City council will consider upgrad-ing the council chambers at City Hall to make the room more acces-sible to those with disabilities.

The initiative came from Coun. Larry Samson who said City Hall is not accessibly-friendly.

“Things like the council chambers should use universal standards,” said Samson who noted that council is inadvertently excluding certain members of the community.“We’re sorely lacking in here in that our sound system does not allow for people with declining loss of hear-ing or people with other problems that allows them to participate in the council meetings.”

though, after complaints from neighbours near the proposed site and the discovery that the land was not owned by the city.

Not to be deterred, Pechter and Ravai were back at council Aug. 24 to propose a new loca-tion, this time at the Sportsplex.

“We feel this is a really great use of recreational space for the city and it also works to the advan-tage of the mountain bike park facility,” Ravai said. “There’s already washrooms, parking,

and garbage cans on site; it’s super central to the community and where people live and it works with other activi-ties that are offered at the Sportsplex.”

One of those activi-ties is SprocKids – an instructional program that Ravai and Pechter teach to young riders learning the sport of mountain biking. What’s missing, however, is a facility where they can learn hands-on.

That’s where the skills park comes in. The pair intend to build a facility for beginners and inter-

mediate riders with dirt jumps, practice trails, some obstacles, teeter-totters and wooden fea-tures such as bridges.

Ravai and Pechter are proposing to locate the park in the empty site between the skate park and Alder Street. Devel-opment plans would include split cedar fenc-ing to act as a buffer between Alder Street and the bike park as well as vegetation to provide

aesthetic appeal and help block the noise gener-ated by the park.

Coun. Ron Kerr said he liked the chosen loca-tion because it appeared to address problems the RCMP identified with the previous Beaver Lodge Lands site, includ-ing visibility.

“It doesn’t look like bad things are going to hap-pen in this type of envi-ronment,” Kerr said.

Coun. Charlie Corn-

field said he agreed with Ravai that the Sportsplex is centrally located and it would be accessible to the majority of the com-munity.

But councillors Larry Samson and Marlene Wright felt strongly that the Sportsplex is not the right location.

Because of the topog-raphy, both Samson and Wright said they felt the facility wouldn’t be able to properly accommo-

date advanced riders.“I think that it’s a mis-

take to bring in a big project and make it as restrictive as you’re sug-gesting and not have the advanced skills,” Wright said.

But Ravai said the facil-ity, which is expected to include one trail for more advanced riders, is more geared towards beginners and teaching them the skills they need to ride safely once they

graduate to the bigger trails and rougher terrain found in places like the Snowden Demonstration Forest.

Ross Milnthorp, the city’s manager of parks, recreation and culture, said that city staff sup-port the Sportsplex site.

After hearing from Milnthorp, council voted to approve the Sportsplex location in principle, with councillors Samson and Wright opposed.

so that everyone has access and everyone can clearly hear – and see – what’s going on.

“People that sit at the delegation table sit with their back to the audi-ence,” Samson said. “When we have large delegations they have to be out into the hall-ways instead of having the ability to open up the back wall to actually allow the people to actu-ally be participating in the meeting.”

Looking around the council chambers at the Aug. 24 council meet-ing, Samson said he’d also like to see the city’s wood-first policy incor-porated into any renova-tions within the council chambers.

“I look at the concrete beams up here and I think ‘why can’t we have a wood-first policy’?” said Samson who added he’d like to see his sug-gestions taken into con-sideration during coun-cil’s budget planning meetings for next year.

“The Nov. 23 council meeting allows it to be prepared prior to our 2016 financial delibera-tions because it will be a service level change, but I think it’s something that is long overdue.”

In the end, council agreed with Samson’s points and voted to have city staff come back with a report on different design costs and options to upgrade council chambers.

The design options are expected to incorporate the following:n The concept of uni-

versal standards which will allow the use of council chambers to be usable by all people without the need for adaptation or specialized design.n The use of further

technological changes such as paperless agen-das.n A modernization

of the chambers incor-porating a wood first policy.n The expansion of the

gallery’s seating capacity for larger participation.

Canada Post has begun installing its new community mailboxes around Campbell River.

The boxes, which fea-ture a design incorporat-ing maple leaves on the sides, are starting to pop up around the city.

Anick Losier, spokes-person for Canada Post, said the new mailboxes will go into effect in less than two weeks, putting an end to home mail delivery.

“ T h o s e w h o are affected by the change will all be moved to their CMB (community mailbox) for delivery on Sept. 21,” Losier said.

Residents are expected to receive the keys to their new mailbox by Sept. 16.

Roughly 270 com-munity mailboxes are being installed, which will eliminate door-to-

door mail delivery to the 8,543 Campbell River households that still receive home delivery.

As w a s re c e nt ly reported in the Mirror, Canada Post will pay the City of Campbell River $50 for each mailbox

site it develops on city-owned property.

Canada Post’s move to install community mail-boxes is part of a larger plan to completely phase out home delivery across the entire country over the next five years.

J.R. RARDONCAMPBELL RIVER MIRROR

Construction on the John Hart Power Gener-ating replacement proj-ect continues to expand, advancing on four fronts this month, BC Hydro has announced.

One of those projects may impact visitors using the trail system entering Elk Falls Pro-vincial Park in the com-ing week.

In addition to ongo-ing blasting at the main power generating cav-ern and its associated tunnels, work on the new intake system at John Hart Dam, and the beginning of construc-tion on the water dis-charge outlet below the power station, workers this week will be pre-paring the site for the new surge tower near the current trail system leading into the park

and to the popular Elk Falls suspension bridge.

Beginning this week, tree removal will take place along the access road that parallels the existing woodstave pen-stocks, near the pedes-trian bridge that crosses the three penstocks.

“People should expect sporadic delays of about 10 minutes (each) to safely allow the contrac-tor to fall the trees,” BC Hydro spokesperson Stephen Watson wrote in the project update released at the end of August.

Delays are expected to continue for about a week. After the trees are removed, the access road will then be wid-ened to allow for two-way construction traffic to the new surge tank area.

The single surge tank will eventually replace the three exist ing,

90-metre surge towers, which provide pressure control for each of the three penstocks.

The new tank will serve the same pur-pose in the new, under-ground inflow tunnel when the project is completed, tentatively set for fall of 2018.

“Popeye” on the jobConstruction crews’

answer to a problematic area of “unconsolidated ground” — or loose rock — in the main access tunnel has been to adopt the New Aus-trian Tunneling Method (NATM), which has been growing in use throughout Europe in recent years.

At the John Hart project site, this takes the form of installing pipes along the roof of the tunnel and grout-ing between the pipes before excavating the

loose rock below.Instead of blasting,

excavation is done by a CAT 328 excavator with a specialized arm nicknamed the “Popeye Arm” due to its bulky claw and outer exten-sion.

Going to bat for batsUnderground work-

ers were credited with capturing and releasing a bat that had become caught in the mine area recently, but the death of other bats that were caught in the under-ground ventilation sys-tem led to a more pro-active solution.

“The contractors have been working with envi-ronmental professionals to grate off different areas to prevent bats from entering,” Watson said.

“These adjustments have been successful to date.”

“It’s the most wonderful time, of the year,” the tongue-in-cheek commercial jingle chimes from the television as two rapturous parents load up on school supplies in front of glowering youngsters dreading the return of the school year.

It was a funny twist on the return to school and the usually-Christmas sentiment when the commercial spot appeared a few years ago.

But, of course, the return of the school year is a mix-ture of blessings, dread and opportunities for parents as much as for students. Despite the expectation of freedom the advertisement expresses, the beginning of the school year is a busy time for everyone in the family. Not only are classes starting up for students but

so are sports, dance, arts, music, youth activities. For parents, as well, there is a line up of classes, fitness times, volunteer organization meetings and much more.

The beginning of the school year is a time for par-ents and other adults to begin their “new year” of activities as well.

Add to that the fall birthdays that have to be cel-ebrated in an around the busy fall schedule – a sched-ule that summer birthdays aren’t pressured by.

In short, back to school is a busy time for all. Despite what the ad implies, it’s a wonderful time for many students as well as other members of our community. Take time out during this busy period to appreciate the opportunities living in our community provides and take time out for a breather here and there as an individual and as a family.

Meanwhile, with our kids trundling back to classes, be especially aware when driving on our streets as youngsters flood the sidewalks and trails to their schools. Keep an eye out for not only the bleary-eyed youths making their way back to school but also for their equally-bleary-eyed parents driving them.

Let’s make this a safe and happy school year for everybody. Good luck to all of the students in School District 72.

It’s that time of year again

Our View

We say: The new school year is a time of new beginnings for all

Here for a good time, not a long timeSomewhere along the way, it

became a custom for scribblers at community newspapers like the Mirror to draft columns of introduction and farewell to the readers in their fair cities.

To be blunt, I didn’t expect to pen both of them in the same year.

A professional development opportunity will take our fam-ily a little farther down-Island beginning next week, continu-ing a trend that began earlier this year when I came to the Mirror from the North Island Gazette in Port Hardy.

Frankly, this southward drift tugs against my natural inclina-tion.

Now it’s on to the Parksville-Qualicum Beach News, where I can only hope the people I work with in the office and in the community match the quality and dedication of those I’ve had the privilege to share time with during my brief stay in Campbell River.

To be sure, it was a interest-ing seven-plus months. Your junior hockey team swept the table in the Vancouver Island, the BC Provincial and Western

Canadian Championships. The year began with a new mayor and council, new school board and new regional district board of directors getting their collec-tive feet underneath them.

A new hotel opened down-town, shor t ly after the grand opening for the n e i g h b o u r i n g Berwick by the Sea retirement community, but Campbell River said farewell to t he l andmark Quinsam Hotel after nearly a cen-tury in operation in Campbellton.

M a j o r c o n -struction projects at John Hart power station and at Camp-bell River Hospital brought employment opportunities and contracts, boosting the local economy.

But at the same time, contin-ued market challenges in the resource sector and infrastruc-ture forced temporary closures of both Quinsam Coal’s pro-

duction facility and Nyrstar’s Myra Falls zinc and copper mine.

The newspaper industry was not immune to market changes. Black Press first purchased,

then closed, the Courier-Islander, leaving the Mir-ror as the com-munity ’s lone local newspaper.

Which is to say, your local news-paper.

Through it all, what stands out for me is how involved the peo-ple of Campbell River are with this publication. And rightly so.

I’ve worked at a number of dif-ferent papers through the years and have never seen the sheer volume of freely contributed material from interested people and organizations.

This certainly give both Mir-ror staff and our readers a leg up on the tectonic shift under-way in the business of news media.

No longer can newspaper staffs simply dictate what they share and how they present it. With online outlets and social media providing a 24/7 blitz of information, there is a pressure to jump into the flow to keep from being left behind.

At the same time, the role of the journalist remains. That non-stop flood of information is choked with flotsam and jet-sam of rumour, innuendo and misdirection, and it is our job to seine the facts and share them while making clear how they relate to the community and its people.

Plenty of readers will be happy to point out “the news-paper” doesn’t know every-thing that’s going on in our community. And we’ll be the first to admit it. That’s where you come in. Tips and even questions about something you see may well lead to a reporter breaking a story that is impor-tant, useful or interesting to your neighbours. It’s happened before, and will happen again.

I’m on the way out, but the Mirror will be fine. It’s got you.

Thanks for a great ride.

In this day and age of accessibility of awareness, it is surprising to hear that Campbell River’s city council chambers are so inaccessible.

Coun. Larry Samson has put the city on notice of his desire to see the chamber’s accessibility improved. Good for him. There’s no excuse for a modern civic building to be such an obstacle to people with physi-cal disabilities in our community.

Now, of course, such upgrades are going to cost money and council will have to find that money during upcoming budget deliberations. City spend-ing is a big issue in this community and any capital expenditures are going to be scrutinized and criti-cized. However, there are some projects that warrant appropriate attention and this is one. How it will be done will be left up to our city staff and councillors but a reasonable plan is necessary.

Steve Somerset, General Sales Manager for Bill Howich Chrysler, announced plans to hold the 23rd Annual used car and truck event with used vehicles starting at seventy-seven dollars and up Saturday, September 14, 2013. According to Mr. Somerset, sales from the last few months have resulted in an extra amount of used cars and trucks. “In the last few months we have increased our used inventory at a tremendous rate. Now we need to reduce the number of cars and trucks on our lot. During this seventy-seven dollar sale every used car and truck will be sold for hun-dreds to thousands below the original price.” Mr. Somerset said, “Our customers should find these prices as low as auc-tion prices in many cases.”

This is the 23rd $77 Sale at our dealership and we have

sold over 750 vehicles into the Campbell River North Island region.

Here, every used car and truck is on sale. FIRST COME, FIRST SERVED AND NO BIDDING. It’s the perfect opportunity to get a goodquality used product at the lowest price possible, includ-ing cars for only seventy-seven dollars. All cars and trucks will be on display at 2777 North Island Highway, Campbell River. At 8:30 a.m. all vehicles will be opened so that buy-ers may inspect the vehicles for one hour before the sale begins at 9:30 a.m. Whomever is sitting behind the wheel at 9:30 a.m. when the prices are DRASTICALLY REDUCED on the windshield will be given first opportunity to purchase the vehicle at the DRASTICALLY REDUCED price. This innova-tive approach to selling used vehicles will make it easy and quick for anybody in the mar-ket to own a good used car or truck at a very low price with no hassle.

“We have business managers who will help buyers arrange

low-cost financing, as well as bank representatives that will be present. We’ve got over 3 million dollars in used inven-tory to choose from. Our total inventory will be over 200 used cars and trucks, including our X-lease inventory. We want to remind everybody that this is a one-day sale only! When our inventory has been reduced, we will remove the sale prices and return to normal operations.

“Since we are a local business, we would like to give back to the community,” Mr. Somerset said. “We would rather allow local people to buy these vehi-cles than wholesale them at an auction.”

Do you have any advice for beginning the new school year?Nights are cooler, days are noticeably shorter. September is the time when school, activities, and programs gear up again, bringing both angst and enthusiasm.

The simplest advice is often the best. Here’s mine: Be kind, both to others around you, and to yourself. When stressed with a new situation or environment, people look for connection with others. Kindness helps to make that connection, whether it’s letting someone else go ahead in a line-up, paying for another’s coffee, or offering a smile and gentle hello.

Remember to be kind to yourself too. Give yourself space and time to adjust to new places and new people. A gentle act of kindness towards another person can also be a gift to yourself.

When you’re looking for connection this fall, try kindness. If you’re struggling, there is always something you can do. Take the rst step -- Talk to Fran.

How does the weaker Canadian dollar affect my gold price?

The lower Canadian dollar is not all bad news. Gold is priced in U.S dollars, as our dollar drops, the price of your gold goes up.You are simply getting more Canadian dollars for your gold. The other way to beat both markets, is to have August turn your old goldinto a custom item of your own design. This is a very popular option, and August only charges Canadian dollars.

Care

How does respite carehelp caregivers? Often taking care of a loved one is a responsibility that is added into an already crowded schedule. It can entail driving to and from doctor appointments, grocery shopping, cooking, cleaning up or just checking in on a daily basis to be sure the proper medications are being taken and the dishes are washed. In some instances, a lengthy commute to be sure all is in order is part of the routine. Providing care and support for another household can add hours to an already demanding day. Stretching your time and your energy too thin can result in you being the one who cannot function properly. That is why respite care has such value. It gives you time to stop, catch a breath, and rest up. The person who is receiving care is comfortable, getting necessary attention, and can rest easy in the knowledge that you are getting a much deserved break in your schedule. Whether you have someone who has an ongoing illness, or even someone who has just been released from the hospital, reaching out to a professional respite-care provider can make all the difference. Knowing that someone who is trained in the health care profession is providing support and encouragement for your relative enables you to maintain a peaceful state of mind and a guilt-free healthy life balance. With respite services, you can ‘recharge’ without fear that the person relying on your care is being abandoned. Whether it is for the time needed with medical assistance while recovering from a hospital stay, or a short stay with respite while the caregiver attends business meetings, peace of mind is the best medicine a caregiver can receive.

What is Cal-Mag’s Key Role in the Garden ?Calcium, an essential part of the plant’s cell wall structure, improves the absorption of other nutrients by the roots and their translocation within the plant, and contributes to improved disease resistance.

Calcium De cienciesCalcium de ciency symptoms appear initially as generally stunted plant growth . Cupping of mature leaves is a tell tale sign of a calcium de ciency. Classic symptoms of a calcium de ciency include blossom-end rot of tomato (death of the end part of the fruits), tip burn of lettuce, blackheart of celery and death of the growing regions in many plants.

Magnesium De cienciesDe ciencies typically occur with the middle or lower leaves. The most common symptoms are interveinal chlorosis or yellowing between leaf veins, which stay green, giving a marbled appearance.

Calcium and magnesium are found in most plant nutrients. They are also available combined into one bottle as a supplement. Come by anytime and see our selection of Cal-Mag supplements!

Why can’t I just name my estate as the bene ciary on all my insurance & investments?

The problem with naming your estate is that all of your insurance proceeds and investments will then be tied up in your estate until it is settled. This can be months or it can be years. If you have a spouse, the proceeds will not be easily accessible to them. However, if you name your spouse as bene ciary, these assets can switch over to them quickly and easily. If your investments are in segregated funds you can name a bene ciary (even on a non-registered portfolio) and it will be paid out much like an insurance policy. Naming bene ciaries, whether it is your spouse, children, or a charity, makes your nal estate less complicated and gives your heirs, rather than the CRA, a bigger piece of the pie.

Why did my life insurance suddenly jump in cost? Term insurance is typically the cheapest to purchase up front: the shorter the period the lower the price. Simply put, the insurance company is betting that you won’t die in the short term, however, if you aren’t healthy enough to get new insurance at the end of that term, the insurance company assumes you are now a higher risk, so the cost increases signi cantly. If you are healthy when it gets close to the renewal date of your life insurance policy, it is always advisable to look at replacing it. You should use a broker who can give you quotes from a number of companies, but make sure they are quoting ‘standard’ rates not ‘preferred’ which may not allow for fair comparison. Contact our of ce to book a complimentary review of your existing insurance.

The BC Thanks-giving Food Drive is an

annual event which began in Burnaby in 2009, has spread to over 50 cities in the province and helps thousands of needy individuals and families throughout British Columbia.

In 2014, over 400,000 lbs of food was collected by more than 6,000 volunteers (valued at approx. $900,000) and was sorted and deliv-ered to community food banks. The goal this year is to collect over 600,000 lbs of food. This year’s food drive takes place from Sept. 14–19 and it is antici-pated there will be more volunteer participants from dozens of partner-ing businesses, churches and organizations who will visit some 250,000 addresses across the

province that week. In B.C., over 100,000 turn to their local food bank each year to help feed themselves and their families. Almost 40 per cent of recipients are under the age of 18.

Here’s how it works: Between Monday and Wednesday of collec-tion week (Sept. 14-16) volunteers will deliver flyers and donation bags to residential addresses along assigned routes. The fyers offer instruc-tions on how to donate and include contact information should you have any ques-tions. Anyone wishing to make a donation of non-perishable food items is asked to place them in the bag and leave it on their door-step before 9:30 a.m. on Collection Day, Satur-day, Sept. 19.

Volunteers will travel

back through their neighborhoods to col-lect these donations. On the same day, these donations will be gath-ered at central locations and then transported to the Campbell River Food Bank. Watch for your bag and donate generously. If your neighbourhood did not receive collection bags, you are welcome to drop off donations at your local gathering site.

If you are interested in volunteering in the Campbell River area, or want to know where to drop off your donations, you can contact SueAnn Deeble 250-923-3574. More information can be found at bctfood-drive.org.

A-1RADIATORS LTD.

New operators to reopen the QuinnieBy John Twigg, Secretary

Campbellton Neighbourhood Association

The dear old Quinsam Hotel, affectionately known as the Quinnie, will soon be re-opening and operating much as before, namely as a restaurant, bar/pub and live music venue.

The CNA learned of the news last week while taking photos of the new pedestrian crossing lights installed at the Old Island Highway and Maple Street right in front of the long-popular pub, which is almost 100 years old.

The hotel and its liquor licence will still be owned by the We Wai Kai (Cape Mudge) Nation but band administrator Brian Kelly confirmed that it all has been leased to Port Alberni businessman Brian Welz, who is being aided by Fred Mohammed, also from Port Alberni and both with extensive experience in the pub and live-music scenes around B.C.

"We're glad to be only landlords now," said Kelly, explaining that the band as the owner of the facility since 2007 had found in the recent years of difficult market conditions that it lacked the industry expertise needed to run it successfully.

"The ball's in their court from here on," he added, noting it will be nice to see the whole facility back in operation.

Welz was out of province and not available for comment but Mohammed said they're aiming to reopen by next Tuesday (Sept. 15) but that may be an optimistic target given such things as the need to revive the liquor licence, do a few repairs, hire staff, bring in supplies and attend to other details.

However booking bands may not be a problem because when the venue shut down earlier this year one of the things most immediately missed was a local place for local musicians to play in, as we noted in the July 31 edition of this column - which may also have been part of what brought the opportunity to the attention of Welz and Mohammed.

CNA chair Brian Shaw, whose Mackie Research office is across the street, also welcomed the Quinnie's reopening, saying It's good news for the community and it's good for Campbellton.

"Clearly experienced investors have seen the potential and with good management we'll see a future there," he said, lauding the former restaurant's great food and excellent camaraderie over lunchtime.

"I like dropping in to the pub from time to time too - It's a great spot to see local entertainment at its best," he added.

CROSSING LIGHTS WELCOMEDMeanwhile the CNA also welcomed the recent installation of the pedestrian crossing lights at Maple and Island Highway as a welcome safety feature.

That stretch of road often has a lot of fast-moving traffic, which the CNA noticed several years ago when it did its initial inventory studies of items needed to improve the area.

The pedestrian lights were installed jointly by the City of Campbell River and the provincial Ministry of Transportation and Infrastructure and follow a similar installation at Petersen and 14th Avenue.

Shaw welcomed the new lights as a sign of progress on the CNA's concerns and noted more such crossing lights are needed at other busy intersections as is better lighting in general.

Shaw can be reached at 250-287-8807 or [email protected] .

Songs of peace with the Quadra Singers

DON MOTTERSHEAD/SPECIAL TO THE MIRROR

Quadra Singers are gearing up for their December concert and are recruiting new members.

Artists of all ages who would like to create and trade min-iature works of art are invited to attend the next Artist Trad-ing Card event at the Campbell River Art Gallery.

The event takes place on Thursday, Sept. 17 at 7 p.m. and is a fun, social and creative program that meets four times a year to swap trading cards.

The only difference between these and sports trading cards is that you create your own homemade 2.5 x 3.5 inch trading card

like a miniature work of art.

Par t ic ipants are asked to bring 15-20 art cards to trade and new faces are always welcome, just come and bring a friend if you like.

Cards should be 2.5 inches x 3.5 inches exactly so they fit in the sleeves that are used for saving base-ball cards.

The theme is open. Bring original cards, not photocopies.

The cards are minia-ture works of art and are meant to be traded, not bought or sold.

Your cards can be painted, col laged, mixed media, photo-graphs, three dimen-sional shapes, or found objects.

It’s up to you where your creativity leads you. Sign the back as you would any art work and add your contact information if you wish.

The Ga l l e r y i s located at 1235 Shop-pers Row (the same building as the Visi-tor Info Centre). For more information call 250-287-2261 or email [email protected]

David ShawSeptember 22, 1939-August 31, 2015

We are profoundly sorry to announce the sudden passing of our father, David Shaw. Dave, as he was known to many, was born on September 22, 1939 in Winnipeg Manitoba. He began his career working for Manitoba Telephones and married his high school sweetheart Elaine in 1961. He moved to Campbell River in 1966 with his wife and young family and

enjoyed a long career with BCTel as a radio technician until retiring in 1996. In his retirement, he continued his passion for serving his community as a long standing member of the Lion’s Club. Dave was happiest with family and enjoyed his time with his children and most of all his grandchildren amusing them all with his humour, countless jokes and legendary hugs.

An avid reader, wise knower of all questions, creative, generous, thoughtful, dependable, loyal, a Bombers fan to the end and everyone’s Dad...

Predeceased by his parents Bert and Molly Shaw, our mother Elaine, and his sister Ruth Shaw Cheroke. He is survived and missed greatly by his daughter Heather Brownhill (Wayne) and children Lindsay and Jeremy (Melissa), his son Allan Shaw (Anne) and children Cameron and Allison and his daughter Susan Shaw-Batt (Kevin) and children Joe and Dave and by his nephew Mike Cheroke (Chris) and niece Caryn Cheroke.

In lieu of flowers, we ask that donations be made to the Cancer Society, The Heart & Stroke Foundation, or the charity of your choice.

Service to be held on Saturday, September 19th at St. Peter’s Anglican Church at 2pm.

A room full of roses to our awesome family and friends for making our 40th Wedding Anniversary such a memorable occasion.

It was a fantastic afternoon and the family BBQ was great. Thank you all so much.

Storm raise banners, drop foesAfter Sunday’s Van-

couver Island Hockey League game against the visiting Comox Valley Glacier Kings, Campbell River Storm head coach Lee Stone did not sound like a guy whose team had just posted a 7-3 win.

“Really sloppy second period. We were disap-pointed with how we came out; I don’t think the third was a heck of a lot better,” Stone said after his team dispatched their league rivals. Stone felt the team wasn’t as sharp as it was in the opener on Friday against Nanaimo but added, “We’ll get there as we work through the kinks. I think we have to be happy scoring 14 goals in the first weekend.”

Expectations are high for the reigning West-ern Canadian champs to repeat as the Vancouver Island Junior Hockey League title holders.

The Storm began the new campaign on Fri-day with an impressive 7-0 victory over the Nanaimo Buccaneers before close to a thou-sand faithful at Rod Brind’Amour Arena. The fans had lots of opportu-nities to cheer.

The Storm struck early and often. Josh Coblenz redirected a point shot from Kenny Britton 1:23 into the first period to open the scoring. Colin Blake made it 2-0, mid-way through the frame when he blasted a shot on his off wing over the shoulder of Buccaneers’ netminder Alex Orth.

Second period markers came from former Kim-berley Dynamiter Alex Rosolowsky and Garrick Heathcote. Rosolowsky’s last goal was against the Campbell River Storm in the Cyclone Taylor Cup final, back in April.

The pressure that Campbell River exerted on Nanaimo was relent-less. The ferocity and tenaciousness of the Storm forecheck led to numerous Bucca-neer turnovers and was instrumental in the vic-tory. The home team played a full game and showed great patience with the puck.

In the third period, Campbell River built on its 4-0 lead with tallies from Brett Witala, Gage Colpron and Braeden Cyra.

N e t m i n d e r M a t t Kostiw was selected the game’s first star after turning aside all 24 Nanaimo shots.

The stor y of the Comox Valley game on Sunday was the chem-istry between a pair of 20-year-olds from Kelowna. Captain Gage Colpron, the VIJHL’s top goal-scorer last season, had a four-point night while former Kelowna Chief Braeden Cyra scored his first VIJHL

hat trick. “We knew he (Cyra)

was a gamer before he came in,” Stone said. “I don’t know if we knew he’d put up this many points this early.”

Colpron’s two goals came just 34 seconds apart. His initial marker, assisted by Marco Divin-cenzo, was scored with 12 seconds left in the first period while the eventual game winner came just 22 seconds into the next frame on a setup from linemate

Colin Blake. The l ine of Col-

pron, Blake and Cyra accounted for 15 points over the two-game set (8 goals, 7 assists). Camp-bell River went 1 for 16 on the power play and were a perfect 16 for 16 on the penalty kill, including a shorthanded goal from Cyra.

As is the custom in Campbell River, the attendance numbers over the weekend were strong with 989 on hand for Friday night’s champi-

onship banner-unveiling ceremony, and a record Sunday afternoon crowd of 726.

The Storm have two more home dates before they head out on the road. On Friday, they host the Oceanside Gen-erals while on Saturday the Saanich Braves come to town. It is not until September 16 that the Storm leave the friendly confines of Strathcona Gardens and head to Colwood to take on the Westshore Wolves.

BE PRECISEGolf is such a great game. One minute you are trying to hit the ball out of sight (down the centre of the fairway out of sight), the next you are trying to make it disappear into a tiny hole from short range, which can be equally di cult, if not more so.

One book I have read and recommend to everyone is Golf is not a Game of Perfect, by Dr Bob Rotella, a leading sports psychologist. He has worked with many professional athletes and covered many sports during his career. After reading the book I went out and shot a course record 66. One chapter highlights the importance of aiming at small, speci c targets. Sounds easy, right? Each lesson I teach, I ask my student what he or she is aiming at. More often than not I hear “down the middle” or “between those two markers”, in each instance the vague target covers 20-30 yards of ground.

What I learnt from that book, and from watching countless great players since, is that they speci cally visualize the ight and roll of the ball, while choosing an EXACT starting point to begin the journey.

Next time you head to the course, or the range, create your own speci c routine. I recommend standing behind your ball, imagining the perfect ight (or roll), while picking out the absolute smallest target possible. After your practice swing and waggle, settle in to your stance and take several more looks at the smallest target you can see. Your mind now has a much more EXACT idea of what you are trying to achieve.

A small target on a drive might be the 150 yard pole in the (exact) centre of the fairway, or a branch high up on a tree far in the distance or a peak in a mountain range.• On an

approach shot it may be the agstick or the edge of a bunker that you plan on ying past, or stopping short of, or again the trunk of a tree (image taken - 17th Hole at Storey Creek - shameless self promotion).

• On a chip shot you should choose where you want the ball to land after it’s ight, and ascertain how much roll will be needed from the exact spot. This spot should be no bigger than your golf ball. In practice, try to land your ball on a coin and then allow it to roll out to the hole.

• For a lengthy putt, aim at a tiny discolouration on the green that will act as the apex of your putt. You are going to roll your ball EXACTLY over this spot.

• For your short putts, aim at a blade of grass at the back of the cup.

I hope this article helps you get your ball in the hole a lot quicker the next time you play!

When you start holing putts from all across the green you can even make sound e ects like Chevy Chase in Caddyshack - funnnnnnananer, funnnnnnananer, funnnnnnananer.

The family team of Linda, Stevi and Steve Nagel links hands while running the red carpet through the finish line of the team competition.

Triathlete tops in age groupFour members of the

Strathcona Triathlon club braved regional for-est fires to participate in the annual Penticton Challenge Triathlon.

Rick Gammie won the men’s 50-54 age division in the full iron distance triathlon (3.8k swim, 180k bike and 42.2k run), completing the course in 12 hours, 19 minutes and 47 seconds to place 32nd overall.

Gammie battled fierce headwinds on the first section of the bike course before heading east to climb the infamous Richter pass. Gammie said “it was worth the pain” after accepting his first place award at the ceremonies at the Okan-agan lakeside venue.

Tanya Loiselle finished the half iron distance (2k swim, 90k bike, 21.1k run) in 8:43:12 on a sim-ilarly tough course, plac-ing 29th in the women’s 40-44 division.

The local club was

rounded out by Steve and Linda Nagle, who formed a team for the

half iron distance along with their daughter, Stevi.

Linda Nagle led off with a 41-minute swim; Steve followed with a 3:37 effort on the bike, and Stevi rounded out the performance with a 1:57:35 half-marathon as Team Nagle collectively shaved 15 minutes off their time from last year.

The Penticton Chal-lenge drew 1,300 ath-letes. Forest fires in the Okanagan threatened the race but did not cause problems on race day.

PROCESS

Rotary Clubs all over the world are known for

their international proj-ects, like providing clean water to remote villages in South America, or working to eradicate polio in every country around the world.

But are you aware of the impact Rotary Clubs have on a local scale?

For 41 years, the Campbell River Rotary TV Auction has been supporting a variety of projects and groups throughout Campbell River. This year’s auc-tion takes place Friday, Nov. 20 and Saturday, Nov. 21.

What was initially conceived as a way to

fund the building of “Our Place” has since expanded to an annual fundraising event that is comprised of a weekend long televised and on-line live auction.

Often people wonder where the proceeds from the auction go. The simple answer is, back into enhancing Campbell River as a community.

The most notable and largest project lately has been the design and creation of the Elk Falls Suspension Bridge. But there have been other large projects from past years including the Maritime Heritage Centre, the Rotary Sea Walk, and the construc-

tion of the Pier, just to name a few. Campbell River Rotary also gives in smaller but equally significant ways. Just this summer a donation was given to Teen Flight to promote the building of an aircraft by local high school aeronautics students – the only pro-gram of its kind in B.C.

As well, smaller dona-tions can have a large impact on non-profit groups.

If you are interested in learning more about Rotary and its involve-ment in Campbell River, ask a Rotarian, or visit the Rotary Club website, www.campbellriverro-tary.org/ for more infor-mation.

Two of the many donations made pos-sible by the Campbell River Rotary TV Auc-tion: $2,000 to the Campbell River Adult Care Society (left) and $13,000 to Teen Flight.

The Immigrant Welcome Cen-tre (Multicul-

tural and Immigrant Services Association of North Vancouver Island) is inviting all members, clients and community partners to join them at their Annual General Meet-ing and Potluck Dinner coming up on Sept. 22.

“For the Immigrant Welcome Centre this

event is a kick off for our fall programs and a chance for board mem-bers, staff, community partners, our members and our clients to get together and get to know each other a bit better over a potluck dinner,” says interim Executive Director Jim Brennan. “We always try to keep the busi-ness portion as brief as possible but one of

the highlights will be presenting our Diversity Ambassador Award.”

The support and par-ticipation of members is also important to the AGM, according to board President Patricia Gagnon.

“As a registered not-for-profit organization, our members play a sig-nificant part in carrying forward our mission. We couldn’t do it with-out them,” she says.

The Immigrant Wel-come Centre provides settlement and inte-gration services for all immigrants, both

English-speaking and non-English-speaking to make communities throughout the North Island region welcoming to all.

Memberships start at just $10 for individuals and will be available at the door. The AGM and potluck dinner takes place Tuesday Sept. 22 at the Robron Centre in Campbell River. Doors open at 5:30 p.m. The meeting takes place from 7 to 8 p.m. To participate, register by calling 250-830-0171 and bring a dish of food to share.

B.C. marks Queen’s record reignBritish Columbia is joining the rest of the

Commonwealth to mark the occasion as Queen Elizabeth II becomes Britain’s longest-reigning monarch this week.

Her Majesty surpasses the record of her great-great-grandmother Queen Victoria on Wednesday, Sept. 9, making her the longest-reigning female monarch in history. Born Elizabeth Alexandra Mary on April 21, 1926, Elizabeth II became head of the Commonwealth on Feb. 6, 1952 and is serving as Queen for her 63rd year.

Lieutenant Governor Judith Guichon, the Queen’s representative in B.C., is hosting a garden party at Government House in Victoria on Saturday, Sept. 12 to celebrate the milestone.

Schoenborn restrictions sought

Prosecutors have applied to have child killer Allan Dwayne Schoenborn declared a “high-risk accused,” which would restrict his escorted day passes from his B.C. psychiatric hospital to those for medical or treatment reasons.

Schoenborn was found not criminally responsible due to mental disorder in February 2010 for the murder of his three children, who were found dead in their mother’s Merritt home in April 2008. B.C. Supreme Court Justice Robert Powers ordered him held indefinitely at Forensic Psychiatric Hospital in Port Coquitlam.
