STORY OF MONTEPULCIANOThe town of Montepulciano has retained the characteristic features of its medieval origins to this day. The town centre emerged as a "Pearl of the 16th Century" on a hill between the Val di Chiana and the Val d'Orcia.

The exact origin of the name is not known for certain. In a document from 714 a "Castello Politiano" is mentioned. From then on "Mons Policianus" was the certain forerunner of today's Montepulciano. the indipendent, but military weak community protected itself for about 700years by alternating alliance with its mighty Tuscan neighbours, Florence and Siena until in 1511 the Policians formed an alliance with the Florentine Republic and subjected themselves to the rule of the Medicis.

In the Middle Ages various noble families tried, by means of internal struggles, to sleize the throne of Montepulciano. Family prestige then was very important and it was almost as itthere was a competition to produce the most magnificent public and private buildings to rival even Siena or Florence. In 1808 Napolen I put Montepulciano under Siena administration, which continued during Italy's history as a kingdom and is still the case today as a republic.

The district of Montepulciano has some 14000 inhabitants and seven towns. The actual town called Montepulciano, is the administrative seat of the area, and has 5000 inhabitants. In order to protect the particular characteristics of the area, Montepulciano decided some time ago to avoid industrial development. Instead the agriculture, tourism and service sectors were developed. Throughout the Montepulciano district the unspoiled, natural ambience typical of the Tuscan hills can still be found.

ABOUT USIn the middle of the 70's, individual wine connoisseurs in the Zurich region began to import their house wine from Montepulciano on an annual basis. In time, this circle of enthusiasts grew and the desire for our own vineyard took shape in our hearts and minds. In 1987, an existing vineyard came up for sale, much to the delight of a dozen Swiss enthusiast who did not hesitate to seize this wonderful and unique opportunity. Our enthusiasm for the Vino Nobile and our long-term plans for the future persuaded the vender to give us the contract. Canneto AG was founded in Zurich and took over the Azienda Agricola Canneto vineyard as its subsidiary

After obtaining the wine merchants' patent we could supply partners and friends with our "own" Vino Nobile di Montepulciano. Our circle of customers gradually expanded to include our partners' friends and acquaintances. By using local, professional wine experts combined with the sales and marketing efforts of the partners, we try to obtain the best possible quality. At the same time we keep the price of our products reasonable. The enthusiasm of the amateurs and the passion for our Canneto is more alive than ever!

AZIENDA AGRICOLA CANNETOThe Canneto vineyard lies on the western slopes of Montepulciano, near the wonderful church of Madonna di San Biagio, and has a long tradition of wine making. Since the purchase the current Swiss owners have restored the buildings with great respect for the rich wine growing tradition. A new wine cellar has been built, new machinery and equipment installed and the vines and olive trees have been pruned and when necessary replaced. The vines are grown on moderately heavy, pebbly mar soil between 350 and 400 metres above sea level. The vines are raised on predominantly south west facing slopes in a horizontal spurred cordon system. A further four hectares of land is devoted to the cultivation of olives extra virgin olive oil

REPORT OF 2008 VINTAGE

The winter was not particularly cold, with slightly below average rainfall, which contributed towards slightly earlier than "normal" budbreak. From the last ten days of May, however, a series of bad weather conditions brought rain almost every day alternating with short clear periods, through to mid-June. This caused a slowing of the foliage development, and consequent prolongation of the flowering stage. From mid-June the weather improved considerably and temperatures rose to above average level for this season. As often happens in great vintage years, towards the end of July, at the beginning of veraison, the plants were under moderate stress from lack of water which caused a halt in bud development. The continuing absence of rain slowed down the ripening of the grapes slightly in the month of august. When the temperatures rose again in mid-September the ripening process accelerated and by the first ten days of October the grapes were perfectly ripe. The weather was fine throughout the harvesting period, from the last week of September to the first week of October. The vintage year of 2008 is expected to produce wines with good ageing prospect, not excessively rich in extract, excellent balance in the flavour and interesting aromas. Wines, therefore, whose most significant features will be balance and elegance.

REPORT OF 2007 VINTAGE

A recorded increase of 3-4° in the maximum temperatures of late March and April meant budbreak took place about 15 days earlier than a “normal” year. The situation continued throughout the flowering phase and was largely confirmed in the fruit-setting phase. The Sangiovese vines developed good foliage in all phases. Rain in May and June averted the problem of drought-related stress and the grapes (comparable in quantity to 2006) did not suffer much from the higher temperatures. In June a decrease in temperatures caused a partial slowing of the foliage development but balance was restored with the above average temperatures recorded in July. The high temperatures and lack of rainfall caused early veraison, and a slight delay in ripening in August. 2007 experienced average pathogen attacks and plant diseases were kept well under control. The perfectly ripe and healthy grapes were picked in good weather between 15th – 20th September and the first week of October, and therefore not early as was expected due to the precocious results in the preceding months. The heat of 2007 definitely affected the Sangiovese grapes, making specific agronomical procedures necessary in the vineyard to avert problems of over -ripening and loss of aromas. The development of technological parameters was within the norm with a rather high sugar content and lover total acidity than the previous year, and excellent phenolic ripeness levels. The first test carried out at the end of malolactic fermentation showed a substantial alcohol content, total acidity within the norm and very high net dry extract, total polyphenols and colour intensity. These figures were confirmed on tasting the product which is concentrated and soft on the palate.

REPORT OF 2006 VINTAGE

Let's take more detailed look at the progress in the vineyards during the course of the growing year. After plenty of rain in autumn and winter, temperatures rose in late March and budbreak took place between 5th and 15th April. Temperatures in April and May favoured steady bud growth and early flowering, which began in the Sangiovese vineyards on 25 th-27th May. During this delicate phenological phase, the temperature dropped sharply on 31st May and remained below average for about ten days. This drastically slowed the development of foliage and flowering only ended in mid-June when the temperature rose again. From then on until the end of the first week of August the weather was fine with little rain and the vines benefited from the water reserves in the soil, developing abundant foliage. At the moment of veraison the level of water was low enough to end foliage development. This took place between 5th and 20th August and at this point the vineyards showed two significant requirements for good ripening of the fruit: the buds were no longer growing and the ample leaf surface placed photosynthesis at the complete disposal of the ripening bunches of grapes. While the grapes were changing colour in mid-August, the weather was often cloudy and there were some short rain showers. At the end of August temperatures rose again and 15 beautiful hot days followed with extreme day and night temperature variation which considerably helped accelerate the ripening process and make up for the delay during the flowering stage. The grapes therefore rapidly reached technological maturity (in sugar/acidity ratio). In mid-September the weather was back to normal for the season, temperatures dropped and it rained between the 14th and 16th of September. This rain plumped up the grapes that had been withered by the heat of the previous day. Once again there was no cause for worry as this rain rebalanced the composition of the grapes. However the sporadic morning mists in the next few days were a cause for alarm but fortunately they disappeared after a few days, and favourable weather for ripening returned. As has often been the case in recent years, the harvest was a race against time: the Sangiovese harvest was postponed as long as possible to allow the best possible phenolic ripening, although it was important to harvest before the autumn rains began. The harvest began around 20th September and ended with the Sangiovese on 10 th October. To conclude, the grapes showed excellent quality: optimum technological and therefore a good skin to fruit ratio. The resulting wines show robust structure, high alcohol and polyphenol content and good acidity: at the moment they appear to be very typical with good ageing prospects.

REPORT OF 2005 VINTAGE

In late March the long, snowy winter changed, in just a few days, into spring with a rapid rise in temperatures, and budbreak began in April. The month of May was quite dry and warm causing a decisive explosion of foliage and the buds rapidly entered the flowering phase; by early June all the vineyards were fully in flower.June was a pleasantly warm month with a few sporadic rainstorms, ensuring normal growth of shoots and bunches. July was hot with a few brief rain showers here and there, while the weather suddenly changed at the end oh the month when veraison began. In August the weather was very variable from one area to another, alternating between sunny days and heavy downpours: in some areas it did not rain at all, creating a paradoxical situation in which some vines were suffering from drought while others showed a delay in ripening due to the rain. However in spite of this worryingly temperamental weather the early September analysis of the grapes reassured us with similar figures to those from September 10th 2004, according to which ripening took place about ten days earlier than the previous year. In mid-September when the Merlot harvest was being planned, the weather changed again with a series of heavy downpours which suddenly halted ripening, thus cancelling the ten day ripening headstart the vineyards showed compared to 2004. Subsequently the weather improved again and remained sunny until the end of the harvest, with lingering morning mists which favoured the development of botrytis here and there. 2005 was thus characterised by very unpredictable weather from budbreak until the last day of harvesting, obliging us to carry out countless leaf and bunch thinning procedures and thorough selection of the grapes in the vineyard before harvesting and in the callar. To conclude, the quality of the grapes used for the wine is good despite the considerable effort involved and losses in quantity. The quality of the 2005 wines is generally good with various peaks of excellence from the vineyards unaffected by the adverse weather conditions. The total polyphenol content is generally good and well-balanced in detail (anthocyans and tannins). This balance of components along with the elegant, generous range of aromas, allowed the Vino Nobile di Montepulciano 2005 to develop very well.
