Cienfuegos, meet members of the local communities to discuss their lives and cultural

traditions. Meet face-to-face with community leaders, local residents, artists and

intellectuals to discuss Cuba today and explore local landmarks that are significant to

Cuba’s cultural heritage.

Highlights• Meet with members of a local musical group in Cienfuegos and learn about their

careers as musicians.

• Enjoy lively interactions at a local Senior Center.

• Learn about conservation and enjoy lunch at a beachfront private enterprise.

Activity Rating: Active — Walking up to two miles a day with some walking on uneven

Day 1: Friday, Dec. 4 Arrival in Miami / Orientation / Welcome Dinner

Hotel check-in at 4 p.m., followed by Orientation and Welcome Dinner.

Day 2: Saturday, Dec. 5 Fly to Santa Clara / Coach to Cienfuegos/ Main

Square / Children’s Dance Company

Arrive in Cienfuegos, explore the city and walk through Plaza Jose Marti,

the main square. Talk about the square’s history while you observe local

life amid beautiful buildings like the Tomas Terry Theater. People-to-

People Connection: Meet a youth dance group and discuss their lives.

Day 3: Sunday, Dec. 6 Moré Arts School / Trinidad / Casa Particular

Meet with faculty and students to discuss life at the Benny Moré Art

School, named for a famous Cuban singer and native of Cienfuegos

province. Then, depart on a full-day excursion to Trinidad, founded

in 1514 and the crown jewel of colonial Cuban cities. After lunch in

a paladar, walk to Plaza Mayor to explore the town's historic and

architectural landmarks. People-to-People Connection: Enjoy an

encounter with the owners of a free-enterprise B&B. Learn about the

relatively new development of independent business in Cuba while

hearing the owners’ story and how they transformed their home into a

"casa particular." Return to Cienfuegos for dinner.

Day 4: Monday, Dec. 7 Farmers Market/ Santa Clara Field Trip / Senior Center / Che Guevara Memorial / Musical Group

At a local farmers market, talk with farmers about their produce.

Depart on a full-day field trip to Santa Clara, capital of the Villa Clara

region. People-to-People Connection: Interact with a vivacious group

of senior citizens who share their leisure activities and discuss how

some Cubans enjoy retirement. After lunch at a restaurant, visit the

Che Guevara Memorial and Mausoleum, home to historical displays of

events from the influential revolutionary's life. Return to Cienfuegos

and stroll the main shopping street to learn the differences between

Ration, Cuban Pesos and CUC stores. Explore the complexity of the

two-currency system and talk with Cubans and workers who shop at

these stores. People-to-People Connection: Enjoy a performance by a

Cienfuegos musical group and discuss their careers and daily life.

Day 5: Tuesday, Dec. 8 Depart Cienfuegos / Bay of Pigs /Havana

En route to Havana stop at the Zapata Swamp to study conservation in

Cuba. Enjoy lunch at a seaside restaurant, then continue to Playa Giron,

the small coastal village where CIA-trained Cuban exiles and Cuban

rebel forces clashed in 1961. Explore the Bay of Pigs Museum to get the

Cuban perspective of the infamous invasion and to see artifacts from

the failed mission. Enjoy a welcome cocktail at the Hotel Nacional, then

explore this beautifully preserved national monument. In the hotel's

Hall of Fame, enjoy photos of and folklore about famous past guests:

Frank Sinatra, Marilyn Monroe, Meyer Lansky and others.

Day 6: Wednesday, Dec. 9 Presentation and Exploration of History and

Architecture of Old Havana / Interactions with Artists / English Language Bookstore

Enjoy a presentation by a local architect involved with the government-

funded restoration project of Old Havana. Next, discover Plaza de la

Catedral and Plaza Vieja. Each square has its own unique features.

People-to-People Connection: Meet with members of a graphic arts

cooperative and discuss what they do. Lunch and dinner are on your

own to explore local cuisine. Walk through Plaza de Armas and Plaza

de San Francisco de Asis. People-to-People Connection: Experience

Havana’s first English bookstore and talk with Cuban intellectuals.

Day 7: Thursday, Dec. 10 Photo Walk of Old Havana / Lunch in Paladar and Talk

With Owner / Dance Company / A Capella Chorale

Enjoy a vividly colorful and textural photo walk with Carl Studna

traversing the historical streets of Old Havana. Enjoy lunch in a paladar

and hear from the owner about how he operates and sources his

ingredients. People-to-People Connection: Observe a rehearsal by a

modern dance group then converse with the dancers. People-to-People

Connection: Enjoy a performance by a women’s a capella chorale.

Discuss life for women today in Cuba, then have dinner in a paladar.

Day 8: Friday, Dec. 11 Role of Religion / Fine Arts Museum / Finca La Vigia

Today’s presentation explores the role of religion on Cuban identity.

Discover the Fine Arts Museum of Havana and delve into the stories

behind each work and its artist. After a light lunch in a paladar, drive

to Finca La Vigia, the Hemingway Farm. This beautiful property hosts

the house where the author lived with his third wife, Mary, for over 30

years. See the home and Hemingway’s belongings as he left them. Walk

the grounds to his writing studio, swimming pool and beloved fishing

boat, Pilar. Dine at a local favorite: El Aljibe, famous for its roast chicken.

Day 9: Saturday, Dec. 12 Free Enterprise Artisan Market / Departure to Miami

Transfer to the Havana Airport for the flight to Miami. Dinner at the

airport is on your own. Upon arrival in Miami, clear U.S. Customs and

Immigration, then board the hotel shuttle and check in.

Day10: Sunday, Dec. 13 Independent Departure From Miami
