A sophisticated renovation is transforming the Canberra Southern Cross Yacht Club into a premium entertainment and function venue.

With the Yacht Club now gaming machine-free, renovations are well underway creating another intimate private dining and function space called The Wardroom, which takes its name from the naval officers’ mess-cabin.

Yacht Club General Manager Simon Plummer said The Wardroom would seat up to 60 people and could be used for a variety of meetings, dining, functions and special events.

This is in addition to the marquee, which can cater for functions of up to 100 people.

“Our function rooms are always in high demand for private dining and celebrations such as birthdays and anniversaries,” Mr Plummer said.

“This new room means we can better service our members’ needs, which is very pleasing and exciting.”

In addition, a seamless indoor-outdoor flow is being created within the club with upgraded furnishings and a bi-fold door opening to the balcony.

“We have such a great location with amazing views so we really wanted to bring the outdoors in,” Mr Plummer said.

Munns Sly Moore Architects Director Conrad Moore said he wanted to create an intimate yet flexible space in The Wardroom, with a design that responded to a sailing and yachting theme.

“The Wardroom incorporates timber decking ceiling panels and a window seat, as well as sail upholstered wall panels and timber joinery complementing the overall theme,” he said.

The renovations will be completed in time for Foundation Day, on Sunday September 27.

Foundation Day celebrations feature a day of music, food and family fun on the Sunday of the Family and Community Day long weekend. We hope to see you there to be part of the occasion.

An entry form to win great prizes, including an $8,000 Aussie Holiday and a trip for two to Hamilton Island is on page 4.

patrons’ expectations of having a place to relax and enjoy themselves in a vibrant yet sophisticated space.

“The warm ambience of our new décor will help patrons relax and enjoy our hospitality” he said.

Split Watermelon Design created the space and interior designer Joanne Yeomans said the concept centred on natural themes inspired by Tuggeranong’s proximity to mountains and rivers.

“We translated that use of natural materials and textures and pattern to give a warm, contemporary and country feel,” she said.

“We added layers of warmth to a space that was flat before.”

Mr Sorrentino said he was delighted with the new services and promotions now in place to provide an even greater level of attention to Members.

RENOVATION CELEBRATIONGU$’s Big Prize Wheel promotion celebrates Tuggeranong’s recently completed renovations.

We’re extending a warm invitation to members and guests to visit and experience the freshly renovated venue.

To kick off the celebrations members can win plenty in our ‘GU$’s Prize Wheel’ promotion which runs every day in September with two chances to spin and win per day. The major prize is $10,000 cash which must be won at least once during the promotion period. Entry to the promotion is through swiping your card on entry, with extra entries gained playing the gaming machines and purchasing food and beverages.

Inspired by Canberra’s connection to the outdoors, the refurbishment offers a more modern and open layout with superior comfort for members.

TUGGERANONG FRENCH NIGHTEach aspect of a French speciality has a root, origin, tradition, and cult attached to it by the French. This is because of the sheer diversity of excellent products and related recipes available all over France.

The Loire Valley known as “the Garden of France” is a fertile place where a rich farmland stretches on both sides of the beautiful Loire River. Even today all the best restaurants in Paris and close by get their fresh vegetables, mushrooms, prunes, pears and apples from this area.

Lake and freshwater river fish take pride of place in dishes. Veggies thrive in the sandy soils around the Loire River.

The Loire region is the birthplace of the shredded potted meat, the Rillette, (a close cousin to pate) that is now enjoyed all over world. In the Loire, Rillette is prepared with not only boar but also duck, goose, rabbit and even fish such as tuna.

The region became the favourite residence of French Kings and Queens from the middle ages to the Renaissance. its castles, hunting lodges and manor

houses were gradually converted into lavish pleasure palaces were some of the greatest French chefs worked ad developed the unique cuisine of the area.

The Loire Valley hosts some of the best dry white wines in France. Sancerre and Pouilly Fumé are among the best.

For our dinner I have taken my inspiration from the Jardins du Château de Villandry, probably the most famous vegetable garden in the world. It is a brilliant re-creation of the Renaissance gardens engraved in the 16th century by Jacques Androuet de Cerceau.

I hope you can join us for this wonderful night with six course dinner menu celebrating the Loire Valley at Peppercress.

HERE COMES THE SUN! Your Club is pleased to announce we will be reducing our carbon footprint with the installation of solar panels across our venues.

This initiative will see the Club produce enough electricity to power 73 houses each year.

The first stage of the program will see 100kW solar PV systems installed at the Woden and Jamison venues, while in the New Year the plan is to introduce a further 100kW solar PV system at Tuggeranong and a 50kW solar PV system at the Yacht Club.

The 100kW systems, made up of 400 Yingli Solar PV panels, will each produce about 149,000kW hours of power and reduce the Club’s carbon emissions by 130 tons in the first year.

The 50kW system, made up of 200 solar panels, will produce about 75,000kW hours of power and reduce carbon emissions by 65 tons in year one.

The Club has partnered with Yingli Solar, one of the world’s leading solar panel manufacturers, and Yass-based solar installation company Ygrene Energy.

Ygrene Energy Managing Director Tim Davaris said the Southern Cross Club was an industry leader in terms of installing solar panels.

“It’s great to see the initiative taken by the CSCC, not only in reducing emissions but also in planning for its future energy requirements,” he said.

“CSCC is leading the way and we hope more large businesses in the ACT will follow suit.”

Yingli Solar is a world leader in solar panel manufacturing with more than 50 million panels installed globally.

Yingli Green Energy Australia Managing Director Daman Cole said climate change was the most important environmental issue today.

“Businesses such as Canberra Southern Cross Club are looking to solar power not only to better manage their electricity costs but also to minimise their carbon footprint,” he said.

To celebrate our environmentally friendly move, in November we’ll be offering members the chance to win their own fully installed 3kW home solar system valued at almost $6000 thanks to Yingli Solar and Ygrene Energy.

Check in your local venues or on our website in early November for details on how to enter.
