Wade Neil won his singles 6 : 0, where he stayed focused throughout the game. Jimmy Hu won 6 : 2 in his singles, and then won his doubles with Wade 6 : 2. Lachlan James lost his singles in a closely fought game, 6 : 7. Joshua Otto also had a really tough game in his singles, 0 : 2 down at the start, but he came back strongly and won the game by 12 : 10 in a thrilling tie break. Unfortunately, in the last game of the morning, Lachlan and Joshua lost their doubles 0 : 6. Overall the Firsts won in 4 sets 31 games to 2 sets 23 games. The team is still to face some tough opponents over the next few weeks and looks forward to the challenge which awaits. Mr Peter Vanderpoel (Coordinator) Seconds On a warm day in Autumn, playing at Forrest Lake State School, the Canterbury College Seconds faced St. John’s Anglican. The team, coming from a streak of 2 wins, was keen for the weekend. Despite the reputation of St. John’s, Canterbury, once again, succeeded in winning the game. The win wasn’t that easy for the Canterbury guys and the overall result was 4 sets out of 6, with 31 games won and 18 lost. The victories come from the first doubles, Ben Nguyen and Federico Sbarra, who managed to control the game winning 6-1. In a tight singles game, Ben lost 4-6, whilst Federico easily controlled his game and won 6-1. In the third singles, Alex Noney gained a solid win with a score of 6-3 and Lekan Atanda also pulled out a win, 6-3. As a doubles pair, Alex and Lekan were not victorious, 3-6. It was a fun weekend where Canterbury showed again that it can play a significant role in this TAS competition and shouldn’t be underestimated. Mr Peter Vanderpoel (Coordinator) Year 9 The Year 9 team approached their opposition with their usual level of focus and commitment this week. Johnathan Chen and James Lim teamed up for the doubles and Edward Xia paired up with Hayden Walker. Unfortunately, St John’s were a little too strong here and won both doubles sets. In their singles games, Johnathan had some long rallies, 3-6, whilst Edward managed to get two games from his opponent. Both Hayden and James lost their sets, although each boy fought until the final point. Mr Peter Vanderpoel (Coordinator) Year 8 Last Saturday, the Year 8 Tennis Boys had a very successful weekend. The St John’s players were closely matched to our teams’ skill levels but we came out with a four sets to two win. Casey Milne, Connor Wirth and Kian O’Keefe all came away with a victory in their singles and a comfortable win in the doubles. Two matches went into a tie break. It was a well-deserved victory. Mrs Yvette O’Keefe (Coach) Year 7 The Year 7 Boys Tennis Team improved dramatically from last week to this. With three of the four players playing for only their first or second time, they held their own winning a few games in all their matches. Cameron Macready provided tough competition for the opposition in his singles match playing for over an hour and going through a tie breaker, with St John’s winning in the end. It was a wonderful game to watch. Well done Team. Mrs Yvette O’Keefe (Coach)

Netball First VII The Firsts had a convincing win over St John’s on the weekend. The girls controlled the pace of the game well, providing fast transitions from defence into attack and patience through the centre court. Our delivery into the circle was consistent but will need some work if we are to continue to put wins on the board. Well done girls on another great game. Our 2017 season is well on track for a great overall ladder position. Mrs Deanne Hamilton (Coach) Second VII The Seconds Netball Team came up against an evenly match St John’s on the weekend. Being behind from the start of the game, meant the girls had to work hard in both attack and defence. With great team work and sportsmanship, the girls were able to make an impressive comeback after being down by 5 to even the scores. Despite the buzzer sounding before we could score one more goal, the girls should be proud of their efforts and the draw result. Miss Jessica Bohan (Coach) Third VII Unfortunately, the Thirds Netball Team were defeated by St John’s on the weekend 9 – 19. Strong attack and quick hands on their side kept our defence on their toes. Our play through the centre court was consistent with Alannah Kearns and Olivia Dennis helping out here. To get ahead in this game, our shooting needed to consistent; ensuring that all our attempts were scored. Our team defence positions did work hard all game to keep a control on the opposition’s score. Better luck this week girls. Mrs Leanne Lyle (Coach)

Year 9B The 9B Netball Team this week performed exceptionally well. I am so proud of the way that all the girls played. They all gave 100% effort and their level of game play has excelled immensely over the past few weeks. The shooting accuracy from Monica Ventnor was extremely good, and she managed to get some excellent shots in, under a lot of pressure from the St Johns defenders. The way that the girls play, not just for themselves but for each other is something that is very special and I am extremely proud of how the girls played as a team this week. Holly Anstee (Netball Captain) Year 8A At the end of this week’s game against St John’s, the opposition umpire complemented our Canterbury girls on their great sportsmanship during the game. As the coach, I couldn’t be prouder of my players. The team were motivated yet respectful in their 61-10 win over St John’s. Emma Brailak shone in the mid court, Tayah Battaglene-Sharpe dominated the defensive circle and Miah Ward shot an amazing 32 goals for the game. Great job girls. Everyone should be so proud of their effort. Mrs Kellie Murphy (Coach) Year 7A The 7A Netball Team remain undefeated with another convincing win. In 3 games the team have had less than 10 goals scored against them. The team has great skill and executes each game play with precision however the best thing that can be said about the girls is that they approach each game positively and play with exceptional sportsmanship. The second half of the season will certainly provide greater competition for the girls and we all look forward to seeing them continue at the top of the ladder. Mrs Deanne Hamilton (Coach)

Year 7 Supp Congratulations to all of our team who had such a close game with Cannon Hill Anglican College on Saturday. It was a close and exciting match against a good team. The girls all worked so hard over every inch of the court in defence (Courtney, Laila, Dianne). We were behind in the first quarter by five goals. In the second quarter, our passing and footwork was much better and we came within a goal (8-7). We settled, and improved our passing to the goal area. Well done to some wonderful goals and accurate shooting from Kaylee and Lilly. This improved play continued to the third quarter which resulted in an even score. Both Layla and Kyla worked hard and opened up great opportunities with their passing and intercepts. Many thanks to Kavena, who played centre for us. We did not play as well in the last quarter and gave away some passes due to rules and passing. CHAC won 18 goals to 14. Well done girls on such a great match and your improvement and sportsmanship throughout the match.

Mrs Therese Higgins (Coach) Hockey Year 8 Last weekend the Year 8’s travelled out to Forest Lake to play against St John’s. After a great win last week, we were hoping to continue this form in the game. Unfortunately, St John’s were able to shut down our attacking raids at goal, and we lost the game 1 nil. Hopefully we can turn this result around against CHAC this weekend. Miss Kathy Simpson (Coach) Year 7 Last Saturday, the Year 7 Hockey Team played a superb game of hockey against an under strengthened St John’s team. The girls dominated field position, managing to score an impressive 12 goals to nil. This was certainly a game to remember as it was also our first win of the season. It was pleasing to see the girls working well as a team, passing between players to promote the ball down the field. Hopefully we can continue this good form heading into our game against CHAC this weekend. Miss Kathy Simpson (Coach)

Rugby First XV After the successful round 2 win and excellent performance against John Paul College, the team had established a clear standard from which we could continue to build on for our season. However, traditionally the 1st XV have struggled to play their best rugby against St John’s Anglican College and unfortunately the weekend was no different. The team started well, with early possession and momentum, but were unable to capitalize on this. Against the run of play, St John’s were able to score an opportunistic try through a kick chase to take an early 5-point lead. The 1st XV responded with some effective pick and drive options, which saw Brock Smithers cross the line. An injury to a St John’s player saw the half-time called early with Canterbury leading 7-5 going in to the break. In the second-half, Canterbury found some consistency and increased the tempo and aggression in defense to dominate the opposition. This saw Canterbury secure three tries to achieve a bonus point win of 24-5. A number of excellent performance was evident, particularly from Thomas Preston-Smith and David Walsh. Thomas, came on early from the bench and had an immediate impact. His strong ball carry and work rate were of a high standard. David, once against demonstrated great line speed into contact and made significant meters each time. The team is in a

strong position as we head in to our final away game against CHAC next week. Mr Kirk Astill (Coach) Year 9 The Year 9’s had a much tough encounter against a spirited St John’s, vying for a place near the top of the table. The forwards started slow and lacked the aggression in both the rucks and mauls. This led to St John’s putting a lot of pressure on the team in the first 10 minutes. However, with good field position we were able to send Harry McHugh crashing over in the corner for our first try. The try wasn’t converted but soon after our lead was extended to 8 -0 with a successful Jason Smith a penalty shot. But this was short lived as St John’s capitalised on some basic handling errors and were able to score a converted try leaving us at 8 – 7 at half time. We started the second half with more determination and were rewarded with another try early in the half but again our skill level let us down and we really struggled for most of the half. Another late try finally gave us some breathing space and we ran out winners 20 – 7. There were some good performances on the day with Morgan Conway, Harry Duff and Kaleb Firth leading the way in forwards and Max Miller having some fine runs in the backs. This are areas that we will need to work on this week as we come up against CHAC next week who are mid table in the TAS competition. Defensively we need to improve as there were too many missed tackles on the weekend and our forwards need to be more physically dominant at the ruck. In the end, we still won and remain undefeated despite not playing our best rugby so that is a positive we can take out of the game. Mr Stephen Porter (Coach) Year 7 Last Saturday the Year 7 Rugby Team travelled to St John’s Anglican College to play. The first half saw Canterbury College get off to a slow start trailing 7-0 at half time. The second half saw a lift in both effort and commitment in maintaining possession of the ball leading to three tries. Matt Hurley, Jesse Burridge and Sirdie Ung all scoring with a conversion from James Carter. The play of the game came from Rocky Cullen with an amazing tackle down the sideline to stop a big run and bring the game to a conclusion with Canterbury on top17-12. This week sees us travel away to CHAC for Round 4 of the competition. Thank you to all of our parents and family for supporting as well as Hamish Kabel-Pluck for running the sideline for the team. Mr Alan Lyle (Coach)
