Course Description
Auto I—Students learn the basic knowledge and skills
necessary to diagnose and repair mechanical defects in
automobiles and light trucks. The program includes the
study of brakes, computerized wheel alignment, steering
suspension, air conditioning, and maintenance proce-
dures. Students study the theory of operation and
maintenance for transmissions, diesel and gasoline en-
gines, and drive lines. Students must be able to read
and comprehend technical journals and repair manuals.
Purchase of a basic tool kit is required. NATEF (National
Automotive Technicians Education Foundation end-of-
course assessments will be required for students en-
rolled in this course.
Auto II—Automotive Technology II is a continuation
of all areas covered in Auto I in much greater depth.
Students are introduced to electrical and electronic sys-
tems. Emphasis is placed on customer relations, em-
ployer expectations relating to work habits and job atti-
tude and accuracy of diagnosis and repair. Students
take part in a job orientation program. Students recom-
mended by their instructor may be eligible for place-
ment in an on-the-job training program with a local em-
ployer during the second semester.

certification standards and the
National Automotive Technicians
Education Foundation (NATEF)
standards. The NATEF accreditation
model is being updated and
broadened to include all eight
certification areas: Suspension and
Steering, Brakes, Electrical/Electronic
Systems, Engine Performance, Engine
Repair, Heating and Air Conditioning,
Automat ic T ransmiss ion and
Transaxle, and Manual Drive Train.

Technology Program is being
reconfigured to fully align with the
new NATEF model. Each course is
aligned to industry requirements for
certification and success in the field.
The end-of-course assessment
provides students the opportunity to
earn an ASE Student Achievement
Certificate and college credit.

Students completing the Auto Technology
Program may receive up to ten credits in the
general Automotive Program at the
Community College of Baltimore County
Catonsville Campus
CTE courses are taught at Parkside High School. Students
begin their CTE experience in most programs by enrolling in
the ATEX (Applied Technology Exploration) introductory
course to find out more about the Maryland CTE State Ap-
proved Programs of Study that are offered. Students in grades
9 or 10 may enroll in an ATEX course to find out more about
the opportunities that CTE courses may offer. If you need
