The must have guide to the most colourful waterways and community festival in London's Little Venice during the May Day Bank Holiday weekend 5th - 7th May

Welcome to Canalway Cavalcade 2012 a
unique waterways and community festival
which has been taking place at Little
Venice since 1983.
Organised by The Inland Waterways Association (IWA)
volunteers this festival weekend heralds the start of a
summer of special celebrations in 2012. This year’s
Cavalcade theme will reflect the joyous events of the
Queen’s Diamond Jubilee Year. Many of the 150 boats
attending Cavalcade will be participating in the historic
Queen’s Diamond Jubilee Pageant on the River
Thames in June. Some have travelled from the furthest
reaches of the waterways system in Britain —a spidery
network of nearly 3000 miles—to gather here in a
glorious array of colour in the heart of London.
Whether you’ve travelled to Cavalcade from near or far,
are a boater, a resident or a visitor you’ll find it’s packed
with fun stuff for everyone from 2 to 102. We’ve got kids’
activities, from floating on water to Punch and Judy,
competitions, food and trade stalls, music, real ale, and
lots, lots more. We hope you will want to find out more
about our wonderful waterways and become a fan
during this exciting festival—so have a great time!
The IWA campaigns for the use, maintenance and
restoration of Britain’s inland waterways. It believes that
canals and rivers are everyone’s to enjoy and it works
to preserve the heritage and ecology of the system for
public benefit. If you’d like to find out more about the
work of the IWA, our waterway heritage, or how you can
join in and help to restore a waterway, go to the IWA
marquee on Warwick Crescent at this event, or visit the
website www.waterways.org.uk, phone our membership
hotline: 01494 783453 or write to us at :

Throughout the weekend we have a variety of entertainments for you. Many of the
performances are given at a reduced fee in order to maximise the money we raise
for the causes we support.
Graham Nunn and The Church Army welcome visitors, children or adults, for a chat on
board the boat Theo moored alongside the Stone Wharf. They will also be leading the
service at 10:00 on Sunday and organising various activities for children near Theo.
There will also be music—of all genres—being played around the site: by the Horse Bridge,
on the pontoon bandstand in the Pool and on the Stone Wharf.
We have a whole range of children’s activities, including games, a treasure hunt and craft
activities. Youngsters can try kayaking and learn water safety on the canal beside the
Paddington Towpath, near Bishop’s Bridge, thanks to the Pirate Club of the Pirate Castle
in Camden. Life jackets and full instruction will be provided. You can also go on board their
new boat Pirate Prince and learn more about the activities at the Pirate Castle. In
Rembrandt Gardens, throughout the Festival there’ll be performances of Punch and Judy
and on Sunday, at 15:00, if you go down to Rembrandt Gardens you’ll be sure to find a
Teddy Bears’ Picnic. Bubble of Fun, walking on water, is located on the other side of the
canal, on the Paddington Towpath, between the two statues.
Elsdale II Floating Classroom is back with us again this year and will be showing children
how to do salt dough modelling and other crafts, from 14:30—17:00 on Saturday and
11:00—17:00 on Sunday and Monday.
Beauchamp Floating Classroom will also be keeping the children amused with their
Creepy Crawlies Show and Recycled Artwork workshops
You can collect more information about these activities from our Information Points: in
the Waterspace Office on the North Towpath, in the IWA marquee on Warwick Crescent,
on the boat Jena moored alongside the Paddington Towpath or at the work camp
compound on the Stone Wharf. To find these please refer to the Site Plan on pages 10-11.
In addition, during the Festival, the Puppet Theatre Barge will be performing their Puppet
Show ‘The Town Mouse and the Country Mouse’ at 11:00 and 15:00 on Saturday, and at
15:00 other days, aboard the barge May Brent on the North Towpath. Advance booking
recommended: telephone 020 7249 6876, mobile 07836 202745, email
[email protected] or via their website www.puppetbarge.com/booking.
Prices: Children and concessions £8.50, adults £10. Credit and debit cards accepted.

Towpath WalksIf Cavalcade has excited your interest in London’s canals then you might want to explore further.
Inland Waterways Association (IWA) volunteer guides support The IWA Towpath Walks Society,
which arranges a regular series of guided walks along the city’s canals in association with London
Walks.
They last just over two hours and take place on two Sunday afternoons each month. The walks start
and finish at a tube or DLR station and cost £8 per person, with concessions £6. You can even join
one during the Festival Sunday which leaves Kensal Green Cemetery at 2:30 pm. Or, if you’d like to
get closer to the new Olympic stadium, turn up at Bromley by Bow tube station on Sunday 20th May
at 2:30 pm.
The walks have been going since 1977 and have so far raised over £24,000 towards the IWA’s work.
The guides give their services free and the IWA benefits financially.
