This past June as part of a process to deepen our understanding of what a true team is, the Administrative Team spent an hour one morning looking at examples of high performing teams from history One example we focused on was the Great Pyramid of Giza constructed over a twenty-year period around 2650 B C by what was an estimated 100,000 workers We were drawn to the scope of the project, the urgency that was sustained over decades, and the teamwork that existed within the day and from one year to the next

We acknowledged that the work of building a school is never concluded, but we loved the commonality of being part of an effort where individuals had laid a foundation before us while others will follow to build on what we were able to accomplish

By any and all accounts, the 2014-2015 school year represented an amazing year of growth and advancement Students in all three divisions focused on learning and taking care of each other Teachers in all three divisions focused on their students learning and taking care of each other And parents in all three divisions focused on the partnerships with teachers and supporting the school on all fronts

There is so much that parents, friends, grandparents, and alumni did to contribute to the cause of building onto our “wonder of the world:” a renewed and re-energized Cannon Fund, the opening of The Rush Zone, an addition to the Dining Hall, a brand new turf field to be dedicated as Randy Marion Field, and the final installment of Building Bright Futures—a transformed space for Middle School On behalf of our faculty and staff, I want to thank each of you who contributed to this amazing year of generosity and support

Russ Andrews, our Board Chair from 2013-2015, deserves a special note of gratitude for his leadership during these two years and his willingness to give to virtually every project undertaken during his time as a parent at Cannon We are also grateful to J D Phillips, the Chair of the Advancement Committee for the last two years, for his personification of what a true ambassador for the school can be No one speaks more genuinely about his belief in the school’s mission

Anne and Holt Morrison, along with Hans and Siobhan Peterson, helped prepare and execute the best plan for reaching others about the importance of annual giving I have witnessed during my time at Cannon Todd Hartung, our Director of Advancement, oversaw every inch of this giving program and has done a wonderful job this year of drawing families into what is special about this school And Kelly Ratté-Matsey worked daily with volunteer leaders to maintain an energy and focus around the Cannon Fund We are grateful for all that Kelly has done for Cannon during her ten years at the school, and all of us wish her the best as she leaves to pursue a professional opportunity she sees as just as strong a calling as the pull that brought her to Cannon

Thank you for being a part of such a monumental effort What an honor it is for all of us who work here to partner with such an incredible group of people building this place for children

Sincerely,

Matthew E. GossageHe a d o f S c h o o l

There is something about the end of summer that makes me keenly aware of the passage of time It is a feeling that hits me when I scroll through pictures of my children from the first day of school to those from summer vacation, leaving me awestruck by how quickly they are changing and proud of who they are becoming I believe moments like these serve an important purpose; they remind us to be more than just passersby in our daily lives, and they inspire us to do something meaningful for our families, our friends, and the communities that nurture us And based on the generosity I see everywhere on Cannon’s campus, I know you share this conviction

While I know the purpose of this report is to look back at 2014-2015, I cannot help but be thankful for all the Cannon families who have gone before us and whose generosity laid the foundation for our current success And I am grateful for the current families and friends of Cannon who have given so much of themselves to provide the very best opportunities for our students, teachers, and coaches On behalf of our entire school community, I extend thanks to all of you who helped us reach these goals in the past year:

More than 645 donors gave over $565,000 to the Cannon Fund, supporting our school by bridging the gap between tuition and the actual cost of a Cannon education and benefitting every teacher and student with tangible enhancements to academics, the arts, athletics, and technology

Our renovated Middle School signifies the final piece of the Building Bright Futures Capital Campaign, and we remain grateful to the more than 400 donors who gave more than $7 4 million to complete the Cannon Performing Arts Center, the Andrews Strength and Conditioning Center, the Randy Marion Family Field House, enhanced locker spaces and coaches’ offices, and the Central Green

Following Building Bright Futures, we were humbled by the families and friends who continued to come forward to fulfill the needs of our school Specifically, twenty-one families and groups came together to raise $330,000 for the Dining Hall expansion that will improve every student’s day, and twenty families and friends gave $650,000 to complete the new Randy Marion Field where we will cheer on our Cannon Cougars

As is always the case, Cannon’s Parents At Cannon (PAC) groups—Cannon Advocates For the Arts, Cannon Connections, Cannon Cultures, and Cougar Club—gave of themselves in immeasurable ways that enhance the vibrancy of our school community And thirty Corporate Partners gave $84,000 to help provide the entire Cannon community with quality events, activities, and supplies to improve our campus life

Thank you again for your generosity I like to think that when future generations of Cannon families look back on what we have accomplished together, they too will be inspired to be more than just passersby in our school’s history

Sincerely,

Todd W. Hartung, Jr.D i rec to r o f Ad v a n cem en t

Cannon’s campus has been built over the last twenty-plus years by generations of families who have invested in the school’s future These past two years were no different, and our campus has been transformed through the incredible generosity of our community of parents, grandparents, alumni, alumni parents, trustees, faculty, staff, and friends with their support of the Building Bright Futures, Rush Zone, Dining Hall, and Turf Field campaigns

“Donating to the Building Bright Futures Campaign was not only a way to give back to Cannon School for the amazing learning environment Dalton and Danielle have received since JrK, but it was a way to pay forward enhancements at Cannon that will elevate the experience for students and families in the future. The strength of the Cannon community has always been based on the philosophy that if we all step in and ‘pull together on the same rope,’ everyone wins. The strength of the Cannon family is the school, and the strength of the school is the Cannon family!”

“Our sons Patrick ’10 and Tim ’13 played lacrosse each year they were at Cannon School. I coached lacrosse at Cannon for five years. That adds up to sixteen years of Cannon lacrosse. Adding in my wife Kathy living through each of those years, call it thirty-two years of Cannon lacrosse in our family! Our sons forged their friendships, character, and life-long memories on this field - as well as in the classroom. The turf will allow for hundreds of kids over the decades to enjoy the great sport of lacrosse on the turf field, in all kinds of weather.”

T H E C A N N O N F U N D S U R PA S S E S 2014-2015 G O A L

Thanks to the generosity of the Cannon community this year, we are celebrating record levels of giving and are grateful to everyone who supported the 2014-2015 Cannon Fund. The Cannon Fund goal of $500,000 was surpassed for a total of $565,900, the highest total in our school’s history.

Every year, the Cannon Fund provides critical dollars that support and benefit our teachers and students by providing professional development opportunities and enhancements in the classrooms that make learning interactive, engaging, and fun. Every gift enhances the learning opportunities for our students by supporting the athletic programs, visual and performing arts opportunities, and state-of-the-art technology in every division and classroom.

This year’s success was achieved through the generosity of 648 donors and the parent volunteer team who gave countless hours to Cannon’s most important fund-raising effort. It is with sincere appreciation that we acknowledge and thank our Cannon Fund leadership and volunteers. Cannon Fund Co-Chairs Hans and Siobhan Peterson and Anne and Holt Morrison worked tirelessly with a committed group of volunteers who helped ensure the great success of this year’s campaign to benefit Cannon students.

It is a long-standing tradition for the graduating class to bestow a gift unto the school The Class of 2015 supported a giving campaign to raise funds for a Victory Bell, which was installed near the athletic fields Says Upper School Dean Tom Booker, “The Victory Bell is such a special gift because it allows us to celebrate our students in a very powerful way Junior kindergarten through twelfth-graders will be able to use the bell and ring out the sound of victory for the whole campus to hear ” Many thanks to the Class of 2015
