The course provides clinical information and experience to prepare therapists to work safely and confidently with clients who have had or are currently in treatment for cancer. Comfort-orientated massage or touch can be offered to people with cancer, regardless of the stage of their illness. The purpose of this course is to train massage therapists in the fundamentals of oncology massage. The experience gained from this training will create and enhance confidence in those therapists working with people living with cancer.

Cancer Support Sanctuary LARCC is proud to announce that we

will be hosting Gayle Mac Donald, author of "Medicine

Hands Massage Therapy for People with Cancer" at the

Cancer Support Sanctuary LARCC in Multyfarnham in July

2015.

This three-day course is designed for those trained to

diploma level in Massage Therapy. The course provides

clinical information and experience to prepare therapists to

work safely and confidently with clients who have had or

are currently in treatment for cancer.

Comfort-orientated massage or touch can be offered to

people with cancer, regardless of the stage of their illness.

The purpose of this course is to train massage therapists in

About the trainer:

Gayle MacDonald MS LMT, has worked with cancer patients at

Oregon Health Sciences University, Portland, Oregon for 17 years.

She has also supervised massage therapists at the oncology unit,

chemotherapy and radiotherapy and bone marrow transplant unit.

She is the author of “Medicine Hands: Massage Therapy for People

with Cancer” and “Massage for the Hospital Patient and Medically

Frail Client”.

Course description:

Comfort-oriented massage or touch can be safely administered to

cancer patients regardless of the stage of their condition. The

purpose of this class is to present information and provide

experience for massage therapists who wish to work with clients

who have been living with cancer. The culminating activity of the

class will be to give a relaxation massage to someone with a history

of cancer.

Objectives:

1. To increase participants’ comfort level with regard to

massaging people with cancer

2. To introduce participants to the basics of metastatic

process

3. To present restrictions regarding massage for people who

have undergone surgery, radiation or chemotherapy

4. To provide supervised, hands-on practice

5. To model and practice the gathering of health history from

the person affected by cancer

6. Analysis of case histories

Friday 9am – 6pm - registration from 8.30am

Saturday 9am – 6pm

Sunday 9am – 6pm

Course Hours

The course is 24 hours long over

three days. In order to receive a

certificate of completion,

participants must attend all 24

hours. In the case of an emergency

that prevents the participant from

being in attendance for up to 2

hours, the instructor, at her

prerogative, can assign make-up

work that approximates the missed

material.

Cancer Care Massage

Massage Therapy for People Living with Cancer Foundation Course for Professional Massage Therapists

Entry requirements: Participants must hold a recognised qualification in

massage, anatomy and physiology. The course may also be beneficial for

nurses working in this sector.

Required pre-reading: available following booking

Recommended books:

MacDonald Gayle. “Medicine Hands: Massage Therapy for People with

Cancer,” 2nd Ed. Findhorn Press, 2007

Required materials: Plinth cover, flat sheet (single bed size), light weight

blanket or large towel, 2 pillows, massage lotion in pump or squeeze bottle,

journaling materials, and note taking materials, massage medium, hand

sanitizer, non-fragrant tissues and non-fragrant cleansing wipes.

Evaluation:

1. Pre and post-class self evaluation of comfort level with massaging

people with cancer.

2. Demonstration of ability to perform comfort-oriented massage on a

client with cancer or recovering from it.

3. 10 item exit quiz that reviews highlights from the curriculum.

There is a Tuc shop at the venue. Tea/ coffee/ biscuits will be provided for

morning and afternoon tea breaks. Lunch will be at participant’s own expense.

There is limited ensuite accommodation available on the premises at LARCC

with a special price for Bed & Continental Breakfast - €45.00 PPS or €55.00

single occupancy rate.
