Dangers of Such Unions

In the Encyclical Mortalium Animos, Pope Pius XI condemned the ecumenical initiatives betweenbelievers and unbelievers because they are “founded as they are on that false opinion which considers allreligions to be more or less good and praiseworthy.” Pope Pius XI warned Catholics that beneath the rhetoric of unity there was a serious danger. St. John forbade interaction with heretics: “If any man come

to you andbring not this doctrine, receive him not into the house nor say

to him: Godspeed you.” (2 John 10).

Scripture on Worship with Non-Catholics

“[B]ear not the yoke together with unbelievers; for what participation hath justice with injustice? Or what fellowship hath light with darkness? And what concord hath Christ with Belial? Or what part hath the faithful with the unbelievers? or what agreement hath the temple of God with idols? For ye are the temple of the living God.“ (2 Corinthians 6:14).

"[A] man who is a heretic, after the first and second admonition, avoid; knowing that he that is such a one is subverted, and sins, being condemned by his own judgment.” (Titus 3:10).

“ We charge you, brethren, in the name of Our Lord Jesus Christ, that you withdraw yourselves from every brother walking disorderly, and not according to the tradition which they have received from us“. (2 Thessalonians 3:6, my emphasis).

Suggestions for Catholic-Noncatholic Unions

1. “The bond of union should never be neutrality or the conciliation of interests and principles essentially opposed, such as are the interests and principles of Catholics and Liberals [or other heretics].”

“Much less could we accord to the Liberal [or heretical] group, with whom a temporary and accidental alliance is formed, the honor of enrolling ourselves under its banner.”

“We must never consider this alliance constant and normal.”
