10 Ways to Avoid Identity Theft

The UAB Police Department has been awarded re-accreditation from the Commission on Accreditation for Law Enforcement Agencies (CALEA), an international law-enforcement accreditation program that sets the standards for police departments across the United States and Canada. UAB is one of only six police departments in Alabama accredited by CALEA and one of 47 university police departments nationwide accredited by the organization.

The UAB Police Department was the first university and one of 15 agencies to participate in CALEA’s BETA Reaccreditation Model; a new onsite process adopted at the July 2011 conference in Cincinnati, Ohio. The BETA process involved a rigorous examination and review of the agency’s policies related to the 464 CALEA standards.

“Being accredited supplies our agency with the tools needed to strategically plan and successfully manage the highly professional men and women of the UAB Police Department,” says UAB Police Chief Anthony Purcell. “Accreditation amplifies trust and confidence among our members and the community we serve.”

Guard your purse or wallet. Never put either one down unless your hand is connected to it. Limit the number of checks and debit/credit cards you carry to only what you will actually need. Check credit card and bank statements carefully for unauthorized charges. Close credit card accounts you don’t use on a regular basis. Shred all documents containing personal information especially pre-approved credit card offers – with a cross-cut shredder.

Before revealing any identifying information, ask how it will be used and secured and whether it will be shared with others. Order copies of your free credit reports from the three credit bureaus at least once a year and check them carefully for accuracy. Do not place passwords on credit card, bank and phone accounts. Avoid using easily available information such as mother’s maiden name, birth date, phone number, etc. Instead use an eight-character combination of letters and numbers. Use a locked mailbox or a post office box to send/receive mail. Keep your Social Security card in a secure place and give out the number only when necessary. Ask to use other identifiers whenever possible.

The UAB Campus Watcher newsletter is available at several locations around the UAB campus. If you would like to obtain a copy or have questions or comments, please contact Tonya Webb at 934-2409.
