Coming Back to Mass!
Absence makes the heart grow fonder. This phrase is frequently used in reference to a relationship, most often a romantic relationship, where there is time of separation. I believe this phrase can apply to our relationship to the Lord in the Mass as well. People are longing to get back to Mass. I've heard it again and again, and that's a really good thing!
As I mentioned before, the bishop has been in regular contact with the priests during the pandemic. I got the sense that he sees the return to public Mass in the Diocese of Baton Rouge as a good thing, but also it's bittersweet. The bitter side of our coming back is that we're not coming back to normal. That will be di cult for many of us to take, especially as we will be limited in our Mass attendance for the foreseeable future.
Trust me, there are few people who get so happy about seeing a large crowd at Mass like your pastor. I frequently make the point when our attendance is high. It will be di cult to accept that "max capacity" is about 100 people at a Sunday Mass. That's a big adjustment!
One good thing that has come out of the pandemic: I didn't realize who has been watching our livestream Masses. A friend in New Orleans called me the other day to thank me for making available a Sunday Mass online. For those who have attended at least one of our Masses online, you shared your prayer time with more people than our cluster crowd. I appreciate that.
So, I'm looking forward for the chance to celebrate public Mass again. I look forward to being able to hear a live congregation respond for the prayers. I look forward to seeing my parish family face-to-face. I didn't become a priest to stay in my rectory all day long. I became a priest to share my life with a family. I know it will be bittersweet to come back to Mass in a limited way, but I'm still happy that we're taking this step forward.
Peace, Fr. Matthew
