The economy is in a slump. Layoffs are common. Money and jobs are scarce. While afinancial crisis can send some people into a panic, others face it head on and use it asjust another reason to push themselves further.

Back in the early 1980s, during a similar recession, a young accounting student who graduatedfrom Mississippi State University decided to increase his value on the job market by goingback to school. While John Ray was already working for a small accounting firm at the time,he figured his accounting and tax background combined with a law degree might open somenew doors as a tax lawyer. A few years later, he was practicing both criminal and civil law.

Eager to please the partners at his law firm, John Ray would show up at the office at 5a.m., regardless if there was work to do or not. On slow days, when he wasn’t preparing orfiling legal briefs, John Ray decided to challenge himself further and started writing a novelabout the cases that affected him the most. Unfortunately, that novel was rejected by dozensof publishers. But John Ray became a very successful lawyer and still practices today.

John Ray didn’t quit. He persevered. And that’s what you have to do during these tougheconomic times.

This issue of Career Insider Accounting looks at the reality that faces graduating studentsand those still in school. While the economy has made things grim, there is a silver lining.

Di-rect entry into their program ofprofessional studies at the Profes-sional Applications and CompetencyEvaluations (PACE) level is availableto Ontario university students whohold qualifying bachelor degrees andwho have completed specific electivecourses.

Qualified graduating students whoenter at the PACE level need only tocomplete two courses — ProfessionalPractice and Strategic Financial —that are conducted online over thecourse of 10 weeks, and pass four na-tional exams to earn their CGA des-ignation. The program offers 14different career specialties fromwhich to choose, spanning every in-dustry including corporate enter-prises of all sizes, informationtechnology, government positionsand the not-for-profit sector.

Union Gas Becomes Approved CA Training GroundAspiring chartered accountants insouthern Ontario now have anotheremployer to send their resumé. TheInstitute of Chartered Accountants ofOntario recently approved Union Gasto hire up to a dozen students to workat the Chatham-based company. Thecompany will train students who wantto become chartered accountants butprefer to start their career in industry.The move by the Canadian Instituteof Chartered Accountants (CICA) toexpand CA training grounds took ef-fect in 2007 as an effort to attractmore students to the designation. Stu-dents who hope to earn their CA des-ignation at Union Gas will still have topass the UFE.

No Limits Conference on November 12thThe Institute of Chartered Account-ants of Ontario is hosting its next NoLimits conference on Thursday, No-vember 12th. The event will take placein the Desmarais Building at the Uni-versity of Ottawa. The conference isfor Ottawa-area high school studentsinterested in a career in the businessworld. Many economists are calling it the deep-est global downturn since the GreatDepression. Jobs are scarcer and tens

of thousands of Canadians are losing their jobsevery month. Some students were having ahard time finding work this past summer asthe jobs they normally filled were taken by theunemployed trying to make ends meet.

Meanwhile, employers that have tradition-ally hired graduating accounting students havenot been immune. They are adjusting to its ef-fects by keeping only the best and brightestand finding other ways of cutting costs.

But their cuts are ensuring that new entry-levelpositions are still available. Most employers aremaintaining their hiring targets for 2010, and thenumbers are similar to those in previous years.

Accounting firms say business has been con-stant in their audit practice and their transac-tion and advisory services — that deal withcorporate restructuring — are in demand.

In fact, accounting firms are looking beyondtoday’s economic slump and thinking aboutthe needs they will have five years from nowwhen the economy should have recovered, andwhen leadership roles will have to be filled.

“Planning ahead is always challenging be-cause you want to make sure you have theright number of employees,” says TaraWinslow, campus recruiting lead for Deloitte.“Fortunately, the audit and tax practice is verypredictable, and haven’t really seen any dipsrelative to the numbers we’ve hired in previ-ous years. We’re hiring the same number ofpeople this year as we did the year before.Graduating students are a key part of ourworkforce. They are the people who will be-come partners ten years down the road. Wewill never stop recruiting on campus. It ishow we build and retain our workforce.”

young staff accountants with thisknowledge will be quite busy in theyears to come.

“Students who are learning the newIFRS requirements at university arevery fortunate relative to accountantswho have to pick it up on a piecemealbasis,” says Len Brooks, executive di-rector of the Clarkson Centre forBusiness Ethics at the Rotman Schoolof Management, and director of theMaster of Management & Profes-sional Accounting program at theUniversity of Toronto. “LearningIFRS fresh rather than having to putaside long years of practicing old-fashioned GAAP gives students an ad-vantage. Our most recent graduatesare better prepared than ever before,and are regarded by employers as of-fering lower risk and higher rewardthan experienced accountants whomay be looking for work.”

Meanwhile, some business sectorsare also surviving in this economy.People are staying home and cookingmore comfort foods, so club stores,grocery chains, and food and beveragecompanies are prospering.

“Our hiring is based on our busi-ness needs and we’re doing well inthis economy,” says Lori Pitre, humanresources manager, recruitment forKraft Canada. “Student recruitment isa key strategy for us because it helpsbuild our talent pipeline. We’re stillmoving forward with our internshipprograms and plan to connect withstudents on campus.”

Canadian banks have also fared rel-atively well in this recession due toCanada’s more stringent regulations.They helped prevent the near financialmeltdown that took place in the U.S.

As such, banks like the Bank ofMontreal are also hiring, and fillingpositions in their capital markets sectorand their commercial business arm.

“We are always interested in peoplewho are studying business and ac-counting, and who hope to take theskills they have learned in school andapply them to the banking world,”says Karen Hartley, senior vice presi-dent of recruitment and intake for theBank of Montreal. “There are a lot ofopportunities within our bank be-cause we promote people up through

the ranks, even if they start off as acustomer service rep.”

There are also many jobs availablein the civil service. Public Works andGovernment Services Canada(PWGSC) will also be active on cam-puses this fall. They attend careerfairs as part of their recruitment activ-ities that help maintain their staff lev-els as Baby Boomers approachretirement age. Roughly a quarter oftheir staff will be eligible to retireover the next five years.

“Our departmental managers alsohold information sessions on specificcareer opportunities within PWGSC,and the public service as a whole,”says Diane Lorenzato, assistantdeputy minister, human resourcesbranch for PWGSC. “We’re alwayslooking for individuals from varied

backgrounds to fill positions such asfinancial officers, computer analysts,engineers, program officers, and com-pensation advisors.”

The PWGSC is also continuing itspopular Financial Officer Recruit-ment and Development (FORD) program. It recruits entry-level can-didates who are earning a profes-sional accounting designation andtrains them over the course of twoyears. This training leads to jobswithin the Office of the ComptrollerGeneral that helps the federal gov-ernment meet its financial commit-ments through accounting, financial

planning and analysis, and depart-mental audits.

Maintaining staffing levels is alsowhy many organizations have not cutback on their summer jobs and intern-ships, as their recruiting efforts mustcontinue despite the economy.

As such, the current economic cli-mate has not stopped the many on-campus recruitment events that takeplace every fall, and even some large-scale events and conferences.

This past summer, Ernst & Youngheld their fourth annual summer lead-ership program.

“Our leadership conference is atwo-day event where we bring poten-tial candidates into our offices, havethem meet every level of employeefrom our different practices, introducethem to our partners, and hold work-shops,” says Leigh Carter, campus re-cruiting leader for Ernst & Young.“We also sent 140 of our summer in-terns to Orlando, Florida for a four-day conference this summer as part of

an international leadership confer-ence. These are activities that have al-ways taken place and are continuing totake place even during this economy.”

Mentoring and training programshave also been unaffected, as thesehave been traditionally important tofirms, as they help ensure their staff isproperly trained.

Meanwhile, some parts of the coun-try are doing better than others. Cal-gary is doing relatively well despite therecession and it continues to be thefocal point of Canada’s oil industry.

“Imperial Oil is initiating a majornew oil sands project called Kearl andsupporting Hebron – another new,east coast project. Our need for peopleduring this economic downturn is re-lated to these projects,” says MeghanMcCormick, recruitment manager forImperial Oil. “We take a long-termview when assessing and planning ourbusiness opportunities. Our approachto recruitment is no different. We be-lieve the continuous renewal of our

workforce is essential to our long-term success.”

Graduates who are willing to travelare finding even more opportunitiesavailable to them. Some studentswhose resumés show a propensity foradventure — they have relocated forwork, gone to a school far away fromhome, or are passionate about travel-ing — are also being courted with of-fers to work further afield.

“We value flexibility in our associ-ates, and are always looking for youngpeople who are open-minded andwilling to try new things to developtheir skills. This could mean movingto another office in another city, ormoving from one part of the firm toanother,” says Christine Gillespie, di-rector of human resources for Price-waterhouseCoopers.

You’ve always dreamed abouttaking the accounting worldby storm and believed your

confidence and grades would beenough to take you there. But theeconomy is in a slump and that cre-ates a whole new reality.

While jobs are still available, you’renot just competing against your class-mates for these coveted spots, butagainst experienced accountants whohave been downsized and hungry forwork. But fear not. There are manythings you can do starting today thatwill get you noticed and help you getahead of the pack.

START EARLYIt’s never too early to start thinkingabout your future career as an ac-countant, even if you’ve just finishedhigh school.

“You should attend the fall recruit-ing events at your school even ifyou’re only a first year-student be-cause they give you a chance to net-work with the recruiters who arealways scouting for talent,” says SaimaKazi, a recent graduate of York Uni-versity’s Schulich School of Businesswho now works as a financial analystat Kraft Canada. “While you certainlywon’t be offered a job when you’restill in your first year, the recruiterswho come back year after year willtake notice of you and your interest,and there’s a very good chance theywill offer you an interview for a sum-mer job.”

Most recruiting events and careerfairs happen in the fall, so you should

also be on the look out for smallerevents that take place in the winter se-mester and the summer. These tendto be less crowded, and often allowyou to have more one-on-one facetime with recruiters and potential em-ployers.

DO YOUR RESEARCHWhile things are definitely more com-petitive these days, you should stillfocus your efforts on the three or fourplaces where you would like to work.

Finding a full-time job is hardwork, and you don’t want to diluteyour efforts by spending valuable timecontacting too many employers whenyou could be targeting the ones whereyou can really see yourself launchingyour career.

Doing so will require you do someresearch to learn as much as you canabout the many employers that arehiring accountants. Specifically, youwill want to explore: an organiza-tion’s corporate culture; the industrysectors you might be working in;whether a company offers any sup-port when it comes to you pursuing adesignation; and the kinds of benefitsthey offer.

Employers can quickly tell the dif-ference between students who arekeen and interested in joining theirorganization, and those who are justlooking for a job. They want to makesure the students they hire will fitinto their corporate environment andtend to hire the most enthusiastic ofthe bunch.

“On the surface, a lot of firms lookthe same, but there are definitelythings that distinguish them fromeach other, so you will want to do yourresearch,” says Cordie Wilson, GTAcampus recruitment coordinator forPricewaterhouseCoopers. “Studentsshould get to know the firms and fig-ure out what they like specificallyabout each one of them. When stu-dents tell me that we’re their topchoice, and give me specific reasonswhy, it really makes them stand out.We want to hire the people who knowwhy they want to be here.”

COMMUNICATION IS KEYYour resumé defines your experiencesand who you are, and gives employersa chance to know something aboutyou before actually meeting you. Somake sure you’ve put some thoughtinto properly preparing your resumébefore you use it to apply for a job.

A resumé should include your edu-cation, your work experience, and anyrelevant extra-curricular activities youmay have. It also has to be absolutelyperfect. It should be proofed againand again for typos. You don’t want togive an employer the impression thatyou do not pay attention to details.

“A lot of career centres have excel-lent resources that teach studentswhat makes a good resumé and coverletter. But the key is to include any-thing that is relevant to the account-ing profession, such as any accountingexperience, or experience working in acorporate environment,” says WillChristensen, a campus recruitmentmanager for Deloitte in Calgary. “Agood resumé should also includewhen you expect to graduate and yourcurrent GPA. I always tell students toinclude their GPA because it is a quickindication of their potential, but it isjust one of the things we look at.”

You should always make sure thatyour resumé is up to date, and alwaysbring a few copies with you when at-tending a recruiting event. You neverknow if a potential employer will askto see it.

Also, make sure you include a coverletter when an employer asks you tosend them your resumé.

While a cover letter should explain

why you are sending your resumé andthe job you are applying for, high-lights your background and work ex-perience, and states exactly whatyou’re sending them – your resumé,transcript, a letter of recommendation– it should be addressed to a specificperson and tailored to the employeryou are sending it to.

“Employers like to hear from po-tential employees that share commoninterests. In my case, it was a fondnessfor technology,” says Mark Chester-man, a financial analyst for Researchin Motion and recent graduate fromthe University of Western Ontario.“They don’t want to see a standard-ized, generic resumé or cover letter.So show them that you’ve done yourresearch, and focus on any commongoals you can think of when writingyour cover letter.”

You should also consider printingbusiness cards that you can hand outduring networking events, careerfairs, and recruiting sessions. Asidefrom being a great networking tooland giving recruiters something elseto remember you by, having a businesscard suggests that you understand thebasics of networking and professionalcorporate behaviour.

A good business card should in-clude your name, phone number andemail address.

While a stack of 500 cards will onlycost you between $30 and $50 at yourlocal office supply store, you can alsofind some affordable deals online.However, investing in a high qualityand memorable business card is an in-vestment in your career.

You should also be up to date oncurrent events and trends within theaccounting profession, as this showspotential employers that you are aninformed individual, and may evengive you an anecdote or two to use asan icebreaker.

ATTITUDE IS EVERYTINGIf you’ve never attended a recruitingevent before, you might want to talkto students who have already met re-cruiters at past events so you knowwhat to expect.

Then, visualize yourself there andthink about what you will do, how youwill act, who you will approach, andwhat you will say.

“There’s no need to be shy. Mostrecruiters are extremely approach-able and easy to talk to,” saysRichard Stuart, who recently gradu-ated from the University of BritishColumbia’s Diploma in AccountingProgram and now works as a staff ac-countant at Ernst & Young. “Youshould ask someone to play the partof the recruiter so you can practiceasking and answering questions.This will make your conversationsflow more naturally.”

When going to an event, makesure to dress professionally andwear what you would wear to a jobinterview, as most recruiting eventsare really informal job interviews.Make sure to talk to everyone in at-tendance regardless of their rankwithin their organization, and handout your business cards to everyoneyou meet.

You should also note the name ofwhom you are talking to, as anyoneyou connect with can become a valu-able ally later on.

“If you feel you’re getting alongwell with a staff member that’s there,don’t feel the need to rush the con-versation to talk to someone else,”says Nick Kaplan, a student at theUniversity of Toronto’s Master of

Management and Professional Ac-counting program who has com-pleted a co-op term with KPMG.“Recruiting coordinators typicallyask for input from all staff at theseevents. Know who you talked to be-cause you might want to drop theirname when you contact the lead re-cruiter in the future.”

You will also want to make sure thatyou listen actively and attentively toeveryone who is speaking with you,that you never interrupt someonewhen they are talking, that you alwaysmake eye contact with the personspeaking, and that you comment onwhat they’ve said to show them thatyou’ve been listening.

You should also feel free to speakabout your accomplishments with asense of pride, and project confi-dence while doing so, but you haveto be careful to not come cross astoo eager.

“While it is important to be profes-sional, you should also try to connectwith a recruiter or interviewer on a

personal level. You have to learn howto make appropriate small talk, soyour personality and interests comethrough,” says Simon Fraser Univer-sity student James Proctor who spenthis summer interning at KPMG. “Youwant to make the people you meet feelcomfortable with the idea of workingwith you each day.”

These events also provide you withthe opportunity to ask a lot of ques-tions. While you will already havedone your research and have an ideaof where you might want to work,you should use these recruitingevents to interview your potentialemployer so you can get a better ideaabout them.

“Ask questions that are engagingand intelligent. Use these events tolearn about the challenges people facein their roles, and what they like anddislike about their workplace,” saysChris Firka, a financial analyst forManulife Financial and a recent grad-uate from the University of OntarioInstitute of Technology.

FOLLOW-UPRecruiters will speak with hundreds ofstudents each day, and visit severalschools every week in the fall. Sowhile they might have your resuméand business card on file, you don’twant to get lost in the shuffle.

So follow up the next morning witha short one-paragraph email, or mailthe recruiter a short note or “thankyou” card.

“Following up with people after-wards shows how much you really wantthe job, and recruiters are more likelyto choose someone with initiative thana person who is less proactive,” saysMireille Dimitry, a financial analyst forTransport Canada who recently gradu-ated from Concordia University’s JohnMolson School of Business.

Make sure to mention some of thethings you discussed and connectedon, as you thank the recruiter for tak-ing the time to meet with you. Goodmanners and etiquette still go a verylong way, and will definitely put youahead of the pack.

Craig Hannaford’s expertise inforensic accounting andcomputer sciences made him atop cop within the RCMP’scommercial and computercrimes sections where heworked for over 24 years. Today,he heads up the privateinvestigations firm of HannafordPartners that helps companiesuncover and prevent financialcrimes. He recently spoke withCareer Insider Accounting abouthis work with the RCMP, someof the cases he has worked on,the importance of anaccounting designation, what ittakes to become a forensicaccountant, and how he informsthe public about scams onFraud Squad TV.

You spent just over 24 years with theRCMP before starting your own in-vestigations company that special-izes in forensic accounting andfinancial crime prevention training.What did you do in the RCMP?After I graduated from the RCMPAcademy in Regina, I worked at anumber of police detachments inManitoba as a constable. I eventuallygot transferred to the commercialcrimes section in Winnipeg.

I had always wanted to work in thecommercial crime section because Ithought it would be interesting tounravel the crimes some businesspeople committed, but I also realizedthat I would need an accounting des-ignation to do so. That’s why I startedto earn my CGA designation while Iwas still a police officer in Manitoba.It really opened the door to that partof my career.

How did the CGA designationhelp you with your career?My CGA designation absolutelyhelped me with my career, and even after leaving the RCMP it continuesto tell people you’re an accountingprofessional and that you’ve hadsome training. It gives you some in-stant credibility. You still have toprove yourself, but it differentiatesyourself from someone who doesn’thave that background.

You also have a background in com-puter science. How did this helpyou in your career path?I was promoted to corporal andjoined the RCMP’s computer inves-tigative support division in Ottawa,where we looked for evidence in thecomputers that were seized duringinvestigations.

This was a great opportunity be-cause I was one of the first investiga-tors assigned to computer forensicsat around the time when personalcomputers were just starting to be-come commonplace, and the biggesthard drives were no larger than 20or 40 megabytes. We would spendour days looking for deleted files orfile fragments, or breaking pass-words to view personal agendas.

I worked in this division for aboutthree or four years, then took a leaveof absence to work with a forensicaccounting firm in Toronto. A yearor so later, I returned to the RCMPand joined their commercial crimesection in Toronto.

What types of investigations didyou work on when you returnedto the commercial crimes section?I worked on investigations such asthe Alan Eagleson case (a onetimelawyer, politician and hockey agentwho was charged with eight countsof fraud and theft in Canada, andcharged with 34 counts of racketeer-ing, obstruction of justice, embezzle-ment and fraud in the United States).

I was eventually promoted andtransferred to the Toronto WestCommercial Crime Section where Ibecame an inspector, and worked on

a number of commercial fraud cases.I was assigned to the Walkerton Inquiry, and was later in charge ofthe Integrated Market EnforcementTeam for the Greater Toronto Areathat investigates major capital mar-ket fraud before I retired.

What did you get out of this part ofyour career path?It was always a challenge because I al-ways found myself working in brandnew units that were just starting fromscratch, where we had to find our ownprocedures and protocols.

What I really enjoyed was thatthere was something completely newhappening every day, mainly becauseof the new technologies that werebecoming part of the landscape.

Why did you retire from the RCMP?Was there a particular reason?There were many reasons. I was eli-gible for my pension, and while I really liked working for the RCMP, I wanted to try some different thingsand started my own investigationscompany.

What does Hannaford Partners do?My firm is hired by lawyers and cor-porations that need to conduct inter-nal investigations that involve fraudand embezzlement. We also do someconsulting work, and we train em-ployees to be more aware of fraud.

How do these investigations differfrom the ones you conducted withthe RCMP?A mid-size fraud investigation that’snot terribly complicated can takeabout a year from where the reportcomes in to where charges are laid.Those that are more complex cantake two to three years.

The investigations I do now are alot quicker. You don’t need searchwarrants, because the companiesthat hire you are eager to give you allthe information you need. We cantypically wrap up an investigation ina matter of months.

While the RCMP has a lot ofpower, it’s sometimes difficult to ex-

He graduated from the Universityof Western Ontario in 1980, wherehe earned a Bachelors of Arts de-gree in computer science.

He joined the Royal CanadianMounted Police (RCMP) shortlyafter graduation. He spent the nextten years as a constable in Win-nipeg working for a number of po-lice detachments, as well as thecommercial crimes section, wherehe conducted complex investiga-tions into investment frauds.

In 1990, he was promoted to cor-poral and was transferred to Ottawawhere he was assigned to com-puter crimes and helped establishthe RCMP’S computer crime foren-sic lab. He earned his CGA desig-nation during this time.

A few years later, Hannaford tookan 18-month leave of absence todevelop his forensic accountingskills with a boutique forensic ac-counting firm in Toronto. He re-turned to the Mounties and theircommercial crimes section afterthat, where he investigated majorfrauds. He was promoted to inspec-tor and headed up the nascent In-tegrated Market Enforcement Teamfor the Greater Toronto Area, whichis responsible for the investigationof major capital market fraud.

He retired from the RCMP in 2007and formed Hannaford Partners, aprivate investigations agency that in-vestigates securities market crimes,bankruptcy offences, commercialfrauds, and computer crime.

ecute their powers because war-rants need to be issued. Whenyou are working on a private in-vestigation, you have less toworry about provided you alwaysact legally and ethically whilebuilding your case.

Once you discover there is infact a problem, does your workend there? Do you do anythingto help business owners oryour clients take things to thenext level?It always depends on what theclient wants. Often times, theywant to try and recover their as-sets, so that’s when the lawyersare brought in.

Where is the easiest place tofind irregularities?I think you have to look at the dis-cretionary areas: those areas in theaccounting records that leave a lotup to the discretion of manage-ment. These include things suchas allowances for reserves, write-offs, bad accounts, and inventory.Sometimes reserves might be ma-nipulated to make a companyseem profitable when it isn’t.

What kind of person commitsfraud? There are different types of peo-ple. Some people are just greedyand want to get rich quick, whilesome are needy and maybe evendesperate. They have a sick childand they need to get somemoney. Some people might justsee an opportunity, and figurethey won’t get caught.

Where do you think fraud isheaded? We’ve all heard ofBernie Madoff and Ponzischemes, or multi-level pyramidmarketing schemes, but doestechnology create other crimes?I think fraud is always going tocontinue, and I think it will in-crease. The reason is that at thepace technology and communica-tions are developing, electronic

money transfers are becomingeasier and easier.

What’s the best way to preventthis kind of fraud?Education is the best way, and thevery simple rule I tell people is tonever send money to people youdon’t know. If you haven’t metthem, you don’t know them,haven’t sat in their office, don’tsend them money. And whateveryou do, never send money tosomeone you don’t know using awire transfer service like WesternUnion. Legitimate businessesdon’t work that way.

Is forensic accounting a growthsector within accounting?I think forensic accounting andfraud examination are bothgrowth sectors. But these areasflow with the economy. I feel weare going to see a lot of fraudover the next year or so becauseof the current economy.

This creates a need for moreregulations and more auditors.Internal audit departments willexpand, and there will be morework for people like me who dothis kind of stuff on a contrac-tual basis.

It’s definitely an interestingarea, and you can work in thisfield without having a policebackground.

What does it take to become aforensic accountant?My accounting training is ab-solutely indispensable, and as afraud investigator, you ab-solutely have to know how finan-cial statements work, where tolook, and where people can fixthe books.

I would also tell people whoare interested in that area to workfor internal auditors, maybe dosome bank auditing, and followup this with an additional profes-sional designation on top of theiraccounting designation, such as acertified fraud examiner.

Forensic accounting combines accountingprinciples with investigative techniques. Ituncovers and proves fraud and theft, deter-mines the damages that are owed in a breachof contract, and studies the income and as-sets of a married couple facing divorce toproperly calculate support payments.

This accounting specialty has become a hotjob over the last decade, and has beenthrust into the limelight following the Enronand Worldcom scandals. However, its originscan be traced back to Canada where an ac-countant was first asked to provide experttestimony at a bankruptcy hearing in 1817.Just over a hundred years later, the U.S. Internal Revenue Service (IRS) and FBIturned to accountants to sift through thou-sands of financial documents to help build atax-evasion case against mobster Al Capone.

Forensic accounting continued to take rootin Canada in 1975 when the accounting firmof Kroll Lindquist Avey (now Navigant Con-sulting) first offered their services as finan-cial investigators.

One of the firm’s partners, Bob Lindquist,who rose to fame for investigating Swissbanks for holding funds from Holocaust vic-tims, coined the term. The firm also investi-gated Brian Molony, an assistant bankmanager and compulsive gambler who stole$10.2-million from a bank to fund his gam-bling habit; the story was turned into a moviecalled “Owning Mahowny”.

Forensic accountants are typically called into investigate financial records after moneyhas gone missing. But many are also calledupon to help design fraud prevention con-trols, and conduct due diligence to uncoverpossible improprieties before they happen.Today, forensic accountants also participatein litigation consulting, business valuationand corporate restructuring.

What kind of mindset does it take todetect fraud, or work in this field?You should not take things forgranted. You can accept someone’s ex-planation, but you have to verify it,and look at all the documentation.You have to have a bit of a suspiciousmind and have an inquisitive mind.That’s what an investigator is.

What courses should students taketo help better prepare themselvesfor a career in forensic accounting?Start off with some basic accountingcourses, and also study businessanalysis. You will also want to learnhow businesses work and how theyare organized. You should also haveexcellent communication skills be-cause you have to talk and listen topeople, so really hone those inter-viewing skills.

Communication skills are a verybig part of this job. You have to havegood communication skills if you’regoing to question the credibility of acompany’s president, or go in front of

the board of directors and tell themwhat you think has gone wrong.

Does your firm hire new people?For my forensic accounting work, Isometimes do, and I also have peopleon contract. I don’t want to grow likea big firm, because that creates allsorts of other administrative issues,but if I need additional people, Ibuild a team to work on a specificproject and we go our separate waysonce it’s done.

You’re also behind Fraud Squad TV.Tell me a little about that venture.I’m a partner in “Fraud Squad TV”with Daniel D’Or, a television andmovie producer. The show aims toeducate the average person about thetypes of fraud that are out there, sothey don’t fall victim to it.

The old Nigerian email scam al-ways takes some people in, and thereare also a bunch of advance-fee loanfrauds where people who are desperatefor a loan pay three to four hundred

dollars up front thinking this will getthem a loan, but it usually doesn’t.

The show airs on Viva, Court TVCanada, and on the CBC’s documen-tary channel. It has also started to airin the United States.

The show’s website (fraudcast.ca)also lets you choose the city closest towhere you live and gives you a one-to-two minute news report on the fraudrisks in your local community. Theseare updated every week.

What is the best advice you can giveto students reading this interview?I think I chose a somewhat unconven-tional career path, but it was alwayswhat I wanted to do, and I have en-joyed virtually every moment of it.

You have to follow your heart andfollow your dreams. I know a lot ofpeople who follow their head, andthey’re unhappy about the decisionsthey’ve made. They believe they want acareer where they can make a lot ofmoney, but you have to be happy in life,too. Money isn’t everything. CIA

YOU CAN GOYOUR OWN WAY

MY JOURNEYI went to Queen’s University in Kingston after visiting anddiscovering its tight-knit community. The academic expe-rience was extremely rewarding — not only did I meet fan-tastic people who have since become close friends, but Ialso had the opportunity to take part in a six-month ex-change to Belgium in my third year studying commerce.

It was during this time that I decided to pursue account-ing. I loved working with numbers, but found myself de-bating between a career in finance or accounting. Aftertalking to a number of people who told me about the manyopportunities available within the accounting profession, Idecided on this route. Upon returning from my exchange,I completed my fourth year and earned my Bachelor’s ofCommerce degree with honors in 2003.

I joined PricewaterhouseCoopers as a summer student,and again after graduation, because of the people whoworked there.

People are an accounting firm’s best assets, and I felt aninstant connection to them, as well as the company’s inclu-sive corporate culture. I also appreciated the firm’s flexibil-ity in allowing me the opportunity to work with clients ina variety of sectors and industries.

In August 2007, as a senior associate with the firm, I wasgiven the opportunity to work for our New York offices for10 months, and gained valuable experience in their alterna-tive investment practice. I enjoyed my time working forthis group so much that I decided to specialize in financialservices full time upon returning to Toronto.

In 2008, around the time I was promoted to manager, Itook advantage of a secondment opportunity as campus re-cruitment manager. I relate to students because I wentthrough a similar decision process myself and I love sharingmy experiences with them. I know first hand that picking theright place to launch your career is a very tough decision, es-pecially when you are given a number of opportunities.

MY JOURNEYI studied at McGill University where I completed my un-dergraduate degree in business in 1991.

My first jobs out of school were at Kraft Foods and AvonCanada in Montreal, where I worked as a financial analyst.It was during this time that I learned about the CMA des-ignation. A number of my colleagues were pursuing it, andI thought I could benefit from having this designation, too.I earned my CMA designation in 1997. It has opened upmany doors for me, and brought me opportunities I would-n’t have had without it.

Right after earning the designation, I moved to Toronto. Iworked in the Royal Bank’s costing and profitability area, wasrecruited by Scotia Capital to head up a costing area, and thenworked as a senior project manager for the Bank of Montreal.

In 2002, I had my first child and decided to leave thecorporate world to have a bit more flexibility in my workschedule. I began doing some freelance consulting and cor-porate training, and slowly built up a business that becameKnowledge Plus.

WHERE I AM TODAYMy company specializes in financial training and consult-ing. Today, my business has grown and I now have otherpeople working for me to handle the volume.

We demystify financial concepts for professionals whoaren’t accountants, and train specialists on complex, techni-cal subject matters.

The consulting side of the business works on various proj-ects that are financial or strategic in nature. One such projectwas set in the banking world, where we looked at the prof-

itability of their various products and how they are marketed.Another project we have just started is studying small andmid-sized businesses in Canada and throughout the world,and exploring their ability to have access to financing, whetherit’s from banks, private equity, or other types of investors.

WHERE I AM TODAYMy days are spent mainly on campus recruiting initiativesacross the Greater Toronto Area, although I also spendtime on client work within our financial services group.

The client side keeps me occupied from January toMarch. I decided to keep only one client given my recruit-ing responsibilities, but they are one of our biggest clientson the investment management front.

During the main recruiting season I spend most of mydays meeting and speaking with students at the manyschools we recruit from.

We get up to 4,000 applications each year for the hun-dreds of positions we will fill. That makes it very importantto be on campus in the fall. While you can tell some thingsabout a student based on their grades, we’re also lookingfor candidates who are well rounded, are involved in extra-curricular activities, and have demonstrated a capacity forleadership (such as coaching a soccer team, being a part ofa school committee, or working with a charity).

We are also looking for people who really want to work

at our firm. We often ask students what they like about ourfirm during an interview and you can quickly tell if they’vedone their research, or if they just want a job.

We look for people who have a passion for our firm andwhat we do because those are the people who will join usone day and show their enthusiasm to future recruits.

WHAT’S NEXTThe opportunities within our firm are really endless. Whilemany employees stay in audit, a fair number will also trans-fer to different service lines such as tax and advisory.

As for me, I imagine I will be back in audit full time bythe middle of next year when my secondment as campusrecruitment manager comes to an end, although I neverlike to plan too far in advance given the numerous oppor-tunities that present themselves here.

Running your own business offers you a lot of flexibility.I can go to the gym in the afternoon when it’s less busy, butI will also work on a Saturday to get something done. Ihave more control over my schedule than when I wasworking in industry.

It also affords me the time to give back to the people andorganizations that have helped me throughout my career. Ilend my expertise to the Society of Management Account-ing, and moderate their Strategic Leadership Program.

It’s a lot of fun. Aside from discussing the more techni-cal facets of accounting, and going over such things asteamwork and the soft skills that will help future account-ants in the real world, I also talk about the many career op-portunities that are open to CMAs. I help future CMAsformulate their career paths, and act as a mentor that theycan bounce ideas off of.

I have also taught at the University of Toronto, RyersonUniversity and Concordia University. Teaching in yourspare time, and giving back, is not just rewarding but is agreat way to stay up to date and keep your skills sharp.

If you plan on becoming an entrepreneur you not onlyhave to have drive and ambition, but you also have to beself-motivated and capable of working on your own. Youhave to be able to wear many hats. In my case, although Inow have experts helping me out, I have become a sales-person, run marketing, manage IT, and run the company’sday-to-day administration.

WHAT’S NEXTI might go back into the corporate world but not right now.A few years ago, I was offered a very senior position withone of the major banks, but I turned it down. I prefer whatI have now.

Despite the economic downturn we are busier than ever.My goal is to see Knowledge Plus expand, continue tobuild our consulting and corporate training business, andadd the right mix of people to better service our clients.

If you can make it through some of the initial hurdlesand are willing to take some risks, being your own boss canbe very rewarding.

MY JOURNEYI studied at the University of Western Ontario’s RichardIvey School of Business, obtaining my Honors in BusinessAdministration in 1998. Their program brought businessconcepts and theories to life by using real-life case studies.You learned quickly that business problems are often multi-faceted, and are affected by market issues, financial con-straints, and accounting and tax considerations.

I decided to pursue my career in accounting in my final yearwhen I learned that accounting firms provide exposure to alarge number of companies and industries early in your career,giving you opportunities to see best practices in how busi-nesses are run and allowing you to build a personal network.

I joined KPMG upon graduation because of their strongpresence in the technology sector and the people I metthrough the interview process — it came down to whatclients and people felt like the right fit for me.

I was promoted to manager in 2002, senior manager twoyears later, and became an audit partner with the firm lastyear. My experience was varied throughout those years,working on not-for-profits like the Toronto InternationalFilm Festival, initial public offerings and business acquisi-tions, audits of large telecom and software companies, andtraveling to Asia and Europe to facilitate training courses.

WHERE I AM TODAYYour chances of becoming partner evolve over time, based inlarge part on you taking the initiative to get involved, doing goodwork when opportunities arise, and having supportive mentors.

The work a senior manager and partner do are some-times similar, but there is a greater leadership aspect tobeing a partner.

Clients like industry expertise, so being specialized overtime and being a known leader in a certain area helps posi-tion your case for partnership as you become more seniorin the firm. You have to build your status as a go-to person

MY JOURNEYI graduated from McGill University in 2002 where I ma-jored in accounting. While in school, I worked at Scotia-bank as a teller where I gained valuable work experience incustomer service, and personal and corporate banking.

I first joined Deloitte as a summer student in my sec-ond year of university. I worked as an auditor within thefirm’s manufacturing/consumer business practice in Mis-sissauga for four months, and they offered me a full-timejob upon graduation.

I accepted and started my career as a staff accountant. Iwas promoted to senior staff accountant two years later, andbecame an audit manager two years after that. I was recentlypromoted to senior manager and now work with the firm’snational audit assurance and advisory group specializing inInternational Financial Reporting Standards (IFRS).

WHERE I AM TODAYOur national office team provides direct support to clientsand client engagement teams on IFRS matters. This canrange from assisting with IFRS implementations, to help-ing resolve technical issues, to designing and developingmaterials and publications about IFRS. We train and teachpeople about these standards, and what steps need to betaken to implement and comply with them.

IFRS are the current accounting rules for over 100countries and will replace GAAP for Canadian public com-panies in 2011 and onwards. Some 4,500 Canadian publiccompanies are expected to start using these standards thatwill improve and standardize accounting practices world-wide. They also help facilitate international transactions

and commerce, as anyone reading a financial report pre-pared anywhere in the world knows they’re comparableand based on common ground.

I have several clients in various sectors that have alreadystarted this important transition. I offer them training,

for emerging and complex issues within an industry, anddevelop your personal brand.

A candidate for partner is expected to be out in the mar-ket attracting new business, networking and making newcontacts, being more involved in proposals, and workingwith board members and senior executives.

You also need to show team leadership skills. As youbuild a case for partnership, you need to show you can notonly bring in new business, but can also manage projectsand lead teams. Partners need to empower their teams tocomplete projects without being directly involved in theactual day-to-day work, but must also be able to providehands-on support when needed.

Nowadays, showing versatility and involvement in thecommunity is also important. I have been involved with theCA qualification process for a number of years, and havingtaken on a leadership role on the UFE Board of Evaluatorswas another differentiator for me when I was consideredfor partnership.

I really enjoy the work I am doing. I like seeing our

younger team members grow professionally. I find helpingdevelop the careers of the next generation of accountantsvery fulfilling — whether their path is within or outside ofour firm.

WHAT’S NEXTI plan to spend the next year getting out in the technologyindustry and building relationships with both startup andlarge technology companies. The technology industry isvery innovative and active in raising money and doingmerger and acquisition deals. We want to be the knownand trusted advisor they turn to.

On a personal level, I have two young children, so beingthe best dad you can be, and maintaining a work-life bal-ance, is also important.

While there are days where I have to be accessible 24/7,there are times where my focus is on my family and theBlackBerry is put away. I want to make sure I can spendquality time with them while still meeting my responsibil-ities as a partner.

advice on policy decisions, and make the IFRS transitionprocess easier to deal with.

Our team also produces a monthly newsletter called“Countdown” that is focused on the transition to IFRS inCanada. It helps our clients better understand the differentchallenges and issues that are a part of IFRS implementa-tion, and keeps them up to speed with what is going onelsewhere in the world. If there are any new changes thathave come out, or anything else that may be important forthem to know, this is one of the first places they will hearabout it.

IFRS has made my job very exciting as it is constantlyevolving, and has put me in the centre of a lot of change. Italso provided me with a fantastic opportunity a few yearsago when I did a four-month secondment in Australia,where I learned how companies there worked within anIFRS environment.

I not only gained a lot of technical expertise, but alsolearned how to create a better work-life balance. Aus-tralians work very hard, but they also like to enjoy life.

It’s very easy, especially when you enjoy your job, to allowwork to become the focus of your life. The time I spent inAustralia was a reminder that a fulfilling career is incrediblyimportant, but taking the time to relax is also necessary in

achieving success. I made the most of my time in Australiaand spent every weekend traveling to new places.

WHAT’S NEXTRight now, my focus is on IFRS. The implementation date isfast approaching, things are changing daily, and the demandfor timely and helpful implementation support is critical.

I have been fortunate in that Deloitte has presented mewith opportunities that have moved my career in directionsthat I would never have contemplated several years ago. Ihope to continue to take my career in that same upwardand progressive direction. I’d like to see myself move to-wards a leadership role in the next three or so years.

I would also like to continue to travel, either as a part ofmy career, or outside of the workplace.

With Deloitte operating all over the world, there aremany international opportunities available, including shortand long-term secondments around the world, an interna-tional development program that helps out third-worldcountries, and various committees and teams. I have andwill continue to try and get involved in as many of these aspossible in the near future.

Travel is one of my passions, and there are so manyplaces in the world left to visit.

MY JOURNEYI graduated from the University of Toronto in 2001. I at-tended the Scarborough campus for its co-op program. Iwas very involved on campus as a teaching assistant.

My first accounting job was a co-op work term with amid-sized firm. I then worked another co-op term with alarger firm that I joined upon graduation. I joined Ernst &Young four years later in 2005.

I was attracted to the firm because they had just createdtheir tax university, EYU. I have always been interested intax — I’ve been doing my own taxes since I was 15, andeven volunteered at CRA tax clinics — so this sounded likean ideal opportunity for me.

I graduated from the firm’s tax university two years ago.This program gives young accountants the experience theyneed to become tax professionals by developing their tech-nical skills and giving them the chance to work in a numberof specialty areas within tax.

Most accountants who work in tax start in compliance,where you complete a lot of tax returns. But once you havemore experience, you can move into different tax areas suchas international tax or transaction tax (which deals with ac-quisitions, refinancing, and initial public offerings).

WHERE I AM TODAYI work in international tax today. This side of the firm’s taxpractice is all about helping companies that have an inter-national business interest become more competitive.

MY JOURNEYI grew up in southern England and studied at the Univer-sity of Durham. I attended an information session about ca-reers in accounting and it really opened my eyes.

A career in accounting intrigued me, so I applied for aninternship with PricewaterhouseCoopers, and workedthere during the summer of my second year at university. Ireally enjoyed the experience, and that’s when I decided thiswould be the right career path for me.

When I immigrated to Canada I discovered the Univer-sity of Toronto’s Master of Management and ProfessionalAccounting program (MMPA). It was the perfect solutionfor me because it condensed all the courses I would need topursue a career in accounting in Canada into a two-yearprogram.

The MMPA program taught me a holistic approach toaccounting that helped me see how things in the businessworld are tied together, such as how a company’s operationsand management strategy is linked to accounting.

It also provided me with the right case studies and train-ing I needed to master the Uniform Evaluation and win thegold medal for achieving the best grade in Ontario. Ilearned that you have to treat studying like a full-time jobwhen preparing for the UFE, and that you have to studyconsistently. You cannot cram and do too much at one timeor you will burn out.

As I had already worked for PricewaterhouseCoopers inEngland, the MMPA program put me in touch with their

While a lot of tax accountants are very specialized, I pre-fer having a broader background and try to be well versedin everything. This is especially important when it comesto international tax because while the principles are thesame, the rules and the way things work are very differentin each country.

The firm has also given me some valuable opportunitiesto better myself in other ways. I do a lot of volunteer workhere, and have had the chance to do some mentoring, too.

I was also given the chance to travel to Chile for threemonths late last year as part of the firm’s Corporate FellowsResponsibility program, through which we provide ourservices free of charge to South American entrepreneurs.

The firm assigned me to develop an international taxstrategy for Business News Americas, a media company inLatin America. It was a valuable experience on both a pro-fessional and cultural level.

Professionally, I learned a lot more about internationaltax. When you are working in a foreign country and dis-cussing business with the entrepreneurs there, you see

things from a new perspective. I also came back with agreater appreciation for Chile’s culture.

WHAT’S NEXTI plan to learn more about international tax. I want a bet-ter understanding of foreign companies and the opportuni-ties that are available to them. It can be very challengingbecause each country has its own set of tax rules.

Besides work, I would like to do more volunteering. Volunteering offers me the opportunity to give back to

my community, as well as to those who are less fortunate. Iteach and mentor right now, and I am involved in an edu-cation program that helps underprivileged high school stu-dents get into college.

I usually volunteer for organizations where I can applythe skills I have learned — such as helping out at volunteertax clinics — but I am also interested in doing more hands-on volunteer work.

One day, I would like to go to Africa and build houses forHabitat for Humanity. This organization believes everyoneis entitled to a safe and affordable place to live and relies onits volunteers to help build homes in different countries. Ithink it is important to dedicate oneself to causes like this.

head office in Toronto and I interviewed for a co-op spot.That led to another co-op opportunity and a full-time jobwhen I graduated in 2005.

WHERE I AM TODAYI am a manager with the firm. I work in the professional,technical, risk and quality group, where we answer complexaccounting questions and help our clients properly inter-pret Canadian GAAP, U.S. GAAP, and IFRS, so they canapply them to their business and achieve success.

We’re a pretty small department within a global firmand every day brings new challenges. I feel lucky to havethe opportunity to shape accounting standards and influ-ence how they are used.

Working in accounting not only lets you have the mobil-ity to work anywhere in the world, but offers you the flex-ibility to have a family, too.

I took a one-year leave of absence when I had my daugh-ter last year. I chose not to have a child before I was pro-moted to manager because I wanted more control over myday-to-day schedule. The firm has been very supportive ofmy decision to start a family. The flexibility this positionoffers gives me the freedom to plan out my day and myworking hours.

It can be hard to balance your work and home life, andsometimes you feel there aren’t enough hours in the day to

do everything, but you have to try and separate the two. Idon’t think about work when I am spending time with mydaughter, but I admit to taking care of some work-relatedmatters in the evening after she is in bed.

You also have to schedule the things that require themost brainpower when you are most effective. For me,that’s usually first thing in the morning. I also make a listof what I have to do during the day, and allocate howmuch time each task will take. This helps keep me focusedand on track.

WHAT’S NEXTI have always taken the approach that as long as I enjoywhat I am doing I will continue doing it. I see every aspectof life as a chance to learn something new, both in my workand personal life, and I look forward to seeing where thatwill take me.

I also want to show my daughter the many wonderfulplaces in the world. Traveling is a passion of mine. I havetraveled to each province in Canada and would like to showher this country’s diversity and beauty. I would also like totake her to Europe and give her a chance to experience itshistory and appreciate its different cultures. She’s alreadybeen to England a couple of times.

I enjoy being a mom and love my career. I want toachieve the perfect balance of the two.
