Haiti is on the western part of Hispaniola, the second largest island in the Greater Antilles. Haiti is the third largest country in the Caribbean behind Cuba and the Dominican Republic.

It was the first independent nation of Latin America and the Caribbean and the first black-led republic in the world.

On 12 January 2010, at 4:53 PM, Haiti was struck by a magnitude-7.0 earthquake, the country's most severe earthquake in over 200 years.

The 2010 Haiti earthquake was reported to have left up to 316,000 people dead and 1.6 million homeless
