Maritime training at South Metropolitan TAFE (SM TAFE) capitalises on its close liaison with industry to deliver a range of traineeships, award courses and short-term courses.

Working closely with key employers in the maritime industry, SM TAFE ensures the skills and knowledge gained through these qualifications meet current industry practice and workplace demands.

Students qualify with sound theoretical knowledge and extensive practical experience to prepare them for jobs, both locally and throughout the world.

Situated in the bustling port city of Fremantle, Western Australia, SM TAFE’s maritime campus boast some of the most comprehensive facilities for training in the country, with extensive facilities, sophisticated training equipment and highly experienced and qualified lecturing staff.

SM TAFE’s maritime training boasts unrivalled simulator technology, a fleet of eight vessels, biological and computing laboratories, and engineering, seamanship and aquaculture workshops.

South Metropolitan TAFE also offers marine studies and fishing operations training for the commercial fishing industry, on tourist/charter boats, work boats, ferries, dive boats and within the tourism industry.

WORLD-CLASS FACILITIES

The SM TAFE maritime campus has the most comprehensive facilities for maritime training in Australia, with extensive workshops, sophisticated training equipment and highly experienced and qualified lecturing staff.

Advanced and comprehensive maritime operations and engineering training such as navigation, cargo handling, vessel and engine room operations and maintenance through the use of AUS $1.7 million ship simulator training suite, the only one of its kind in Australia.

The simulators assist in training future shipmasters, officers and engineers. Through the use of simulated port and ship databases, trainees acquire skills in navigating and operating in varied environments. The technology features the most advanced mathematical modelling and shipping databases in the world and the hardware replicates the current equipment installed on seagoing ships.

Customised training delivery SM TAFE offers the following service models to international clients looking for industry workforce capability and skilling solutions. These models may be utilised independently or in combination.

CONSULTANCY

Consultancy-based services can be arranged to develop the capability and capacity of an institutional client or industry partner in the following areas:

VERIFICATION OF COMPETENCY (VOC)

VoC involves the observation of an employee by an accredited assessor to verify the current skills and competency of the employee in industry specific processes. It may be undertaken onsite at the employee’s place of work to minimise disruption to an organisation’s productivity. The employee is observed using equipment or operating specific processes of their place of work.

RECOGNITION OF PRIOR LEARNING (RPL)

RPL involves the assessment of an individual’s relevant prior learning (including formal and informal learning) to determine how much of this prior learning may contribute to an individual’s application for credit towards all or part of a qualification.

CORPORATE AND SHORT COURSE TRAINING

Short course programs are designed to focus on ensuring vocational skills are aligned to the needs of employers and industry. These can be delivered offshore or on-shore, using purpose built modern facilities.

TWINNING PROGRAMS

Twinning programs allow students to undertake the first part of their qualification at the institutional client or partner’s premises and complete the remainder of their study at SM TAFE.

TRAINING THROUGH A THIRD PARTY AGREEMENT

MODEL 1 – TRAINING SUPERVISION Our approved international education partners may choose to deliver an Australian VET qualification to students at their own facilities using their own resources. The academic oversight of the program is then SM TAFE’s responsibility. The suitability of this partnership is regulated through three phases: establishment (including a site visit); validation and monitoring; and assessment to ensure compliance.

MODEL 2 – JOINT TRAINING SM TAFE can also deliver training in partnership with an offshore or other registered training organisation.

Setting the standardSM TAFE offers programs that have been approved in accordance with the International Convention on Standards of Training, Certification and Watchkeeping for Seafarers (STCW), on behalf of the International Maritime Organisation (IMO) by the Australian Maritime Safety Authority (AMSA). They are certified to three international standards – ISO 9001:2008 quality, ISO 14001 environment and AS/NZS 4801 work health and safety.
