The tables in the Function Centre of the Services Club were decorated in a fitness path theme, with gold and silver painted sports equipment, and local gum flowers representing the landscaping that will compliment the location. All of this however, was dulled by the spectacular outfits sported by the ladies, and some pretty sharp suits and ties from the men. The working party, which comprises Kath Balcombe, Lana Brown, David Francis, Jo Gaigals. Tracy Lamb, Julie Middleton, Margaret Morris, Rohan Toole and Graham Rice were thrilled with the success of the night. Thank you to everyone who had a ball; got involved with the auctions; bought a raffle ticket and or a balloon; and supported the fitness path project on it's journey, of which it is a major step closer to completion.

Perfect Popcorn 3 tbsp canola, peanut or grapeseed oil ⅓ cup popcorn kernels 1 large saucepan with lid (3L or more) 3 tbsp butter Salt to taste

Heat the oil in pan on medium high heat. Put 3 or 4 popcorn kernels into the oil & cover the pan. When the kernels pop, add the rest of the kernels, cover & shake gen-tly to spread evenly across bottom of pan. Remove from heat & count 30 seconds. This method brings all the kernels to a near-popping temperature so that when they are put back on the heat, they should all pop at the same time. Return the pan to the heat. Once the popping starts going off, gently shake the pan, keeping the lid slightly ajar to let the steam out. Once the popping slows to a few seconds between pops, remove pan from heat add butter & salt, make sure lid is fully sealed & shake the pan. Once butter & salt has covered the popcorn pour into a wide bowl. Other toppings: try caramel & pecan, cheese & paprika, icing sugar. Experiment!

New mural depicting the Eugowra Gold Escort Robbery 15 June 1862 Photo courtesy R G Watt

LOCAL POLICE HISTORY This is the mural on the IGA at Eugowra depicting the famous Eugowra Gold Escort Robbery on 15 June 1862 led by Frank Gardiner. Three years of bush-ranging exploits in the wider district followed, ending with the killing of Ben Hall near Forbes on 5 May 1865. Eugowra’s recent sesquicentenary celebrations on 16 June of the hold up were a credit to the organisers in spite of the very rainy day. If you have not already seen the Eugowra murals, they are worth a visit. Already there is talk of sesquicentenary celebrations in September-October next year of the raids in 1863 of Ben Hall’s gang in the Central West, including Canowindra. Also on 16 June, a plaque was unveiled on the front wall of Orange Police Station in memory of Constable William Havilland who was accidentally shot on arrival in Orange by a revolver under the seat of the damaged coach which had been held up by bushrangers near Eugowra the day before. He was one of the four officers of the Gold Escort and the first officer killed on duty following

the formation of the NSW Police Force on 1 March 1862 when existing independent police units of the colony were amalgamated into the single NSW Police Force. Canowindra Historical Society Publicity Officer, Dorothy Balcomb and her husband Harold visited the Justice and Police Museum in Sydney on 30 May. They received helpful information from officers on duty about Senior Constable John Herbert who was accidentally shot during a stake-out in the bush near Mogong on the night of 29-30 March 1865, while searching for Ben Hall’s gang, which had headed for Canowindra after robbing a store in Forbes. Herbert was taken to the police station in Canowindra where he was attended by Dr Rowland of Carcoar but died of wounds on Friday 13 April 1865 in Canowindra and ‘his remains were interred in the same place on Saturday’ 14 April. (Ref. Trove: Maitland Mercury 19 April 1865). A sign near the present Canowindra Police Station would be fitting and would add to Canowindra’s story.

Herb's Corner: Food For Thought Agriculture: US concerns over Agent Orange GM corn; BASF moves GM division out of Europe Anti-GMO advocacy group GM Watch welcomed news in January that German-based chemical giant BASF is moving its Plant Science (GMO) division out of Europe to concentrate on North and South America. BASF stated this was because “there is still a lack of acceptance for this technology in many parts of Europe – from the majority of consumers, farmers and politicians.” In other European news, the French government confirmed it will continue its ban on cultivation of Monsanto’s MON810 GM maize. US advocacy group for family-scale farming, The Cornucopia Institute, raised concerns over Dow AgroSciences’ petition to the US Department of Agriculture to approve corn genetically engineered to better resist the poisonous herbicide 2,4-D, a key ingredient in Agent Orange. GM Watch says 2,4-D was used as a defoliant in the Vietnam War, with scientists raising serious concerns about the safety of the herbicide. “The concern is that, just like Monsanto’s GE corn that is resistant to Roundup® (glyphosate) herbicide, the approval of a cultivar resistant to 2,4-D will cause an exponential increase in the use of this toxic agrichemical,” says Mark A Kastel, senior farm policy analyst with The Cornucopia Institute. Research by the US Environmental Protection Agency (published in 2003) found that babies born in counties with high rates of 2,4-D application to farm fields were 60 to 90 per cent more likely to be born with birth defects of the respiratory and circulatory systems, as well as defects of the musculoskeletal system, such as clubfoot, fused digits and extra digits. In its petition, Dow AgroSciences states that 2,4-D is increasingly important for chemical farmers because of the presence of weeds that have developed resistance to glyphosate, due to the widespread use of Monsanto’s GE glyphosate-resistant crops. “The concern that the use of GE crops, which are resistant to particular herbicides, leads to the creation of ‘superweeds’, is now shown to be valid and the chemical companies admit this is a problem,” says Mr Kastel. “The irony is that organic fields and crops are much more drought tolerant, because common sense and field trials show healthy and biologically active organic soil retains moisture much better than tired and depleted soil on conventional monoculture farms, and organic crops are healthier and more robust than conventional crops,” says Charlotte Vallaeys, a researcher at Cornucopia.

Wednesday 18 July 2012Wednesday 18 July 2012Wednesday 18 July 2012Wednesday 18 July 2012 at 7pm in the Services Club

REVIVAL OF HISTORY IN THE CLUB The next History in the Club will be of the theme Australian Year of the Farmer 2012. History in the Club was a series of lunch-time talks organised by the Historical Society before the Club burnt down. The series will resume in the Services Club on the third Friday of some months with the first being held 17 August, when Dr Jennifer Wythes will be the speaker. Jennifer had a distinguished career in several Primary Industry organisations in Queensland before retiring to her home farm country, Canowindra. Her topic will be ‘Wythes, Farming Family at Canowindra’, which began with her grandfather, Joseph Richard Wythes, who settled in 1897 on the farm he named ‘Rockdale’. Anyone interested is welcome. Friday 17 August at 12 noon: Casserole lunch in the Club dining room followed by talk in Nangar Room at 1pm: $15pp. RSVP for lunch by Wednesday 15 August to Diane Arandt, on 6344 7100 or Jan Harrison 6364 0258. Talk only in Nangar Room 1-2pm: $5. Bookings for seating if possible but drop ins will be welcome. There will be no History in the Club in September because Friday 21 September, is the first day of Canowindra Show. Of special interest this year will be a visit by the Year of the Farmer National Road-show. In this area it will visit Forbes, Parkes, Eugowra, Cowra and Canowindra Shows. While locals do not need to be convinced of the importance of farmers and they can meet a farmer any day of the week, it should be a must at the Show: To quote from their website: ‘Throughout 2012, nine Roadshow vehicles will hit the open road to demonstrate why Australian Farmers are among the best and most efficient in the world. Our Toyota Four Wheel Drives with Jayco trailers are specially designed to entertain and educate rural and urban Australians. The exhibits include interactive displays, a wealth of material and truckloads of fun activities for all ages. Over 12 twelve months, the Australian Year of the Farmer National Roadshow will travel more than 55,000 kilometres to attend up to 300 event days across all states and territories. Appearing at Royal Shows, local agricultural shows, agricultural field days & expo's, rodeos, festivals, concerts and other popular public events, the Roadshow will help all Australians celebrate the important role farming plays in all our lives.’

A FAIR SHARE FOR ALL OF CABONNE Jamie Jones has announced he will be standing as an independent for Cabonne Council at the upcoming Local Government elections in September. Mr Jones, who lives in Molong and is aged in his 20s, is currently the Chairman of the Orange Branch of The National Party and works as a Marketing & Communication Officer at TAFE NSW Western Institute. “I am very excited about running for Council” he said. “I’d like to think I can bring youth and enthusiasm to Cabonne Council. There aren’t many young people involved in Local Government these days and I am hoping to change that. Young people need to be involved to make their voices heard.” Mr Jones was born and raised in Cabonne Country. “I was born and bred in Cabonne” he said. “I’ve lived here all my life. I am passionate about the area and I want to see it grow and prosper.” Mr Jones stated his priorities included: Improving Cabonne’s road network; Ensuring all areas of Cabonne receive a fair share of funding; Better services for youth and families, and; Encouraging businesses to set up in Cabonne by slashing Council red tape. Mr Jones also said he would like to see Council support more community events, especially those that will bring more visi-tors to the area. On the issue of amalgamation Mr Jones said he opposed the Duffy plan to amalgamate eastern Cabonne with Orange. “The Duffy plan would lead to the collapse of Cabonne” said Mr Jones. “I’m for building Cabonne up, not tearing it down.” If elected Mr Jones says he understands being a Councillor is a big commitment and will give it 100 percent. Anyone wishing to discuss local issues with Jamie can contact him on 0419 011 819.

MORE SPACE FOR JASE LIONS CLUB UPDATE Jason Horton had a single motor vehicle accident in 2011 which severed his spine and he is now a paraplegic and will re-quire a wheelchair for mobility for the rest of his life. Prior to his accident Jason worked as a fencer, and now, after extensive rehabilitation, he wants to get back in the work force, and also visit schools to explain how quickly things can change when driving. To do these things, he needs transport. The NSW Government scheme "Lifetime Care & Support" allow modification of a vehicle for victims of motor vehicle accidents, however only one vehicle per lifetime of the victim is covered. As Jason and Amy's current car is older and difficult to access from a wheelchair it would be inappropriate for the task. Jason and Amy approached Canowindra Lions Club and asked if we could help them to get a new car for this purpose. After talking with them it was decided to try and help. If Jason's influence on students could save one family from going through what his family went through, or worse, it would be worth it. This is an update on the fundraising up to 2 July 2012: 100 Club raffle $5 per number at Canowindra Services Club: $100 won by Anne Traves. Banked $400 Raffle carton of beer donated by Royal Hotel, 100 tickets sold at $1 each. Drawn at the Royal, won by Matt. Banked $100 Sausage sizzle on Saturday 30 June where all food was donated, with many thanks to Gaskill Greens, Canowindra Country Bake-house, Belubula Butchery, Lawrence's IGA. Banked $248 $100 meat voucher, $1 per ticket, 100 sold. Drawn by Ron Cain, won by Sally Walker. Banked $100 100 Club raffle $5 per ticket, drawn at Canowindra Bowling Club by machine, winner Anne Kelly. Banked $400 The total, as at 2 July 2012 is a healthy $1,248 towards the goal of $38,000 for a Kia Carnival. The Canowindra Lions Club would like to thank everyone who has supported us so far on this project, and Jason, Amy and Jazz for all your help. Thanks also to the Royal Hotel and Bowling Club for allowing us to run raffles on your premises. If you would like more information, please call Ellen Flannery, who is on the "More Space for Jase" subcommittee of the Lions Club, on 0428 402 750. NATIONAL BALLOON CHAMPIONSHIPS 2013 After two consecutive successful years hosting hot air balloon events, including the 17th Australian National Balloon Championships in 2011, Canowindra Balloonists Jan and Graham Kerr along with Arthur Falconer, Chairperson of Canowindra Challenge Inc, are excited to announce that Canowindra has been sanctioned to hold the 18th National Balloon Championships in 2013, to be contested between 20-27 April 2013. Canowindra has always been associated with hot air ballooning and long been known popularly as the Balloon Capital of Australia. Canowindra first hosted the Australian National Balloon Champion-ships in 1988 and in recent years we have seen the ballooning community coming back to our lush and picturesque valleys. After successfully holding the 17th Aus-tralian National Balloon Championships in 2011 and a smaller local competition in 2012 Canowindra successfully held off the competition in the bid to host the championship event in 2013. With the experience gained over recent years and the support of world class International Directors the organizers offer the best competitive ballooning event in Australia. The level of competition in the environment that is widely regarded as providing the premier flying conditions Canowindra is assured of attracting the best of Australian balloonists. DRAFT LOCAL ENVIRONMENTAL PLAN APPROVED BY COUNCIL Following a public forum held Tuesday 3 July and a Council workshop Thursday 5 July, Cabonne Council has prepared a Draft Cabonne Local Environmental Plan 2012 ('Draft LEP') (applicable to all of Cabonne) and Draft Cabonne Settlement Strategy 2012 ('Draft Strategy') (applicable to Molong, Canowindra, Eugowra, Manildra, Cudal, Yeoval, Cumnock and Cargo). At the public forum, 29 written public and a number of government sub-missions were made, and 13 speakers covered some big issues across the Cabonne Shire in response to the public exhibition of the Draft LEP. The Council workshop two days later went through the submissions to balance concerns with government criteria. One local concern was the definition of agricultural terms in regards to keeping livestock in large residential lots. The wording was changed to allow grazing of livestock such as horses without consent for small scale commercial agriculture, although intensive agriculture is prohibited. Other local issues were residential holdings in industrial zones within Canowindra and Manildra. At the Ordinary Council meeting on Monday 16 July 2012 Council resolved to approve the Draft LEP and the Draft Settlement Strategy (with amendments) and for the Draft LEP to be forwarded to the Department of Planning & Infrastructure for finalisation and commencement. Council has also resolved to write to all of the community members who made submissions on either of the documents to inform them if their suggested amend-ments have been addressed or if further work may be required. The process for the Draft LEP will take time to address issues, and with the Local Government elections being held in September, the new councillors will need time to become conversant with the document, and other criteria such as budgets, work plans and strategic reviews will need to be factored in. It is intended that the Draft LEP will replace the existing Cabonne Local Environmental Plan 1991 once it is finalised. Further information will be given over the next few months, however should you have any concerns, please contact Cabonne Council on 02 6392 3200.

GETTING THE PULSE Two international speakers will headline a major Grain and Oilseed forum in Forbes on Thursday 2 August 2012. The Agribusiness Today, Getting the Pulse on Cereals and Oilseeds forum will see experts converge from around Australia and overseas to outline the latest information on the market, production and genetically modified crops. The free event is targeted at producers and industry leaders who want an update on Northern Hemisphere crops, many of which are moving closer to maturity and the potential demand for our crops from our Asian neighbours. Dr Karl Behrendt, Director of Australasian Agribusiness Research Centre at Charles Sturt University said the day is a great opportunity for local grain and oilseed farmers to hear first-hand about market-ing options and potential prices that will be on offer in four months’ time. “The crop looks extremely good through-out the Central West at the moment and with a good rainfall event over the past few days there are more positive signs we are moving towards a reasonable harvest,” he said “It’s important growers examine all their options to capitalise on the major rise in world prices due to supply concerns. “Rabobank will be examining world markets and we will also have local canola and wheat marketers and processors presenting on opportunities for growers on the day.” The event will also have two international speakers with Roberto Peiretti and Cintia Castagnino from Argentina discussing GMO wheat and conservation farming practices. “We’ll also look at different grades of wheat and provide a practical demonstra-tion on making bread with weather affected and high quality wheat,” he said. “There’ll also be a production focus to the day with a focus on fertiliser and well as Dr Peter Carberry from CSIRO examining the future of sustainable crop production systems. “I hope grain and oilseed producers will walk away with a lot more knowledge of what is happening around the corner and across the world. The forum really provides a unique opportunity for producers to increase their awareness of issues affecting the grains industry from paddock to plate.” The speakers, lunch and refreshments are provided free to registered participants with registrations closing Friday 26 July. To Register call 02 6369 1600 or email at [email protected]

HABITAT ON DISPLAY This coming weekend 20-22 July, 30 volunteers from NOVO RAIL will be on the Habitat for Humanity site at 11 Preston Street South Canowindra helping out the project team. There will be a barbecue lunch provided by Bunnings on Friday 20 July from 12noon, and everyone is invited to come and check out the progress. Project Manager, James Isaacs, has had a few challenges early on in the construction as the frames used for the homes are steel sheds that were made for air drop in and construction overseas for the Vietnam War. All pieces and tools needed to build them were included in a crate. All three structures are slightly different to suit each owner, however the shed frame influenced the internal wall layout. The materials used adhere to the Habitat for Humanity guiding principles, that the houses are simple, decent and affordable. Habitat homes help low-income families in Australia achieve the dream of building and owning their very own safe, secure homes through building partnerships with Habitat for Humanity Australia.

More than 100 homes have been completed in New South Wales, Queensland, South Australia, Victoria and Western Australia, with a further 40 family home projects in the pipeline. Each family receives a low-interest loan and volunteers help with planning and construction. The family puts in 500 hours ‘sweat equity’ and repays the loan at low interest – their loan is then passed on to another family. Donations are needed to help build homes for Australian families. It’s a gift that keeps revolving, transforming the lives of families as they build futures for their children. Come along with your friends or family this weekend and have a look at the homes, maybe pick up a tool or a paint brush and help out. It is hoped that the buildings will be completed by October so that the owners can spend this Christmas in their very own home. Should you have any questions regarding this weekend, please contact James Isaacs on 0428 814 095. TIGERS SHINE AT MOLONG Apologies to all Tigers supporters (especially Keysie from Sydney who avidly reads the report each week!), there was a gremlin in the system and the email wasn't received last week. This weeks round carried over two days with the grades split between towns. Canowindra Tigers 1st Grade travelled to Young on Saturday to take on the Burrangong Bears. It wasn’t to be the Tigers day with the Bears taking out the game 30 to 12. The boys were held back by the size and hunger that the Burrangong boys displayed. Sunday proved a better day for the Tigers with the Youth and League Tag teams travelling to Molong to take on the Bulls and Bullettes. It was an extremely cold and windy day but that didn’t interfere with both teams winning convincingly. The Tigresses came out strong against an undermanned Bullettes side, which resulted in the teams playing eight a side. The girls were too strong in all areas of the game running away 54 to 14 winners. Full credit goes to the Bullettes who never gave up, chasing down every ball and runner till the end. Tries were scored by Kathy Davis, Bonny Wythes, Tara Grant, Kiera Whatman, Sally McLean, Jess Fisher 2 and Maddie Vitnell 3. Conversions were successful by Mel Rue 1, Kiera Whatman 1 and Millie Cantle 4. Millie also took out the players player. All the girls worked exceptional together in what was a fast subbing game. Hannah Roth was fabulous in defence, Alicia Earsman helped set up several of the tries and new comers Annie Elliot and Kirsty Woolley both had stand-out games. Fingers crossed the girls can keep this up with their next game Eugowra in two weeks. It was a similar story for the Tigers under 19's team coming home 58 to 8 winners. The boys never wavered as they crossed the line 12 times to easily win. The boys all had standout performances and can hopefully repeat their win when they play Molong again next week. Again, full credit to the Molong boys for making it a clean, entertaining game and for never giving up. Try scorers were Nick Willson, Jayden Brown, Harry Myers, Blake Willson, Sam Wallace, Don Ash 2, Matt McLean 2 and Dean Wilson 3. Matt converted twice and Dylan Beer three times. Hopefully the 1st grade can turn the luck around and come out winners against Trundle next Sunday with a home ground advantage. The Youth play Molong at home and the League Tag girls have the bye. Kickoff is 12.40 for Youth League and 2pm for the Seniors. Come down to Tom Clyburn Oval and watch the boys in what is sure to be a great day of footy. Full bar and canteen facilities available. PYJAMA PARTY!!! Remember to get your PJ’s ready for the Tigers ‘Pyjama Party’ on Friday 27 July at the Canowindra Services Club. Entry is $20 which includes DJ Dukey, prizes, games and lots more. All welcome for a fun and cosy night.
