CANTERBURY PROVINCIAL CHAMPIONSHIPS POLICY

INTRODUCTION• Canterbury Clubs and classes support a standard for recognition of our

provincial champions.• Opportunities to be a Canterbury Champion should be inclusive.• The standards should be based on current best practice in event format,

event management and safety.• The champions should be recognised.

POLICY GUIDELINESTo receive recognition by the Canterbury Yachting Association (including medals, CYA website listing, invitation to Canterbury Yachting Champions and Awards event) Canterbury Provincial Class Championships must comply with the following conditions:1. All competitors must be financial members of an World Sailing affiliated club.2. The class must be recognised as a class or championship group by Yachting New Zealand.

CYA will consider approving exceptions in special circumstances.3. The event must be listed as the Canterbury Provincial Class Championship in the CYA major

events programme or a full Notice of Race must be published three months before the event.4. There shall be a minimum of four races scheduled and three races sailed for each class.5. Each class shall have five or more starters in at least three of the races.6. Scoring should be according to Racing Rules of Sailing Appendix A, except that should four or

more races are sailed, each boats worst score shall be discarded. If only three races are sailed then no scores will be discarded. If class rules require the use of a different scoring system, approval must be obtained from the Canterbury Yachting Association.

7. For class events the championship winner will be decided on a ‘line honours’ basis. Where non-class boats race for a championship the winner will be decided using a CYA approved handicap system.

8. CYA approved Race Officials should officiate at all championships.9. Sufficient records shall be kept to allow verification of these details.10. A report must be provided to CYA to confirm that Canterbury Championships conditions have

been met and a set of final results are to be provided to enable recognition.

MAJOR EVENTS

To sail successfully, you need to observe with great care. You need to identify what the wind and the water are telling you

and then find a way to execute, to reach whatever goal you’ve set, be that simply making it home or winning a race.

Meeting Night – Second Monday of the Month

Sailing from Monck’s Bay since 1891, Christchurch Yacht Club is one of the oldest clubs in the country. Members past and present provide a roll-call of world-class yachties including New Zealand’s first sailing Olympic Gold Medallists Peter Mander and Jack Cropp in 1956 and Leslie Egnot, Barcelona 1992 – Silver. With its distinctive historic clubhouse past Redcliffs on the road to Sumner, CYC has access to the water at all states of the tide and enjoys sailing areas both on the Estuary and over the bar into Sumner Bay. Low tide sailing by the beach at Shag Rock is particularly popular.CYC has strong fleets of Zephyrs and Lasers supported by a growing fleet of juniors sailing Optimists, Firebugs, P class and Starlings – all positively encouraged. Our active keeler fleet benefits from mooring and slipway facilities adjacent to the club.New members and families are always welcome, with learn-to-sail and junior coaching programmes available throughout the season. The club runs a Learn 2 Sail programme in the first half of the season for sailors generally aged 9/10 and upwards, booking is essential register your interest at [email protected] – don’t delay. For more information, please contact the Commodore or any committee member.

Website: www.mpyc.org.nz Email: [email protected] Clubhouse Phone: 384 3889

CLUB INFORMATIONThe Club is located just over the Ferrymead Bridge, where the Heathcote River joins the Estuary. We are home to fleets of Zephyrs, Sunbursts, Lasers, Starlings, P-Class, Optimists, Firebugs and a range of other yachts. An active training programme for both juniors and adults is helped by our Club owned boats – Optimists and Lasers. Sailing is safe and enjoyable in sheltered waters with a good complement of rescue boats and clear views from the Clubhouse across almost all of the racing area. Facilities include boat parks and storage, video facilities for training, and a warm clubhouse and canteen for a pie, drink and chat after racing. The club owns several lasers which are available for hire to sail at the club. Committee meetings are held at the clubhouse on the first Tuesday of each Month at 7.30pm – members are most welcome to attend.

CLUB INFORMATION• Pigeon Bay is situated approximately one and a half hour’s drive from Christchurch, a short

distance off the main Akaroa highway, on Banks Peninsula. (Turn left at the Hilltop, first bay on the left.)

• About seven kilometres long from the heads to the beach and facing due North, Pigeon Bay is exposed to good Easterly sailing winds on relatively flat water. As well as boasting one of the best sailing waters in Canterbury, there are good launching facilities and a large grassed and sheltered rigging area. The Pigeon Bay camping ground is approximately 300m from the rigging area.

• The Pigeon Bay Boating Club has its ‘historic’ clubhouse right at the water’s edge next to the wharf and has a mixed fleet of trailer yachts, centreboard dinghies and catamarans. There are club Optimists available for tuition.

• The club regularly hosts class championships each season as well as regular club sailing weekends. There is a good social atmosphere and the club is always happy to make visitors welcome.

PLEASANT POINT YACHT CLUB

PO Box 18 649, New Brighton, Christchurch 8641www.facebook.com/PleasantPointYachtClub

Founded in 1921, Pleasant Point Yacht Club is one of the oldest yacht clubs in Canterbury. The club’s facilities at Rat Island alongside the New Brighton Bridge were destroyed in the 4th September Earthquake in 2010 and we are now established at our new site in the South New Brighton Park, alongside the South New Brighton Jetty. While we are working out of temporary facilities, we are eagerly anticipating opening a new clubhouse during the season. The sailing area we have is unrivalled on the Estuary with the best water depth and there is always a warm welcome for any visitors. Enter the park off Beatty Street and follow the park road to our rigging area. We look forward to seeing you sometime!

CANTERBURY CLASSIC & TRADITIONAL BOATSwww.cantyclassicboats.co.nz

Since 2008 the Canterbury Classic and Traditional Boats group has been promoting and encouraging the restoration and building of boats of classical and traditional design i.e. row boats, canoes, sailing dinghies, small powered boats, launches and steam boats. Most importantly we endeavour to arrange non-competitive events to give opportunities for boaties and their families, to use their boats as well as meet and share experiences with others.

2019 Jan 19 Classic & Traditional Boats Day – Christchurch Yacht Club Feb 17 Classic Boats Race – Pleasant Point Yacht Club Mar 17 Classic Boats Race – Ashburton Sailing Club, Lake Hood
