Ask Governor Jindal to Sign HB 843
HB 843 has come a long way since it was first introducedprior to the beginning of the legislative session. It has beenreported favorably without objection from the House Healthand Welfare Committee, the Senate Commerce and SenateFinance Committees. It has passed both the full House andSenate and now goes to the Governor for hisconsideration. None of this would have been possiblewithout YOUR support. Several amendments were adopted, with the support of theLSMS, that bolster the intent of the legislation includingmandating a review process by the LSBME Board before aformal investigation can move forward, requiring a burden ofproof (preponderance of evidence) for prosecution of acomplaint, and creating an appropriate separation of powersby precluding the executive director from also serving as thelead investigator on a case. Dr. Caroline Alquist is Chief Resident in the Department ofPathology at LSUHSC New Orleans and will begin a fellowshipat Dartmouth‐Hitchcock Medical Center in June. She hasbeen an LSMS member since her time as a medical student.We wish Dr. Alquist the best of luck in New Hampshire and asshe returns next fall to join Ochsner Medical Center.
