overall winner with her catch of 28.6 pounds while Maridee Fitch coming in second with her salmon of 28.4 pounds. Fifty-six ladies took to the water this year and many have been coming to Campbell River for many years and will continue to � sh here in the future. This was also the � rst salmon derby for Lavinna Lee, a baby from Seattle, Washington who was here with her mother Lisa. Both mother and daughter had a wonderful � shing experience. Just over 2,000 pounds of

salmon were caught at the derby. Ladies that register for the derby each year are assigned � shing guides on registration day and � sh out of 17-foot whalers on Discovery Passage.

Best Bait Saltwater anglers are using a wide variety of hootchies, and the big springs have been hitting on the big plugs. On the local lakes, the early morning hours seem to be the best time to get out. You can � sh from shore using worms and some small trout can be taken. We are a few weeks away from the arrival of the pinks, reports will � lter in from Sayward then Browns Bay and then the pinks will be in the Campbell River.

Remember, signing up for the program in 2014 means your payments will apply to your 2015 property taxes.

The City’s new Pre-Authorized Withdrawal Service for Property Taxes will allow Campbell River property tax payers the ability to make regular monthly payments towards next year’s property taxes.

MORE PARKING DURING PROPERTY TAX TIMEIf you are coming to City Hall to pay your taxes, we’re making more room for you. From June 16 – July 2 (inclusive) additional public parking is being made available at City Hall.

Those coming in to City Hall to make property tax payments are encouraged to park in the larger City Hall parking lot with access off the Alder street hill leading into and out of downtown.

During this time, parking stalls numbered 1-38 and 41-47 will be available for public use.

The smaller parking lot at the top of St. Ann’s remains available for public parking but is limited to only 11 stalls.

THELMA SILKENSMUSEUM AT CAMPBELL RIVER

Hardwicke Island lies in Johnstone Strait, 80 kilometres north of Campbell River.

The island’s homes and a cluster of logging camp build-ings are spread along its west-ern shoreline, facing Kelsey Bay and the village of Sayward on Vancouver Island.

Settlement at Hardwicke began in the early 1900s. Sev-eral bachelors occupied Crown Grants, and the Kelsey family were homesteading there when a steam-powered tug pulled five large floats into the bay in 1918. Aboard the floats were buildings, logging equipment, crew members and Hans and Gertrude Bendickson with their young family, six sons and one daughter, aged from one and a half to eleven years old.

Originally from Norway, the Bendicksons and their mainly Norwegian crew had already lived at other coastal locations while logging timber licences. At Hardwicke they set down roots; clearing land and rais-ing livestock while continuing to log.

Soon after the Bendickson camp moved ashore, Hans Bendickson and William Kelsey built a small school-house on a rise of land between their two homes. During the 1920s and 30s a succession of young woman teachers pre-sided over a handful of pupils.

The Kelseys moved across the water to what became Kelsey Bay, but among the families that came to the island in these early years, the Erik-

sons and Edwards also estab-lished long-lasting ties. The Edwards and their neighbours the Thompsons lived several miles from the bay, but the children walked in every kind of weather to attend school.

As the Bendickson children grew up, they took an active part in homesteading and log-ging, and helped build a large family home. The eldest son, Arthur, married Enda Cuth-bert, who had come to Hard-wicke on her first teaching job. Later, one of her pupils, Hazel Anderson, became the wife of the youngest son Jim. The first wedding, however, was that of the Bendicksons’ only daughter

Lilly, to Olaf Hansen, the eldest son of the Hansen family at nearby Port Neville. The long friendship between the two Norwegian families was fur-ther strengthened when Lilly’s brother Harold married Olaf ’s sister Edith.

George (who never mar-ried), Arthur, Harold and Jim continued the logging business begun by their father. During the 1940s they, their wives and children and other young fami-lies lived on a float camp which they moved to various logging sites. The other two Bendick-son brothers Barney and Fred, who served during World War II in the Air Force and Army

respectively, lived in Vancou-ver. Barney owned Bendickson Towing with a fleet of tugboats and Fred was a shipwright.

In 1949 Bendickson Log-ging moved back to Hardwicke Island. The houses were pulled ashore and a land based camp was established. Across from the northern tip of Hardwicke, tiny, rocky Yorke Island had been a strategic military for-tification during World War II. Now the fort was being dismantled and the company purchased a number of its for-mer buildings. Several became bunkhouses; one became a new, larger schoolhouse, and a small building was converted

into the ‘Teacherage’, a little house for the teacher

Crew members were encour-aged to bring their families to Hardwicke, in order to create a stable workforce, increase school enrolment and build up a community.

The community thrived. As another generation grew up, there were sports days, Christmas concerts, dances, a Friday night movie, baseball games, picnics, fishing trips. A breakwater was created to pro-tect the boat harbour, and as was the case for other coastal settlements, a freight boat stopped regularly with grocer-ies ordered from Woodwards of Vancouver.

Vegetable and flower gardens flourished. Kids played and swam in the frigid salt water while their mothers sat and visited on the beach. A party-line telephone connected the houses, each place identified by the hand-cranked number of long and short rings.

The passing years brought inevitable changes, but the ties that were forged by Hard-wicke’s early residents have remained strong through suc-ceeding generations of their families.

Nearly a century later, descendants of the Bendick-sons, Eriksons and Edwards have homes at Hardwicke today.

Recently, the Campbell River Aerie presented $1,700 to the Campbell River Hospital Founda-tion to go towards the purchase of an infant sta-bilette for the Maternity Department at Campbell River Hospital.

These funds were raised over the last three years through an annual bonspiel organized by the Campbell River Aerie.

On average, 400 babies are born in the Campbell River hospital each year and an infant stabilette is present at each birth. This equipment is used to perform a baby’s first exam and health care measurements.

The stabilette also functions as a neonatal crash cart in the event there are complications after birth.

The cost of a stabilette is $25,000.

Founded in 1898, the Fraternal Order of Eagles is an international non-profit organization unit-ing fraternally in the spirit of liberty, truth,

The history, the geog-raphy and the wildlife combine to create an unforgettable experi-ence. This summer, the Museum at Campbell River is once again offer-ing a series of guided Historic Boat Tours each Sunday during July and August that explore the Discovery Islands and points north.

The first trip is planned for July 6, from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m., and will travel to Desolation Sound.

the West Coast’s premier cruising destinations, Desolation Sound is an amazing place. Enter-ing into the sound, it is difficult to believe that

Captain Vancouver once proclaimed the area to be so dismal, that he named it as he did. With the vista of the snowcapped Coast Mountains to the

east, the verdant land-scape of West Redonda Island and picturesque Lewis Channel to the north, it represents the quintessential beauty of British Columbia’s west coast. This tour will stop at Lund, a historic village billed as the gateway to Desolation Sound.

Those who have said goodbye to the work-a-day grind now

have many hours to settle down and relax. People who have continually put off vacations in lieu of work responsibilities may now have all the time they need to explore the world.

Traveling for seniors can be rewarding and relaxing. Those with a substantial retirement nest egg have numerous destinations at their disposal. Mature vacationers travel more frequently and stay longer than any other age group. Travel ranks among the top leisure activities for men and women over 50.

Seniors can fi nd several travel advantages at their disposal. Also, thanks to special senior discounts, travel may be even more affordable than fi rst expected.

While certain destinations are not always practical for certain age brackets, there are many places to which seniors can visit comfortably and enjoy a wealth of memories.

Theme parks:Although theme parks may seem carved out entirely for the adventure-seekers, there are many other more placid activities that would appeal to those who prefer to keep their feet fi rmly on the ground rather than looping through the air on a rocket-propelled coaster. With animal preserves, water parks, fi ne dining, and a bevy of hotels either in the park or directly on the outskirts, theme parks provide many activities for older travelers. Although theme parks require a lot of walking, many provide wheelchairs or motorized scooters for those who need to get off of their feet. They also make a great option for

seniors who will be traveling with the entire family, including children.

Beach resorts:Provided fl ying is medically safe, a beachside vacation can be the ideal trip for seniors looking for the utmost in relaxation. For those who have passports, the possibilities are endless. Those who prefer to remain on relatively domestic soil can retreat to the Okanagan or other warmer Canadian cities during the summer months.

Cruising:Cruising is a preferred vacation choice for the 50+ set because it offers the convenience of an all-inclusive package and transportation all in one. With the myriad activities offered on board, cruises are a versatile vacation option for seniors. Also, there is no need to worry about traveling far for meals and other entertainment options, as everything is self-contained on the cruise ship. For more active seniors who enjoy the daily getaway, excursions in ports of call can provide the

variety desired.

Guided tours:Seniors who want to experience a piece of history can sign up for tour packages backed by reputable companies. The tours may involve train or bus travel, and various attractions will be visited. At the end of the tour, individuals can choose to extend the vacation by checking into a hotel nearby.

RV trips:Another self-contained vacation that is entirely up to the people traveling is vacationing by recreational vehicle. Seniors can customize their routes depending on which areas they want to see. RV rental businesses enable people to rent an RV so they needn’t worry about the expense of buying one outright.

However, should RV traveling become addictive, there always is the option of buying a camper later on. Setting an itinerary and then establishing the pace enables travelers to tour the country or cross the
