The participants will learn about the value of collaboration with a myofunctional therapist for

patients that are struggling with noxious habits and orofacial myofunctional disorders.

1.Role of the oral facial muscle functions during cranial facial development

2.Functional evaluation of the tongue mobility as related to sleep disorder develop-

ment 3.Equilibrium of the facial complex through proper oral rest posture

4.Common orofacial myofunctional disorders

5.Health advantages of nasal breathing versus mouth breathing

6. Evaluation tools for airway screenings

7.The impact of the facial muscles and dental occlusion

8. The role of dentistry in prevention and solutions for airway and orofacial myo-

functional disorders

9. Collaborative care; when to refer for a sleep study and supporting health care

provider

10. Overview of Orofacial Myofunctional Therapy

Objectives:

• Participants will be able to describe the link between the orofacial muscle com-

plex form and function in regards to sleep disorders.

• Participants will be able to recognize signs of airway limitations and myofunc-

tional disorders. •Participants will be able to apply to tools for airway evaluation

and solutions.

Biography:

Cheryl Shafer, RDH, BS, COM

Degree in Dental Hygiene, 1983 Bachelor of Science Degree in Health Education,

Florida State University, 1985

Trained in Orofacial Myofunctional Therapy, 2015

Board Certified Orofacial Myologist from International Association of Orofacial

Myology, 2017

Registered Dental Hygienist with experience working in periodontics, pediatrics,

and general dentistry. Has practiced dental hygiene in Florida, California and Mar-

yland. Served as dental coordinator for Head Start Preschool Programs in Northern

Florida and wrote curriculum for caregivers at nursing homes on oral hygiene for

the elderly. Owner and Myofunctional Therapist at Facial Function Orofacial Myo-

functional Therapy in Ellicott City, MD.

Combining a passion for comprehensive dental care and family experiences with

myofunctional disorders has lead me on a journey of constantly learning, collabo-

rating and experiencing the impact that dentistry can have on the wellbeing of pa-

tients by evaluating, educating and providing treatment options for healthy nasal

breathing and tongue to palate rest posture.

President’s Message - Jennifer B Tipograph , DDS Happy New Year! I hope everyone had a nice holiday season with their

loved ones and friends. We are very excited for the second half of the

Alpha Omega year. We have a prestigious continuing education pro-

gram, multiple social events, and various charity opportunities.

In addition, we are starting to plan for the 2019 to 2020 year. If you

have any nominations for a potential board member, please feel free to

email or call me. We are over one hundred members strong and still go-

ing with our membership efforts.

Thank you to each and every one of you that has recruited someone

this year. Your dedication to AO has not gone unnoticed. Just like our

patients are our lifeline in our practices, members are essential for

keeping Alpha Omega alive!

Let’s keep the momentum going and thanks again for allowing me to

serve as your president.
