Dressing Appropriately For Places Of Worshipby Felicia Layeni, Etiquette Coach

Our society has become much more relaxed and casual, both in our interactions with others and in our dress. It can be confusing sometimes, especially when lines become blurred between the “ordinary” and those things that are sacred. I had the following discussion with a fellow parishioner, last week.

Looking at this from a protocol perspective, members of a church are part of a

community – and every community has its norms, rules, codes of dress and conduct,

etc. Communities are strengthened when members support those codes. Ask

yourself if you are supporting them through your participation, conduct and dress.

From a spiritual perspective: If God holds the highest position on your priority list,

then the level of respect you show Him when entering a place of worship should

not reflect your lowest attire standards.

Ask yourself if you are dressing for church in a way that shows honor, reverence

and respect to God. Do you put as much thought into what you wear for worship

as you do for school, parties and other activities lower on your priority list?

Do you make sure that you do not wear “party” clothes to church? Review the

below checklist. If your church does not have a casual dress code, and your

wardrobe permits, never wear the following to any house of worship:•\

Jesus did say, “Come as You Are.” This is interpreted two ways: Come as you are,

regardless of where you stand in your faith today as sinners; and come as you are,

regardless of your socioeconomic status. Everyone knows her situation and how

this applies to her.

So, don’t be discouraged by a limited wardrobe. Just wear YOUR best to honor Him

This excellent experience on January 22 at the Plano Whole Foods introduced the debutantes to the different types of healthy snacks they can make. They made bake-less cookies, bake-less apple

crunch, and smoothies, that all tasted fabulous! Each debutante also had the opportunity to prepared trail mix to take home to enjoy. What A Wonderful Healthy Day!

Comment:

I enjoy being casual on weekends, including

at church. Members of my congregation

have given me glances of disapproval, which

makes me feel uncomfortable. We’re here

to worship, right? Not participate in a

fashion show!”

Response:Some congregations encourage casual

attire to attract youth, overworked

parents and others who are more

comfortable in this type of environment.

This is a great fit for casual dressers. I

will address traditional environments.
