NEW OPPORTUNITY

Another academic year means a new Law Society Committee, and this year the committee is determined to build upon the successful year that the society had in 2015/16. The Law Society is consistently the largest, most active society on campus and wins awards year on year for its activities and engagement with students. Sponsorship is fundamentally important for the society as it helps fund our activities in order to minimise costs to our members. This booklet contains all the relevant information about activities we provide over the year and the sponsorship opportunities available. Our role in a sponsorship relationship is to provide excellent promotion of your firm to Cardiff Law Students, society members and non-members alike. We are confident that the Law Society this year presents a fantastic opportunity to promote your firm. We would be delighted to host any events that would increase this promotion, be it a societal trip to sponsors’ offices or by publicising upcoming deadlines through our emails to students. We have an active social media presence and a strong link with our careers service, and therefore you can be assured that, as a sponsor, your firm will be well publicised around campus. We really look forward to discussing our sponsorship opportunities with you in the coming weeks. I thank you in advance for your time reading this, and your assistance and help throughout the forthcoming year. Alexander Love, President 3

President’s Welcome

Cardiff University Law Society is the centre of Cardiff Law School’s social activities and has a staunch following amongst law students at the University. It currently enjoys a membership of over 550 students and staff, making it the largest society at Cardiff University. The Society aims to enhance the social, education and extra-curricular opportunities for its student members. It acts to organize many social and educational events throughout the year – notably the Commercial awareness award and the annual Law Ball amongst other things. Through being a member of Cardiff University Law Society, you can get involved with employability events, public speaking competitions and mooting competitions in order to enhance your CV and open up various potential career paths. At Cardiff University Law Society, the executive committee’s purpose is to put future’s first. Through offering CV ‘Gold-Dust’ opportunities and organizing unique events that give an insight into the world of law and non-law career paths. 4

A Brief Insight

Our annual law ball, held in March, is the most popular event on campus. Hosted in the beautiful Cardiff City Hall, our students are treated to a champagne reception followed by a three course meal. The black tie event is a different theme each year, with the most recent themes being ‘Great Gatsby’ and ‘Fire and Ice’. Over 300 tickets to the ball sell out within 20 minutes demonstrating the popularity of the event. Our Facebook page saw thousands views on our album of ball photos taken by a professional photographer and therefore shows the great exposure your firm would experience as a sponsor of this event. As a sponsor, we would love for your brand to be on all major materials, including posters, invitations, all social media posts and on the photograph album. We would be open and willing to extend this to any other materials. We are confident that sponsoring these events is an excellent opportunity to promote your firm. 5

Annual Law Ball

The recent Cardiff University internal mooting competition proved to be a great success, with over 50 students taking part. The final took place at the Cardiff Civil Justice Centre in front of HHJ Seys Llewellyn, who was impressed by the performances. Christopher McBride, barrister at Lyons Davidson, also commended the competitors, expressing that ‘all participants were able to stand fast in the face of very learned judicial intervention while defining and tracing their own arguments’. This year we hope to increase involvement in external competitions. We also aim to improve mooting standards by holding sessions on preparing for moot trials and developing the skills required for mooting. As a sponsor, we would like your firm to run at least one of these sessions. This is also an opportunity to advertise your firm at the session(s), and on our social media pages. We also hope to secure the Supreme Court for the final. If successful, a photo of the competitors and the judge will be taken at the Supreme Court, featuring a banner containing your firm’s logo. 6

Mooting Series

Our public speaking series is a collection of highly popular skill development sessions. Students attend presentations from professionals on how they have used public speaking in their careers and how they learnt to improve it, and any top tips they may have. The talk is followed by an opportunity to improve and demonstrate their skills through various workshops. One example of a particularly popular workshop was 'Dragon’s Den' style, where students improvised the sale of a random item placed in front of them. Law school tutors have commented on the impressiveness of this event and have noted the significant increase in confidence amongst participating students. The sessions are always followed by a networking social, where food and drink is laid on for students’ enjoyment. As a sponsor, we would like you to visit and run at least one workshop as part of the event; we believe it is an opportunity for a trainee or member of staff to showcase the excellent experience they have had at your firm and how their experiences have shaped their skills and confidence. Much like our other sponsorship opportunities, your name would actively be promoted alongside the event, and be included in all social media and event posts.

Public Speaking Series

The Commercial Awareness Award consists of a programme of practical and informative events that aim to develop the commercial awareness of members of the Law Society. Students sign up at the start of the year and upon completion of the programme are presented with a certificate. Last year the award proved to be hugely popular, with 30 students completing the award and 80 students attending at least one event. This year we hope to increase participation in the award and broaden the variety of events that make up the award. We would love our sponsors to provide some of the events offered on the award, however we are also looking for a general sponsor for the award who would run frequent events throughout the academic year and host a networking event for those members who achieve the award.

The Commercial Awareness Award

Our weekly newsletter is composed by our Secretary and contains all information relevant to our members, including upcoming events, opportunities and events gone by. The newsletter is automatically sent to our 550+ members and is printed and placed on our notice board. We will also publish it on social media platforms.

Sponsorship of our newsletter will mean your logo will be printed on the banner of each page. It will also include the opportunity to add information as part of the newsletter, which we intend would include information about applications and open days. We would also hope that there could be hints and tips about applications, or a brief blog entry about graduate experiences within the firm. It would therefore be an exclusive way of conveying information to students. Our termly magazine allows students to demonstrate their research and writing skills. Students are able to write an article on any subject they choose and their article will be published online and in a physical magazine which is available to all students. Our students can be proud of their work, and the extent of readership their articles attract. This year we are hoping to see the use of the blog increase and also see a greater number of contributions from students.

As a sponsor of the magazine, your firm will occupy a space within the magazine. Depending on what would suit your firm, this could simply be a logo, or could be your own article or information about the firm and applications. In the past we have had hints and tips from trainees, and micro-blogs about a ‘Day in the life’ and we would be interested in publishing similar this year. 9

Law Society Weekly Newsletter

Unprecedented Magazine and Blog

Our Law Society website is a popular site and is also a very important tool for our members. It is used to view and book events, access photos, publish information and successes of the society, and includes a link to our newsletters and blog. This sponsorship opportunity would see your company’s logo on the home page on the website in full view of all visitors. There would also be a separate page, easily accessible, with a company bio and easy links to websites; the content of this would be completely up to you and could include deadlines and any upcoming events. http://www.cardiffstudents.com/activities/society/law/

Website Sponsorship

Our Law Society sees three teams compete in IMG leagues; football, rugby and netball. Each team has had their own §personal successes, for instance the netball and football clubs boast two full teams and even larger squads, whereas the rugby team were the 2013 champions, and unbeaten across the season. As a sponsor, your logo would occupy the kit of the team, and would therefore be seen by a vast number of the student population. There is always a large amount of publicity surrounding the teams, and as sponsors you would be publicized at all the same points.

Our welcome packs were introduced last year as an enticement and reward for joining our society and were handed to joiners at the Societies Fayre. We filled carrier bags, printed with our logo, with flyers and booklets from our sponsors, as well as freebies from sponsors and more local businesses. They were seen being used throughout the year and they were therefore a huge success. We are seeking sponsors for the welcome packs, primarily through provision of materials and ‘freebies’ to be placed in the packs. We would like to combine this with sponsorship of one of our other opportunities so that your company’s brand is prevalent from the first day and then throughout the year.

Our mentorship scheme saw a revamp and increased success last year. Senior students volunteered themselves to be a mentor and are then organised into families which includes all first years. The student families meet each other and offer support when needed. We discovered this has developed transferable skills, and is valued by students as being an asset to their CV.

As a sponsor, your name would be coupled with the title of the scheme and included on all emails, publications and social media posts. We would also be excited to organise a sponsors’ event for those students who volunteer as mentors, allowing your firm to meet some of the best students. Our membership cards are handed to all members when they join the society. The cards are hard plastic and therefore are elegant and durable. The membership cards enable our members to redeem discounts around the local Cardiff area (which we have arranged). As a sponsor your logo would be prevalent on the card and would therefore be seen regularly by all of our members, and out and about in the Cardiff area more generally.

Our annual Law Society journal is a collection of our students’ finest work. Students opt to write for the journal, and can write up to 5000 words on any subject of their choosing. This publication allows passionate students to showcase their skills such as research, attention to detail, and general articulation. The journal is published in hard-bound covers and all students writing for it, or interested in it, are able to read a copy. There are also numerous editions held in the library, meaning they are attainable by all students. As a sponsor your logo would be prominent on the front cover of the journal, and would allow for an insert within the journal with information regarding your firm. Your name would be prominent whenever we are discussing and publicising the journal. In addition, we would be interested if one of your members of staff would be able to offer tips on how to create such writings and would pass this help on, either through a document, or a skills session where interested students attend. 14

Our clothing is hugely popular amonst our members and can be spotted all over the Cardiff University campus, The clothing available varies between each academic year, and therefore continues to sell well. This year we propose to offer hoodies, sweatshirts and polo shirts to all students, and believe the sweatshirts and polo shirts will be particularly popular. Sponsorship will see your logo in a prominent position on the clothing, most probably the back (although this is open to negotiation). The full branding will be viewable and will therefore be seen across the city, by society members and also other students.

Clothing Sponsorship

After a tough three-year degree, both the Law School and the Society feel that people’s efforts should be recognised and appreciated. For the past few years we have thrown successful graduation parties, which have celebrated individual efforts of students. The evening has included awards, and also drinks and canapés.

As a sponsor you would be on the invitations and the tickets, and included in all social media publications. There would be an opportunity for networking with graduates, and also for students from all years to see your name on photos and social media posts.

Graduation Party

This year the Committee are incredibly proud to introduce the newest addition to the Law Society portfolio – the Charity Sports Day. We are hoping to run this event at the end of the second term, around April time. The event will be aimed at all members of the law society, regardless of sporting prowess. We therefore propose playing the traditional events in the morning (football, rugby and netball) and in the afternoon hosting some ‘softer’ events that all members can be involved in (Egg and spoon race, sack race, wheelbarrow race etc.) Given that this is first time we have run such an event, the specifics of the location of the event, and activities to be run on the day are still very much up for discussion. As a sponsor, your name would be prominent on all promotional material. How it would appear would be up for discussion. Additionally, in your role as sponsor we would appreciate your advice and support in running the event, and we would be keen to discuss the appropriate charity to run the event for. We think that this offers an excellent promotional opportunity, but could also offer an excellent networking opportunity for both the law society and your firm, should employees from your firm wish to join us on the day! We very much look forward to working with you to make this an unmissable event for our members!
