Carbohydrates

• Body breaks down into simple sugars• Body uses sugars for energy• Causes rise of blood sugar• contain carbon, oxygen and hydrogen. • Two types:– Simple quick bursts of energy– Complex lasting energy

• Candy, Vegetables, Whole Grains, etc…

Fats• Compounds made of Hydrogen, Oxygen, and Carbon• Provides calories • Needed for brain growth• Source of about 30% of daily calories• 3 types: – Unsaturated fats good – Saturated fats bad – Trans fats worse!

• Oils, meats, cheese, milk, margarine, etc…

Protein

• Repairs muscles, defend illnesses, etc…• One of the most plentiful bodily substances• 40-70 grams needed per day• 2 types:– Complete supports normal biological functions– Incomplete gives you partial amount needed

• meat, eggs, dairy, nuts, seeds, etc…

Fibre

• Carbohydrates that can’t be digested• Prevents diabetes and heart disease• Help with constipation • Contains no calories• 2 types:– Soluble fibre lower cholesterol– Insoluble fibre helps with constipation

• fruits, vegetables, grains, and legumes

Vitamins

• Many different kinds, all with different uses• Different foods contain different vitamins• Needed for a proper working body• 2 types:– Fat soluble stored in fat tissues and liver– water soluble Travel through

bloodstream• Dairy, fruits, animal products, vegetables, etc…

Minerals• Chemical elements required by humans• Boost immune system, help growth

development• Calcium, iron, magnesium, potassium, zinc,

etc…• 2 kinds:– Macro gives body large amount– Trace gives body small amount– Dairy, nuts, vegetables, grains, etc…

Water

• Two parts hydrogen, one part oxygen• makes up more than half of your body weight • can't survive over about 3 days without• Helps fight off illness• Each cell depends on water• Helps digest food• Orange juice, milk, all beverages
