/7MITIE can help make your transition into the new low carbon economy easy and efficient. Our comprehensive portfolio of services can be used individually or – even more effectively – brought together to create a complete energy and carbon strategy. Whether you’re just after some friendly advice, or developing a forward-looking sustainability strategy for your organisation, you’ll find our approach fresh, contemporary, and innovative.

Key benefits Fullest possible range of carbon • and energy services

Reliable information, insight, • and intelligence

A practical perspective as to • what can be done and how

Our experience in energy and carbon reduction is second-to-none. Our team of professionals range from experts in energy management, to commercial, financial and legal specialists. This means we have the know-how to create tailor-made packages that guarantee to reduce both your energy bills and your carbon emissions. But before we can develop any package like this we have to start by ensuring that everyone in your organisation understands the nature of the energy and carbon issues your business is facing.

For example, your overall business strategy will increasingly need to take account of developments in the regulatory regime. Both the UK and the EU are seeking to increase energy efficiency, reduce carbon emissions, and safeguard energy security, but the new rules being introduced to achieve this are also creating a new and significant burden for both businesses and public sector organisations. You need expert support to deal effectively with this new terrain. We have dedicated experts in this field who don’t just undertake detailed

research but take an active part in lobbying for – and advising on – changes to the legislative landscape. This means our tracking and intelligence services will make sure you’re always aware of new developments in energy and carbon regulation, so that you can take the action needed to manage your internal performance, and comply with new and upcoming laws.

Getting a complete picture on the energy and carbon challenges facing your business also means factoring in both finance and procurement. What works for another organisation may not work for yours, so you need to ask yourself what makes for a successful energy investment in your business. Have you looked at all the options for asset investment – including the less conventional ones? And are you taking full advantage of the whole range of funding available for more sustainable alternatives? We can help you evaluate the packages offered by the utility companies, and access the funding available under arrangements like CERT.

Raising awareness

There’s plenty of advice available on energy saving, but you need someone you can trust who understands the specific challenges that arise in this field, and how to apply that insight in a practical context.

We’re seeing an unprecedented level of new legislation in this area, and the pace of change can only increase in the next few years, as EU and UK carbon reduction targets start to bite.

Energy use and carbon emissions are today a key business focal driven by government and society.

Page 6: CarbonCare brochure

/9There’s a good reason why we use the phrase ‘innovative ideas’ rather than simply ‘innovation’. People often assume you need the latest new technology to achieve real energy savings, but that’s not always the case. Cutting-edge kit can help, but fresh thinking is just as important, and that’s about tailoring what we do to what each site needs.

60%Our innovative energy solutions are helping local councils achieve 60% carbon reductions in Building Schools for the Future new-build schools.

15%Good housekeeping including switching unnecessary equipment off, reviewing heating temperatures and being sensible with comfort cooling can reduce energy consumption by over 15%

27%Efforts to increase energy efficiency at the Communities and Local Government’s main site have resulted in a 27% reduction in energy usage in the year to 2008 – the equivalent of 1268 tonnes of CO2 and over £160,000.

Key benefits Cost-effective solutions built • around you

Leading-edge expertise that’s • both practical and technical

The experience to know which • new technologies will really make a difference

We have extensive experience in developing customised energy-saving programmes that have been proved to work. As a result we know that the most successful initiatives are those that are specifically tailored to the site in question, fully integrated with the right control, monitoring and corrective action plan, and included in the site’s forward maintenance programme.

We combine this robust framework with industry-leading expertise in the latest technologies. In other words, we know what works best, and where, whether that’s new equipment or simply a cleverer way of using what you already have. The result is a cost-effective programme that’s exactly tailored to the type, size, and location of each site. No-one has more extensive technical expertise in conceptual design and development, and no-one has more practical knowledge about how to implement process enhancements, and manage on-going improvements.

We’ve built our success on applying this combination of practical know-how and technical capability in the best possible way for each of our clients. We know we can create exactly the right approach for your site, and deliver fast and significant results.Innovative

/15Data management

‘If you can’t measure it, you can’t manage it’: it may be a cliché but it’s still true and nowhere more so than in energy and carbon management. You can’t achieve meaningful reductions here unless you start with detailed, reliable data. That’s why many of our energy management programmes begin with the installation of accurate real-time meters.

Key benefits A clearer understanding • of your energy use

Better business planning, based • on better information

More accurate energy bills, • and savings of up to 10%

CRC cost liabilities reduced • by up to 50%

But data on its own is not enough. You need to be able to turn that raw information into useful knowledge, which is exactly what our teams do. We utilise the statistics on your energy use as the basis for tailor-made programmes for our carbon compliance, guaranteed reduction, and renewable energy services.

We also use energy data in other important ways. One is in technical asset management, where we assess the ongoing performance of specific pieces of equipment according to their energy efficiency, which helps us determine the right maintenance and replacement schedules. Planned Lighting Maintenance is a great example. If we have the right data we can predict very precisely when ageing light fittings are going to start to deteriorate, which is when they start to use more energy. If we replace them at this point we not only maintain good light quality in the building, but deliver cost-effective maintenance, lower energy costs, and reduced carbon emissions.

Accurate data is also vital in negotiating competitive pricing for power and water, where you may be able to secure a much better tariff if you don’t just know

how much you use, but when you use it. It sounds straightforward enough, but it can be surprisingly challenging even when you have a standalone building with its own supply; it’s even more difficult if you’re in a multi-tenanted building, or if concessions or sub-contracts are involved. Our long expertise in facilities management means we know where many of the problems are likely to lie, and can help you arrive at data that accurately reflects how much of the total building consumption is genuinely down to you. We can then use this information to negotiate a better deal with your energy suppliers. Which all goes to prove that knowledge really is power – in every sense of the word.

Last but by no means least, accurate energy data is a vital requirement for any company participating in an emissions trading scheme like the EU ETS. We were one of the pioneers of the UK emissions trading scheme back in 2002, and we’re now trading on behalf of a number of major businesses in the new CRC Energy Efficiency Scheme.

Data is itself not the solution to energy savings, but it is the route to the required solutions.

Without effective data no energy or carbon management programme should be embarked on. It is the starting point.

Accurate energy and emissions data is the cornerstone to provide effective energy and carbon emissions solutions. If you cannot demonstrate a change how can any initiative be proven?

Page 10: CarbonCare brochure

/17These days it’s not enough to manage all your traditional business costs; you have to factor in the cost of carbon as well. We can help you reduce the financial impact of new carbon tax legislation, and keep you up-to-date with all the other developments that could affect you.

Key benefits not just legal compliance • but the best position for you in CRC league tables

Reduced risks•

Easier energy certification•

Contribution to Corporate • Responsibility goals

We have a dedicated team of experts who can help you ensure that you’re complying with all your legal energy obligations, including the CRC Energy Efficiency Scheme. We have advisory services that can analyse your historical energy consumption data, report your current CO2 emissions, evaluate the potential costs for CRC allowances, and advise on the registration process. We can also develop a carbon management strategy tailored to your own particular business, provide monthly and yearly consumption analysis and reporting, and support you through Environment Agency audits.

Our technical capabilities range from Fgas programme installation and inspection, to environmental impact management up to ISO 14001 standard, to certification for the Energy Performance of Buildings Directive. More importantly, we can also help you achieve both the technical and behavioural changes you’ll need to comply fully with processes like this, so that you can move beyond mere box-ticking to real and sustainable improvements. Put simply, we can make your buildings perform better – for the planet, your profitability, and the people who work for you.

Carbon compliance

The Energy Performance of Buildings Directive requires companies to publish the energy use and carbon emissions data from their buildings. The simplest way to save energy in your building is not to heat, light or ventilate anywhere unless it’s actually being used, especially outside normal working hours.

Every business now has to comply with the CRC Energy Efficiency Scheme – and individual performance will be made public.

Failure to participate effectively in the CRC will lead to carbon compliance costs double those if you don’t participate effectively, including registration and reporting.

/23Reducing carbon emissions doesn’t just make environmental sense; it makes hard commercial sense too. A business that emits less CO2 will almost always be using less energy, which translates directly to lower bills and higher efficiency. We’ve been helping businesses do this for years – long before climate change became such a high-profile concern.

Key benefits CO• 2 reductions and cost savings guaranteed

Fully integrated operations • approach

Assets operated from a full life • cycle basis including energy, operation and compliance

Every organisation in the country is now facing a combination of both carrot and stick when it comes to carbon: the stick is the growing burden of environmental tax and regulation, while the carrot takes the form of a healthier corporate reputation, and lower business costs. We can help you deal with both sides of the coin, with the most comprehensive range of services available from any single supplier.

We can measure and benchmark your carbon footprint, devise energy-saving campaigns and action plans, and help you source clean alternatives. We have specialist technical and engineering teams covering issues like building management, lighting, and monitoring and evaluation. They can help you cut your energy use, as well as reducing your costs under the CRC Energy Efficiency Scheme.

The benefits of an integrated approach like this really add up: our clients typically save upwards of 20% in their energy costs, and one of the most important ways we achieve this for them is by carrying out a first-class maintenance regime.

Guaranteed reductions

40%40% of the UK’s CO2 is produced by offices and commercial buildings.

78%78% of employees make the effort to save energy at home, but don’t do the same at work.

34%The UK is committed to reducing its carbon emissions by 34% by 2020.

Page 14: CarbonCare brochure

/25Traditionally, we have obtained all our electricity from the national grid. Coal and gas fired power stations create 30% of the UK’s CO2 emissions, and electricity generated in this way is highly inefficient, losing over 60% of the energy through heat loss at the power station and in transmission.

Key benefits Expertise in every kind • of renewable energy

Extensive track record • with some of the country’s biggest businesses

Government accreditation•

Increasingly, organisations are turning to decentralised energy, which is generated close to where it will be consumed, and distributed through local networks. This is more efficient and creates a much lower, or even zero, carbon footprint. It also allows organisations and communities to take greater control of their own energy provision.

Our decentralised energy schemes span a broad spectrum of applications, deploying a diverse range of technologies. We develop large energy centres, based on low-carbon combined heat and power (CHP) technology, capable of providing the energy base load for a hospital or university. Biomass-fueled energy centres can power a retail or business park. We design these assets with excess capacity, so that surplus energy can be sold to the local community, providing valuable revenues to the client.

We also install wind or solar photovoltaic facilities that generate electricity for on-site consumption, or can be exported to the grid and offset against the sustainable energy requirements of schools, offices or other buildings. These renewable technologies

have become much more economically attractive through the Government’s new Feed-in-Tariffs (FiT). Renewable heating schemes, including ground and air source heat pumps, and solar thermal, will benefit from the Renewable Heat Incentive (RHI), due to begin in 2011.

Decentralised energy infrastructure can be complex and it’s important to choose the right technology and economic model for your specific site and requirement. We explore every possibility thoroughly, and then apply our innovative engineering skills to develop a bespoke solution. Our team is accredited as an approved designer and installer under the government’s Microgeneration Certification Scheme. We can also help you access the different types of grant funding available and support you through the application process. It really is a comprehensive offer – from evaluation and design, right though to construction, operation, and ongoing maintenance.

Decentralised energy

The world’s stock of fossil fuels is reducing and these will progressively become more expensive.

The UK is physically well placed for the application of many renewable energy technologies.

Renewable energy technology must be widely deployed to meet Government and EU targets for carbon emissions.
