It was a short time after my wife’s emergency sur- gery on Halloween that we found out that she had ovarian cancer. The shock was overwhelming. As we drove home from the doctor’s office, she asked if I was OK, at which point I broke into tears and uttered “no” as best that I could through my sobbing. Upon our arrival home I needed some time to gath- er my composure and assemble my thoughts. I was absolutely lost. It was near dusk, and I retreated to the yard where I could be alone and the darkness would mask my emotional state. I quickly found myself in the yard with rake in hand under a tree that had just shed its leaves, signifying a change of season. Through the stream of tears and on-setting darkness it was hard to complete my task. Overcome with a flood of emotions including fear, love and anger, my thoughts were scattered. 2008 ANNUAL REPORT2008 Financial Information

Expenses

2008 was anexceptionallybusy year forCancer Servicesof NortheastIndiana, fullwith providingclient services

and simultaneously planning for a new building and move.In October the staff completed the move to a larger, better-located facility on Mutual Drive. With seven rooms for sup-port groups, a larger warehouse and loading dock as wellas increased parking the agency is also more convenient forall clients traveling to treatment and doctor visits. This proj-ect was made possible by the successful completion of acapital campaign. Short-term financing was utilized duringthe construction phase so that there will be no mortgageonce all capital campaign pledges have been paid.

Like many organizations and individuals, CancerServices has felt the pressures of the current economicclimate. Last year a record number of clients, more than1,600, requested and received health supplies and finan-cial assistance for cancer-related costs, totaling nearly$196,000. In order to sustain the programs and services

so needed and valued in our community, the staff andboard worked hard to maintain the high level of stew-ardship that CSNI has become known for. The 2009budget is a 1.9% increase over 2008, including modestincreases for operating a significantly larger facility.

Again, like other organizations, Cancer Services experi-enced unrealized losses in investment accounts, which willdecrease the earnings income available to support operat-ing costs. And while our cash reserves are not as high asthe board would like them to be, we expect to maintainstaffing levels and client services in 2009.

The board is actively engaged in strategic planning toincrease revenue by gaining funders from outside of AllenCounty as well as increasing the number of individualdonors supporting CSNI. These strategies are designed tosupplement the core support that foundations and corpo-rations provide.

The board and staff of Cancer Services are committedto the mission that no one has to walk the cancer journeyalone. We are also committed to serving our donors byhonoring their trust with the highest level of stewardship.

We welcome your questions and invite you to visit atany time to see what a difference your support makes tofamilies in our community.
