Welcome to the latest edition of the Cardno BEC Update, our annual newsletter showcasing the projects and people highlights of the past year.

2014 was certainly a year of change, not only for Cardno BEC but for our industry as well.

In July, I took over as Division Manager from Geoff Bailey, following his decision to step down into a technical role after more than 18 years of service. Geoff has been the driving force behind the success of BEC Engineering and Cardno BEC. I thank him for his contribution and look forward to leading the team to further success in the years to come.

Challenging market conditions during 2014 necessitated a change in our business, and while we have maintained our core expertise and focus, we have adapted our service offering to better meet changing market needs.

Cardno BEC prides itself on its ability to innovate and some of our successes this year reflect this, offering new services and solutions for clients and expanding into new regions and markets.

In Australia, new project opportunities were identified in non-traditional sectors of renewables, defence, transport and infrastructure, while overseas, West Africa, Papua New Guinea and the Philippines continue to be a major source of project work.

I would like to thank the entire team for their tremendous efforts and contribution throughout 2014, and also to you, our clients, for your continued support.

On behalf of Cardno BEC, we look forward to working with you in 2015.

Yaramoko Project In mid 2014, Cardno BEC commenced initial work on the electrical design package for the Yaramoko Project in a joint venture with Mintrex. The JV is currently completing the design of the processing plant owned by Roxgold Incorporated.

The Yaramoko Project, a key asset for Roxgold, covers an area of approximately 190 square kilometres in the Hounde greenstone belt of Burkino Faso, West Africa and has an expected annual gold production of around 100,000 ounces. Designed as a carbon-in-leach operation, the processing plant will have an average mill feed grade of 11.59 g/t and recoveries in the vicinity of 97 per cent over the estimated seven-and-a-half-year life span of the operations.

The specific scope for Cardno BEC on the Project is to provide the electrical design for the 90/11kV sub-station, processing plant and the site infrastructure.

Design for the project includes the HV power system reticulation, with power for the project being drawn from the local grid. The major load on the system will be from the 1.5MW ball mill.

Cardno BEC’s responsibilities also include LV design and reticulation of the wet plant, with associated controls and automation. Plant automation is achieved via a Citect SCADA system on top of a network of GE Fanuc PLCs.

The project is scheduled for completion in the second half of 2015.

Tropicana GoldOver the past three years Cardno BEC has been assisting the Tropicana Joint Venture in the

development of their Tropicana mining operations in Western Australia.

Situated 330 kilometres east-northeast of Kalgoorlie, the Tropicana pit is the first of four pits, to be developed as part of the Tropicana Gold Project, a joint

venture between AngloGold Ashanti Australia Ltd and Independence Group NL.

Cardno BEC has been involved in the project since 2011, when we undertook the design and commissioning of the electrical and control systems for the ball mill.

Since then we have completed a power study and the initial electrical design for the Minigwal bore field.

During 2014, Cardno BEC completed an extension project at the bore fields, providing the power supply design, power line connections and the SCADA system design along with telemetry for 15 new bore stations. This included the implementation of a leak detection system and bore level, and pressure monitoring as part of the instrumentation design.

The bore fields project was part of a number of brownfields project upgrades being completed at the Tropicana operations in which Cardno BEC partnered Mintrex.

As the operation grows and the remaining pits are brought into operation over coming years, Cardno BEC looks forward to assisting the Tropicana JV with further electrical engineering needs.

The overall operation has an expected mine life of more than 11 years.

Costancia GoldIn late 2014, Cardno BEC was engaged by Ausenco to provide engineers for the site commissioning of grinding mills at the new Costancia Gold Mine located in the Andes Mountains in southern Peru.

Initial production from Costancia is expected in late 2014, with full production targeted for the second quarter of 2015. Annual production of 118,000t annually at a cost of $0.66/lb of copper is planned during the first five years of operation. The project has a life of 16 years.

Cardno BEC personnel are on-site providing commissioning for the four, high-voltage, dual-drive grinding mills and auxiliary systems. The mills are 14MW each in power draw.

Cardno BEC has a long history of providing grinding mill designs and commissioning, and has worked with Ausenco on numerous projects globally.

CETO5 Operational SupportDuring the year, Cardno BEC won a 12-month site support contract for the CETO5 facility on Garden Island for the provision of

electrical engineering and control systems support.

The work includes: assistance with electrical connection of the facility to the Department of Defence power supply grid; setup of a remote monitoring and support access to the control system; setup of a central facility at Carnegies office for the remote transfer of data; and troubleshooting and maintenance support of power generation equipment, hydraulic systems, ABB 800 DCS, National Instruments subsea data acquisition system, and water treatment facility.

This award continues a working partnership that Cardno BEC has had with Carnegie since the commencement of their CETO5 wave generation project.

Laser Partially Dumped Ore Car Detection SystemCardno BEC has been awarded the contract to supply and install the laser partially dumped ore

car (LPDOC) detection system at Rio Tinto’s Cape Lambert Port B Dumpers 6 and 7. This follows on from the successful installation at Car Dumper 5, which was the first trial installation for Rio Tinto.

3

The system, developed by Cardno BEC, uses laser scanners to inspect the inside of each ore car as they exit the car dumper to ensure they are empty. Cars with ore remaining have the potential to derail causing damage and costly delays.

The award is the eighth for Cardno BEC, and represents an important milestone for the system, now being fully adopted by both BHP Billiton and Rio Tinto.

Ok Tedi Mine Project Engineering Support For the past five years Cardno BEC has been working with Ok Tedi Mining to provide project engineering services to their

operations in PNG. This continued during 2014 with several high-value projects being awarded to Cardno BEC.

In February, Cardno BEC was awarded the continuation of the DCS support role for the Ok Tedi Mine, in the Western Province of PNG. This support involved upgrading and eliminating faults in the software and wiring, all while maintaining service to keep the mill running.

This project was followed in April with the appointment of Cardno BEC by Ok Tedi Tabubil to provide PLC and DCS support for Stage 1 of a mine optimisation engineering project, which included design drafting, and testing and programming, at the Ok Tedi mine.

Stage 2 followed in June 2014 with Cardno BEC being awarded the pre-commissioning, site commissioning works and project management services for the Ok Tedi Tabubil PLC and DCS Support project.

This is a great example of the value-add Cardno can bring to projects in providing full-time support and ensuring continuous operation with limited outages.

Nammuldi Below Water Table Project CommissioningAdding to our relationship with Rio Tinto Iron Ore, which has been in place for a number of

years, Cardno BEC was engaged during 2014 to provide control systems engineers for commissioning activities at Rio Tinto’s Nammuldi site for a mine process plant being built by Crushing Services International (CSI).

Cardno BEC is providing five site engineers for commissioning of a Modicon PLC and Wondeware SCADA system for the crushing, screening and conveying facility to double the size of CSI’s team and assist in meeting the key ore delivery dates in the project schedule.

Pouyan Khaki Achieves CPEng and RPEQ StatusCongratulations to Pouyan Khaki, Cardno BEC Electrical Engineer based in Brisbane, who this month received CPEng and RPEQ status.

In Queensland, professional engineers must be registered to provide professional engineering services, unless working under the direct supervision of an RPEQ. Achieving CPEng and RPEQ status is no mean feat, and requires applicants to prepare career and competency records,

provide submissions for assessments, do a professional presentation, and be interviewed by a panellist of professional engineers and the Engineers Australia Assessor.

Congratulations again to Pouyan on this significant achievement.

Melbourne Cup Lunch As we all know, the first Tuesday in November is when the Nation STOPS, including all at Cardno BEC, to watch the biggest race of the year. Getting into the spirit, we set up our own automated TAB thanks to the genius of Rick Di Filippo, with Vicky and Jo taking bets of up to $20 from both staff and invited clients, prior to the race. To top the day off, we also enjoyed platters of delicious food, a few drinks and shared stories for the remainder of the afternoon.

Taking top prize in the sweep this year were Sheila Ecroygnard and Bruce Johnson in equal place. Congratulations to one of our clients on taking fourth place.

A BIG thank you to Val, Jo an Vicky for organising the day’s festivities.

Chocolate Wheel and Charity EventsAt the end of each month, Cardno BEC employees enjoy a charitable fundraising event with a few drinks and nibbles, and the spinning of

our chocolate wheel. Raffle tickets are sold on the day and everyone has a great chance of winning some generous prizes, including gift vouchers, champagne and chocolates. Fiona (pictured below right) was one of many winners of the Cardno BEC chocolate wheel.

In addition to our chocolate wheel fundraising this year, we also hosted a Biggest Morning Tea in May, sponsored Michael Renshaw, Cardno’s CEO in the CEO Sleep Out, and raised money for the RSPCA by hosting a Cup Cake Day, where the ladies in the office kindly made cupcakes to sell to staff and visitors.

Cardno BEC appreciates the contribution of employees to these sociable charity events, giving everyone the opportunity to support a worthy cause and enjoy each other’s company.

We are delighted to say that we raised several thousand dollars in 2014 and some of the charities to benefit this year include, the Cancer Council, RSPCA, Typhoon Haiyan Appeal, Movember and the Red Cross to celebrate 100 years of “people helping people”
