The ‘Cardi Bach’ operated from 2nd July to 25th September (Mondays to Saturdays) between Cardigan to New Quay, passing through Ferwig, Mwnt, Aberporth, Tresaith, Penbryn, Llangrannog and Cwmtydu. The coastal bus operated on a ‘Hail and Ride‘ basis: passengers were picked up or set down at any point along the bus route provided it was safe to do so. Timetable information for the Cardi Bach (service number 600) can be found at the Richard’s Brothers web site: www.gobybus.net The coastal bus offered an environmentally-friendly way of enjoying the spectacular scenery of Cardigan Bay, with its cliff tops, headlands, beaches and secluded coves. The service linked towns, villages and tourist accommodation establishments along this section of coast and provided an easy way to gain access to the coast. It also helped walkers to gain access to coastal footpaths without having to use a car. In addition, the service was devised with cyclists in mind: the coastal bus could carry two bicycles. The Cardi Bach bus service was a pilot project supported under the Ceredigion Coast Path project (Objective 1). The service will be offered again next summer 2005. Rydym i gyd yn syrthiorywbryd neu’i gilydd: byddrhywbeth yn tynnu’n sylw arlawr llithrig neu anwastad, adyna ni, ar wastad ein cefn ary llawr. Ond wrth i ni fynd ynhyn, mae mwy o beryglsyrthio, a gall canlyniadauhynny fod yn fwy difrifol. Nifydd pawb yn dweud eu bodwedi syrthio, ond o’rachosion sy’n cael eu cofnodimae’n ymddangos bod 30% obobl dros 65 oed a 50% obobl dros 85 oed yn syrthio o

Ond mae yna newyddion da ymhlith yr ystadegau trist hyn: galldros hanner yr achosion hyn o syrthio gael eu hatal. MaeFframwaith Gwasanaeth Iechyd Gwladol Cymru ar gyfer Pobl Hynyn defnyddio gwaith ymchwil ac arfer gorau i ddarparu arweiniadclir ar y ffordd y gellir gwneud hyn. Mae hwn:

• yn rhoi cyfrifoldeb i’r rheiny yn y GIG i lunio partneriaethau gydachydweithwyr mewn awdurdodau lleol a’r sector gwirfoddol

• yn gwneud yn glir y dylent fabwysiadu dull deuben ar sail atal syrthio ymhlith y boblogaeth yn gyffredinol, ac ymhlith y rheinysydd eisoes wedi syrthio

• yn darparu rhestr gynhwysfawr o ffactorau perygl i’r person hyn a’i amgylchedd

• yn amlinellu’r triniaethau hynny sydd fwyaf tebygol o fod yn effeithiol. Yn y cyswllt hwn, mae ymarferion cryfder a chydbwysedd a thriniaeth yn bwysig iawn

• yn ein hatgoffa i gyd y bydd angen cefnogaeth cyfnod hir ar boblhyn sydd wedi syrthio

Mae Ymddiriedolaeth Ceredigion a Chanolbarth Cymru wediymateb i’r her drwy lunio Grwp Atal Syrthio rhwng nifer oasiantaethau a disgyblaethau. Tasg y grwp hwn yw gweithreduFframwaith Cenedlaethol y Gwasanaeth Iechyd yn ôl amserlen yCynulliad Cenedlaethol. Ond yn ogystal â llunio’r grwp hwn, mae’rYmddiriedolaeth wedi sefydlu rhaglen lywio i atal syrthio ar gyfery bobl hyn hynny sy’n mynd i Ysbyty Dydd Leri. We all fall from time to time, amoment’s inattention on aslippery or uneven surface andwe find ourselves flat-out onthe ground. But as we get older, the risk of falling increases, andthe consequences of a fallbecome more serious. Manyfalls go unreported, but fromthose that are, it appears that30% of people over 65 and 50%of those over 85 years fall atleast once each year. Thankfullymost falls do not cause life threatening injury, but 10-15% do, oftenin the form of fractures of the hip, spine and pelvis. One olderperson in Wales dies each day as a result of a fall.

But there is good news among these dismal statistics, in that overhalf these falls can be prevented. The forthcoming Wales NationalService Framework for Older People draws on research and bestpractice to provide clear guidance on how this can be done:

• It charges those in the NHS to form partnerships with colleaguesin the Local Authority and voluntary sector.

• It makes clear that they should adopt a two pronged approach based on preventing falls in the population-at-large and in thosewho have already fallen.

• It provides a comprehensive list of risk factors for the older person and their environment.

• It outlines those treatments that are most likely to be effective. In this respect strength and balance training and the treatment ofosteoporosis score highly.

• It reminds us all that older people who have fallen will require long-term support.

The Trust has responded to these challenges by forming a multi-agency, multi-disciplinary Falls Prevention Group. This group istasked with implementing the National Service Framework toWales Assembly deadlines. But as well as forming this group, theTrust has established a pilot falls prevention programme for thoseolder people attending the Leri Day Hospital. The programme willstart at the beginning of September. Further details will appear onthe Trust website www.ceredigion-tr.wales.nhs.uk
