In a mandated emergency, the CFIA is legislated to take the lead role in responding to food safety, animal health and plant health emergencies or any other emergency that falls within its mandate.

In a non-mandated emergency, the CFIA provides support to the provinces and other federal departments in responding to natural disasters (e.g., severe storm, tornado or flood) or other public welfare emergencies.

Working GroupsWorking Groups• Formed from personnel who had an interest and

some experience in disease control • These groups parallel the activities that would be

expected during a foreign animal disease response.

• The groups have been tasked with identifying and prioritizing what procedures need to be developed or fleshed out regarding the subject matter of their working groups. The procedures that have or will be developed are not necessarily restricted to FAD's.

• In addition to developing these procedures, the groups serve to develop technical specialists to assist in and to guide disease response.
