he summer months are ahead of us and as families prepare for their planned outings, it is a good time to reflect on what we as individuals and as a community have accomplished. What have you accomplished? Many of us have new jobs or retired from old ones, children who graduated to a new grade or from elementary, middle, high school or college. Be proud of what you have done!

In the Torah this month, we come to the end of another book and start a new one is in front of us (Numbers). We complete the “Holiness Code” (Lev Chp 26-27) on the do’s and don’ts for living a good life. Although the laws are sometimes tough, we somehow find a way to “pay attention” and follow them the best way we can. A wise sage once said to me, “Any way is a way, if you make it a way!”

Yom Yerushalayim begins on the evening of June 4. The Knesset in Israel established this observance to celebrate the reunification of Jerusalem during the Six-Day War in 1967. It is a festive day, where weddings and other communal celebrations as well as haircuts are permitted.

Shavuot begins on Saturday evening, June 11. So here we are 50 days since Passover. The crops are ready to be harvested….let’s get together and celebrate Shavuot and the confirmation of Hannah Halpern! Please join us in the 3rd meal on Shabbat also known as Seudah Shlishit. Come for the food, learning, and laughter as we share a meal together as a family on this holiday.

On June 14, Marcy and I begin our journey to Israel to live for 7 weeks. It will be my longest time in Israel at one time. We will both go to Ulpan and attempt to learn modern Hebrew. During our stay, we hope to gain a new perspective on the lives of Israelis and Palestinians in their daily struggle with life apart and together. I hope to report to you periodically

In past months I wrote about some prominent Jewish people that most everyone has heard of but not as familiar with their story.

A Message from the President

Perlman soared in terms of his abilities with the violin, and offered his first public concert at the age of 10. He performed on television at 13 years old on The Ed Sullivan Show in 1958, and that same year, attended the Juilliard School, studying under some of violin's greatest figures. In the mid-1960s, he performed at Carnegie Hall and soon after won the esteemed Leventritt Competition.

Also in the mid-'60s, Perlman married Toby Friedlander, whom he knew as a teen. The couple went on to have several children and lived in New York City.

Over the following decades, Perlman has become a deeply revered musician who's played with all of the world's renowned orchestras, been featured in special events across the globe and appeared in a variety of media programs, garnering an array of awards and accolades. In 1978, a documentary on Perlman's life was released—Itzhak Perlman: Virtuoso Violinist, by Christopher Nupen.

He has a highly extensive discography, performing the works of such classical music icons as Antonin Dvorak, Wolfgang Mozart, Johannes Brahms, Antonio Vivaldi and Ludwig van Beethoven. In addition, he has collaborated with contemporary figures like Emmanuel Ax, Yo-

Itzhak Perlman was born on August 31, 1945, in Tel Aviv, Israel. He showed great musical aptitude early in life, but due to polio his legs became permanently paralyzed at the age of 4. Yet despite doctors' skeptical forecasts about the possibilities of pursuing music, the young Perlman persevered, along with father Chaim, who enrolled his son at the Music Academy of Tel Aviv.

Perlman has also made forays into

klezmer (traditional Jewish folk) musical traditions on offerings like the PBS special In the Fiddler's House (1995) and the album Live in the Fiddler's House (1996). He has delivered acclaimed movie music for the big screen as well, collaborating with John Williams on the score for Schindler's List and Memoirs of a Geisha and Tan Dun on the score for Hero.

Many adults today remember him on the PBS series Sesame Street. In 1981, Perlman appeared in a poignant segment demonstrating that people with disabilities in one area can have exceptional abilities in others. A little girl runs up steps to a platform and sits down with her violin. Perlman, who was born with polio, climbs up using his crutches. "Some things that are really easy for you," he says while getting in the chair next to her, "are really hard for me." Perlman then plays his violin very quickly and masterfully, to which she responds, "Yes, but some things that are easy for you are hard for me," as she plays at a more beginner level.

Itzhak Perlman has received more than a dozen Grammys, including the 2008 Grammy Lifetime Achievement Award. He has also won four Emmy Awards for programs like Perlman in Russia, the aforementioned In the Fiddler's House and Fiddling for the Future.

Known for his generous spirit, Perlman has worked as a teacher at Juilliard, and in 1998 Toby co-founded the Perlman Music Program, an educational, multifaceted resource for young, developing musicians.

In November 2015, the acclaimed violinist and conductor was named one of 17 recipients of the prestigious Presidential Medal of Freedom. He celebrated his 70

th birthday last year.

Clifford Lester showed a fascinating slide show of many survivors that he photographed. Dr. Eisenbach told us about many family members that perished in the Holocaust.

Ilana D' Agostino I remember the photographs that we were shown in the presentation. It is important that people that survived the Holocaust speak about it. Dr. Eisenbach and Clifford Lester are interesting people.

Amanda Williams Dr. Eisenbach spoke to our school. This humble man went through the horrors of the Holocaust. He spoke to me about my Bat Mitzvah. He shared his wisdom with us.

Natalie Halpern I remember the photos that were shown. Clifford Lester purposely showed wrinkles in the survivors faces to show what they went through.

Mark on Students

Last month, students from our CBS’ Religious School had two guest speakers share on the Holocaust. Below are just a sampling of the impact our students felt:

Just as beautiful as our Bat Mitzvah, Renee Tieszen took her Mitzvah project to heart, and filled with color, talent and love. She displayed some of the over 100 quilts she has hand made for an orphanage in Israel. Renee will complete her project this summer on the Synagogue’s Trip to Israel where she will deliver, all the quilts she made, to the orphanage.

Rather than try to summarize, we have taken Renee’s exact words she shared from bima as she became a Bat Mitzvah.

My Bat Mitzvah Project by Renee Tieszen

When I was much younger during a time when other Jewish children were preparing for their B’nai Mitzvahs, I was contemplating why my family fought amongst themselves when we were already in the midst of a senseless war in Vietnam. I might add that I didn’t know I was Jewish yet. I had two cousins and one uncle up for the draft to serve in this jungle war in Southeast Asia. For you young folks here today---at 18 years old all males had to sign up for service in the military. If your birthday was chosen first, you had to serve in the military; no ifs, ands, or buts. There were protests everywhere against the draft, against the war, flag burnings, and with others fleeing to Canada to avoid being called to serve. So why did my family fight? Because it depended on what side you were on regarding this crazy war and my cousins and uncle were in the middle of every argument and they weren’t even present. I decided right there and then I was not going against my cousins and uncle. They were forgotten. They were putting their lives on the line not by any fault of theirs so that we could sit at home watching TV and bickering amongst themselves. Ridiculous! Flash forward to today----Afghanistan. Another Vietnam all over again. This time I didn’t feel so helpless in letting our troops know they weren’t

forgotten by me even though their fight was ignored by most Americans and even by their own families! A small group of quilters and I put the pedal to the metal and let our sewing machines fly. By the end of the war, we had been able to send 300 quilts to comfort our men and women on the front lines. Once they came home, many of them suffered from PTSD---Post Traumatic Stress Disorder, caused by seeing too much death, being shot at, hearing bombs dropping all around and/or a myriad of other horrors of war. In general, Americans still didn’t pay much attention to these suffering men and women who were willing to sacrifice their lives so that we could continue our lives as usual and gossip on Facebook. So, I visited these veterans. Those same quilting buddies and I started making quilts as a way of giving love and comfort to the veterans at Loma Linda VA Hospital---to remind them they hadn’t been forgotten. I decided to go online to learn more about PTSD. I was horror struck to learn there were children as young as 4 and 5 years old suffering from PTSD. And in Israel no less! Little girls who were orphans suffering from PTSD and were also the living casualties of war! There was little contemplating on what I needed to do. These girls needed to know they are loved. Nothing says that better than a quilt.

About Lev Lalev: The time is 1946, in Israel, the Eve of Yom Kippur. A revered Rabbi, Yekusiel Yehuda Halberstam, who was still overwhelmed with grief from the losses of his loving wife and 11 children in the Shoah, began the Kol Nidrei service. Just as the rabbi began the holiest moments of the service, a young orphaned girl ran to him, crying, “Rabbi, who will bless me this Yom Kippur?” Rabbi Halberstam turned lovingly to her and replied softly, “Don’t cry, my child. I will be your father and bless you this Yom Kippur.” With tears streaming down his face, he lightly placed his hand upon her scarfed head, giving her a most heartfelt and sincere blessing for the coming New Year, in memory of the holy souls who perished in the Shoah. After drying her own tears, she thanked him and slipped away to her room where other orphaned girls stayed. When the girl told the others of the blessing, they, in turn, approached Rabbi Halberstam to receive a blessing. The rabbi calmly blessed each girl who came to him that Yom Kippur Eve. It was that Eve of Yom Kippur, 1946, that the seeds were planted for the “Lev Lalev” Heart to Heart Children’s Home for Girls. Although orphanages are required by Israel’s Youth Law to provide care only until the age of 18, the Heart to Heart Children’s Home for Girls, just like good parents, continues to provide for the girls until each one becomes an empowered adult. After the girls complete high school, the Home encourages the girls to pursue meaningful careers, including a university education; helps negotiate the dating phase of their lives to find appropriate marriage partners as well as assisting to finance wedding celebrations; and, to set up young couples’ homes

and furnishings. Counseling and tutorial services are given with selfless dedication for the girls to overcome their traumatized circumstances and to become well adjusted, self-sufficient productive citizens of Israel--- all within a familial atmosphere that provides physical, social, emotional, educational, and spiritual needs at all stages of their development. Each girl will receive her own unique quilt---no two quilts are the same---to remind every day that she is special and loved. You see, every quilt is stitched with love. When each girl wraps her quilt around her little body, it will be as though she is enveloped in the comfort of a warm embrace as long as she needs that feeling of belonging to last. You never know where you will find love. In Israel this summer those girls will learn of the love for them is in a place called Riverside. I will deliver, along with those going on the Israel trip with Cantor and Mrs. Cantor Marci, 109 quilts. Sixty-two of them are in the sanctuary right now. When you lightly toss little bundles of candy at me later, each one is wrapped in an “orphan” block, a block that has found no home in a quilt. If you would like to sign your block right after Kiddush and return it to me, I will create quilts from them and give those quilts to a few lucky girls at the orphanage, telling them the quilts are from Congregation Beth Shalom and my friends who attended here today. Education Shavuot is commonly known as the giving of the Torah. We all need rules to guide us through life. These rules teach us to be just and fair to one and another. The greatest rules are the ones given in the Torah. Shavuot celebrates God's giving the Torah to the Jewish people. The heart of the Jewish people's rules for living is the Torah. Shavuot, the festival of the first fruits and the holiday celebrating the giving of the Torah is kind of the birthday for the Jewish people. Confirmation for Hannah Halpern will be held on Erev Shavuot, June 11 at 6:00pm. Please join us for the celebration with your synagogue family. Spirituality The Ritual Committee is beginning High Holiday Preparations. That means we will be calling on synagogue members in good standing to have honors in reading Torah, Haftorah, and having an Aliyah. We recently had two inspiring B’nai Mitzvot – Renee Tieszen on May 21 and Lindsay Pineiros on May 28. Next this month Natalie Halpern will lead services on June 18 for her Bat Mitzvah under the leadership of Cantor Guest and Dave Severson. June 11 is Shavuot and Confirmation. Hannah Halpern will be our Confirmand. The Halpern family will be hosting a dinner before services at 6:00pm in honor of Hannah. Kindly RSVP to Rhona Halpern by June 4, if you are planning to attend the Confirmation Dinner. There will be a Yizkor service on Monday evening, June 13 at 6:00pm. Cantor Bruce and his wife Marcy will be leaving for Israel on June 14 and will return around the middle of August. We wish them a safe and wonderful trip. While Cantor Shapiro is in Israel, we will have visiting spiritual leaders and others to lead our services. The gentle chair Yoga class at CBS will continue in the summer. More info will follow as dates are finalized. The Independence Day celebration is July 2nd in Corona this year, let's get a strong Sisterhood presence and support the Brotherhood. Next Sisterhood meeting will be on June 9 at 6:30 pm. Should the synagogue not have a host, then we will serve Challah and wine – with the traditional blessings.
