AGMC has new GMRising from the ranks as technician, Kevin Hughes has 26 years’ experience in the automotive industry.

On the anniversary of 35 years in business and following a successful year in 2010, AGMC, the importer of BMW Group vehicles in Dubai, Sharjah and the Northern Emirates, has appointed Kevin Hughes as new general manager. The Scottish national, who has 26 years’ experience in the automotive industry,

will take over the day-to-day business operations from Stathis I. Stathis after 35 years in the role.

Hughes will utilize his vast experience to drive AGMC’s expansion as the company looks to build on its success over the years, particularly in 2010 when sales of BMW and MINI vehicles achieved a 19% increase over 2009 and Rolls-Royce vehicles achieved a 45% increase. Hughes will work alongside Stathis I. Stathis who will now become managing director of Al Batha Automotive Group, AGMC’s

parent company.A graduate of Glasgow Caledonian

University in Auto Engineering and Management, Hughes began his career as a technician before working his way up the corporate ladder within the automotive

field. Prior to taking on his new role in Dubai, Hughes was general manager of BMW Group in Nigeria and spent five years as general manager of Fouad Alghanim Automotive (FAA) in Kuwait.

The appointment of Hughes is part of AGMC’s ambitious development plans for the business and its facilities, including this month’s completion of the final phase of an AED80 million expansion of its flagship showroom on Dubai’s Sheikh Zayed Road.

Commenting on his new appointment, Hughes said, “Taking over the role of general manager for AGMC presents an exciting challenge and one which I look forward to bringing my experience to the role and working closely with the strong team already in place, to take the company to greater heights. The bodyshellIts bodyshell is made from aluminum, with

cast node elements and extruded profile forming an extremely stiff framework into which the aluminum panels are integrated. The spaceframe structure is extremely impact-resistant and forms the basis for the super sports car’s precise handling.

Against this background, the task of reducing weight by a further 65 kilograms (143 lbs) compared to the Gallardo Spyder presented a huge challenge to the engineers.

The Lamborghini experts handled the task as they usually do – with hi-tech competence and aesthetic flair. With its minimal weight and extremely high stiffness, carbon-fiber is the ideal material for a super sports car.

The engineIn the Gallardo LP 570-4 Spyder Perform-

ante, LP stands for “Longitudinale Posteriore” and refers to the orientation of the V10 en-gine – which is mounted longitudinally behind the driver, just like every Lamborghini engine.

The number 570 refers to the maximum pow-er output in hp, which equates to 419 kW and is available at 8,000 rpm. Equally impressive is the pulling power – the torque curve peaks at 540 Nm (398,3 ft lbs) at 6,500 rpm. The in-crease of 7 kW (10 hp) is the result of the new dedicated engine management strategy.

The powerful V10, combined with the model’s weight reduction, gives the Gallardo LP 570-4 Spyder Performante breathtaking performance. The sprint from zero to 100 km/h (0-62 mph) takes just 3.9 seconds. Drive

continues relentlessly to a top speed of 324 km/h (201 mph).

Power transmissionThe Gallardo LP 570-4 Spyder Performan-

te comes with the e-gear transmission oper-ated via steering wheel paddles, as standard. The automated system with electronic management shifts through its six gears extremely smoothly and far more quickly than could be achieved by human reflexes.

ing modes, two of which are also available in automatic. The “Thrust mode” delivers maxi-mum off-the-line performance and is pro-grammed to manage starting revs of around 5,000 rpm with minimal wheel slip.

The running gearThe Gallardo Spyder Performante is a

highly-concentrated driving machine – it thrills with breathtaking cornering speeds and fast, immediate reflexes. Its handling is always precise, stable and predictable.

Behind the huge wheels are brakes that deliver uncompromising stopping power and are managed by the standard-fit ESP stability control system. The front wheels are served by aluminum eight-piston calipers, with four-piston units at the rear. The venti-lated brake discs have diameters of 365 and 356 millimeters (ø 14.37 x 1.34 in and 14.02

x 1.26 in) respectively. As an optional extra, Lamborghini can fit extremely fade-resistant and lightweight discs made from carbon-fiber ceramic with six-piston calipers up front. The front ceramic discs have a diameter of 380 millimeters (ø 15 x 1.5 in).

The myth lives on The history of open-top Lamborghinis be-

gan with small volumes. In 1965, the company built just two of the 350 GTS, the open-top version of the first model to be produced in Sant’Agata Bolognese. Even more tragic from today’s perspective is that only one copy of the exquisite P400 Miura Roadster from 1968 was ever built. Lamborghini unveiled its first series production open-top in 1976 with the Silhouette – its V8 mid-engine with 250 hp of-fered refined performance, while a removable roof delivered that topless feeling. Its suc-

cessor was the Jalpa Speedster, which was launched in 1986. The V8 power unit with a 90-degree cylinder bank angle was once again mounted behind the seats, albeit enlarged to 3.5 liters – which, with the same output, guaranteed much better torque.

The true hero among the open-top Lamborghinis, however, is by far and away the Gallardo Spyder – at least, when it comes to the number produced. The first genera-tion appeared in 2006, with a ten-cylinder engine, 520 hp and an electro-hydraulic roof engineered for high-speed driving. The second generation followed in 2008 – the Gallardo LP 560-4 Spyder. Its designed had been sharpened even further, its output increased to 560 hp and many detail improvement made throughout, demonstrating the dedication that Lamborghini applies to perfecting its super sports cars.

Re-engineered V8 engine

The Bentley powertrain engineers set three objec-tives for the

Mul-sanne: to produce the effortless torque from extremely low revs that customers ex-pect of a grand Bentley; to maintain the high-est levels of refinement; and, to satisfy strict current and future environmental standards through improved engine efficiency.

While other powertrain configurations were considered early on in the project, it soon became clear that these targets could best be achieved with a totally revised version of the 6¾-litre V8 engine – the very configura-tion that had been used so successfully in the past. However for the new Mulsanne, all the major building blocks of the engine would be comprehensively re-engineered to integrate the very latest technologies.

To achieve a significant reduction in fuel consumption and CO2, emissions, the Mul-

sanne V8 sees the introduction of two new control systems: cam phasing and, a first for the ultra-luxury sector, variable displacement.

The pioneering use of these two technolo-gies in combination allows the Mulsanne’s engine management system not only to adjust the V8’s breathing for improved engine idle quality and torque delivery, but also to close the valves of four of the eight cylinders for maximum fuel economy when cruising.

In the new Mulsanne, the 6¾-litre V8 devel-ops 512 PS (505

bhp/377 kW) while the massive torque (1020 Nm / 752 lb ft) is now delivered even earlier at 1800 rev/min. This dramatic improvement in torque delivery from just above idle and right across the rev range en-sures that with a mere tap of the accelerator the driver is immediately rewarded with that characteristic deep, muffled V8 burble and phenomenal acceleration.

The Jaguar C-X75, which was unveiled recently in Paris is a stunning range-extended electric supercar concept made to celebrate 75 years of beautiful, fast Jaguars. This evolution also points the way to a new design language.

The eclectic electric supercar is capable of reaching 330km/h (205mph), sprinting from 0-100km/h (62mph) in just 3.4 seconds and has a blistering acceleration of just 2.3 seconds from 80-145km/h (50-90mph).
