It has been a very exciting summer with the continuing restoration of the shaft house. We have started repairs on the windows of the shaft house and the shaft house floor. The restorations will continue into the fall and, if needed, resume in the spring. The six lower windows of the shaft house have all been replaced. As always, great consideration was given to keep everything historically accurate. We were able to get the same type of windows as the original, and the stain used on the windows was compared to a paint chip from the original windows to match the color. We are now in the process of restoring the upper windows, which will be done either this fall if time permits, or in the spring. New windows will help tremendously as the rain and snow will not be constantly coming into the shaft house. It also is another step towards restoring the shaft house to what it once was. We are also in the process of repairing part of the floor inside the shaft house. The part of the floor towards the back of the shaft house had been disturbed by the flooding around the shaft during a water main break years ago. While it was not an immediate danger, we wanted to make sure this part of the floor remains stable and any holes capped. We are going to have the floor leveled out with concrete pored over it. Restorations are also going on in the Captain’s office. We have replaced the steps on the front entrance of the Captains office. The old steps were a bit steep and the railings were shaky, so we were concerned that they may be a safety issue, as well as an inconvenience to many of our older visitors. The steps are now replaced and there are two sturdy railings. We are also in the process of trying to make the Captain’s office handicap accessible. We are currently looking into all our options to find the best solution to allow access to everyone while maintaining the original structure of the building. Upcoming eventsNext summer will be a busy one in the Copper Country, and there are some area events that Painesdale Mine & Shaft will be participating in.

Next summer, Hancock will be hosting Finn Fest 2013. There will be many events in the area, and we hope to participate in some way, as there were many Finnish miners that worked in the Painesdale mines and lived in the range towns.

Another event next summer will be the anniversary of the 1913 strike. We are tentatively planning an event and open house at the shaft house on Labor Day weekend. More details will be announced when plans are finalized.

Donations and volunteers needed!

Although we have been doing quite a bit of work on the shaft house as well as the Captain’s office, there is still much more to be done. We rely on contributions to fund not only the restorations, but also the ongoing expenses, such as insurance costs. We hope to continue our restoration efforts in the hope that the shaft house can serve as a reminder of the hard work of the miners and a museum for future generations. Any and all contributions are greatly appreciated.

We also rely on our members to help with events, such as open houses. If you can not attend monthly meetings, but may be able to help occasionally with special events, please contact us.

Our monthly meetings will now be held at 6:30 on the 4th Tuesday of every month. We meet at the Range Lounge in South Range in the colder months, and at the Captain’s office in Painesdale in the warmer months.
