GED Preparation Ms. Casey
It’s been a successful first quarter for Career & Tech’s GED Preparation students. The vast majority of the class made either
merit or honor roll (many for the first time in their lives). Most students have done well across the curriculum, with significant improvement being demonstrated in math, reading, writing, science, and critical thinking.
A true sense of community has formed in the classroom, with several students citing the GED class as one of the things they
were most grateful for this Thanksgiving. The class has gelled around their class projects, such as memoir writing and financially mapping out desired futures – work that they are quite proud of. Activities such as our afternoon of team building exercises on BOCES’ ropes course, class trip to the Museum of Natural History in NY City, Halloween celebration, guest lecturer and continued recognition of books read outside of school, have all helped to create a class where the students are both engaged and supportive of one another.
At the recent parent-teacher conferences, every student attended with their parent or guardian. At these conferences,
we began the process of mapping out the specific path that each GED Preparation student will travel after they earn their GED. For many, this path will take them to a local community college or trade school. For others, it will lead directly to the work force. Wherever their futures may lead, it was exciting to begin to look, in detail, at how each student can build upon their current successes. As always, it is exciting and inspiring to witness the students of the GED Prep class – often against formidable barriers – turn their previous setbacks into the fuel for a brighter future.

ClassMate Parent Portal Up and Running CTE parents can now look at up-to-the-minute data on their sons and daughters in Career & Tech programs. The ClassMate Parent Portal is open, with information on grades, discipline and attendance for each student. Parents filled out forms verifying email and other information needed for their connections. With grades calculated daily in the system, parents can look at the daily work ethic grades, quiz scores and skills. A link on the SC BOCES webpage makes it even easier for parents to check in from any computer or location. CTE staff saw an actual Parent Portal page at the November staff meeting. Construction Tech teacher Bill Drasher showed CTE staff what it looks like from a parent’s view. His daughter attends the Health Occupations Advanced program and is an Eldred high school junior. Luckily for her, there were no discipline referrals to view. Career and Tech continues to utilize a new feature of the ClassMate system each school year. We are currently in our fifth year with the student data management system.

Alternative Education: Academics After first quarter progress reports were submitted, data was collected to determine pass/fail rates. A PROACTIVE plan was formulated for each student failing classes. This plan included the following:
one-on-one tutoring small groups peer tutoring after school tutoring parent contact; and assistance in completing homework and/or owed work.
First quarter report cards showed significant growth in the pass rates in grades ten, eleven, and twelve. Below is a chart, by district reflecting this success. This process will be repeated again with each submission of progress reports.

Alternative Education: Graduate Corner
Serena Gregory, a 2009 Eldred graduate with an advanced Regents diploma and CNA certification from Health Occupations, recently stopped for a visit. Serena is currently attending SCCC in the Registered Nursing program and working as a CNA at a nursing home in Milford, PA. Her career goal is to work in a Neonatal Intensive Care Unit. Serena attributes some of her success in the Alternative Program to staff pushing her, the individual attention and not letting her get away with things that were unproductive. During a math class at SCCC, Serena found herself struggling. After contacting former Alt. Ed. teacher, Janet Moglia for some additional help, Serena is in turn helping her fellow students with the Math content in her SCCC class.
Zach Shaffer, a 2009 Eldred graduate also stopped by the Alternative School to say hello and let us know how he was doing. He informed us that he is currently attending Sullivan County Community College and is enrolled in Liberal Arts classes. He has maintained contact with Alternative School graduates and staff. He, like Serena attributes his current success to the Alternative Program here at SC BOCES.
