Oesophagealcanceristheeighthmostcommoncanceroverall.In2012,worldwide,thereareestimatedtohavebeen456000newcases(3.2%ofallincidencecancercases).Itisthesixthmostcommoncauseofdeathfromcancer,withanestimated400000deathsin2012(4.9%ofallcancerdeaths).Thesefiguresincludebothadenocarcinomaandsquamouscellcarcinomasubtypes.About80%ofcasesworldwideoccurinlessdevelopedregions.Oesophagealcancerincidenceratesworldwideinmenaremorethandoublethoseinwomen(withamale-to-femaleratioof2.4:1).Inbothsexes,incidencevariesbyafactorofmorethan20acrosstheregionsoftheworld,with2012incidencerates(per100000population)rangingfrom0.8casesinwesternAfricato17.0casesineasternAsiainmen,andfrom0.2casesinMicronesia/Polynesiato7.8casesineasternAfricainwomen.

Canceroftheoesophagushasverypoorsurvival(withanoverallratioofmortalitytoincidenceof0.88),andoesophagealcancermortalitycloselyfollowsthegeographicalpatternsforincidence,withthehighest2012mortalityrates(per100000population)occurringineasternAsia(14.1deaths)andsouthernAfrica(12.8deaths)inmen,andineasternAfrica(7.3deaths)andsouthernAfrica(6.2deaths)inwomen.
