DEAR COLLEAGUES:

The 2011/2012 year has been a very busy and a very successful one for CAP! As an organization, we were delighted to unveil the CAP Quality Standards and Model for Good Practice in Accelerated Programs in Higher Education. In serving our mission, these resources were developed in cooperation with two accrediting bodies, and are intended to assist accelerated programs with accreditation visits as well as with overall program evaluation and improvement. Dr. Royce Ann Collins, former CAP Chair, continues her work with the Standards by performing research that will enhance the effectiveness of the Standards and Model. We look forward to hearing more about this research during the National Conference in Denver in August.

CAP has also been busy providing consulting services to institutions and organizations wishing to improve their work with adult students. Faculty development has been a major theme in CAP’s consulting work, and CAP also serves as a program evaluator for a grant-funded project in Louisville. We hope our work will continue to spread the message of quality and innovation in serving adult learners!

Webinars are now critical components of CAP’s service offerings. CAP partnered with the Council for Adult and Experiential Learning (CAEL) to offer webinars about the CAP Standards. We hope you were able to join us! If not, there will be future opportunities. In the fall, CAP will join with the Center for Adult Learning in Louisiana (CALL) to offer another webinar series that will be designed for faculty. We are very excited about the opportunity to reach out to our own and other groups’ members through webinars and other available technology.

CAP continues to sponsor a National Conference and at least one Regional Meeting each year. The 2011 Conference focused on Quality Accelerated Programs. We were so excited that representatives from two accrediting bodies joined us! Our Regional Meeting last October was hosted by Stevenson University and highlighted Assessment and Regulations. Both events received high evaluation marks from participants, which is our primary gauge for success. Looking ahead, Keuka College, in Penn Yan, NY, has graciously offered to host our fall regional meeting that will focus on Promoting Student Success. Mark your calendars for October 8th & 9th!

Financially, CAP has furthered its goal of becoming self-sustaining and ended this fiscal year “in the black.” By broadening the scope of services offered, CAP has found a way not only to be a voice for accelerated programs, but to serve our constituency in ways that extend our mission and theirs. We are excited about CAP’s future and the many possibilities to serve our wonderful members and to impact the students we all care about so much.

Enjoy this first CAP Annual Report. We are excited to share our year with you!

Sincerely,

Dr. Patricia Ellis Jeannie McCarron, MNM 2011/2012 CAP Board Chair CAP Director Stevenson University Regis University

“I will bring back truly excellent and specific ideas for my program. Thank you!”

“What a terrific forum. I will return!”

“The CAP standards will help my institution so much - not just with our upcoming accreditation visit but with our overall program improvement. Thank you for this great resource!”

- Member and participant comments from event evaluations

In 2004, CAP was founded at Regis University with a start-up grant from the Lumina Foundation for education. The original founder and accelerated learning researcher, Raymond Wlodkowski, Ph.D., had a vision of creating a network of accelerated learning programs that could serve as a forum for collaboration, communication, and information sharing among its members to advance and advocate accelerated education worldwide. Today, that vision remains CAP’s primary focus.

CAP began as a Special Interest Group within the Council for Adult and Experiential Learning (CAEL), and has flourished into its own member organization with a niche of service offerings that focus on accelerated programs and adult learners. Our founding institution, Regis University, continues to be a strong supporter and advocate of CAP by providing in-kind contributions that include office space, administrative overhead, and access to resources. We are also incredibly appreciative that Metro State University of Denver graciously provides complimentary meeting space, technology, and staffing resources to support our annual conferences. We are indebted to these organizations for their generosity and advocacy over the years.

Today, CAP continues to work closely with CAEL, as noted above, and is facilitating partnerships with the Association for Continuing Higher Education (ACHE) and other organizations in order to broaden its outreach and scope of services. We are excited about the many possibilities!

Tomorrow has much promise for this member organization that began small and had big dreams. We can now look back at the beginning and then look forward to the next year knowing that the higher education landscape has changed, but CAP’s mission and vision continue to be relevant and important to all who serve adult students.
