Tips for Making the Most of the Career & Internship Expo

Prepare a short introduc�on. Include your name, major, skills, and area of interest. Focus! Concentrate on the list you prepped; start at the top and work your way down. Demonstrate professionalism. Be pa�ent and polite; you will likely have to wait to speak with a recruiter. Use your �me well. Prac�ce good �me management (allocate your �me wisely) and create realis�c goals. Next steps. A�er speaking with a recruiter, ask them about the next steps (this includes ge�ng their business card). Should you apply for the posi�on(s) online or by email? Take notes. Jot down notes about the conversa�on to remind yourself what was discussed. Note any informa�on that may be helpful to include in your thank you leter. Follow-up. Send a thank you note or e-mail to each recruiter you met with. Engage in next steps. Follow the recommenda�ons the recruiter offered during your conversa�on. Ask Ques�ons: This is your chance to ask some ques�ons. Asking good ques�ons will leave a good impression and show your interest and enthusiasm. The following may serve as a guideline for ques�ons:

• What are the day-to-day responsibili�es of the posi�on? • What are some typical career paths and advancement opportuni�es? • Is there an orienta�on or training for new employees? • What are the long-range plans for the organiza�on? • Expecta�ons regarding travel and/or reloca�on expenses • Mul�cultural diversity and sensi�vity • Geographical area – cost of living, housing, and schools • Hiring process/�meline • How you should follow-up

• About salary or benefits • About job pressures, over�me, or morale

Following Up: A�er the Career Expo ends, send a thank you leter within 24-48 hours. A typed leter is considered the most professional. In many situa�ons, an email is appropriate if the organiza�on indicated that this is their preferred method of contact or if there is a quick turnaround �me requirement to fill the posi�on. A hand-writen note is considered more personal. Your leter should be brief (no longer than one page) and include the following:

• Thank the interviewer for their �me and the chance to learn more about the organiza�on. • Reaffirm your interest and enthusiasm for a posi�on with the organiza�on.


• Men�on something from your conversa�on to remind the interviewer who you are. Reiterate any important points that were discussed or that you were not able to express during your interview.

• Describe in one or two sentences why your skills, experience, and background make you the best candidate.

If you do not hear from the recruiter by the date that was promised, it would be appropriate to call or email the recruiter (unless candidates are asked not to do so) and inquire about the status.
