Overview:StarfleetoriginallyenvisionedtheCardenasclassasamultiroledshippushingtheboundariesoftheFederation.AfterhostilitieswiththeKlingonsbrokeout,however,Starfleetbeganrefittingtheclassregularlytomakeitmoretacticallycapable.ShipsliketheU.S.S.BuranandtheU.S.S.Yeagerwerethestuffoflegendsduringthewar,cementingtheCardenasclassasacelebrateddesignforFederationcommanders.
Capabilities:AsitwaslaunchedjustbeforetheFederation-KlingonWar,theCardenasclasswasanimportantpartoftheFederationfleetduringthatwar.Beingbothfastandwell-armed,Cardenas-classshipsweredispatchedfrequentlytocrisisareasasneeded.Intimesofpeace,theCardenasclasscouldjustaseasilyuseitssensorarrayandpowerfulenginesforscientificandexploratorysurveys.

Overview:Theworkhorseofitstime,thecompactEngleclasswasoriginallyintendedasamobileresponsevesselfortheFederation’srapidlygrowingnetworkofcolonies.Itsoonbecameapparent,however,thattheEngleclasswasexceptionallyversatileandStarfleetproducedhundredsofvesselsinthisclasstofulfilleverythingfromcargosupplyandexplorationtocombatzonesanddiplomaticmissions.Inthe2250stheEngle-classwasbyfarthemostcommonspaceframeusedbyStarfleetanditwasn’tuntilotherversatiledesignsliketheConstitutionclassandMirandaclasswerelaunchedthatthenumberofEngle-classshipsbegantowane.
Capabilities:TheEngle-classspaceframe’soriginalemergency-responsepurposecanbeseeninitsadvancedmedicalfacilitiesanddataanalysis.TheresilientdesignofitssystemsarealsosuitedforcrisiszonesbutalsoforcombatandboththeengineeringdepartmentandpropulsionsystemsarestrongenoughthatmanyEngle-classshipswereassignedtocombatmissionsduringthewarwiththeKlingonEmpire.

Overview:Whenitwasfirstlaunched,theHooverclasswasenvisionedasasciencevesselthatwouldrevolutionizeStarfleet’sunderstandingofthecosmos.Builttosurvivelongvoyagesandbeself-sufficientonsurveymissions,theHooverclasswasagreatsuccess.ThoughmanysawactionagainsttheKlingonEmpireandotherthreats,thisclassmostoftensawmulti-yearmissionsnavigatingpreviouslyunmappedsectionsofspaceandbravinghazardousconditionstostudyquasarsandneutronstars.WithinfifteenyearsoftheHoover’slaunch,though,StarfleetlaunchedboththeConstitutionclass(whichcouldtakeonevenlongermissions)andthePalladaclass(whichhadevenbettersciencesystems)andtheHooverclassfelloutofproductionasquicklyasitrose.

Overview:Thecompact,sleek-lookingdesignoftheMalachowskiclasswasintendedtobethefutureoftheFederationwhenitwaslaunched.It’senginedesignandfine-tunedsensorsmadeitidealforsendingonround-tripmissionstointerestingsystemsinStarfleet’sefforttocontinuallypushtheboundariesoftheFederation’smaps.TothedismayoftheMalachowskiengineeringteam,however,barelythreeyearsafterthedesign’slaunchStarfleetannouncedaturntolong-term,five-yearmissions.SmallerdesignsliketheMalachowskiwereshelvedinfavorofmorerobustdesignslikethecelebratedConstitutionclass.AnumberofMalachowski-classvesselswereproduced,however,andthedesignprovedimpressiveenoughthatitremainedinservicewellintothe24thcenturywiththeequallywell-respectedMirandaandCentaurclasses.EventuallytheMalachowskiclasswasreplacedbysimilar,moremoderndesignsliketheSteamrunnerandNorwayclasses.
Capabilities:Smallerthanothershipdesignslaunchedintheearly23rdcentury,theMalachowski-classstarshipmakesupforthiswithspeedandadaptability.DuringthewarwiththeKlingons,manyMalachowski-classvesselsweresenttopatroltheborderandscanforenemymovement,ascoutingrolewhichledtoagreatdealofcustomizationbychiefengineers.FollowingpeacebetweentheKlingonEmpireandtheFederation,thesecustomizationdetailswereformalizedintothefirstofmanyrefitplanstocontinuouslyimprovetheMalachowskidesign.

Overview:Intheearly23rdcentury,hawksinStarfleetCommandinsistedthatthefleetneededdedicatedmilitaryvessels.ManyinStarfleet,nottomentionthebroaderFederation,wereresistantandsogettingtheShepard-classvesselthroughdevelopmentwasatruefeatofcompromiseandnegotiation.TheShepardclasswasneverinwideproduction,afactthatmanylaterregrettedduringtheFederation-KlingonWar.Bythetimeofthatconflict,however,StarfleetwaslaunchingnewmilitaryclassessuchasthePerseus-classescortandRanger-classbattlecruiser.TheShepardclasswasleftasawarshipwithoutawar,producedduringtimesofpeaceandout-of-datewhenwarcame.
