Terrific Torrington

April fourth of 2014 was a terrific day for Torrington. A warehouse of tires caught on fire and black smoke billowed over the city for much of the day. The stark contrast of disaster overhead to the “business as usual” attitude of the city was mind boggling. Black polluting smoke poured into the air and pebbles of charred rubber rained down. Less than a mile away, school children were outside playing at recess within plain view of the plume of smoke. By definition "terrific", meaning extraordinary, intense, and simultaneously terrifying, is the only word for that day.

Artist’s Statement

Along with the desire to paint the wilderness taking over my own backyard, I find myself drawn to local architecture and infrastructure in Torrington. My interest in painting fluidly and immediately, catching light in shape and color, has been challenged by my inner need and desire for the safety of line. I have been making lines in my paintings for years, via scraping away paint, trying to create linear marks. Through the discipline of watercolor, I have the opportunity to relish and celebrate the finality of the intentional line.
